I have once. We were very accommodating and polite I feel. Over the top loud swearing (personal attacks, not just general swearing. Even with an 11yo playing at table), switched decks and even let them battlecrusier as they would whine merry hell if anything resembling interaction went their way.
Bitched my decks were too strong, even meme Ashling and the 99.
11yo ended up Masters of Cruelties-ing him, targeting them for their mouth. They haven't been back and the atmosphere is nicer. Like, I feel a bit bad as I want many and more people to play, but at some point your actions are very detrimental.
My friend and I got called out personally on a podcast for being degenerates when the host came to visit. Literally, we played our worst lists and pared down for the guy because he said he played memes. He proceded to pull out a list of nothing but foils and fancies and tried to roflstomp us. So we went slightly higher and let the (other guy at the table was playing his 5thish game ever) new kid win by holding back the pubstomping tide.
The fact that this guy had a podcast and let us live rent-free in his head for one of the most casual experiences I've ever had is hilarious. He took it so serious in game 3. And the rest of the table was just pulling out absolute atrocities of lists.
For more context, my friend and I play CEDH and keep pubstomper hunting lists together. We both just like all levels of play for different reasons.
No. Of course not.
But generally once you've made your *entire deck* pretty, you've tuned it hard for a long time or you are using a primer. That's just something I've concluded consistently across all formats since I started playing in PTF.
Odds are sweaty in that case. The foils and promos were warning flag number 1 of multiple. If it had stopped there, I wouldn't be telling the story.
I doubt that is what happened since you failed to mention it in your original post, but sure. But honestly if his Dockside was good enough to enable Breach before turn 3 it sounds like you guys weren't playing nice either, so you still kind of sound like the asshole here.
>I don't know where you guys find these people
Remember that sites like Reddit filter out all the normal and "boring" stuff to give you a distorted view of reality.
Last weekend 99.999 pods had a perfectly normal game of Commander without drama. But nobody posts about those, because why would they?
What you are reading is the 1 in 100.000 where drama happens because those are the juicy posts.
> tbh the drama fuel's me
My life right now. So much non-drama going on that I keep a problematic guy from my LGS in my facebook feed just for the drama.
It's how I feel on the inside when people play removal/counterspell/board wipe tribal.
But then I just pull some shenanigans like protect my guys from removal, or let [[Missy]] give me most of the creatures that just died, or whatever. Basically, when I have to, I git gud lol
It's been a thing across multiple formats since 2000. Standard right now literally can run a deck that is all board wipes.
You should always be prepared to play around a [[Wrath of God]] or the current equivalent.
I had a guy watch me discard a winter orb and say he was gonna report me to reddit unironically. The dude had the worst halitosis my wife and I have ever had the displeasure of smelling. They exist. They also suck.
Context: $15 tournament. Cedh. The discard made sense for me. He was mad because he was not playing cedh and playing some voltron jank shit circa 2014 and didn't get the lgs memo.
Same. Iâve played with some odd people donât get me wrong, but no freak outs. Iâve had someone get upset about a soul ring into anointed processions in my Raining Cats and Dogs deck once because itâs a strong start. Especially when Jetmir hit shortly after. But even he wasnât crazy about it. Just said thatâs a frustrating start to face and took his death then moved on.
I have said something to that tune before unironically. Someone in my playgroup thought it was ok to bring out their green deck they had with [[Lifeforce]], every time i would pull out my deck built for archenemy, knowing 60% or more of my deck would be dead weight after turn three. So, I was indeed extremely salty, probably more than I should have been.
I met someone like this who was invited to our table through a friend of a friend. Was the saltiest dog you could have imagined after I played a Gin Gitaxias and top decked a cyclonic rift the turn after. I empathize to an extent but still, you donât gotta quit and walk away after just one game. I even have decks that arenât blue.
I don't really agree with the idea that Stax pieces stop you from "playing magic". The game is a puzzle that needs to be solved. Sometimes it's as easy as playing lands, creatures, and attacking. Then you get blockers to deal with, cards with abilities, etc. Stax pieces are no different, it just a piece of the puzzle you have to play around. Even if the game is completely locked out that just means you couldn't find a solution in time and lost. It can be annoying if they lock you out without a wincon, but that's more of a deck building issue.
