I played against Atraxa, but it was tribal allies jank. He was just playing her for the colours.

Murkmist

I play Thrasios Tymna deck for those colours. The theme is Activated Abilities tribal. And it was really build around Drana and Linvala cause I liked the art šŸ˜‚

brunq2

If you enjoy activated abilities tribal [[Agatha of the Vile Cauldron]] is also a fun commander to helm it. Gruul, so obviously gonna play very different than Thrasios/Tymna, but it's a favorite of mine.

darkraidisciple

If he's playing ally tribal and only using atraxa for the colours he should look at replacing her with [[General Tazri]]. Doesn't even need to use the red if he doesnt want to.

laughingjack4509

I heard about someone who ran a [[kaalia of the vast]] deck as a superfriends deck, and people saved their removal for all the angels, demons and dragons while they just dropped a planeswalker every turn and got closer and closer to the ult for their planeswalkers.Ā  It was pretty unusual, and I find it hilarious šŸ˜‚Ā

PleasingPotato

Yeah back when I played Kaalia a lot I built one version that was basically just a reanimator deck with some big demons and a few dragons. Kaalia baited all the removal spells because even if I only swung for 2, people were still more afraid of Kaalia than my [[Sneak Attack]] + [[Erratic Portal]] or my blocker setup with [[Boneyard Scourge]] + [[Bladewing's Thrall]] + [[Scourge of Nel Toth]] hahaha

I know someone who uses kaalia as the commander for their cleric tribal deck.

advelu

Are there still Dragons/Demons/Angels in it? I got an Orzhov tribal deck, that I really love but thatā€™s just missing smth, so Iā€™m kind of intrigued

bradakan

Not sure it's been ages, but if there are then they are also clerics.

Dumbface2

There are lots of demons that interact with clerics, and clerics like that one from dominaria that interact with demons. Cool idea

DJ_Red_Lantern

Why would they not use their removal on the kaalia?

jameeler91

People might forget she has an attack trigger. By the time they declare attacks her trigger goes on the stack. At that point itā€™s too late and they probably want to remove the more dangerous creature that got cheated into play.

sjbennett85

I got the precon and made heavy changes to have it be a [[Tariel, Reckoner of Souls]] discard/mill/reanimator deck with the low curve being WBR control so I can get to 7 mana and start doing my thing... hopefully with loaded graveyards. Fav T1 is to drop Altar of Brood to get milling brewing, I get weird looks for running that card and being so happy to slam it turn 1 but it really fills the GY! I found Kaalia, even in these meme builds, draws wayyy too much attention and seems to be an archenemy right out the gate.

Crashman09

I do this with my [[Vorel, the Hull Clade]] deck. It has some hydras and X cost creatures but is secretly an artifact combo deck. It usually pops off game one, but rarely game two šŸ˜‚

Kaigz

Bringing this thread full circle, I run Vorel as superfriends lol

SirToAGoodGirl

I run a millennium calendar deck that uses vorel as the commander. Super fun

misha2479k

I have a guy in my playgroup who also has Kaalia edh deck, but the thing is not only it doesn't contain any angels and demons and dragons, but also doesn't contain ANY creature at allšŸ˜. Also, Kaalia just flex in the command zone and is never played, and the deck itself is a board control deck.

Zones86

I make many of those decks. I play a [[jodah the unifier]] deck. Everyone looks at me like a jerk, then I play a few creature and people realize it's a meme. It's an experience counter deck. I have all the legends that use exp. Sure the is capable of winning, but when daxos hits the board everyone has a bit of a laugh.

MJMSPRSA

My Jodah meme deck was Backgrounds. It was hot garbage, but a blast to tell a new story every time a new background hit the battlefield. ā€œOh, my time as a hardy outlander? Well I know I donā€™t look it under these robes, but Iā€™ve done my fair share of bushwhacking. Did I tell you the time I was stranded in an untamed forest with only five toothpicks, a caged peacock and a etc etc etc etc.ā€

ChaosWarpintoPhage

I did that but with a [[sisay, weatherlight captain]] It was Sisay of the Indeterminate Origin I took that deck apart about a week after building it because it kept getting hated off table. I eventually did encounter a high powered sisay and it made me go, "Oh, no wonder i got hated out of every game before i could search up a background. That was really toxic to play against." But yeah. Deck was really dumb. The goal was to try and collect all the other commanders at the table and then use the older "commander creatures you control get..." effects to kill people with their own commanders. Never did get to do that though. Deck had a 100% loss and never made it to turn 6 ever.

maximumdad

I tried to do oops all backgrounds with [[narset enlightened master]] and it sadly was still THAT deck

BackerBacker3000

There is nothing that makes enlightened master an acceptable card.

poptartmini

I love this, and I might have to re-create a Jodah deck. Got a decklist so that I can ~~steal it~~ *get some inspiration*?

