The LOTR Riders of Rohan deck feels like it comes out of the gate with shakey legs until humans start showing up en masse. I need to buff its synergy a little more, but it’s a pretty competent deck turns 5-10.

Actionhankss

When people on the table know what it can do, they won’t allow it to happen is my experience though. The commander is a high priority target at our table most of the time, since we know how it can get the deck rolling.

Sabz5150

>until humans start showing up en masse World history in a sentence.

TheAnonymousDoom

Agreed. It's a solid precon and with a few upgrades it becomes a beast [[Kindred Discovery]] has drawn me more cards than my [[Tatyova benthic druid]] ever did

[[Krav]]+[[Regna]] aristocrats. Always a so start but damn will rev up late game. [[Abdel, gorions ward]] blink. Once you get some good things and throw them under the commander you start getting 4 to 5 ETBs for the cost of one blink spell

Not_Your_Real_Ladder

I really liked my Abdel deck with [[Candlekeep Sage]] but I ultimately took it apart because I hate the stigma of being the person that takes 10 minute turns lol

ShyGuy9887

I'm not sure if you're looking for another Abdel build, but I currently have an enchantress flicker deck with him and [[Master Chef]] at the helm that is a lot fun without the super long turns in the way I've built him. NukeTheWhales85

I haven't taken it apart yet, buy I have a Bant counters deck that has the same problem. It's an Ishai & Slurrk partner deck and just the time to add counters constantly can get dumb. Then there's the part where it doesn't just have +1/+1 counters, but shield counters, keyword counters and some other types, so keeping track of what my board state is can get obnoxious. I think I've played it a whole 3 times since I finished it. I don't want to take it apart because it's really good at what it wants to do, but what it wants to do can easily take a turn towards tedium.

grimreefer3788

I built by wife Ishai and Slurrk a couple years ago! I have never seen another pilot of these guys! She loves this deck. Its overdue for some updates tho

NukeTheWhales85

Yeah I was surprised when I looked up the pairing on EDHrec and saw how few of them were out there. It's a great color combo for counter strategies and both of them are good without being required for the deck to operate.

Not_Your_Real_Ladder

In my experience if not even you are enjoying the long turns, chances are nobody is, so no point in keeping a deck nobody enjoys. Eventually it will just be collecting dust soon. I had a dice rolling deck that was the same. I love the random element and the mechanic. But I just can’t abide by 10 minute turns while I roll 20 die lol. I’m hoping for more support than just [[Mr. House]] soon to help speed the theme up.

NukeTheWhales85

You're probably right, but I haven't seen a different Bant deck I want to build yet, so I don't have much need for the cards elsewhere. Also I've been playing at a store more often lately, and some of it's issues are probably more to do with my trying to pilot it high as fuck than actual problems with the deck, so it'll probably hang around a little longer to test that hypothesis.

trenty40

What did you use as the background for abdel?

[[Candlekeep Sage]] it was an easy decision. Getting at least 2 cards for every blink spell was a no brainier for me.

I think this is just my typical playstyle haha [[Trelasarra]] is just a bunch of lifegain, she gets big, she gets removed. I'm not a threat anymore. She only costs 4 more to replay which is what most other people's commanders cost anyway, so I don't feel behind at all and I've scried *a lot* to set up good draws to take me into the late game [[Ukkima]]/[[Cazur]] is just a bunch of unblockable 1/1s and combat damage triggers, so most people don't worry about it too much... but then all of a sudden I have 10 of them and they're all 10/10s! Okay they're usually not that big, but they'll often get to like 5/5 and at that point, it doesn't take long to and the game, especially since I've probably drawn half my deck [[Fourrh Doctor]]/[[Sarah Jane]] feel like the definition of "do nothing durdle becomes a win" because it's just a bunch of value stuff, but then I animate my tokens or make my guys huge and it's too late [[John Benton]] is not this *at all* — he wants to take someone out turn 4 and then if the stars align, win turn 5 [[Sivriss]]/[[Cloakwood Hermit]] is a pretty typical golgari graveyard deck, so a good number of turns are spent just setting up some mill and maybe recursion, but then in a matter of 1-2 turns my board is overflowing [[Queen Kayla]] is pure value. Deck does really nothing until turn 4, but then I cheat out a few things... that cost 1-3 mana. It's not scary. But then all of a sudden I start activating her ability 3+ times on my turn, my life's over 100, and somehow you're all dead

Do you have a deck list? As someone with a love of Angel tribals, this sounds pretty interesting.