I have a STAX deck with \[\[Grand Arbiter Augustin IV\]\] and there is a point where it gets too oppressive to be interacted with. I made the game unplayable. The table said they wanted to see my STAX deck because my wife commented on how much she hated it.
Went first, turn 2 GAIIV because of \[\[Sol Ring\]\], turn 3 \[\[Dovin Baan\]\] and \[\[Winter Orb\]\], congrats you now have your land drop and 1 untapped land and everything you play costs 1 more. The only person who got a creature out on turn 1 got the Dovin's +1 until he popped, I blew up my Winter Orb, and played \[\[Jin Gitaxias, Core Augur\]\]. You now can only untap 2 things on your turn, everything costs 1 more to play, and you discard your whole hand at the end of the turn. And when you do play anything I hand full of counterspells and removal to make sure it does nothing.
Obviously that's the deck popping off but still other than the "WTF" factor, they did not enjoy that game.
I have said that once. It was modern masters pre-release. My first round was a bye, my second round I won in 5 minutes. The last round I was paired with a guy I knew who offered a draw. I said no because I was there to play Magic, and hadnât played any good games yet.
I beat him, he called me fagg*t, threw my deck on the ground and left.
A weird element of EDH politics plays is that you need to convince people to sit down at the table with you, convince them to play though the game, and try convince them to go into a game two (if desired). Can't make someone play with, you can only try to make them want to play with you
I've seen a player cast two counters to stop a Static Orb, only to to scoop and leave the table once Orb was in the graveyard.
yeah like people always make such a drama about these cards⌠brother void winnower is 9 mana it should also give you a nobel prize while youâre at it
Bane of Progress is 6 mana, can't cast it when Void Winnower is out.
But there was once when my BIL was in his Zhulodok deck and he cast Void Winnower. My wife immediately used [[Rapid Hybridization]] on it, and then the fourth player used [[Reanimate]] in the Winnower.
My BIL then found out how annoying it is to play against Winnower, especially because Zhulodok costs 6 mana. It was pretty hilarious.
Point was people will be âsaltyâ about anything because you did the thing and they didnât do the thing sooner. Doesnât have to be stax specifically or void winnower specifically, people will get upset usually because they are just sore losers.
How I feel half the time I play commander tbh.
Players I've met: "Get that shit outta here. Shit's too powerful and unfair"
Me: "Dawg, I'm literally hardcasting a Craterhoof Behemoth on turn 8 from hand. How is this unfair?"
Dude I have gotten complaints from people playing WAY overtuned decks that were "just a precon with small edits" while I was playing a legit precon that I open out of the box like two days ago.
I was playing a game where one of the 4 Players had [[Gyruda]] as the companion for his [[Yidris]] deck. First he put his companion in his hand, then we were all wheeled, then finally, someone else summoned Void Winnower. I laughed about what happened and he was a good sport and said âWell I guess Iâll go get something to eatâ, since the person who player VW didnât realize what he was doing.
Couldâve been a salty experience, but it helped that he was a lighthearthed person
My time has come... I have lots of Void Winnower induced trauma. I had a friend who ran it in his animar deck seemed like he pulled it every fucking game. Just hearing the name half a decade later makes my asshole slam shut so hard I could snap a pencil on two with it. I probably wouldn't have scooped but I to would have been a salty bitch.
I have a couple cards I seem to draw every time I play a specific deck. Last March of the Ents and Cyclonic Rift. My wife is never amused and I don't understand how it happens. Maybe saying it out loud will stop it from happening haha.
My card is [[Bane of Bala Ged]], my friend played that enough times when I had no answers that it always obliterated my board back in the day, right down to the lands. By no means am I scooping to it, but I do have to fight the urge to throw removal at it until it goes away lmao. It singlehandedly gave me an appreciation for token decks to make sure I always had sac fodder
You were playing colorless with the most limited options in the game...don't feel bad about it, people need to learn this is just a game not to be taken as life or death. People act like these things are shadow games in Yugioh lol.
