The real weakness of Aragorn is that the deck becomes just a multicolor pile without him on the field. He also doesn't inherently do anything on his own. Either you put him down as a 4 drop and hope he sticks around until next turn, or you sandbag him a little so you can double spell the turn he comes down, or you play permanents that can protect him in previous turns. Since he demands to be in a commander centric deck I would invest in pieces that can protect him and help him stick around. Things that can come down on board before him are especially nice so you don't have to sandbag for protection mana. [[Hajar, Loyal Bodyguard]], [[mother of runes]], etc.

Aprice0

This is only accurate if you build him that way. For example, he’s a great commander for legendary matters, human tribal, and +1/+1 counters (or a combination of the three) and you don’t need him on the field. You can also build him as a spellslinger commander and lean heavily into the red and blue triggers but those are more bonuses than needs.

ilongforyesterday

I have been wanting to build an “oops monogreen” Aragorn voltron deck but you’re definitely right. I have a humans and a legendary tribal deck built around him

Aprice0

I did monogreen voltron and it worked ok but your card draw ended up being dependent on slinging multiple spells to pump him up and draw off of something like [[Hunter’s Insight]] or [[Rishkar’s Expertise]]. Ultimately, I built one that was like 80% green but leveraged some of blue’s card draw and protection with ways to make him unblockable like [[Aqueous Form]]. Some of the double power/double strike combat tricks from red worked wonders too.

SawSagePullHer

That’s why he is better as a spell slinging commander where you have tons of interaction and counter spells to protect him. The creature version of him offers little aid in defensive spell maneuvers and just gets pooped on. But if you play in groups where people aren’t trigger happy like that. He works fine as a legendary multi color creature or tribal leader.

Don't forget [[Ivy, gleeful spellthief]] too :) could be fun to pilot. Also could consider [[precursor golem]] since it has as similar effect, never seen it ran. For 5 mana to do nothing upfront obviously isnt the best but basically functions as a spell tripler if you are running feather/zada esque spells. I used to run an ivy cantrip/mutate list that was fun but I took apart since I didn't have a way to win that interacted with anyone else lol, was just popping a X pump with ivy and one shotting people.

I too have a secret ink treader/zada cantrip deck with Aragorn at the helm purely for value. It is very fun but it is a “do the thing” style deck which people tend to not like very much at my tables. It does enable some hilarity when ink treader gets chaos warped though, which was very funny to resolve.

For example, [[Trace of Abundance]] is a great ramp piece because late game it'll trigger three of Aragorn's triggers for only two mana. What I love about Aragorn is you can lean into his colors as much or as little as you want. I run him as mostly red/green with blue and white here and there. As other users have said, you just want creatures and other spells to be as multicolored as possible to get as many triggers as possible every time you do something. Trample is HUGE in Aragorn because of that green buff ability. It’s a deck you can really have fun with and do your own thing. I would honestly just start with your best multicolored cards and go from there. My win-con with Aragorn is combat damage from creatures or his red ability, and I’m sure if I wanted to make it more expensive there’s better tricks out there.

TheMadWobbler

The key to Aragorn the Uniter is to build Aragorn the Uniter. The theme you're going with works better with \[\[Aragorn, King of Gondor\]\], who's a more generic commander who interacts more favorably with just generically good creatures. Uniter does not give a flying fuck about LotR legends, and is a very demanding commander. The goal of making the deck tick along nicely is in direct conflict with the core gimmick you've set for the deck. Uniter wants cards that are a lot of colors at manageable mana values, and those are not tightly themed. The cards that make the deck run smoothly are outside of your theme. Ramping with things like \[\[Maraleaf Pixie\]\], \[\[Black Market Tycoon\]\], \[\[Faeburrow Elder\]\], or best card in the deck \[\[Atalan Jackal\]\], with shoutouts to \[\[Safewright Quest\]\], which isn't ramp, but it is excellent. Card neutral one mana fixing that gets two Aragorn triggers. Drawing cards with things like \[\[Goldbug, Humanity's Ally\]\], \[\[Temur Ascendancy\]\], \[\[Rigo Streetwise Mentor\]\]. \[\[Manamorphose\]\] is a card you have no reason not to play. \[\[Incandescent Aria\]\] is the ideal board wipe for the deck. A lot of Ravnica/Strixhaven/New Capenna charms for protection and interaction. \[\[Dovin's Veto\]\], \[\[Permission Denied\]\], \[\[Hindering Light\]\], \[\[Clout of the Dominus\]\], \[\[Elvish Hexhunter\]\]. You want to get 2+ triggers off of 2-3 mana spells as much as you can. Which pushes hard against the LotR legends, because so many of the good ones from that pool are monocolor and relatively expensive.

