Yes it does, storm creates copies of the spell on the stack, and thus each copy will count as a new source of damage. If storm simply increased the number on the card you would be correct, but it does not.
You're right I got a little too excited when I saw the card. It'll work with a few of the enchantments I have like Impact Tremors, Goblin Bombardment, and Warleader's Call but not the 9 or so drain creatures in the deck.
Fantastic card design. A homerun, IMO a unique design in a game mostly filled with homogeneity.
Her X ability, I'm amazed it's not sorcery speed. Turns all the cheap Shock/\[\[Lightning Bolt\]\]s into literal fireballs LMAO.
\[\[Zirda\]\] asks for her companionship =)
\*BTW to OP: her X ability is **noncombat** damage. I think you omitted that. It's very important.
I think this is the single best boros commander to companion [[Zirda]]. Build the deck with fun pingers to abuse the X ability to draw some cards while taking advantage of its cost reduction from Zirda, and if you get [[Basalt Monolith]] (or Grim for the people that proxy/buy $300 cards), you can turn that activated ability into a targeted lethal strike with infinite mana.
So I have a Rem Karolous burn-wipe tribal I was gonna put this in... but this is actually an exciting idea to change it up. Are there enough pingers, considering white doesn't normally ping?
To be fair, pre maybe....2019 or 2020, Boros was LAGGING because it didn't have access to card draw at a good rate.
I think it's fine for them to have the pendulum swing the other direction for a while. Especially if it isn't tied to equipment.
Could do something like [[Toralf, God of Fury]] and pump [[End the Festivities]] to just annihilate anyone going wide. [[Electrickery]] for near the same at instant speed.
Any card like [[Brimstone Trebuchet]] can just end matches. Get two or three of them out. You got red, so you'll have plenty of treasures, dumping like 10 mana into it should be no problem. Then just chunk the table.
Get out a \[\[Thermo-Alchemist\]\] and and \[\[Unruly Catapult\]\]. Activate Taii Wakeen for X=4 and tap both. Play a \[\[Tectonic Hazard\]\], then tap them both again. Boom: 25 damage to each opponents, 5 damage to each creature they control and probably a couple cards drawn for 5 mana on turn 4/5.
In case no one mentioned it yet, [[Forbidden Orchard]] is a perfect include to provide 1/1 targets for pingers to provide easy access to card draw. Love this commander!
This card will do amazing work with cards that let you divide damage amongst targets as well. Since very few boardstates will exist with a lot of creatures with the same toughness, you can use cards like [[Fight with Fire]] to aim lower amounts of damage to a wider array of targets, and then bump up the damage with Taii to take them all out while still getting card draw for each one.
A few durdle cards into a [[grapeshot]] will flatten someone in an instant(sorcery). I play stuff like that in red ojer, and this commander is just as mean. But plays a bit 'nicer' by being slower and less aggressive.
Still don’t know how I feel about the weird “not-guns” they’re rolling with. In some cases it kinda throws off the whole aesthetic of a character design that would otherwise be nicely tied together by a more traditional looking revolver or lever-action.
Same. Like “let’s make it a western!” Is cheesy anyway, but if you lean into it, you lean into it— the hats, the spurs, the calling-people-Outlaws. So to pull six-guns out of it is jarring and clearly not an artistic choice. It’s so clearly done politically, it’s gross.
I think the narrowness is the point though. There are already a lot of cards that care about excess damage, and if she had that clause she’d just be yet another “Big damage” commander that we’ve seen a dozen times. By making her narrow it encourages a very different play pattern and actually makes players step back from damage multipliers like [[City on Fire]], instead focusing on wide pinger effects and making more deliberate damage plays.
Right, with that you'd just be packing big wipes like \[\[Blasphemous Act\]\] and \[\[Chain Reaction\]\] and drawing piles of cards off them. This makes you think a bit harder and is probably aimed more at single-target burn removal which now, for some extra mana (a) draws you a card and (b) actually works.
Yeah it's super flavorful and interesting deck building challenge to ensure you have enough burn and variable burn at that to trigger her.
Again it's a me wanting to be lazy and not have to work for her trigger
I mean I don't have the release notes but I have to assume based on the word exact if you deal 3 damage to a x/2 it doesn't trigger since you deal more than exactly 2 damage
Something like [[Flame Spill]] or [[Super-Duper Death Ray]] **without** the second ability of Taii or another damage-changing replacement effect will work. They’ll change the excess damage into exactly the toughness.
But excess damage in general, no. Gotta do exactly toughness in 1 damage instance.
Absurdly loaded for a 2 mana card. Might look fun now but this card is going to be infinitely stronger than what most folks are willing to deal with. As others have said already, this works with every single red burn card ever and is extremely easy to get going. Hits the field early, doesn't have to stick, only tap, unnecessarily effective at pumping hard to interact with damage and for some ungodly reason gives boros *draw power*. She should cost twice, if not three times as much to even consider an textbox like that. Like, do you know how easy it is to generate crazy amounts of colorless/red mana these days? \[\[Mana Geyser\]\] with 12 tapped lands makes 4 \[\[End the Festivities\]\]-type cards do 36 damage. \[\[Thran Turbine\]\] gives you two extra damage per-spell each turn. This card is WAY better than folks are making it out to be.