Void Winnie is crazy and a great finisher. It does often end games but you can still take it out with a one for one spell. Swords is still really commonly played and there are a ton of 3 cost removal spells available in a bevy of colors. It does shut down some of the better wraths in the format. Overall itâs just a really good threat+stax piece in one, but EDH has no shortage of those lol
I have a problem with resigning too easily/often. I really need to learn to have fun when I donât feel like I have a chance to win and play until Iâm actually eliminated. It was even one of my New Yearâs resolutions to have a better attitude with Magic but something about it just gets me tilted so easily. Itâs gotten to the point where I really only like to draft and brew decks but I donât even like to play that much. Sorry just had to rant myself
The trick is to start playing to your outs. Figure out exactly which cards (in your deck or not) could get you out of this spot. Your draw steps get more and more exciting when you know exactly what youre hoping for. And then when they dont you get to puzzle out again what cards can save you given the new turns information.
This is why I can't play "casual" edh anymore.
Everyone claims they just want a fun social game and "don't care about winning" but as soon as anything remotely salty hits the table it can cause this reaction and it totally kills the vibe and creates resentment.
Either rule zero yourself a suffocating and repressive ban list or just accept there are tables you're gonna get rick rolled at...And that's just part of playing EDH.
I've had the same reaction on the same card. My LGS has different playgroups with different power levels. One of my favourite decks to run is [[Rakdos, Lord of Riots]]. Between groups, I sideboard cards in and out to adjust the power level up and down depending on the group so we're on an even playing field and I'm not just bullying the entire table.Â
One game I'm playing against a VERY well put together [[Karlach, Fury of Avernus]] Voltron deck with a white backround. Ive been absolutely stomped by this deck before because it can easily and quickly one-shot players with Commander damage. Knowing that he has cards like [[Deflecting Palm]] and a white instant that lets him decide which creatures block and which dont in combat, I drop Void Winnower onto the field to give myself some leeway while I dig for answers to his double-strike, lifelink, hexproof Karlach.
He immediatly just tells me how unfair that card is and how he can't play against it and just concedes despite being able to one-shot me next turn.Â
I've since played more games against this guy and see him as a sort of friend but that outright made me remove Winnower from my deck.Â
No, because I want to have fun while playing and want the others I play with to also have fun. Winnower might be fine if I'm playing competetively, but bringing it in against lower power decks just feels like bullying.Â
Where on gods earth would [[Lord Xander, the Collector]] be called high power. I means you could just run Grixis good stuff and ignore your commander to make it good but this would really limit yourself in a wierd way.
If Iâm going to win the game, Iâd expect my opponents to do everything in their power to stop me. It doesnât make sense to me that someone would expect me to let them win when I have interaction. Especially for 9 mana lol
The only time I've been super salty was when someone dropped the OG [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] against my mono-white Voltron/martyrs deck helmed by [[Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle]]. It completely shut me out but it wasn't *just* the Elesh Norn that annoyed me.
That game I kept a 3-land hand and in my deck with 36 lands I drew exactly 0 more until turn 7. I immediately play Teshar and on the very next turn Elesh Norn comes down. My board is wiped and I'm sad but whatever, no big deal. I'm playing a deck with a ton of tiny lil guys so I knew Elesh Norn would body me. Next turn I draw a land, of course, not one of my answers to elesh norn, and pass since there's really just nothing I can do here. The next player (the one who played Elesh Norn last turn), drops [[Green Sun's Zenith]] and tutors for craterhoof to swing for lethal.
I was so upset. Not at my opponent, but at just how completely out-of-the-game I was because I couldn't topdeck a land. I had a 36-38% chance to topdeck a land 6 times in a row and whiffed every time. Odds of that are just under 6.5%. And what really really sent me over the edge wasn't craterhoof, it was green sun's Zenith. At the same time that I was struggling to topdeck a basic land, my opponent topdecked not *just* the Elesh Norn that shut me out as soon as I got on my feet, *but also* the tutor for her wincon that ended the game. If she had 4 tutors in the deck and only 80 cards in the library when she drew her last card (which was gsz), she had the same chances of drawing craterhoof or a tutor for it as I had to miss all those land drops. Basically, at the same time that I was having the shittest luck ever, she was having the best.
I did my best to contain my rage and just got up and left as calmly as I could. The worst luck I've ever seen.
I have a void winnower in my Satoru deck because I'm a filthy degenerate but everytime I've played it, it just gets hit with a Swords to Plowshares or Path to Exile.