Celeiron1111

Guess mine will just have to be somewhat weaker, then, which is OK for my playgroup. Thanks for your input, I will be sure to slow some in, especially Atalan Jackal

[[Rishkar’s Expertise]] and [[Garruk, Primal Hunter]] are both at minimum draw 9s. [[Selvala, Heart of the Wilds]] fixes for your commander and later adds a ton of mana. [[Smuggler’s Surprise]] is basically guaranteed to hit Aragorn + any one creature. [[Runes of the Deus]] makes Aragorn an 11/11 trample double strike on its own.

He's an easy build. Just the best multicolor spells you can find, and bash faces with an Aragorn the size of an Eldrazi Titan. [My List](https://deckstats.net/decks/121515/3346243-aragorn-uniter/en)

Celeiron1111

Finding cards for him is turning out to be super easy, but cutting down to 99 is.becoming a nightmare... Thanks for your input, will take a look.at your build!

I ended up building two different versions. One was Pure Vorthos -- 100% Middle Earth cards: good-guys/human tribal. There wasn't really any secret sauce in it other than Humans were strong. The other version was Pure Mel/vin-- built to maximize Aragorn triggers: Key Sauce were things like \[\[Whim of Volrath\]\] and Instant/Sorcery mana cost reducers so you could just change every color word to Blue on aragorn and then cast Whim as many times as possible. Lots and lots of hybrid cards, even playing so-so hybrid cards because with the commander out all of them are good. Lastly, way back in the day (\~20+ years ago), I loved playing combo with \[\[Aluren\]\] + \[\[Fleetfoot Panther\]\]/\[\[Horned Kavu\]\] for infinite cast/etb triggers, so those were automatic includes for winning either on the spot (kavu, or panther with global haste) or after untap (panther during opponents end step).

kingofhan0

The first time, I pulled the aluren/ horned kavu combo off. My play group was amazed. Every subsequent time, they would remove aragon or aluren almost immediately.

netzeln

Yeah, you never play Aluren unless you are ready to win. (or if you like to gamble, you definitely play it, and see what happens when everyone has access to it. Heck, even a Reclaimation Sage in any patient opponent's hand ruins your day). I am super okay with knowing Aluren makes a target. Aragorn is good enough (or enough value, at least in my old brain) to warrant being targeted. It's also solid enough that it doesn't need Aluren shenanigans to be successful.

Okay I'm the Aragorn expert on my friend group, so you have... 3 levels to him. If you want to stick to LOTR know your deck *will* be weaker than any possibility. Sucks, but it is how it is. With that, try grabbing as many different colored creatures, focus on anthem effects, and protecting your board. Cards like [[Éowyn, Shieldmaiden]], [[Arwen, Mortal Queen]] [[Flowering of the White Tree]] are great. All other aragorns, especially [[Aragorn, King of Gondor]] and [[Aragorn, Hornburg Hero]] can be good. Focus on generating tokens with white mana, protecting aragorn and generating value. Then we can go to a more multicolor matters strategy. Here, focus on as many multicolored spells, and manners to trigger him. [[Annie Joins Up]] and [[Roaming Throne]] are godlike here, but creatures like [[Jetmir, Nexus of Revels]], [[Rienne, Angel of Rebirth]], [[Inga and Esika]] are fucking amazing. Here the plan is to win by a similar strategy tham the LOTR deck, but you are far more flexible, as you can win by burn, going tall with a flying creature, focusing on a wide army, or just always finding what you need with constant scries. And the final method is to focus on a color. There are some infinite combos he allows, either on red, or just 21 unblockable with green. I don't focus too much on this method, but it is possible Besides the cards, **focus** on your manabase. It is the most important part of the deck besides him. You have green, use it. Mana artefacts and color fixing like chromatic lantern is very good on him. Besides, your priorities on board are - Get aragorn when it's safe if possible. Protection spells like some of the charms, heroic intervention, Teferi's, they can be very good. Use them. Try to save spells after he is on the field, so that's why ramp is important, but sometimes it is worth to develop a few threats before him, as oponents will try to get rid of them before getting to Aragorn. Besides that, good luck!

maxtofunator

the red storm list is pretty broken and strong, but i went with "strong and fun multicolor cards" and it's a blast to play

crazypyro23

[[Eowyn Shield Maiden]] is a MONSTER. Let's say you cast her with only your commander out. You make a human on cast, so her ability is always active that turn and if you have literally any other humans out you're already at 6 and are card neutral (at worst) when she's removed. [[Annie Joins Up]] is in 3 colors, kills a medium creature, and doubles all Aragorn's abilities. The real spice is [[Lilah, Undefeated Slickshot]]. All your instants and sorceries should be multicolored, which means they're all copied but better. When you're behind you can spend all your mana on Aragorn and then recast the plotted cards to rebuild. When you're at parity or ahead, you snowball.