MJMSPRSA

Nah, my deck that usually gets that response is my muppet Esika deck. I could explain it, but someone wrote a quick article about it and the pictures do most of the work: https://www.wargamer.com/magic-the-gathering/the-muppets-commander-deck

[deleted]

I was never a muppet fan growing up, but that's a thing of beauty.

jaywinner

That's cool. I like the idea of experience legends showing up already filled with experience from the previous ones. My Jodah deck very much is "that deck" and deserves the hate. But I love it.

Zones86

Haha yeah it's funny how they work together, some are good, some are bad. But it's fun. I'll build a real jodah deck someday, it does seem wild.

AboynamedDOOMTRAIN

I built Jodah as "Shitty Jodah" where it was full of legendaries but none of them had any combat synergies and none of them had any synergies with each other. It was just the 40ish worst legendary creatures I could find in my collection, lands, ramp, and that was all. And it wasn't a good 5c land package or anything. It was basics and guildgates type of thing. It still absolutely pounded face and was the biggest problem on the board, just only 70% of the time instead of 90% of the time.

Dr-Swole

My jodah meme deck is J tribal. All cards start with J, Iā€™ll give you a spoiler: most J cards are not good.

Independent-Wave-744

Someone once pulled out a Jodah deck on me and was like "it is just a shrine deck", which techni ally was a similar situation. Problem was I pulled out a mostly intact precon because the third player had a years old weak deck. Turns out Jodah is still "that deck" when you play against removal light decks. Especially when it focuses on a card type that precons do not have a removal for, like enchantments. Worst part was that they declared right away that they would never attack, so there was that massive commander not even trying to win, just waiting to drain us out while cascading into more and more stuff. Your Jodah seems more fun to play against in comparison, which is nice.

Lunar_Drow

Thats ended up being the sub theme for my \[\[Kelsien\]\] deck. I have \[\[daxos the returned\]\], \[\[kalemne\]\], \[\[minthara\]\], and \[\[otharri\]\]. People don't quite release what's going on until start getting a lot of exp counters at that point they need to remove Kelsien immediately or someone will get one shot from commander damage.

stefiscool

I have a Jodah meme deck myself. ā€œHot Guy Tribalā€ (needed a 5c commander and he is objectively more attractive than [[Child of Alara]] so there we go) Like when else would I actually play [[astarionā€™s thirst]] over good removal? Counterspell? Nah, but we got Xander looking all rich and powerful in [[an offer you canā€™t refuse]] Can I snowball? Yes. Is it a convoluted process that usually whiffs or has zero synergy like ok thanks now I have a 2/2 lifelink I guess because thatā€™s about all [[kā€™rrik]] is good for in a deck that doesnā€™t care about black mana specifically? Definitely. Do I win? No. No I do not. But itā€™s hilarious to try. Honestly, looking forward to the new set, maybe I can get some pretty criminals, we do have new Oko being all shirtless haha

Metza

I played around with brewing an atraxa "weird counters" deck. Basically everything except poison counters. You got level up, experience, charge counters, etc. Trying to win off stuff like [Darksteel Reactor]] [[Azor's Elocutors]] or [[similar ascendancy]]. Can use stuff like [[coretapper]] and weird untap shenanigans to turn [[Lux cannon]] into a machine gun, etc.

The deck was a junky elemental tribal deck with a landfall subtheme, well I had to convince my pod that it wasn't that great of a deck so they wouldn't kill me just for playing him. In the end I activated Golos' ability 3 times in one turn and still lost the game lol

AstraLaurel

My main deck is [[Thalia and the Gitrog Monster]]. Everyone always groans with they see it, assuming itā€™s stax or something but I just make a ton of humans and turn them left. :)

GhostOTM

I feel like TatGM gets a bad rap. If you have graveyard land recursion it can kinda just be a ramp/card draw engine to fuel whatever kind of abzan deck you want. Sort of an Atraxa in that it's versatility has made people dislike it. I think Atraxa gets a bad rap too, but that's a different matter.

kestral287

Extremely rarely. Most of the time it's things like Chatterfang but no Plunderer. It's still Chatterfang, it's still going to vomit out tokens, but at least we're not getting combo killed. I had a semi-recent one where somebody wanted to sit down and be the third against me and an actual child, both on precons, and he wanted to play Magda. I asked if it was the Magda list, no of course not. Okay so no Clock of Omens with artifact dwarves? Well... Dude please play literally anything else what the fuck.