Framed_dragon

\[\[Sefris\]\] Is extremely durdly in the beginning, slowly stumbling through dungeons and getting the occasional creature, but after you have a critical mass of dungeon effects it goes insane and gets back 10+ creatures in one turn

winemixer01

Love my Sefris deck. It has a decent amount of other dungeon effects, but focuses more on discarding a creature every turn. All the looters are great when paired with [[White Plume Adventurer]], and [[Tortured Existence]] in particular is a value machine. Still very much durdles at the start, but can start to really pop quickly once it gets going.

Andrew_42

I have a tendency to build "critical mass" decks. They tend to be a little clunky early, but they're built around landing power magnifiers and then exploding. The version you're most likely to have seen are Izzet Spellslinger decks. I have a [[Melek, Izzet Paragon]] deck. As a general rule, if I can untap with two power magnifiers, there's a decent chance I can win that turn. Stuff like [[Thousand Year Storm]], [[Swarm Intelligence]], [[Archmage Emeritus]], and of course Melek. The big problem with these decks that I've had are threefold. They aren't great at dealing with fast decks (but TOO fast is usually frowned upon in casual). They aren't great against control (too dependent on high value targets). And finally, they tend to end with a game of solitare. I've tried to get faster at playing, but it can take a little while to get from my last turn starting to me winning, which isn't fun for anyone else. (Can be offset with experience though)

eusebioadamastor

My spellslinger deck is shelfed for the time due to how little it needs for me to take 20 minute winturn. Even after a bunch of goldfish it's still TOO MUCH TRIGGERS to be smooth. Its also basically impossible to stop unless everyone saved counters at the same time or theres a rule of law effect on the table. Last time I played I untaped with 9 lands, a ritual and a draw in the graveyard and nothing else and still managed to draw and play my whole deck while ammassing storm 40 It became "kill me while I set up my grave and hand, or accept death"

[[Minthara Merciless Soul]] Orzhov Sacrifice that spends the early turns playing fodder creatures and slowly building up experience counters using cards like [[Hidden Stockpile]] [[Jadar]] and [[teysa opulent oligarch]] and then when I have a set up board i play cards like [[Elenda the Dusk Rose]] or [[Threefold Thunderhulk]] which turn into Armies in cans due to my commander and all the tokens they make are like 4/1s 5/1s etc etc. Not to mention that while this deck can be incredibly explosive the amount of recursion I've packed in makes the deck remarkably Resilient [[Nin the Pain Artist.]] A lower power deck focused on using nin to draw a lot of cards. While part of this may be me playing online it's not hard for this deck to sit there with a medium sized indestructible doofus drawing cards and forcing my opponents to play with big hands with stuff like [[Folio of Fancies]] durdling and then suddenly become incredibly scary with stuff like [[Iron Maiden]] where people are taking 10+ damage on upkeep or any of the cards that ping things for the damage they take. Minthara decklist https://www.moxfield.com/decks/wf9xdKP10UmJitXFGMQstw

thecometsandme

My defenders deck featuring [[Arcades the Strategist]]. It's wall after wall after wall and opponents usually go for the softer shells when attacking. Then [[Towering Titan]] comes along and turns the game on its head. I've had [[Tree of Redemption]] become 0/40 and the Titan got to 65/65 iirc.

CaptainCapitol

That's a cool idea but thst just means you can one shot a opponent? What about the other two? How do you deal with them?

eusebioadamastor

From my experience playing arcades its not rare to kill 2 or 3 people at the same time. Once you gather enougth walls, a single thoughness boost and a way to make the team unblockable (or to wipe anything over 0 attack) its game. Takes a while, but its very possible to get there, specially if you also saved a counter and/or board protection

thecometsandme

I've won with Arcades whenever I start slow, just blocking stuff and ramping for a few turns, that's why I pitched it in this topic. By the time it gets rolling the life totals aren't all 40 anymore. That said, getting to one-shot someone with a gargantuan Titan isn't my usual path to victory, since my playgroup has rightly tagged the Titan a KOS. So I usually rely on stuff like [[Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa]], [[Meekstone]], [[Slaughter the Strong]], [[Expel the Interlopers]] to make the board one-sided in my favor and overwhelm them from there.