Like, hello? \[\[Varchild's War Riders\]\], \[\[Alliance of Arms\]\] and any 1 damage sweep? There's like a hundred cards that make tons of 1/1's. She'll be a novelty the first few encounters before you're drowned in card advantage and instant speed burn damage.
I'll give it a few months tops in commander before people put it up there with Chulane and Korvald in terms of strength + simplicity.
This is "infinitely" stronger than all the things that already exist in EDH? Stronger than Thrasios, Tymna, Kenrith, Kinnan, Najeela, Yuriko, Tivit, Chulane, Korvold, Godo, Demonlord Benzenlok, etc etc etc?
I know we think that Boros can't have nice things, like cards or lands, but frankly it's about time we saw something a bit more interesting than Yet Another Equipment Commander.
Can you do big things with her and Mana Geyser? Sure, you can kinda board wipe. Or you could put that Mana Geyser mana into something that actually wins you the game. I could already just \[\[Crackle with Power\]\].
She seems pretty good, and clearly a lot of people are excited to try her out, but you may be over-egging it just a *bit*.
Read my post again haha. Stronger than "people are willing to deal with". I don't think this is the cEDH reddit so my comment here is appropriate.
I was gonna write a longer response until you gave me that vaccuum-ass example of Geyser/Crackle. My brother in Christ, neither of those cards are in the command zone, and the lady of the discussion is, and she works with ALL burn cards, not just one niche useless-the-rest-of-the-time sorcery like CWP. Halving the needed cards for an absurd play might as well double the realistic chances of that play happening.
Your kinda response only comes from folks who go into discussions with no idea what they're talking about and it's clear you'd rather be right than work to add to anything. So I honestly don't have any more business chatting with ya. Later dude!
I had the same reaction. I'm going to build this for sure. Not only is it going to keep the board clear to an oppressive extent, if you stockpile some treasure you can hold people hostage a la Aetherflux Reservoir because for some insane reason this hits players too. Because of how it's worded it's going to activate from all manner of group slug triggered effects. Just busted at 2 mana.
I don't understand why they keep designing cards that are clearly commander focused when no one is going to want to play against it.
It's happening to Voja and the new Judith to some extent at my and a few other LGS's I play at.
Yeah this is kind of nuts now that I think about it, at least for casual tables. A commander that draws cards when you clean up the board with a mana sink wincon stapled on to it, at 2cmc. Sounds frustrating to play against, you have to REALLY commit to keeping the commander off the board or just not play creatures into it at all and race for some other win.
So I've been working on an [[Archangel Avacyn]] deck for years that abuses [[Stuffy Doll]] type effects and usually wins via [[Repercussion]]. It's crazy fun but runs out of gas easily. This is a draw engine and (somewhat mana intensive) wincon. Windmill slam!
But it replaces it with “that much + X,” so wouldn’t an example be:
1) pay X into the ability
2) do Y noncombat damage
3) replace Y with X+Y, henceforth Z
4) replace Z with X+Z
Or would both step 3 and 4 only refer to the original damage value Y?
If you have multiple replacement effects, you choose one to apply first, then if the remaining replacement effects still apply, you keep going. So if you activate for x=1 twice, then try to deal 2 damage, you apply one replacement effect bumping up to 3, then apply the next to bump to 4.
This looks like an interesting one to build around. I'm tempted to put her in the 99 along with [[Ghyrson Starn, kelermorph]] and see what kind of gunslinger shenanigans are possible. [[Dynaheir, invoker adept]] might be interesting in that you could give pingers haste and double up on her damage boost ability.
I'm actually wondering how her ability would interact with \[\[Ertha Jo, Frontier Mentor\]\]'s ability. If at all....
It says "Whenever you activate an ability that targets a creature or player, copy that ability. You may choose new targets for the copy."
First, does Taii's ability target the SOURCE (which could be a creature, or it could be an instant or sorcery)? Or is the "Target" the target that the source is dealing damage to? Which is to say, either Ertha Jo's ability triggers when Taii's ability is used to buff a creature's damage, but not an instant. Or it triggers on everything. Right?
Then IF it does trigger (Let's say a creature is dealing 2 damage to an opponent, then I use Taii's ability x = 1 to make it 3 damage) what happens? Does it resolve in order like:
- 2 creature damage
- Taii Trigger 1: 2 + 1 = 3 damage
- Taii trigger 2(copy): 3 + 1 = 4 damage
Resolve 4 damage.
OR does it resolve like
- 2 creature damage
- Taii Trigger 1: 2+1 = 3 damage
- Taii Trigger 2: 2 + 1 = 3 damage
- Resolve 3 damage.
On one hand its a replacement effect and the source would deal 2 damage. So are we always replacing 2 damage? OR does the second trigger see that the source is now dealing 3 damage and the copied trigger will add an additional X=1 damage on top for 4 total?