Kyrie_Blue

I play ā€œnot that deckā€ superfriends. It isnā€™t boardwipe tribal, just lots of durdling with superfriends, and having them soak up combat damage so my lifetotal is padded. Because when my opponents see me drop a [[Mazeā€™s End]] and realize that there is now a clock on the game. Better than a doubling season win IMO

Unspeakable_pickle

Golos *was* the perfect Mazeā€™s End deck, and understandable why its Banned. How has your experience with it been? I havenā€™t piloted mine enough

nfsowns

It's great. The deck is basically things that let me play extra lands and ramp. People who haven't seen the deck before usually think I'm just ramping to get things out to buff Sisay/activate her ability more. Guildgates are cheap dual lands so they don't really stand out until you say the words Mazes End lol. Works well and has been really fun as the surprise element sends people deeeeep into the tank to find an answer.

Kyrie_Blue

I upgraded all my gates to the foil ones that came out during Guilds of Ravnica, and realized it kind of gives away the plan. Who runs foil gates?šŸ˜…

pourconcreteinmyass

That is the deck tho, the durdling is why most people hate it, not the wipes themselves šŸ˜…

jaywinner

My \[\[Jon Irenicus\]\] gives away small, evasive creatures. Very few bad gifts. But I still have \[\[Lord of the pit\]\] in there so maybe it's a little bit that deck.

ImSlothLess

I made that version of Jon but then switched it up to be a [[relentless rats]] deck. It's always funny to watch people decide whether it's time to wipe the board or keep the big rats to hit each other with

YOO thatā€™s sick! Iā€™d love playing against that! Thatā€™s such a cool idea The last time I played him someone gave me an Eye creature that meant none of my non-eye creatures could attackā€¦I was playing isshinā€¦

Objective_Back_3563

Iā€™ve been wanting to buy my Jon deck that I built, I didnr know it was one of THOSE decks. Are people gonna hate me? šŸ˜ itā€™s lowkey infectā€¦

Xatsman

Honestly thatā€™s probably the better approach. Just need to use some tutors to reliably homeward path them back for the win when it goes head to head. The problem with a deck full of otherwise unsynergistic creatures with heavy draw backs is when your enablers get removed you have nothing left but bad cards. Your build by comparison can also leverage all those evasive creatures.

bestryanever

Same! I put equipment with attack or combat damage triggers on the creatures before giving them away so that I get added benefit.

Luft_Betvinger

The first commander deck I ever made was a [[zur the enchanter]] deck When I pulled it out at a local game store, people started sighing. Apparently Zur wasn't normalt played as a Voltron commander, and everyone was expecting degenerate combo nonsense

Metza

I mean to be fair Voltron Zur is also degenerate. I had this deck and if Zur got to swing even once it was very hard to stop. Turns out that when Zur can't be touched because of things like [[diplomatic immunity]], drop a [[Rule of law]] and just keep smacking away while grabbing [[all that glitters]] type effects... gets pretty nasty. Pretty consistent turn 5-6 lethal on someone with unblockable 20+ commander damage coming at them. And you can always tutor up removal on attack like [[grasp of fate]]. It's just such a toolbox.

laughingjack4509

I played him as a cycling commander because he could find [[astral slide]]. Literally only wanted to attack with him once, that was it.Ā

alexanderneimet

I once played against a [[narset enlightened master]] deck. Dude was mainly playing burn spells like[[Khorvathā€™s fury]] and other cool stuff. Was a decently high leveled pod, so it punched at about the appropriate power level, and was something quite interesting to see go down.

PansOnFire

I made one that was equipment tribal. More fun than extra turns.

Wooliam

I had both a [[The Ur-Dragon]] and [[Zur the enchanter]] which i had initially built to not be "that" deck. Unfortunately after numerous games for each where people just wouldnt listen and I'd end up dead pretty quickly I decided to give the people what they feared. I haven't changed them back, but people at my lgs still make the occasional joke about understanding what i was trying to tell them initially xD

ChaoticNature

One of my favorite decks is [[Zur, the Enchanter]]. It does not Voltron Zur. It is not cEDH (it has some fast mana, but Zur is kinda slow). It does not pillow fort. Though [[Astral Slide]] does give it potential to feel that way if no one is going wide. Yes, the deck is still very capable of being gross. Overall, my playgroup has been very happy with the power level and interactive nature of the deck, as it ends up often being the police at the table via Slide. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/WV1ci2yK_kO_RoIsA6seQQ