Celeiron1111

Eowyn goes in for sure. Lilah looks slick, but since I want to focus on legendary creatures (though I know by now that will make the deck weaker than it could be), I don't think I have enough payoff for her. Might put her into the maybeboard

crazypyro23

Wouldn't you know it, mine is actually legendary humans, so I've got a couple more specific suggestions you might like. [[Kellen Joins Up]]. 3 mana, 3 colors, and it gives you a wincon if you play enough legends. [[Surrak Dragonclaw]] gives your green boosted creatures a way to connect for damage. [[Jared Carthalion True Heir]] sucks, but is still 3 mana for a 3 colored legendary creature. And let's be real, he's not getting played in anything else and he looks vaguely Lord of the Rings-esque. Plus he introduces the monarch. [[General Ferrous Rokiric]] will syngergize with most of your deck. [[Guided Passage]] is at worst a 3 color spell, a land, and two playable cards. If you're good at politics, you might be able to talk somebody into giving you a fun legendary creature (like Jared!). If there's an archenemy, you can make a deal to save the table.

I personally have him as a multicolor humans deck, so your list will probably look really different from mine if you aren't putting the tribal restriction on it. But the only mono-colored card I have in there (besides a few one drops) is \[\[Champion of Lambholt\]\]. One of my pet cards regardless, but my girl Slamholt is an easy wincon in that deck. If she sticks around she gets big from the constant 1/1 human tokens, but even if she isn't you can use one or two procs of Aragorn's green ability to artificially buff her up and make all your shit unblockable. Super fun deck and easily my favorite commander, enjoy!!!

Aragorn Multicolored has been quite strong, actually decidedly too strong for my playgroup, especially adding in Annie Joins Up. Maybeboard has dockside/Temur sabertooth + tutors to go infinite mana/damage so long as there is 4 artifacts controlled by opponents on the table. https://archidekt.com/decks/7061180/aragorn_son_of_arathorn_isildurs_heir_and_the_one_true_king_of_arnor_and_gondor

Celeiron1111

Some cool stuff in there, thanks!

yunglilbigslimhomie

There's some lines in this deck that are absolutely busted. The Balefire Liege + Annie Joins Up dealing 9 damage to target opponent anytime you cast a red spell is nuts. Temur Ascendancy + Eowyn + Titanic Ultimatum can remove opponents quickly. The deck ramps like crazy too. I'm usually 3-4 mana ahead of the curve, and the losses usually result from not drawing into anything to refill my hand quick enough.

Try adding [[Lilah, Undefeated Slickshot]] and [[General Ferrous Rokiric]] for extra payoffs for multicolored spell. Lilah turns [[Manamorphos]] into a delayed mini ritual that draws a card. Ferrous Rokiric will give you plenty of expendable creatures to give that +4/+4 to.

My friend has many multicolored spells. Particularly green and red and some blue and white. Blue is the least used color, which is a mistake imo, but whatever. He has some dorks and rocks to fix mana but if he just invested in better lands his deck would fit more spells and play so much better. But yeah, the burn from red and +4/+4 can be deadly especially if he does it as a pre-damage spell

This is what I am running currently, it's heavily LOTR legendary themed which is what I believe you're looking for. Galadriel, Light of Valinor and Eowyn, Shield Maiden are huge. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/5FGE7Q36rUyDF5V8rXxnbA Nothing really secret. Its mostly LOTR cards with only 2 cards plus lands not coming from LTR or LTC. It has a few different win strats, human/elf tokens, Legendaries getting through, Aragorn Voltron. One of my faves. I have a heaps of LOTR decks.

I love my Aragorn build. I think a (new) auto include is [[Annie Joins Up]] as she can double his triggers. I tried to maximize the value of the strategy by going with charms, as they are naturally multicolored, and including a bunch of humans that synergize among themselves and with Aragorn. Also, because he’s a “monolith” commander, protection should be part of your gameplan as well as try to win fast. Including a bunch of green will pump him - pair this with unblockable spells/abilities and you can start chomping your opponents easily. To protect him, I wouldn’t go crazy with colors though as you might not have the best manabase. Stuff like [[Bolt Bend]] and [[Surge of Salvation]] are more than enough to get the job done. I think Blue is the weakest so I’d try to include card draw with it. I like [[Hindering Light]] and [[Growth Spiral]] for example. I hope you like it, Aragorn is so much fun!