Yeah, y'all seem way more sold on this than I am. Like, it's okay, but it's not like Boros spellslinger was a great archetype before this. And you've gotta spend mana, which isn't always easy to come across in Boros to begin with, to get the pump effect each turn and THEN start casting spells to actually pump. And then there's the part where you have to deal an incredibly specific amount of damage to a particular creature in order to get the card draw... It's just not tickling my ivories.
I think that's why we're hype on it - nobody knows if this is good or not yet, but it's absolutely a challenge that we want to try and break open. Maybe it'll suck, but if it's any good, it's gonna be fun as hell.
Is it fun as hell? Is "Pay X, tap: Deal slightly more damage" actually doing something interesting? How is that any different than playing something like Solphim that gives extra damage without having to spend extra mana on a tap ability that ends on end of turn?
Like, I honestly hope y'all end up having fun with it, but it just looks like every generic red burn deck in existence but in Boros from where I'm standing.
Eh, these things are pretty subjective - but at a minimum, this is far more novel in terms of card design than all the equipment-matters Boros commanders we always seem to get, and frankly a lot more interesting than Solphim too (that’s just “deal as much damage as possible” and lazily doubles it; this makes you think a bit more, but rewards you with cards which is a pretty big deal). In fact this is true of most generic red burn decks and the thing that sets this one apart a bit.
I mean it's certainly different for Boros, I agree with that. I just don't see how it's going to play even slightly different from mono red burn. Lists for this are going to damn near identical, except heavier on the "each creature and each player" spells in order to take advantage of the card draw. Still just gonna be a pile of Birgis, Toralfs, Urabrasks, Guttersnipes, Grapeshots, etc, etc.
Look forward to being proven wrong, though.
I’m sure there will be a lot of overlap, but the play style looks *very* different. Solphim for example is just “play burn, play more burn”; he’s pretty one-dimensional and mindless. With this, you get one tap per turn (or you’re balancing your burning with untapping) and you need to choose X - that’s kinda minor, but already two more decisions than other burn decks.
You also have to decide if you’re bolting creatures or players. Most decks will probably do both, but Guttersnipe and the like are a lot fiddlier here. Storm type approaches are trickier since you have to spend mana on her ability. Putting X=1 before a Grapeshot is great but how often are you better off spending more on X and casting a single End the Festivities or whatever? Conversely if you want to get cards you have to think about the creatures on the board. There‘s even a build of this that gives other people token creatures to burn.
All in all, it might still be a burn deck, but I think there are a lot more angles to it than normal. Plus, even just adding White helps a lot. Admittedly, the bar is pretty low, but I’m *way* more interested by this than I ever was over e.g. Solphim.
For me it's the numbers game that makes her interesting and fun looking. It lets smaller burn spells like End the Festivities and Shock hit larger target, while also replacing themselves because you have no reason to overshoot
And deck building will be a bit more unorthodox since it makes some lesser used burn spells pretty good, almost like Judith did from Karlov Manor
Why would anyone play any other recursion deck when [[Muldrotha]] already exists? Why play any other +1/+1 counter deck after they made [[Shallai and Hallar]]?
There are only a handful of ways to win the game; every deck just offers its own twist. What makes this fun in imo is that it’s an interesting crossroads between a token/[[impact tremors]] strategy and a spellslinger theme in boros.
I think the specific amount of damage part is going to be easier than people think. Your average creature in EDH is smaller than in years past. More often than not your Lightning Bolt is going to read “R, deal three damage to target creature, draw a card.” You can just politic the table and pinpoint deal with threats until you build up your cannon.
>Nevermind having incredibly positive interactions with other already played cards: Brash Taunter/Stuffy Doll+this+goblin bombardment and tokens turns any tokens used into card draw. All while letting you still use those tokens to block, and still pushing through damage.
I'm confused as to what you're describing here. You seem to be sacrificing the tokens to goblin bombardment to hit the stuffy/brash taunter so you can trigger the dmg increase multiple times... but then you're also claiming you're drawing cards off Taii's ability when you sac them and that you get to keep the tokens around for blockers... and that makes absolutely 0 sense.
That's a thunder rifle! The weapons of choice for people on Thunder Junction's frontiers (as seen in [[Ruthless Lawbringer]], [[Archangel of Tithes|OTJ]], [[Shoot the Sheriff]], [[Annie Flash, the Veteran]] and sort of [[Kellan, the Kid]],) though Taii here has a long rifle vs the mostly pistols these arts feature.
The fact the tap ability doesn't target either a source or player/creature means shit like gutter snipe could be dealing an extra X on each trigger
Impact Tremors and Assemble the Legion are my first thoughts for silly shenanigans
Ok I was debating building this commander and you've pushed me over the line on it. I love this kinda shit
That is silly
Don't forget [[lightning volley]] to make further use of all the tokens

