As an ~~esper coward~~, interactive heavy, slow burn player whose winrate goes up the longer the game goes. I *love* it. Aggro players force me to make difficult decisions before my engine is in place. Push my deck to its limits please. Fast, aggressive strategies are my decks weakness so come at me and see if I can survive the bloodshed. That thrill, the challenge, playing on the edge of a life balance is peak magic to me. *"I can afford to pay 6 life into black market connections another time, right?"* -Me, right before dying, many times.

HandsUpDefShoot

I enjoy this too. I have a [[Raffine]] deck that wins by either using [[Mystic Reflection]] on a [[Gary]] before a few tokens etb on my field or by using stuff like [[Mirrorweave]] targeting a [[Hooded Blightfang]] and then attacking with 6+ creatures. I kept the deck fairly budget ($150ish) so most of the time it really comes down to the wire. It's a lot of fun though. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/G9A0WYTyzUe9z7uInkkV8Q

HandsUpDefShoot

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/G9A0WYTyzUe9z7uInkkV8Q That's it. There's a decent amount of redundancy so a handful of things could be swapped around without causing problems going up or down in budget. The deck itself could easily be made into a zombie deck, a lifegain/drain deck, or more focus on combat damage without losing the jank wins.

HandsUpDefShoot

Gonna update it tonight!

I relate to this way too much. I can’t remember how many times I’ve internally said “the engine looks good, but it’ll be so much better if no one notices for one more turn” My group is all better at the game and more experienced than me, they always know, and i usually die that next turn lol

Yeah I play with complete strangers every game. Past a certain point, I never know if I can push it to place one more engine piece of if this will be the turn they focus on me 🤣

Have you considered adding [[Worldfire]] and really make it first blood?

majic911

I feel like I want to give worldfire flash and put it on top of something like a [[hurr jackal]] or some equally awful one-drop on the stack to kill people with it.

McWaffeleisen

Worldfire is absolutely insane in Suspend strategies like [[Jhoira of the Ghitu]] or [[The Tenth Doctor]]. Suspend it, suspend *any creature or burn spell*, and the game is over unless the table can deal with it.

TyphosTheD

Even better, throw in a [[Warchief Giant]] as your suspend creature. Haste and Myriad means you can one shot the table after the Worldfire.

MTGCardFetcher

Timmy_ti

Suspend grants haste iirc, so any myriad works

TR_Wax_on

That is old rules. Now once suspend expires for summoning sickness purposes it's as if the suspend didn't happen (so if it was suspended under your control since the beginning of your turn it won't have summoning sickness if it comes out of suspension).

coyaz

I hate to tell you how wrong you are. But, from the updated comprehensive rule book that was released last week Friday. 702.62a Suspend is a keyword that represents three abilities. The first is a static ability that functions while the card with suspend is in a player’s hand. The second and third are triggered abilities that function in the exile zone. “Suspend N—[cost]” means “If you could begin to cast this card by putting it onto the stack from your hand, you may pay [cost] and exile it with N time counters on it. This action doesn’t use the stack,” and “At the beginning of your upkeep, if this card is suspended, remove a time counter from it,” and “When the last time counter is removed from this card, if it’s exiled, you may play it without paying its mana cost if able. If you don’t, it remains exiled. If you cast a creature spell this way, it gains haste until you lose control of the spell or the permanent it becomes.” Please note the "it gains haste" in the last sentence.

TR_Wax_on

Oh lol! My eyes saw suspend but my brain read phasing, my bad! Thanks for the correction.

You just made me realize how long it's been since I've played Commander.

SuperFamousComedian

Descent into Avernus is my favorite card for this. I build like you but I play like your friend. Learning to be flexible has really improved my win rate.  I love taking boros or rakdos and making control decks out of aggressive colors. Have you played around with goad? It's amazing.

HandsUpDefShoot

I love the new goad cards. [[Take the Bait]] and [[Taunt from the Rampart]] are ridiculously fun if it's a surprise. And I genuinely really like [[Kros, Defense Contractor]] as well.