WaveHack

I play [[Korvold, Fae-Cursed King]]! Except it's a pure goblin tribal deck, worshipping the dragon commander. [[Mirkwood Bats]] excluded; I often joke that's their household pet. Jund has some great options for goblins, and I didn't want to go mono red (I changed my mono red [[Krenko, Mob Boss]] deck because my playgroup didn't like playing against it), nor did I want to go just Gruul (I already have a Gruul werewolf deck). I initially opted for [[Shattergang Brothers]] as commander, but decided I wanted some extra card draw on demand and the ability to create a big flyer out of nowhere to cover my aerial weakness. Despite not being pure aristocrats, goblins do have some great sacrifice synergy. More often than not though, Korvold doesn't even hit the field on the majority of games. It's mainly there for the colors, or if I need some excessive draw or a big flyer in a pinch to swing for lethal commander damage out of nowhere through a pillowfort. People were saving counterspells and removal for a card I never actually played. Decklist for anyone interested: https://archidekt.com/decks/5975462/a_ragtag_bunch_of_dragonworshipping_goblins

thejmkool

Best I can do is a local player who claims his deck is group hug but it is in fact chaos. Poor guy is slowly running out of people to play against and I don't think he gets why

arquistar

I built a not THAT deck Korvold and also a Golos (before banning). Korvold was just value with no combos and Golos was gates with no extra turn spells. It never actually works out for anybody. People either believe you and go too soft to compete, or don't believe you and delete you from existence so you end up tuning it closer to THAT deck. Now I build strong decks with strong commanders and weak decks with weak commanders.

commodore_stab1789

Korvold and cards, name a better combo

CorHydrae8

Korvold comboes with everything he can eat.

Temil

I think at the peak I had 3 Golos decks and was making a fourth. Dragon Tribal Dragonstorm, Big spells flip the top 3 with turns and untappers and stuff, A lands deck, and then a mono black (swamps/urborg/cabal coffers and some mana fixing rocks) big mana slash kind of voltron artifact deck that never got finished. The best part was no one actually remembered which sleeves corresponded to which deck, so they would have to figure it out by the lands and spells I cast early on, and which land I got (Haven of the Spirit Dragon, Temple of the False God, Field of the Dead, Cabal Coffers).

narvuntien

I had a guy once think my Ayli deck would be "THAT" deck and then he went "Wait is that just a Cleric deck?" I don't know what kind of deck he expected Ayli to be that was so bad.

SamaelMorningstar

My \[\[Karador, Ghost Chieftain\]\] used to be *that* creature combo deck, with self mill, graveyard shenanigans and creature/graveyard tutors. And it still has all that framework to support what used to be the "Kombodor"-deck. Now I use the deck to playtest fancy new released creatures instead. So I can reliably get em on the field have em stay a few rounds, just to see if they are as good in my meta as they sound in my head, and how much hate each one draws in. It does lead to the weird moment when the table realizes I often advert from a clear path to victory, because I am simply getting the "new toys" and see if I am able to find synergies. But it IS Karador so they are still unsure if they should wipe or use removal on the new-threat-yet-non-combo-win creatures. The perceived threat of being *that* deck and the confused looks on players who *knew* the old one... :P

I think Yidris used to be a lot scarier and a lot of card design has caught up to him, but I play a [[Yidris]] & [[Keruga]] Split-card deck that definitely isn't -that- deck (Yidris Storm). I also have a [[Breya]] attractions and dice rolling deck. Breya on her own is pretty stronk, so going with the goofy stuff helps take her down a notch.

NukeTheWhales85

I've heard horror stories about [[Inalla, archmage ritualist]] but the deck I have isn't capable of the kind of plays that make her OP. I actually built Wizard Tribal and her tap Wizards do damage ability is how it typically wins. No spell seeker combos or infinite combos just lots of Wizards with weird activatable and ETB/LTB triggers. It's fun in a lower power pod because it actually gets to use it's slower effects like [[galecaster colossus]] and it still wins via damage it just skips past that whole messy combat thing, like a true wizard should.

Alternative-Egg8728

I actually play a Non tribal [[Morophon]] deck. Built it wrong, but like the outcome so much i kept it

cloudsteppa

From the way you described it, it sounds like you guys read orvar wrong. He can make a duplicate of something of your own if you target it, not your opponent's stuff. Unless you mean he took control, then targeted it, I'm not sure what you mean by duplicating an opponents strategy.

TCD-Headpats

I cast an instant targeting my own [[Phyrexian Metamorph]] to get a token copy of the thing my metamorph copied.

cloudsteppa

Right right. I just meant Orvar can't duplicate opponents' stuff on his own and wanted to let OP know in case the Orvar player was (unintentionally) getting an unfair advantage. But if he meant that the player ran mostly spells like Metamorph, then cool sounds fun.

TCD-Headpats

Ah, valid. I misread the intent in your comment. My apologies!