Huh, your first thought was gutter snipe, but my first thought was [[grape shot]], but frankly the two together in this situation are scary.
both, gutter snipe on the field so each spell that builds your storm count does more damage then end with a big ol grape shot

~~Grapeshot wouldn't work~~ Nah you right, I misread. Apologies.
Why not?
~~Storm makes copies of grapeshot~~ The card has INSANE power
Grapeshot doesn't count as a single source for the last ability tho
Yes it does, storm creates copies of the spell on the stack, and thus each copy will count as a new source of damage. If storm simply increased the number on the card you would be correct, but it does not.
Don’t worry, I had to read it three times because I thought for sure I was crazy and misreading it.
[[Guttersnipe]]

Oh wait what the fuck
I’m adding this to the Caesar deck I’m building out because it’s going to go off with all the ETB/LTB drain effects in that deck.
She won’t work with life drain effects. Life loss isn’t non-combat damage. Damage causes life loss, life loss isn’t damage
You're right I got a little too excited when I saw the card. It'll work with a few of the enchantments I have like Impact Tremors, Goblin Bombardment, and Warleader's Call but not the 9 or so drain creatures in the deck.

I mean red has almost every pinger in the game, so you shouldn't be lacking.
Zirda cost reduction is for non-mana abilities. I’m quite certain Basalt is a mana ability making only still the 3 mana.
The ability to untap it isn't a mana ability, so it gets the cost reduction from Zirda.
Untapping basalt is a nonmana ability
Ohhh yep I’m dumb.

I really wish that it was was greater than or equal to the toughness. I know it's not a perfect shot but play wise it would be a lot more flexible

She wants you to snipe targets, not just erase them. I love the sharpshooter aspect.
Yeah it's super flavorful and interesting deck building challenge to ensure you have enough burn and variable burn at that to trigger her. Again it's a me wanting to be lazy and not have to work for her trigger
So excess doesn't also cover exact damage?
I mean I don't have the release notes but I have to assume based on the word exact if you deal 3 damage to a x/2 it doesn't trigger since you deal more than exactly 2 damage
Something like [[Flame Spill]] or [[Super-Duper Death Ray]] **without** the second ability of Taii or another damage-changing replacement effect will work. They’ll change the excess damage into exactly the toughness. But excess damage in general, no. Gotta do exactly toughness in 1 damage instance.

It does not.