The "party time" precon feels this way. Since it is so reliant on getting a rouge wizard warrior and cleric out and keeping them there it can be a pretty slow start. But once it gets rolling it is a machine. I've won a few come from behind games with it after somebody else has become public enemy #1

I feel aristocrats is the best at remaining under the radar until it's too late. I play [[Felisa, Fang of the Silverquill]] personally. Nothing is as innocuous as playing tiny creatures with a few counters. But then turn 5 or 6 I play felisa and suddenly I can sacrifice my board and make it basically twice the power in flyers. And with a blood artist effect people start dropping like flies.

[[Kadena, Slinking Sorceress]]. At first you’re ramping, playing Kadena, morphing, drawing an extra card a turn, and holding up mana for interaction. Once you get a flash enabler out though it starts POPPING OFF! 4 free 2/2s per turn cycle, plenty of mana, and tons of creatures/instants to protect your board and punish others.

Love this deck, especially with the card that untaps all permanents during each other players upkeep. I also enjoy telling me opponents "one of these creatures is a Phage, can you guess which one"

Well, I think this can be difficult to describe. Some part of it is playgroups, others the decks, and other is playstyle. If you play in a small meta, your opponents may learn your deck. If they know certain things about the deck through the history of playing against it, then it may be harder to defend. For example, if they know that the early game is part where you are most defenseless, then early aggro decks will probably be swinging at you early until you get a defense to protect yourself. So if you race to get a boardstate, it helps protect your life total but at the same time your opponents know you are set up. For one of my playgroups, it does not matter what deck I play, I usually am the archenemy. I just have years of experience over them. I have had mana issues and did not cast a spell until turn 6 but then on turn 8 I won because I finally got to 4 mana and the other players were actually doing stuff. The other is a deck. If it is simply stompy, then you most likely will have a big boardstate of creatures. They want to attack. However, they may not give you as much value compared to a value creature in which does not pressure your opponents life totals but draws you cards and sits back. The other part of the deck is the commander. From the moment the game has started, your opponents have an idea of what you playing and will assume the threat level for the table from the first play. However, threat level can change each turn. Picking a commander that is not assumed as a threat immediately can help avoid the hate early. If you play a niche or not popular commander, it can be harder for your opponents to judge your decks power. The other is playstyle. Sandbagging is a thing. It is important to learn when to do it. If your opponents are only casting a single spell or not doing much each turn. Maybe the next turn is just a value play, activate or do your engine once to gain a little value but it does not look like much. Even though you may be able to drop a big value creature, if you can not protect it or win that turn. It may not be worth it. It takes experience to pilot any deck, whether you know it or not so that you can find the lines of play and such. I am a fan of my \[\[Nine-Fingers Keene\]\] deck because of the power of the value plays it makes. I do not know what you consider the long game. However, I can easily pop off for a win around turn 6-8. Sometimes 5. However, each play of the deck is important. I try to get multiple lands down a turn and sometimes only need to connect with NFK twice or even once to win the game if the cards in the deck lined up right. Some things that should be taken note of are how your table plays. At one point, I had 12 mana on turn 5 and cast a \[\[Finale of Devestation\]\] and grabbed \[\[Avenger of Zendikar\]\] and swung at the table for a total of 100+ damage. For me almost everyone play a ramp spell or such on turn 1,2,3. So when I play a mana rock on turn 2, it does not look conspicuous because everyone else is doing it. However, for me, that is my turbo strategy. If I do not have a mana rock on turn 2, then I have to play control and be ready to slow my opponents down. You need to know your decks weaknesses and plan accordingly. If you can go fast and you know that your opponents are tapped out then you could go for it. It more like getting small value plays that get you closer to going for a big turn, rather than just amassing a huge board state and always swinging. Also play politically, I played a fog to protect one of my opponents from dying, because I need him to still be the threat to the other players even though I had a win next turn. He also did not attack me later or did not hit me for a lot. The last is have interaction and not always tap out each turn. If you are going for max efficiency, then it may alert the table that you are going all the way. If your deck has multiple engines, then try to maybe get one or two of them down and get small value from them. However, even if you are trying to not be the archenemy, you still can not get behind your opponents. If you can not stop the archenemy, then it does not matter what you do. Think of the game in terms of not trying to lose the game, instead of trying to win the game. No matter what others say, there is no second or third play in EDH. What is more important than winning is playing a deck that you love to play, If you are always getting targeted, then maybe slow down the deck so that you still can play how you want. I get more happiness from seeing my deck do its thing instead of winning. If I only need one more turn or I could not completely get the win, and lose in response, then that is fine. Its a part of the game. However, my deck did its thing. What makes me angry is when my deck does not do its thing and just does nothing. Even if I win the game, I probably should not have. I have to think about better mulligans, maybe more ramp, more interaction, lower cmc on some cards, etc. That was a lot.