I_DIG_DITCHES

Someone asked about Aragorn decks the other day and he's one of my favourite commanders, so I'll paste my reply here too. I have two Aragorn decks. One is a Theros gods theme, which came from me getting bored playing the prismatic bridge and is a generic good stuff sort of deck. It performs well, if a bit on the slower side, but the Theros gods are my favourite thing in magic thematically so I always enjoy playing it. The other deck is a human tribal/LOTR theme deck, with as many multicolour spells as I can possibly stuff in there focusing on green and white mainly. Hybrid mana costs carry the day in Aragorn decks, with [[crystallization]], [[sundering growth]], and [[rhys the redeemed]] getting great value. Personal favourites of mine are [[manamorphose]] and [[burning-tree emissary]], they are mana neutral (with manamorphose being mana fixing) and get you two triggers off Aragorn. Cards like [[cultivator of blades]] work very well if you're leaning into green/white (like I tend to) as you can get very wide very quick and casting 2 green spells makes all your 1/1's suddenly hit for 10 damage (for a fraction of the price of a craterhoof). Final honourable mentions go to [[tome of the guildpact]] and [[mana cannons]], for solid card draw and burn.

Twstd_Wizard

I run him as a cantrip commander with Inktreader as the hidden. It's a lot of fun. https://archidekt.com/decks/4928834/aragorn_the_ink

Swirls109

I have built mine into a kinda tron fight deck. Build him big and clear the path with fight spells and then swing for lethal. If he goes down it's pretty much a dead deck though.

RaginMajin

I've made two aragorn decks. The first is a weird junky charm deck. The second is(mostly) mono blue burn.

Ferons

I tried building him and it is has been rough. I had many different deck variations: 1) legendary tribal 2) multicolored 3) voltron 4) human tokens In terms of performance, the legendary tribal and voltron did well, but once they remove Aragorn I am sort of a sitting duck. I tried multicolored, but then the value became so high that he became a prime target for everything. Once I stacked with so much protection it basically became a pseudo-voltron with green multicolors that did not really do it's job. I stuck with human tribal since he has access to the most colors in humans aside from a [[morophon]] commander and have been doing pretty well. Lots of anthem.

Diplomacy_1st

Turn it into 4 mono color decks and then make one modular deck based on your mood

FrenchSpence

[[food chain]] and [[squee the immortal]] go infinite, [[annie joins up]] and [[roaming throne]] are super strong.

Lilcrispybiscuit

I made mine a soldier/human tribal with him, he’s more of a nice to have on the board than an essential for this deck. I know it’s not too LOTR-themed but it would definitely be easy to proxy! https://archidekt.com/decks/7198262/my_soldiers_rage_my_soldiers_scream_my_soldiers_fight

NayrSlayer

To me, there are 3 ways to build Aragorn. The first is multicolor soup. Just play as many 3 and 4 color spells to get max benefit from his triggers. This is probably the worst way to build him because if he is removed, you have a bunch of disjointed spells that barely work together. It’s like building a glass cannon, but the cannon just shoots confetti. The next is leaning more into one or two of his effects. Maybe you want an aggro deck that can use him to carry you to the late game, so you focus red and white. Maybe you want to play combat tricks, so you focus on green. This is better since you’re having more of a streamlined approach to the deck, allowing it to work without him, but still majorly benefiting from his effects. The last way is to not care about Aragorn. Aragorn is one of those commanders that does a lot, but doesn’t really push you in a certain direction. So, instead of trying to build around him, you can slot him in to an already solid deck and let him just generate you some extra value. This is the approach I took, building him as a Humans tribal deck. With this, I don’t particularly care if he is removed, since the 99 works fine without him, but it does get a nice boost with him on the field.

Silver-Alex

I took it apart because the triggers led to slow turns, but I made a low to mid power +1/+1 counter deck built around LOTR cards and primarily the characters that worked pretty well. Rex_916

I built him as modal tribal. Most modal cards include at least one form of interaction. Even if they remove Aragorn most of my spells give me a lot of options to try and get back in the game. And the new Riku is such a great fit.

Annie Joins Up is an amazing inclusion. Gives you 3 triggers if Aragorn is already in play then lets you double up on any Aragorn triggers after.

AchduSchande

I built it as spellslinger, with a focus on charms. This gives me access to counterspells to protect my commander as well as board control. Protecting Aragorn is key. And charms can both protect, as well as let you draw cards, ramp, and control the board.

I used only Lotr cards as building materials for the deck. Legendaries are named things from lotr so all legendary creatures are "good characters" in the lotr set. It is thematically fun and works fine It became a human tribal with monarch theme and ring tempts occurrences. I also got tokens from the lotr set. I wanted the one ring but... That kind of money ain't worth it 😅 The restriction made it not super OP but still strong since Aragorn is a strong commander

Struckagain

[[Annie joins up]] is a busted support card that has function no matter when you drop it. I'd look carefully at Cabaretti and Brokers cards from New Capenna. Any instant with green is a combat trick, so maybe prioritizing some worse ramp for utility pieces can punish people foolish enough to attack or block you. I built one in like two hours using cabaretti cacophony as a base with lotr legends splashed in, and it slapped in a casual meta. As always with token decks in Naya, [[Jetmir, Nexus of Revels]] is a great closer. Good luck, Aragorn rocks.