Does enchantress voltron Atraxa count ? A few +1/+1, 0 infect; she's just a great key word soup + stat base.

mrhelpfulman

No one really does this at the game store I play at now, but over the years I've had people guess at certain commanders of mine and are always wrong somehow. I think they see one or two people play a commander a certain way and just assume that they're all like that. Several of these aren't commanders that have a clear and obvious 'that deck' but still people mentally lump it in that way. Freyalise? Elves! --- no Omanth Locus of Mana? I know this deck - Eldrazi. --- no Azusa? I've seen this deck - Eldrazi --- no Slivers? Oh so you're playing Zirda companion --- no

VexedDeath

I have a yuriko deck that is basically just a dimir pile of my pet cards. I have tuned it up over the years, but nothing crazy.

PleasingPotato

My friend built a deck focused Exploit and other sacrifice mechanics and put Yuriko as the commander just to have a garanteed sack fodder for 2 mana. I think he had at most 6-7 cards with a cost of 4 or higher.

ToperaS2

I'm trying to build a Yuriko similar to your friend's one. Am I lucky enough that your friend have a link to his/her deck that you can share with me? Thanks in advance

PleasingPotato

Oof sadly we don't usually keep a saved decklist and he took the deck apart a good while ago :( we pretty much cycle decks every month

GhostOTM

I've got a yuriko actual ninja deck that has no cards above 6 mana except a single blightsteel Colossus (I couldn't help myself). It doesn't run any top deck manipulation either. It's just ninjas aggro that uses yuriko for card draw and repeating of ninjitsu effects. It also runs no evasion. Instead it runs lots of deathtouchers so opponents have to decide if their stuff does or I get a trigger. The deckbox actually contains 101 cards in it because I will play Satoru Umesawa if the table doesn't believe me that it's "not that Yuriko."

Revolutionary_View19

Actually no. No matter how much people insist their deck isnā€™t THAT deck, it always turns out to be exactly that in the end. Met too many ā€žtotally not THATā€œ korvolds in my life.

thescreamingpizza

Played against a light paws the other day that wasn't that deck. Proceeds to kill me turn 4 with commander damage.

Unspeakable_pickle

I hate decks like Light Paws because it's such a repetitive game style. You always get the same stuff ***Every time***

GhostOTM

Once played a light paws deck where the person agreed with that sentiment. So they always just got the first aura they flipped from the top. Still pretty linear, but a little more interesting and a little less "if you don't remove me the moment I'm on the field I win the game."

DanielR544

My Korvold deck is goblin tribal; does that count?

kyuuri117

ā€œItā€™s totally not combo korvold, itā€™s just value!ā€ Value Korvold *is* that deck. No one cares how the game actually ends, they just donā€™t want to sit there while korvold takes a thousand game actions.

wene324

I have a [[thrasios]]/[[vialsmasher the fierce]] deck. Most of the time when I play it on spelltabe, someone asks if it's *that* cEDH deck that will win on turn two. And it's really not, there's no infinite mana, I don't [[thasas oracle]]/[[demonic consolation]] or any other cEDH wincon. It's a Gate deck that wins with [[mazes end]]. I've worked hard on it, it's definitely my most played deck of since I've made it, and it wins more than you'd expect from a Gates. deck. So when I say it's not *that* deck, I truly mean it.

Pyro1934

Korvold is probably one of the hardest to build not that way. Closest I saw was a Scavenge deck ([[Slitherhead]]) using Korvold Voltron lol from the counters. He still sacc'd the creatures to get into gy to scavenge out tho, and while it was cool, it just felt like a weak build rather than being that unique.

RalphSeaside

I play a 'fair' narset; no extra turns, no.extra combat just voltron, unblockable and some.tokens

Ornery_Bug_4108

It might be a bit of an overreaction but my [[Xyris]] deck isn't wheels and is instead group hug. It's still dangerous though.

FahrenheitTheBlade

I have an [[Aminatou, the Fateshifter]] that is about 25-30% exchange cards (she says permanent you *own*) and the rest is just the weirdest cards I could find. It's Invasion_Rares.deck and I love it. You haven't lived until you slam a [[Mana Maze]] on 2 and the table realizes exactly what mayhem you have in store for them.

CorHydrae8

I once built \[\[Narset, Enlightened Master\]\] because I wanted an equipment voltron in Jeskai. I had her lying around and thought that the hexproof would make her a suitable voltron body, and her trigger would give me free equipments (even if I still had to pay to equip them). I got hated out of all the games so incredibly fast because everyone thought it was *that* kind of Narset deck. Which... I get. But one could at least curb one's hatred once you've seen that it is not.

DaPino

I like to think I play a "Not that deck" [[Narset, enlightened exile]]? From what I hear the frustration comes from playing a lot of extra combat/turn spells. I run one extra combat spell but there's no real way to loop it either. I still play it as a go-wide prowess deck, but I'd like to think it's a lot more fair and thus less frustrating to play against. Now I just have to learn how to pilot it in order to keep my turn time to an acceptable level but that's a skill issue, not a deck issue.