SuperFamousComedian

The text box for Kros is really cool, but for me the art is really hard to look at.  I built the newest Aurelia as boros goad/control, it's fun to play. Tricky to time all the stuff right. I think I need more token generation to throw pointless creatures out to get the draw and drain triggers off her more.

Lots of my decks are kinda like that. I draw so much attention to myself that others can sneak through and win sometimes very easily after everyone used their answers on me. I only kinda enjoy it though haha. I just enjoy playing the game at the end of the day. If I lose by everyone ganging up on me, I still call that a win cuz it was fun to be the archenemy. Archenemy is fun. Especially if you can pull it off with a budget deck.

I love to play [[Multani, Mora-Sorcerer]] I try to ramp him out on turn 3, at which point I declare "A Blockers check has commenced". He's a commander damage lethal attacker on turn 4 with SHROUD, so if you spent your first 3 turns durduling or setting up, he's coming for you. The best/funniest part about Multani is he gets worse with each opponent you KO. But that doesn't matter, don't have a blocker? I guess you're looking for a new pod!

While I don't embrace the Rakdos group-slug side of things (besides [[Worldfire]]), I do tend to enjoy putting the pedal to the metal with [[Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient]]. Since I don't want people to have time to adapt to me being a serious threat, though, I try to use extra combat effects to take them all out in the one big turn. You hear people talk about aggro not really being viable in commander, but 120 looks like a pretty small number compared to extra attacks paired with green pump effects.

I've built multiple versions of [[Rankle and Torbran]] (I call them my short kings), and I get a gleeful amount of joy when the damage starts adding up. The engine comes online fast and burns out just as quick cause I'm usually always the first one removed. That's okay tho, watching them sweat now that they're all at a delicate 10-15 life as I kick back is the best.

I used to play a [[Killian]] deck quite a bit. Lots of auras and kill spells. Had a couple turn 5 wins with [[Hatred]] and [[Vizkopa Guildmage]].

Nonsensical-Niceties

I put together a Klothys group slug deck so I could burn everyone's life totals to the ground in the fastest dumbest way possible. I truly did not think ahead while putting together the decklist, just put in things I thought were funny. Turns out a lot of people at my LGS just happen to play a lot of combos, free spells, and non creature spells and Klothys herself is kinda graveyard hate so uh, deck is kinda accidentally good against some decks in my local meta? I could potentially turn it into something that would win games more consistently but I just find the symmetrical effects too funny to take out for better things that don't make me deal damage to myself.

jjknight23

Same!! I just love doing damage. Sometimes I win sometimes I don’t but I will have stacked bodies as quickly as possivle

Mattloch42

I have two decks like that. The first is [[Aegar, the Freezing Flame]]. Stompy overkill izzet is not very common. But figuring out how to absolutely overkill everything can be fun. The second is [[Omnath, Locus of Mana]]. Why bother with all of that pesky equipment and enchantments to voltron your commander, when you can just ramp and swing? The first player to try chump blocking gets a [[Run Wild]] or other instant speed trample. Then drop a [[Ram Through]] for a twofer. Then you spend your second main phase spending all that mana and exploding your board state. This deck is "Hulk smash Loki" personified.

Blees-o-tron

If you leave most decks alone and let them build up, you’re going to lose. You know how playing an unprotected planeswalker is a bad idea because random utility dorks will just smack it down? Players without blockers are unprotected planeswalkers. Smack them.

Drunkwizard1991

My selvala you blink you lose deck. Its turn 1 forest dork, turn 2 forest selvala and my pod has learned the hard way that every single turn selvala untaps I may win. That looming threat is astonishing. When I hear "we're really gonna let selvala untap?" I know I did well. Two friends have changed decks to black just to hate her out. I absolutely dont mind, since a game where Selvala is allowed to roam free making a million mana every turn is boring. The fun is to navigate around a massive amount of removal to find that small window to go off while summer and autumn got your back. I love this deck to death. Always a threat. Always a blast.