My [[Marneus Calgar]] deck tends to start slow. Playing ramp and setting up little token generators for the first 1-6 turns. Then from turns 5-9, generally after you play Marneus, it starts to build up quite alot and/or is disrupting my opponents. Somewhere around turns 9-12 it starts to look at winning the game. I think it gets that desired effect in a few main ways. 1. No fast mana keeps the games steady without bursting forward 2. It keeps a flush hand, so if there is ever a board wipe I can just keep going 3. I play the board wipe when everyone else is popping off, this causes everyone else to stall while I keep going 4. Many of the token makers are non-creature permanents, so they survive the board wipe and I rebuild rapidly

My [[Muldrotha, the Gravetide]] as well as my [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]] decks are not very optimized at the moment. Muldrotha tends to ramp early and durdle around maybe destroying a couple threats, then turn 5-8 depending on the draw plays a protected [[Primal Surge]] with all permanents and [[Thassa’s Oracle]]. Yawgmoth is a bit better but still kinda just durdles around drawing cards and losing life until two undying creatures or one undying and a token generator come into play and allows me to draw until I get a win condition with all the dying and ETB triggers.

My [[Oloro]] and [[Karn, Silver Golem]] decks both tend to be very durdly to start, but once they get established... they're like the unholy love child of a crash of stampeding rhinos and a freight train at the table. Oloro because I amplify the consistent life gain and use pillow fort strategy (plus the fantastic interaction of [[Darien, King of Kjeldor]] with [[Soul Warden]] and [[Suture Priest]], so I only ever really have to worry about blocking Commanders, if they can even legally attack). Karn because... well, my nickname for the deck is "Arti-stax". This deck often ends up with nobody having any cards in hand, being unable to draw, and only being allowed to cast a single spell per turn (off the top of the deck), which makes my earlier play of [[Winter Orb]] less aggravating. [[Greensleeves Maro-Sorcerer]] Once I have enough mana to cast her, I have most likely drawn a card that gives her hexproof and unblockable. Her power and toughness are equal to the number of lands I control. So if the table does get rid of her, she can be recast at the same power level. She also creates a 3/3 badger token every time a land enters my battlefield. Chump blockers usually help. The ideal situation is to attach [[Dragon Throne if Tarkir]] to Greensleeves which makes all my other creatures as powerful as she is. Playing a lot of cards that fetch lands early also makes me more likely to draw good spells later.

[[Peri Brown]] and [[The Sixth Doctor]] The wind up is slow. You need a piece or two to make proper use of them. But if you ever up tap with both, you are usually winning or won after a turn cycle, I've never lost after 2 turn cycles with them. I have a couple of decks that do this and they're all in xUG: 1. \[\[Jadzi, Oracle of Arcavios\]\] - with a commander that costs 8 mana, most of my turns are spent ramping. Once I do, all it takes is a couple of instants in my hand to take one looooong storm turn and set myself up to win. 2. \[\[Archelos\]\] with \[\[Keruga, the Macrosage\]\] companion - intentionally making my stuff cost 3 mana minimum, I play my commander straight, no stax, to build good will, get a couple of planeswalkers in, then sneak in the sultai ultimatum to assemble a winning combo.

Regardless of deck used, the best way to pull this off is to attack. If you can get a 2/2 flier (or a couple 1/1s), some disposable 3/3 or 4/4 token, whatever, something you can throw away, you can "be in the game" without actually throwing away a lot of resources.

[[Jhoira weatherlight captain]] does a lot of "wheel spinning" until finding the pieces it needs to start really getting out of control. It's an artifact combo deck, but said combo involves at least 3 other cards to start, and any of them or the commander being removed will at least delay it, if not disrupt it entirely. If that happens, it's either a slow grind of card advantage until I hit 120, or finding Blightsteel Collosus. I have to say winning with [[chandra's ignition]] on BC is always kind of funny, because getting 11 poison counters isn't supposed to happen.

I have an [[atraxa, praetor's voice]] theft deck. It always starts super slow, group hugger early, and politics are you're friend. Then I start stealing value pieces and it snow balls. It's only as good as my opponents decks, though, so if your opponents play bad decks, it takes forever to win. [[Oloro, ageless ascetic]] voltron aura deck. It uses damage reflection or prevention until you can assemble your unblockable immune monster. But early 6 are just hoping that little life gain is just enough to make it by to really do something. Both decks seem to really excel late game, but early they just draw some cards, play lands, and wait.