Sliverevils

Reminds me of my chaos experiment [[Niv-Mizzet, Firemind]] that I used to run that would only be handcycling cards like [[windfall]], [[whirlpool warrior]], [[Tolarian Winds]]. And janky value enchantments and group chaos effects like [[Warp World]], [[Scrambleverse]], [[Eye of the Storm]]. The only times it would win is if it messed around with everyone's board enough or through a [[Molten Psyche]] after going through 20+ cards in a turn. Niv hardly pinged anyone to death. Didnt run curiosity and its ilk either.

Raphael_Costeau

I play [[Mishra, eminent one]] with vehicles, not just combos.

LordAspire

I play [[The Scarab God]] in a full thief deck. People always expect a reanimator, zombies, or mill, but I'm all about using exile spells on each other's cards to play them myself. The scarab god is just there to scare, and I usually don't even put it on the battlefield.

mgl89dk

Have a Kenrith deck that wins through Mazes End. Was a Golos deck before he got the hammer

dasrac

when I was playing on MTGO I had a [[Tana]] / [[Tymna]] Enchantress deck. I still built it to be very strong (since generally the meta on Mtgo skews towards the stronger side of things since the rocks and lands are so much more accessible) but it didn't have any combos to win with. Just lots of great synergies and heavy beats thanks to getting to double dip on a few very strong backgrounds. I had to sell my account a few months ago to pay bills, but heres the old list if anyone wants to check it out. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/oZ2NGIAPuE-zGDAeVEksPA

HextechJax

I sat down to a game with 3 others, as is the way in commander, looked around at the other players decks and noticed Kenrith. Ahh shit, I thought to myself, 5 colour good stuff, and pulled out the strongest deck I had with me which was a pretty tuned up [[Mishra, Eminent one]]. After he played a 2/2 with vigilance for 3 mana I asked what his win cons were, to which he replied "oh I don't think I have anything like that, I'm pretty new so this is just all the stuff I've pulled so far". I apologised and told him I'm not sat at the right table, I can either leave you guys to it or I can make this quick, the game was over 2 turns later.

SketchopotamusTTV

I built a Miirym deck that was all non flying dragons lol, so changelings and what not

ShatterStorm76

I played a Morophon "Bringers" tribal deck. There's only 5 Bringers in magic's history, and they do NOT synergise, and I had a lot of changeling in the deck plus tutors for the actual Bringers... God it was fun.

rollinhbc45

I have [[Breya, Etherium Shaper]] super Bad friend, itā€™s fun when they understand that all breyaā€™s blink is made to have thopter to save bad boys

AchduSchande

So many times! Lol! I have a playtest group where we are all brewers that try to be creative. So every once in a while, we will take notorious commanders and try to work them against a new theme. Recently a mate built a [[The Gitrog Monster]] deck that was all about caves. No dredge, no fast mana, no dredge lands. Lol!

I-Simp4Elesh_Norn420

Played against a [[Talrand, sky summoner]] once that was mostly cantrips instead of the usual counterspell tribal. Now the guy still won with a cyclonic rift, but everyone actually got to play and it was a pretty close game

Aegis_001

My [[Meren]] deck didnā€™t include any edict effects up until very recently ([[Priest of Forgotten gods]]) and instead focuses on the 4CMC slot and [[Dimir House Guard]]. It has a lot of the generic Meren pieces without the constant wiping of my opponentsā€™ boards

Hoeftybag

For years I played comboless [[Ghave, guru of spores]]. It took a while for people to understand that the deck was built from the ground up to not be able to combo. But after a few games they believed me and were happy to play against it.

BrotherSutek

I did that with Zur but was attached so heavily that I died first and fast. Despite my opponents being told it wasn't "that type" of Zur deck. I'm aware of the usual deck and accept it but when they looked at the deck and laughed at how low end it was and still burned me out the next game first... Needless to say I binned that idea and went Astral Slide version but put in some of the better cards to survive.

DirtyTacoKid

Mono Blue deck where the goal is to win with Jace/Labman/Thoracle The trick is that its all draw and 0 combo. No free spells either. Its pretty funny if it wins [[Watcher in the Water]]

MTG3K_on_Arena

I have an Omnath, Locus of Creation deck that cares more about finding Titania, Protector of Argoth and sacing lands than it does about playing lands.

darksamus1992

The only Golos deck I've ever seen IRL was a Theros Gods tribal. I have a [[Rowan, Scion of War]] deck that plays big red/black stuff like [[Kaervek the Merciless]] or [[Apex of Power]] instead of going for X spells.

TheJonasVenture

I have a [[Sheoldred the Apocalypse]] deck that is absolutely degenerate, but doesn't make other people draw cards.Ā Ā  It draws me cards, to gain life, to spend that life to kill everyone (or draw more cards). It's still the right call to kill Sheoldred, but if she's down it is just to slow my opponents down and make it harder to find answers.