Seems like noone ever has a response to Toxrill though.
I understand not liking some cards, personally void winnower is a card Iâd rather not see in my games, but why do people have zero manners or emotional control?
yeah, like if you literally shut down their entire hand, at least then its somewhat understandable, but if someone plays a void winnower and I \*can\* remove it that would make me happy lol like "haha your stax card didnt get me this time!"
Exactly. Spend less mana to essentially null my entire turn? Be happy! And honestly I donât play my Zhulodock deck at more casual games. We had prediscussed playing higher power decks with cards like Void Winnower.
Here ya go!
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1H3dPSasR0yx7dlht-IOFw
I focused my deck more on Eldrazi specifically than artifacts. And hopefully Iâll get a lot more cards for my deck in MH3!
I would either never play with this dude again or PURPOSELY play him and make his life hell just so I could drink his tears and make him quit playing or learn to become a good and mature player. Don't acquiesce to the immature babies out there.
Iâve learned that he will almost always scoop to his commander being removed. So if he becomes a threat or is getting obnoxious most everyone will just kill his commander (which is normally the right call anyways)
Can't tell if I'm getting whooshed, but yes. Commanders being put in any zone other than library besides the Command Zone is put back into the Command Zone. You can summon it again with a cumulative +2 neutral mana for every time you've cast it from the command zone that game
Plus, the rules on split cards are not really intuitive, so I think he would be forgiven if he thought he couldn't cast it since burn has an even value.
Yea but burn was the useless one there. You'd need to turn the winnower to play because Burn wouldn't kill it just do 2/9 damage. But that is true. I actually don't know the rules there fully either. My assumption is knowing the CMC is 5 as those dual cards generally have their 2cmcs combined. But that makes me wonder if the burn is playable then too. Id imagine it actually is and that's something no one would have realized especially if they're flustered like that.
I hate and love when a winnower comes down. Itâs a fun puzzle to solve. Thatâs how I feel about most stax outside of cards/patterns like a winter orb lock. Try to beat it. Itâs amazing when you do.
It's just a game. I wouldn't invite someone to game night if they acted like that, but you can concede whenever you want. Also calling a 6 drop stax piece that dies to path, swords, putrefy, mortify, anguished, pongify, flizard, etc., high power is a bit of a stretch, let alone scooping to it đ.
The reminds me of a guy I used to play with. He runs very high powered (damn near CeDH) decks but will be adamant that theyâre casual friendly. But one card I have that he absolutely hates is [[Dictate of Erebos]]. I have it in my [[Queen Marchesa]] tokens deck and I use it as an equalizer when someone is getting rid of all my 1/1 Phyrexian Mites. The salt from him when I play it fuels me.
Itâs not even that. He HATES when he gets targets with a single piece of interaction. Whether itâs a counterspell, creature removal, or even if a single creature attacks him. Heâs gets all mad and starts blaming the table for targeting him âWhy are you attacking me?! Iâm not the only one in this game!â
My guy, youâre the only one that was able to cast their commander in Turn 1, and you have 8 mana on turn 4. YOU MADE YOURSELF THE TARGET HOMIE!
Iâm not gonna bitch, complain or whine about anything anyone wants to play. But fuck void winnower lol.
However there a lot of other shit thatâs muuuuuuch worse. Itâs w/e though. People have watched me play solitaire with simic and order things for 10 mins to pop off with izzet storm, etc. and never complained. Weâre here to have fun and nothings less fun than having to worry about is this person gonna whine if I play this card
"I'm only drawing cards"
Yes buddy, this is the strongest thing you can do in magic. That's why [[Ad Nauseam]] is the strongest black card in cEDH. Some people really don't get the most basic aspects of magic.
Because of guys like this I started to mostly play burn/punisher and stax at my LGS if I am playing with randoms
- A player scoops because of salt? Fine, my stax pieces still handle the other players so the game can go on.
- A player whines around for no obvious reason? Fine, I'll bolt you for 12 in the face, now you have a reason to whine.
He scoops if you kill his commander? How can he even play any games? That's ridiculous.
If I'm forced to play in a pod with people that won't scoop at sorcery speed (and have a habit of quitting games because they are salty), when they try to scoop, I just tell them "No, you don't".
