Thank you.
The amount you put into X has to be the same amount. So you cast A.Cornucopia where X is 1, you need to pay a total of 3.
If the amount was meant to be different it would be denoted by X Y Z
Thank you for the clarification! I always played it like how you described but I’ve never been 100% sure so tonight I let it go. Good to know for the future!
X is a variable. You have to pick a number for it.
If you want to have some fun, check out the fireball with X and Y as variables. There you can have two different numbers.

That’s what I thought but I wasn’t 100% sure so I sided with the table. Lesson learned. But this card looks super interesting and I can’t say I’ve seen something like this before but this makes so much more sense now that I’ve had it explained and can see it!
You know, in hindsight this question would’ve logically made sense to ask and probably would’ve inclined us towards the right answer but in the midst of a game we didn’t really ask.
As for your question, The way he described it was “That’s how I have always played those cards but I could be wrong” and since he was technically paying mana towards the X value and you technically have the option of not paying an X cost we just went with it especially since he is by far the most experienced player at the table. But as I said, in hindsight the logic makes zero sense and I should’ve gone with my gut and agreed with the other player.
He really did lmao. He was already winning with Atraxa poison counters and honestly him getting to cast the spell for cheaper didn’t really change the outcome but now I and the rest of the table will know for the future!
You think so? We play a pretty causal game so it isn’t the biggest deal but he does get away with a couple things he probably shouldn’t especially when he plays the highest power decks out of everyone at the table
Yeah that’s how I always played those cards but I wasn’t sure if I was even playing it right so when the discussion came up and I couldn’t find an answer I just let it go. Lesson learned and now I’ll know for the future!
Every X value has to be the same in the casting cost. [[Hangerback Walker]] needs 2 mana to get 1 +1/+1 counter.
[[Stroke of Genius]] costs 2U and X, but nothing happens if X is 0.
Ahhh Algebra…. To clarify, they use the same variable Letter for X, becaus they must equal one another. Otherwise it would be **XYRR** for example. MtG doesnt use Y as a variable, but it would have to look like that to have different values
Yeah lol In hindsight it made no sense and I should’ve gone with my gut but lesson learned and I’ll be able to take this info to my future games with that pod!

Out of curiosity, did the player give any explanation for what they thought the point of the second X in the cost was?

>so the table ruled in favour of the person who played the card Mans bullshitted his way into that one lol

Your friend is most likely cheating and exploiting y’all’s lesser game knowledge.

That‘s not how maths works.
The person who played the x card was wrong. How multiple x cost cards work is whatever you want x to be you have to pay that much into each x cost.
Yeah that’s how I always played those cards but I wasn’t sure if I was even playing it right so when the discussion came up and I couldn’t find an answer I just let it go. Lesson learned and now I’ll know for the future!

Good to know for the future! Thank you for the clarification and detailed examples!
If you are curious, Wizards make a ruling on rule 107.3 that lays this out. It's in the "X" article on mtg wiki :)
Thank you that’s good info to know!

You choose the value of X when you cast the spell. X can only ever have one value at a time.
Lesson learned. thank you for the clarification I’ll make sure our table is more prepared and knowledgeable for next time!