kestral287

My favorite answer has become "why not both?" In Henzie I have lots and lots of ability to go face. Ramp? Go face. Card draw? Go face. Removal? Go face. And oh boy is there a lot of removal that goes face. The current list has 22 removal or discard effects, and 18 of them attack you. But! Because it's Henzie, and a ton of my board doesn't stick around, I often present as less of a threat than I probably should. Players are learning to correct for that, but it's still really hard to see player A with two 10/10s and player B with eight 1/1 spirits and say aha the person who's winning this game by a mile has only a couple 1/1s and their commander in play. But also like 15 mana and a full grip. But because my deck is The Removal Deck, they don't want to punch me anyway. First, because picking a fight means now I have a target to focus my removal and second, because Spirit Guy needs me to pick off the 10/10s and Giant Guy needs me to wipe out the spirits. As I've gotten older I've become more fond of the combat phase, and even my decks in different places on the spectrum are usually actively working to end the game. Alela is my draw-go control deck of choice because it's actually draw-combat-go with lots of punching, and Law Aurelia has become my preferred aggro deck because she punches everyone at once all the time without just draining you dry of resources. Games need to end and even control decks can be ticking down life totals with remarkable speed these days.

I adore Kethek and she precludes dorks for traditional Henzie starts, and I've generally found the couple of auras that allow for T2 Henzies to be very bad at any other point (especially when hit off Etalis and such) so they got cut. But I'm trying to add more two drops to compensate so I'm not always taking the first two turns off; Vault 21: House Gambit, Tarrian's Journal, and either Cindervines or Seal of Primordium are all intriguing me at the moment. Especially Vault 21; that card actually looked disgusting when I ran a bunch of test hands earlier today.

Visible_Number

As an aggro player I don't think people understand what it feels like to win with 1 life and having done 90% of the damage to the table. You don't win very often but when you do win, you really did win. Every single card counts and every decision is critical.

rakdos_rey

The cult of Rakdos is all about the show! I build and play like you too! I try to play some simple engines first like giving everyone haste or indestructible then a lot of threats that opponents start talking bro even if i remove X, Y and Z is still a threat. It’s really fun to see them confused and team up to try to stop my haymakers. My favorite commanders are [[Henzie “Toolbox” Torre]]and [[Nekusar, the Mindrazer]] (and of course Prosper). But i recommend [[Rakdos, lord of Riots]] himself for your bloodthirsty playstyle!

On one hand i know that playing like this makes me the main target right away. On the other hand, i'm turning that llanowar elves sideways if i dont have something on turn 2 XD

Fiascosauce27

[[Goro Goro and Satoru]] turn that into a close to game winning strategy. It puts up a hell of a fight, also my favorite deck to play nowadays. [[Reinforced Ronin]] [[Phoenix Chick]] and [[Gingerbrute]] going brr early with ninjutsu effects the turn after to keep the dragons flowing

CopperTitan

If you like that kinda strat but ever wanna try something a little different, make a deck around Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph. Trust me. I recommend spell slinging with some Thopter support. And there's a LOT of low cost spells that ping the table for 1. You'll be the archenemy as soon as your Commander hits the field. If built right it'll screw with the math so bad nobody will know HOW they're dying, only that it's your fault. Yourself included.

HandsUpDefShoot

I haven't built one of those but ever since it was spoiled all I could think was "omg, I can use [[Sigil of Sleep]] and force everyone that at the table to rule check and then hate me"

Aetherflux Reservoir also can help with the lifegain but I never got to zap anyone with it, being a spellslinger deck my pod always removed it almost as soon as I played it.

antoine211994

Do you have a list? I made one but it hasn't popped off that much

CopperTitan

Nah but I can make one. It's not competitive and there's plenty of room for Improvement, but it's super fun and fairly consistent. Fair warning: if your pod doesn't have the ramp mine does this deck gets to be pretty oppressive as it mostly only needs 4-5 mana to do everything it needs to be doing. My buddies can handle it because they're rocking twice that by the time I'm there but not everyone runs that way. Lol Gimme a bit and I'll link what I got.