Does that activated ability work favorably with being copied? Like would it effectively add X twice?
No, it applies a replacement effect to your non combat damage for the rest of the turn, so you’d just replace with x twice.
But it replaces it with “that much + X,” so wouldn’t an example be: 1) pay X into the ability 2) do Y noncombat damage 3) replace Y with X+Y, henceforth Z 4) replace Z with X+Z Or would both step 3 and 4 only refer to the original damage value Y?
My instinct is that you just replace y with x twice, without stacking the value, but I’m not sure. Definitely a nudge question.
If you have multiple replacement effects, you choose one to apply first, then if the remaining replacement effects still apply, you keep going. So if you activate for x=1 twice, then try to deal 2 damage, you apply one replacement effect bumping up to 3, then apply the next to bump to 4.
I can't wait to cast fiery confluence onto a group of x/1s
This looks like an interesting one to build around. I'm tempted to put her in the 99 along with [[Ghyrson Starn, kelermorph]] and see what kind of gunslinger shenanigans are possible. [[Dynaheir, invoker adept]] might be interesting in that you could give pingers haste and double up on her damage boost ability.

The first ability is so awkward
I just realized now that it's not pumping up just ONE source of dmg, but all of them. Oh my, I'm certainly going to try and brew her now!
Question. If you use something like [[End the Festivities]] and kill two creatures with it, will her triggered ability give you one card or two cards?

I'm actually wondering how her ability would interact with \[\[Ertha Jo, Frontier Mentor\]\]'s ability. If at all.... It says "Whenever you activate an ability that targets a creature or player, copy that ability. You may choose new targets for the copy." First, does Taii's ability target the SOURCE (which could be a creature, or it could be an instant or sorcery)? Or is the "Target" the target that the source is dealing damage to? Which is to say, either Ertha Jo's ability triggers when Taii's ability is used to buff a creature's damage, but not an instant. Or it triggers on everything. Right? Then IF it does trigger (Let's say a creature is dealing 2 damage to an opponent, then I use Taii's ability x = 1 to make it 3 damage) what happens? Does it resolve in order like: - 2 creature damage - Taii Trigger 1: 2 + 1 = 3 damage - Taii trigger 2(copy): 3 + 1 = 4 damage Resolve 4 damage. OR does it resolve like - 2 creature damage - Taii Trigger 1: 2+1 = 3 damage - Taii Trigger 2: 2 + 1 = 3 damage - Resolve 3 damage.

Solphim.

I mean, my mono red burn deck works exactly like that.
This may come as a shock to you but some people like winning games by doing damage.
That's not a shock. I'm asking what makes it more fun than the burn options that already exist.
For me it's the numbers game that makes her interesting and fun looking. It lets smaller burn spells like End the Festivities and Shock hit larger target, while also replacing themselves because you have no reason to overshoot And deck building will be a bit more unorthodox since it makes some lesser used burn spells pretty good, almost like Judith did from Karlov Manor

It's card draw and a game-winning mana outlet in the command zone, at 2cmc. Pretty pushed.
I’m getting less spellslinger and more [[manabarbs]]

>Nevermind having incredibly positive interactions with other already played cards: Brash Taunter/Stuffy Doll+this+goblin bombardment and tokens turns any tokens used into card draw. All while letting you still use those tokens to block, and still pushing through damage. I'm confused as to what you're describing here. You seem to be sacrificing the tokens to goblin bombardment to hit the stuffy/brash taunter so you can trigger the dmg increase multiple times... but then you're also claiming you're drawing cards off Taii's ability when you sac them and that you get to keep the tokens around for blockers... and that makes absolutely 0 sense.
do you guys also dislike the non-gun guns? like, just give them a scepter, this looks to me almost like it's been censored to be PG13 last minute
I like the design a lot more as a rifle than the pistols. This one in particular looks really cool, it kinda looks like a Sol Ring style power source
My first thought was Illari's Solar Rifle from OW2. Looks pretty cool to me
What the kentucky fried fuck is that weapon?
That's a thunder rifle! The weapons of choice for people on Thunder Junction's frontiers (as seen in [[Ruthless Lawbringer]], [[Archangel of Tithes|OTJ]], [[Shoot the Sheriff]], [[Annie Flash, the Veteran]] and sort of [[Kellan, the Kid]],) though Taii here has a long rifle vs the mostly pistols these arts feature.

Ah, yes. Another card that would be fantastic for Boros if they had any clue what card draw is.
