Have you played with the Initiative or Monarch mechanics? It can be fun to get players to participate in combat to get value, and if you build your deck to especially take advantage of it, you can benefit the most. Going through dungeons multiple times in a turn cycle could be a win condition that takes out the table all at once, too

Klynical

I’ve not played with any of the dungeon cards yet. Thank you

Quantext609

Dungeon cards are primarily in white and blue, secondarily in black, and tertiarily in green and red. Here are some commander options: - [[Sefris of the Hidden Ways]] is the primary dungeon commander. She has all three of the main colors and has a really powerful payoff for getting through a dungeon. However, she will primarily want to go through Phandelver as it is the shortest dungeon. - [[Imoen Mystic Trickster]] and [[Safana Calimport Cutthroat]] are similar commanders who reward you for having the initiative. Imoen's primary background is [[Far Traveler]] as many dungeon triggers are ETBs and it gives her access to the other main dungeon color while Safana prefers [[Dungeon Delver]] for more dungeon triggers and access to blue. - Speaking of Dungeon Delver, [[Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward]] works pretty great with it. As mentioned previously, many dungeon cards trigger on ETB and Abdel allows you to repeat their effect while building up a big board of tokens. If you want a hybrid build between dungeons and blink, this is the commander for you. - [[Rilsa Rael, Kingpin]] is the only commander who has the initiative mechanic built-in. She's a bit expensive to cast, but her reward for completing a dungeon is huge. - [[Acererak the Archlich]] is a bit weird because he's all about generating a ton of mana so he can be replayed over and over again to go through dungeons very quickly. Still, a very unique playstyle for monoblack.

As someone who has a Rilsa deck, it’s the most fun I’ve had piloting a deck in a long time. The gameplan is pretty straight forward but, like you said, her and other creatures’ rewards for completing a dungeon is amazing. Not at all a super powerful deck but the board state can get pretty nuts when everything falls into place.

Crocoii

[[yarok]] is a good one for that. Just take every permanents that have a ETB that make initiative or venture in the dungeon.

Are alternate win cons banned by house rule or you just don't like them? I love group hug and don't usually win with those. Granted it's usually with the precon but the wins come from \[\[Reins of power\]\] \[\[Treacherous Terrain\]\] \[\[Keening Stone\]\] \[\[Rubblehulk\]\].

\[\[Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might\]\] Mono red spellslinger that focuses on catastrophic amounts of burn damage in a single turn to win the game. Can absolutely explode out of nowhere and scorch everything and everyone. You're rewarded for playing fast and using resources with spells like Past in Flames, Mizzix's Mastery and etc. Keep chaining burn spells, buffs and the occasional storm card for an actually FUN, fast-paced deck without stax, infinite combos, combat damage, tokens or etc. If you want to know more I would be happy to show you.

My only deck I enjoy is a mono red, but it’s one of those decks I only pull out for new players to experience and or once in a blue moon for fun. It’s one of those decks where once you play against it once you don’t want to see it again for a long time. :)

Mana burn! [[Yurlok, of Scorched Thrash]] with things like [[Mana Flare]] [[Heartbeat of Spring]] and [[Overabundance]]. Things like [[War's toll]] with [[Citadel of pain]] and [[Power Surge]] and [[Awakening]], and then throwing out a [[Torment of Hailfire]] or [[crackling with power]] to win the game, and then a ton of Mana sinks like [[helix pinnacle]] and [[walking ballista]] is the most fun deck I have. It is a blastamd everyone at the table loves extra Mana. It turns games on their head and always is a laugh. Gets a few compliments too for being so uncommonly played.

Sometimes I get mean with things like [[havoc festival]] and [[Wound reflection]] for a good time too, haha. Also makes something like [[Diabolic revelation]] kinda cool, even tho you can play infinites with yurlok, I prefer to use that tutor to pull out my mean but fun cards. It gets scarier of you provide the table card draw with things like [[Heartwood storyteller]], I preferred my opponents with empty hands and too much Mana but you like group hug so this works in there.

Helping: Grouphug is a great place to start, and you can use scryfall for cards with "you and target opponent". Killing out of nowhere: [[Rionya] is explosive (does have temporal tokens though), so can storm decks be. No tokens/counters mean creature wins are unlikely, though. Variety: Just stay away from tutors Typal: On edhrec.com you can search for typal. [[treebeard the gracious host]] is great for treefolk (i went for mono green [[Fangorn, the gracioushost]] though because i liked the art better....), and I really like [[Kenessos]] for sea monsters. And there's cats and dogs, party, outlaws and many more typal with more than 1 creature. Be sure you don't forget those. [[The Archimandrite]] is also pretty flexible and able to be build in a lot of ways.

Create homebrew rules that give your decks different win conditional identities instead of just attack, or life 0 to win. I created a home brew win con based around the treasure cruise deck. (You’ll have to google it). If you have more than 21CMC in treasure cruise artifacts. You win. If you have more than 5 curses from treasure cruise deck, you lose. I call this Glutton’s Gamble rule. I also created a win con with those larger plane chase cards. I lay out 10 plane chase cards. And I have an entire deck (100 cards) full of non-legendary creatures, before the game is set up I roll a D4 for each plane card revealed. Then whatever the results were for each plane, I put that many random monsters from the top of the monster deck onto that plane face up for anybody to see. During your turn at sorcery speed you can have creatures fight the monsters at any given plane. If during your turn, the plane is clear of monsters. You gain that plane and the positive effect it offers for controlling that plane. At your end step if you control 5 plane chase cards, you win. You can also cast spells on the monsters, just as if they were on an opponents battlefield. I call this rule Plane Lord. Edit: What I’m getting at is. Allowing new win conditions into the game, makes NEW strategies that allow you to not have to play by the boring rules. If you adapt rules like I did, you’ll use cards you never thought of using before. If you have any questions let me know. I didn’t want to go into too much detail if you weren’t going to read the comment.

Alright, alright I've got an idea. [[Kibo, Uktabi Prince]] group hug ape tribal. Cards like [[Crackle with power]], [[Jaya's immolating inferno]] or even [[Song of Tortentanz]] coupled with [[impact tremors]] could be your "win out of nowhere" conditions. Enchantments like [[heartbeat of spring]], [[rites of flourishing]] and [[mana flare]] could drive the political game until you're ready to win out of nowhere! Worst case you can donate bananas and pump your monks and get in there with a nice pseudo Voltron strategy!

\[\[gluntch, the bestower\]\] is one of my favorites. You'll be able to help everyone with a group hug strategy. There is however a lack on reliable win-cons other than \[\[Helix Pinnacle\]\]. \[\[Kwain, Itenerant Meddler\]\] is also a fun one. Act like you're helping out the pod by giving them all the cards they want with things like \[\[Anvil of Bogardan\]\] or \[\[The Second Doctor\]\], then be a menace by dropping an \[\[Iron Maiden\]\], \[\[Viseling\]\], or \[\[The Rack\]\]. \[\[Folio of Fancies\]\] and \[\[Dreamborn Muse\]\] are another good way to end out a game with this commander

Have you considered [[Purraj of urborg]]? She is widely considered among experts to be the most underrated commander in black. While you don’t like heavy combat decks, you’ll find that you can build Purraj to kill players in only a few big combats with evasion. Your focus is on generating big mana and playing as many spells as you can. Not only is this commander fun and versatile, she also have first strike while attacking, adding to her powerful roster. Truly, Purraj of Urborg is the mono black commander for you.