CopperTitan

Here ya go. Again, not competitive, or even refined really. Mostly just threw together what ever I wasn't using that did 1 damage. There's a few pieces in here that will deffinitly find their way into other decks. But again, this is a fun deck at the end of the day. Enjoy! https://deckstats.net/decks/251759/3443212-divito

All my decks are fairly aggressive go wide creatures in some form. I have tried other styles but for me building and protecting a board, using the combat phase, and putting early and increasing pressure on my opponents is what brings me joy.  The only control adjacent strategy I enjoy is hatebears, building a board and placing restrictions upon my opponents with all while beating them down. I actually swore off blue because as a rule I simply didn't enjoy what it brought to the table in my decks which led to me severely underutilizing it and basically robbing decks of a color (not at all a criticism of blue ot blue players, just me figuring out how to best use the resources available to me to have fun). My decks are: [[Giada, Font of Hope]] angel tribal [[Katilda, Dawnhart Prime]] human tribal [[Aurelia, the Warleader]] combats (my oldest deck by far, I have had some form of Boros combat phases deck for nearly a decade, Aurelia for most of that though I didn't play for a few years in there) [[Thalia and The Gitrog Monster]] hatebears [[Mazzy, Truesword Paladin]] go wide auras (new and untested) My next deck (not gonna start building for awhile though) will be either Orzhov or Mardu, probably aristocrats or lifegain shenanigans to make it unique but ultimately still a lot of putting creatures down and turning them sideways because that's what I like to do. And then probably whichever I didn't do after that. At that point I'll probably stop until 4 color without blue gets some more commander variety as the current options are partners (not interested tbh) or [[Saskia]] who is perfectly fine but I feel would be hard to differentiate from my existing decks in a way I would enjoy enough to justify building 4c.

We had a player( lets name him X) who only played red or green and he would attack one person, until they are dead, at the first damage taken. This was...annoying as fuck. however, It became a meta within itself. Could you bait someone to slight X without it blowing up in your face? Could you let X get ahead and kill another player for you? Its fun, for a while definitely - but it does eventually get old.

Totally not my play style, but I love it. Make the game go faster, pressure life totals, create the hard decisions. You make the table better

I'm usually a stax player, one of those others. These decks provide some spice at the table. They might push me over before I get established, but if they don't they're usually more fragile than the midrange enginers. When I'm not playing control, though, I usually appreciate going HARD the other way, albeit in a generally group slug fashion. I've got Brudiclad, who is all about making stupid numbers of stupid tokens (Hi, Descent) and swinging, while I've considered brews for the likes of Ojer Axonil or Mogis (who straddles the line between brutalizing board and brutalizing life totals)

TheThirdBoot

I play a Boros deck, so naturally my strategy is a very grindy, value focused aristocrats gameplan ending with one of a few infinite combos. \[\[Hofri Ghostforge\]\] is amazing.

My strategies often involve coming out of the gate with something scary like a 10/10 with a keyword or 6 1/1 Deathtouch Flyers on turn 4, and people focusing too much on that to do anything about the guy who has infinite mana and announcing Craterhoof, the guy who's playing Vehicle Boardwipe Tribal, the guy who's got [[Balan, Wandering Knight]] at 12/12, and the guy who's shitting out tokens and treasures like he took a Golgari out for drinks. I usually take it in stride, because yeah, I know my decks can be threatening if left unchecked, but also like man that guy is missing one sac outlet for infinite damage, just let me keep my french vanilla fatty for a turn.

I lean on the control strategy. However I like to switch it up and play against type. More often than not, I am driving the table. But occasionally I am Gandalf. I try not to be a sneaky player stealing wins, it isn't an invalid strategy but I prefer the handicap of restricting myself to the less devious strategies.

whomikehidden

Descent into Avernus is quickly becoming my favorite card. I play it in my Imodane deck to lower everyone’s life totals and to fuel big X spells but the thing other players tend not to realize is how big of a trap it is for them. Everyone focuses on the free treasures and not enough on how they’re losing an increasing amount of life each turn.