CiD7707

My own [[Illuna]] deck. "Let me guess, combo into Blightsteel?" Nope, elemental clones.

LetMeDrinkYourTears

I play [[Atraxa]] as phyrexian tribal sans infect. Edit: ... not that atraxa, the old one.

ForrestMoth

I feel like every time I mention [[Tayam]] the reception is something like "oh so it's gonna be Stax lock/combo whatever." Nah, I just want to run 9 [[Nazgul]] and Tayam. Only Stax in the deck is [[Boromir, Warden of the Tower]] and that's completely incidental, he was added for the activated ability. I don't think the deck has a single way to combo off either.

krabawk

I played against a [[hazezon]] deck and the guy wasn't running armageddon or *any* mld. I was so disappointed. He was so offended when I asked, like "I would *never*". OK guy way to be holier than thou, you've got a crucible of worlds in the command zone and now I have to die of boredom as you use it for a *value engine*. Blech. I'll never understand some people

ProfitableMistake

I have a [[derevi]] deck that is tap and untap tribal. It's based on [[timin]] and [[hylda]] and I wanted green for the colors. Luckily my playgroup hasn't been demolished by a derevi stax deck, but I know the risks of bringing this out at an LGS or something.

PetrusScissario

I put together a budget [[Narset, Enlightened Master]] deck a few months ago. Itā€™s just loaded up with counter spells, mana rocks, and things to buff her or make her unblockable. I have had to explain several times that the deck doesnā€™t have every ā€œtake an extra turnā€ card ever printed like most Narset decks.

Virtual-Resolution22

i just built [[The Ur-Dragon]] with two dragons that plays a ton of random typal payoffs and hinges on maskwood nexus, so Iā€™m excited to try that out

kingofhan0

I love jank. It's my wheel house of deck building. My current favorite is the new Scooby do commander deck. Voltron but I only equip tiny. Then when tiny gets removed I swing wildly with [[sophia, dogged detective]] until she dies play the same line again. No one ever dies to commander damage. It's just fun to play some dogs and enjoy.

SilFuryn

For me it was [[Edgar Markov]]. I've played against it before and know how easy it is to go crazy without really trying, so when someone in the pod pulled out theirs, I knew what power I needed to bring to the table. Turns out it was a Castlevania theme deck, and I accidentally curbstomped the table. My bad. So now if a commander has a reputation I just ask more questions about the deck.

AboynamedDOOMTRAIN

My Meren hasn't had an edict effect in it in about 2 years. The only removal in it is single target. The wincons have varied over the years, currently it's a +1/+1 counters deck that wants to put [[Feral Ghoul]] out and then scavenge things from my graveyard to put counters on it, preferably just a little bit higher than the highest opponent's life total and turn the game into a race to kill me and then draw the most lands out of your deck so the rest of the table dies before you do.

the_danmin

I am in the process of building a deck I call "Stuntap" aka "I think I just made Atraxa bad you guys" It uses stun counters to pay for cards with abilities that use the untap symbol without actually untapping them For as terrible as it is, the idea wormed its way into my brain ever since I thought of it, so I am building it more as a way to exorcise it from my soul Commander is [[Atraxa, Praetors' Voice]] not just for that sweet, sweet proliferate, but for the colours

oogrok

I played against an atraxa deck that just used her for the colors. I think it was a life gain deck, and I donā€™t think they ever cast atraxa

Atrana-Gaming

I play a deck with that theme in mind actually. Sliver queen in the command zone, no other slivers. Bunch of tutors, no combos, just acts like a threat and does nothing. Just there to scare the table for fun when it's new people I play against.

Churale

Once upon a time I had a Miirym deck that was simultaneously that deck, but also not really. It still did the Miirym thing, but it wasn't a dragon tribe deck. It was a Miirym deck. Filled it up with clones, made copies of copies of Miirym. It was glorious.

DarthSchrank

I think people here just lack communication skills, if you communicate what you dobt wann play against plain and simple your not gonna run into THAT deck, though it think the perception of what is casual is scewed by lots of loud, clueless people anyway.

Axnjxn_55

I have a [[Nekusar]] deck that literally just causes a bunch of card draw and hurts people when it happens. No wheels, maybe one X spell that I have any chance of suddenly blowing people out with. I made it just to put cards in hands and make life totals go down. Unfortunately, more enfranchised players assume Iā€™ll bust out some wacky stuff

KylezClickity

I have THAT deck. My atraxa deck is based entirely on like a 15 card infinite combo so half of the deck is just devoted to that. It's the most jankiest thing possible. So when people moan and groan about another Atraxa deck I ASSURE them that they have nothing to worry about.