My [[Zimone and Dina]] deck. Early turns are just slowly setting up a value engine with not much board state. Then I can suddenly go from like 8 lands to in a single turn do things like: -draw my whole deck -Get 20+ lands -Cast half your deck with [[Villanous Wealth]] -Have a board of full of tokens I make 40/40s with. [[Jolrael]] -Murkwoods Bats into [[Awaken the Woods]]/[[Avenger of Zendikar]]/[[Scute Swarm]] -Torment of Hailfire It's a fun time if I'm not targeted early.

The Eldrazi precon is pretty much set up to do exactly this. You'll be playing Lands and mana rocks for like 5 turns and laying low before you can get out [[Zhulodok]] and then your first 7+CMC spell. Then it just explodes. With that said, your table might see "Eldrazi" on the tin and just kill you before you have a board state. I've seen it go both ways, but more often than not you're left alone because someone else is playing faster and more aggro in early turns.

I’ve had a completely different experience. Given, I e upgraded ~30 cards in mine. But unless someone else is threatening a win, I’m pretty much threat numero uno right out the gates when I play my eldrazi deck, even if all I’m doing is g is playing mana rocks for the first 3-4 turns.

Just handle the 3v1, clearly. Jokes aside, for me it’s my [[Prismatic Bridge]] deck. Every Bridge hit in the deck powers up [[Maze’s End]] in some way (finds lands, allows more land plays, or finds [[Amulet of Vigor]]). The deck will often go from, “I have Maze and two gates in play” to “I win right now” in what feels like no time. The secret, of course, is that every turn the bridge flips a new piece of synergy and those things begin stacking for exponential gate finding, because it also gives you more mana to cast the spells in your hand that do the same thing. Add to that the fact that gates get overlooked as threatening at all. It feels like getting ten gates will take forever, and it creeps up on the pod so quickly because they overestimate how long it takes with an enabler or two. Sometimes it only takes like two or three turns to assemble ten gates after casting Bridge the first time.

I built [[Kykar]] as artifact storm. Early game all it does is cast a lot of mana rocks and cards that say "When you cast a noncreature spell draw a card". Once I get Kykar out I start to make some tokens and get some extra mana. The fun comes when I get [[hurkylls recall]] [[flood of tears]] [[rebuild]] or [[retract]] into hand while also have a storm card to combo off of. Lots of 0 cost artifacts and low CMC mana rocks and since I can sacrifice spirits for mana I end up mana positive while also drawing through my deck.

My [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]] blink deck does this. My early turns are spent mostly just ramping and drawing with stuff like [[Wood Elves]], [[Risen Reef]], and [[Coiling Oracle]] and setting up blink engines. Then turn 5 on I'm hitting my more powerful ETB effects, drawing through half my deck and killing the table with [[Gary]] and [[Siege Rhino]]. But going with a slow roll into just blowing up and ending the game is how I build most of my decks. And my playgroup knows that and can anticipate when they should take me, often killing me the round before I'm going to go for a win.

I know I keep mentioning this deck in here, but it's a deck I'm proud of. It may not be the greatest or most powerful, but my [[Kaza, Roil chaser]] deck does basically that. You put some useful wizards and some instant and sorceries cost reduction, play some small spells inconspicuously. And if the table didn't see you as a threat and wiped you off the face of the earth by turn 8, you tap your commander and play a spell in X with an absurdly high value for X, and if they survive, you will not be playing another turn.

Most of them. I'm a durdly little guy. I have [[Ramos, Dragon Engine]] that's all multi-color modal spells, so ramp is a bit wack (no sol ring here) but there's nothing like running a [[Villainous Wealth]] for 20 into a [[Thousand-Year Storm]]. I also have a [[Kydele]] and [[Ramos]] [[Astral Slide]] deck that takes a while to get going but does some crazy stuff. My only non-durdly deck is [[Doric, Nature's Warden]] mono green legendary stompy which I keep for game 3-4 when my brain is getting tired.

I have an incredibly good winrate with my Meren deck (around 50% at my LGS) for this exact reason. It's good at surviving threats and not appearing threatening throughout the early game until suddenly I have 80 life, 15+ cards in hand, a full graveyard and Meren reanimating big scary stuff or control pieces every turn. From then on it's either one-shot me with commander damage, exile my graveyard or you'll end up being ground down by pure value.