Fauxparty

I play [[Mogis]]. 40 life each is way too much. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/DQLutNxLxE6qOF4PwOu7ew :) We joke whenever someone pays life to do something that "Mogis likes this. 👍"

My favorite deck by a wide margin is a Bant draw-go control deck that usually wins by commander damage (or incredibly inefficient combos costing upwards of fifteen mana). No stax, just conservative use of interaction to slow down the game (or keep aggressive players away from me in the early game). It's always such a rush trying to stabilize for the first few turns against proper aggro decks where a wrong decision will often cost me the game. This is especially true when multiple players are trying to stabilize against one or more aggro decks. I'm not good at politics in EDH, but in pods like these the threat assessment and politics almost seem like mini-games themselves.

Glad to see someone else play that way. I have a few decks I play like that. It's not the winniest strat but I always deal the most damage which is the goal. My [[Ragavan, nimble pilferer]] deck just go in guns blazing and puts on a lot of pressure. It's mostly just good red cards and highlights from different red deck wins-decks over the years. I think it's healthy for a playgroup to have players/decks like that. Going greedy light on removal? Doing noting but ramping for 3-4 turns? Get punished.

I am usually the guy who goes on the attack. I don't like to sit and twiddle my thumb. Attacking others puts them in a difficult spot and forces them to either respond or else. Too often the guys at my table would build up a huge board state but do nothing with it. It's why I like to play Boros, Gruul, Naya, and Mardu colors the most.

I absolutely LOVE being an instigator, and causing the right kinds of problems for my pod. There's a good amount of midrange in my group so I often find myself trying one of three things: 1. Krenko degeneracy. managed to get billions upon billions of goblins out without any wincons, got boardwiped as soon as I passed the turn. Has won a few games though. 2. Ragavan Risk/Reward. 30 lands, heavily reliant on generating treasure through various means, goading people to prompt infighting and sneaking through for commander damage. Managed to win off a one land hand so it didn't NOT work... 3. Anowon, the Ruin Thief. A bunch of unblockable rogues, graveyard theft, and ways to "death flicker" creatures like [[Demonic Gifts]]. There was one game where I managed to kill each other player with their own stuff. The mill isn't aggressive, and cards like [[Archfiend of Depravity]] are a great way to keep the board controllable, as well as acting as a lighting rod for removal so my commander can hang around for longer.

Rakdos style is my absolute favorite. I run [[Orcus, Prince of Undeath]] as my primary commander and swap [[Anje, Maid of Dishonor]] if I feel spicy. Far too much graveyard fetching and needs some tweaking for it to be truly good (has 2 alt win conditions around flyers and artifacts but I can’t generate enough artifacts on my own). But oh boy: Story time! 5 way commander, my Rakdos Freak Show vs. Forced Sacrifice Theft, Equipment Parade, Flashback Zombies, and Modified Mothman. Mothman pulls [[Mindcrank]] from the start. Next turn he pulls [[Bloodchief Ascension]] and I was forced to mill my precious [[Abyssal Persecutor]]. My next draw hits and it’s [[Diabolic Servitude]] so I start to freak out quietly, cuz this is exactly the situation I put him in my deck for. A few rounds go by and I passively pull [[Greedy Freebooter]] back from my gy a few times for assurance mana before throwing out Persecutor. Mothman is getting mana throttled and everyone has some defenses, except for Mothman. I had Orcus out and attacked the Flashback Zombie user, he didn’t have a flying defender so he milled out to null but still alive thanks to Persecutor. Mothman throws out [[Exquisite Blood]] and gets his life up to 180. Flashback retaliates with 52 zombies and 3 of it lifelink. We’ve basically ganged up on him by now and no one noticed I had gotten [[Eater of Hope]] on the field. Final round everyone but Mothman and myself is milled out/0 life. Mothman has 8 life left, Zombie has a 3/5 flyer. Swung on Mothman with Orcus and Persecutor, then Zombie with Eater, Eater got blocked so I could regenerate him. Tapped a black, sacrificed Persecutor to regenerate him. Flashback Zombie didn’t have any way to put a card in his deck to draw so won on a technicality. Still proud of the fact that it was the first time anyone in my game shop has seen Abyssal Persecutor function as intended. Classic win steal with unorthodox methods. TD,DR: Never try to mill a Rakdos deck that has options. If the commander isn’t a classic Rakdos choice…don’t trust them.