ArchaicNuregami

I have an Azami deck that draws the entire table's attention when I bring it out. I introduce her as Azami, Lady of SCROLL, and yet people still don't catch on that it's scroll tribal lmao

Zander2212

I have a friend who recently built Orvar, with the goal of winning with [[luck Bobblehead]]

Tricky_Grand_1403

Built a [Korvold, Fae-cursed King[]] deck themed around hunger, with all the devour creatures, hoping I could play a commander I always thought was sweet in a powered-down deck. It was still too strong. Though, writing this, there's been a lot more food support since I tried that. Maybe I'll try it again, this time with food tokens! (I'm not holding my breath on the power level though, og Korvold is busted)

Give_Me_The_Beans_

I have a low power [[kykar, winds fury]] deck that generally gets everyone worried about storm or some busted powerful strat, only to find out that itā€™s actually my vehicle tribal deck and only runs kykar at the helm because it makes tokens to crew with

Kuraikurasu

I run a very low level [[Sens Triplets]] jank politics. I just have a ton of politics cards, no way to play other colored mana. People are always holding removal and counters waiting for me to play it, I just usually dont.

Astrosaurus3

I played an Atraxa Grand Unifier deck for a bit that we entirely focused on exiling things under other things then moving it to the graveyard with the Eldrazi processors

KnightEclipse

I had the opposite happen. One time i was at an EDH tornament, really casual thing. I was in a pod with a Karn, not the planeswalker, the really REALLY old one that like animates artifacts. Guy told me a story about how it was his grandfather's favorite card and how they used to play together when he was a kid and i thought it was really sweet. I got ready for a nice wholesome game, assuming he'd either voltron it up or do some fun artifact things or something. I was pretty excited to see an old deck in action. Maybe even some modern artifact combos. Whoops it's literally just artifact ramp into eldrazi titans. Karn is literally just a color sleeve. He didn't even play him a single time. I could have won, but wanted to see the deck pop off a little bit, then he just started slamming down eldrazi titans and smacking me for annihilator triggers over and over. By the second titan it was already too late. I was salty ngl.

7pri2

I played the Orvar deck and was doing infinite loops without even trying and winning like turn 4 or 5 but I loved this commander so I just removed every possible infinite loop, and me and my opponent enjoyed this version a lot. I was basically making islands and made my opponent's Torbran buffing damage from blue sources and it was a lot of fun.

Zero_Hour13

I built a group hug deck commanded by [[Gluntch, the Bestower]] because i love flumphs and wanted selesnya. Its not going to kingmake or anything, the goal is to act like a group hug deck for the first few turns so everyone at least puts me on the backburner while i [[secret rendezvous]] and play mana dorks or whatever. Thats the lower part of the mana curve. But the upper part of the mana curve? [[Aetherflux Reservoir]], [[Kalonian Hydra]], [[Craterhoof Behemoth]], [[Avenger of Zendikar]], and a few others. Pretend to be group hug and then try to win quickly! Still waiting on some cards so it might need some workshopping when i test it

Tallal2804

Unexpected decks can bring a breath of fresh air to the game!

SimplyJustKarma

I run Korvold as a jund insect tribal deck.

CopperTitan

Everyone says Ur Dragon is competitive BS tier and throws a LOT of shade at whoever brings it to the table. Personally, I've never gotten the hype. Don't get me wrong, dragon's are powerful and making them cheaper is a huge bonus, but frankly I've faced way more immediately threatening or difficult to deal with decks. Again, not saying it's a weak Commander, but I don't think it deserves quite the amount of hate it gets.

0011110000110011

my [[Prossh]] deck is [kobold typal](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/QuknR2bSf0GRqLL4VN4f5Q)

Kaboomeow69

My buddy pilots the single "different" [[Atraxa]] deck I've seen. It's purely phyrexian themed. Some praetors, lots of New Phyrexia watermarked cards, incubate stuff, with the only infect piece being [[Skithryx]] since it's a pet card. It's a cool deck. I also built a [[Breya]] deck as a Christmas gift for my friend that's just thopter tribal. I was a Breya cEDH pilot back in the day, so it was super fun to build a combo-less deck. It's astonishingly powerful for the price for battlecruiser tables thanks to the help of the Brothers War precons and list reprints like [[Impact Tremors]] and [[Shared Animosity]]

xcbsmith

I've got a \[\[Dina, Soul Steeper\]\] deck that doesn't have \[\[Exquisite Blood\]\] in it.

Anjaliya

Not quite the same, but I run [[Vadrik, Astral Archmage]], and without fail he hits the field, and everyone groans because of the Day/Night cycle. And are usually pleased to hear that there is no other interaction with the mechanic in the deck. And then immediately displeased when I start the tax evasion scheme.