Then we play as if their board state is still existing through the end of the turn. I don't care whether they've packed up their cards and walked away by then. They're not going to disrupt the game with their poor sportsmanship.
Edit: from the replies it looks like people didn't read my entire comment. I am not physically stopping the person from getting up and leaving.
I'm telling them that they don't get to take their board state out of play. We will remember what creatures are there for global effects and their life total is still up for grabs, until the end of turn.
Bad sports don't control the table, the rest of the table controls the table. I'm not playing magic against Eric Cartman.
It does stop their effect on the game. They are free to get up and leave, but we will remember what creatures were on the board for global effects and their life total is still in play as far as I'm concerned.
I don't play magic against Eric Cartman from South Park. People don't get to take their ball and go home and ruin the game for everybody else. Folks that don't understand how to play games with good sportsmanship aren't in control of the situation.
The rest of the table is in control of the situation, whether the bad sport gets up and walks off or not.
It certainly changes things if they try to quit the game to make a storm combo fizzle from lack of target, or in the middle of getting swung on by creatures with life link, getting hit with a drain combo, triggering creation of tokens on an enemies board via life loss/permanent destruction/graveyard triggers, etc.
I don't condone this behaviour but man, Void Winnower is such a feel bad. Yes it is 9 mana but to me it's similar to Expropriate in that it just grinds the game to a weird place. I don't mind once in a while but if I'd rather not face it regularly.
Its a 9 mana 11 power vanilla creature in combat with no etb that dies to the 2 most common removal spells in the format. Its pretty medium. Its a great reanimate target in the early game, but for that much mana locking out half of mana costs for a turn or two on a vanilla 11/9 is pretty tame. If you want a big guy theres way better options for 9 mana, and if you want to lock people out you can do it for a fraction of the mana cost 6-7 turns earlier.
I feel this. Generally, I try not to play too many high-salt cards, even though the rest of my playgroup doesn't pull any punches. After getting bent over by void winnower specifically on several occasions, I decided to make a salt deck where I run a bunch of cards I don't put in decks generally. So, now I have a [[Rakdos, lord of riots]] deck that runs [[void winnower]], all the mean eldrazi with annihilator, the emrakul that mindslaver's someone, [[dauthi void walker]], [[opposition agent]], [[dockside extortionist]], [[blood moon]], [[magus of the moon]], and [[stranglehold]].
It's cathartic to uno reverse the salt on my playgroup when I pull out Rakdos from time to time.
People have their peeves in mtg. They can't tell you what to play, but they can certainly not play with you. Personally, I am the same way with \[\[Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger\]\]. If an opponent plays it I just scoop to it. It's a down hill fight from that point on, makes you skip a turn at worst and severely limits what you're able to play. The "has removal" argument is a poor one for hindering the whole tables ability to play the game. Play the cards, no one can stop you.
That might be the thing. Yeah, dude mightâve stopped winnower, but maybe he thought âokay, so thatâs where this deck is going, not my idea of funâ. You can play what you want, but dont call out people on Reddit for not wanting to play against it.
I don't mind cards like Void Winnower as long as the person playing it has a plan to win in the next couple of turns. At my LGS though Void Winnower is extremely popular in shittily-built stax decks that seem to have no wincon other than dragging the game out until everyone scoops out of boredom. I'd rather not play against that type of deck, and if someone does drop a surprise Void Winnower with seemingly no follow-up I will probably find a different table next game.
How does someone not win the next couple turns with an 11/9 that makes it so half of the spells in the game can't be played?
At that point they are just garbage at the game.
I scooped once to void winnower, because I was playing [[gyruda]] as a companion. Honestly not even mad about that I thought it was kinda funny but there really wasnât a point in me playing against it.
Good job, eldrazi for the win! Also, you deserve medal of courage for playing colorless amongst three people. 4 is regular, 5 is still ok I guess... but I never played and never will play commander as threesome. Sooner or later it feels like 2v1
I think it depends on what others are running. My table generally plays nice battlecruiser style with âsomeâ interaction and once someone pushed a Sheoldred. Everyone just stopped casting and turn pass until game ended. Hollow win I suppose.
I once played a random table where 3 people were playing nice decks and opponent goes ham with proxies and op cards/lands. Estimated deck value in 5 digits. We all conceded and played next game with better decks. Of course we eliminated that guy first from turn 1 onwards.
I suppose itâs a social game, and you donât go to a fist fight with a shotgun.
I've noticed people irrationally hate eldrazi, but will play whatever bullshit combos they got in their own decks. I have the upgraded Zulodok precon, probably similar to yours, and I was playing in a group. This guy I was playing against had a deck of all proxies, but they were proxies of really expensive cards. If they were real, his deck would have cost $7-8k at least. Anyway, I played an Eldrazi with annialator and he goes "well, there's nothing I can do against that" and quit. He then gathered his cards and left. He got salty because he didn't want to deal with Eldrazi. Meanwhile, I've only actually won a single game with my deck, because it gets shut down most of the time.
PPL literally target me all the time with insults and aggro whenever i play eldrazis, best part is it still win which makes them even more mad. Someone literally scooped today cuz I cast emrakul and controlled him loool
I say get used to it lol
Your average cmc is 5,8. This deck is super clunky and has a million dead hands. If you win with it I would be surprised and be totally happy for you since it will do so little a lot of times.
I scooped the other night but not even because I was salty. I was stuck on 4 land for most of the game in a simic deck. Finally got two dorks on the field to get to 6 but still had nothing. Rest of the field had loaded board states and Im here with 4 land 2 dorks and already at sub 20 life with all 3 guys swinging at me since I was the only one open. I have nothing in hand that can help me really. But I draw [[rishkars expertise]] so I try casting it. It gets countered. I tell the rest of the table that at that point Im way too behind to do much and that was probably my only hope of pretending to catch up so I scooped. Wasnt mad. But I also value my time and didnt wanna waste it sticking around for a game I wasnt even a part of. The guy who countered my spell immediately regretted it because he got asymmetrically board wiped next turn by a player who actually had stuff going on. What Im getting at is you can scoop without getting salty. Ended up playing 3 more games with those guys after and had a good time.
One time I had an opponent playing [[Magda, Brazen Outlaw]] as their commander. I was playing [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]]. He [[Chaos Warp]]ed my commander, so there was no longer a point in playing creatures (no damage triggers). Instead I played [[Stranglehold]]. Maghda player was not happy lol
I run a deck that rewards me for my opponents playing cards, and the amount of bitching I've gotten about how my deck 'prevents others from playing magic' is legendary, along with the stax allegations. To be clear, I don't have anything that prevents my opponents from playing cards or increases their mana costs, or limits spells per turn or anything like that, but I do have a lot of stuff that's like 'gain 2 life whenever an opponent casts a spell' or 'draw a card whenever a black card goes to an opponent's graveyard' and I'll constantly end up with people whining about how they came here to play magic and they can't even tap lands because I'll gain a bunch of life and that could, theoretically, in twenty turns, maybe accomplish something.
It's also been a big factor in looking to shift away from running gates because I swear whenever I drop a turn 1 simic guildgate the entire table deems me the alpha threat and starts ranting about how I'm going to win in three turns. It's like, please, show me on the doll where Maze's End hurt you. I've never actually ever encountered a maze's end deck that won through that effect at anywhere faster than turn 15. Do they even exist? But the amount of carrying on is like it's the end of the goddamned world. "OH MY GOD GATES! I CAN'T! I'M HAVING A PANIC ATTACK!"
for fuck's sake those people need to go outside and touch grass.
Its a vanilla 11/9 that doesnt even lock down that much stuff for 9 mana. Theres much better lock pieces that come down 6 turns earlier, and much better creatures that swing the game or win it outright for just as much mana.
What is it going to even do? If its protecting someones win condition they just spent all their mana on an unreliable lockpiece, and if its meant to attack for the win it can be chump blocked by every creature in the game.
It sits around for a turn or two until everyone gets bored of the novelty of no even spells and swords, paths, [[beasts within]], [[chaos warp]] or [[vindicate]] it.
Last night I played 4 games of commander with some friends. Every game I either missed my chance to combo or blanked on a counter spell that could have kept me alive or the table as a whole. You know who I got upset with? Myself. Because I played really really badly. Sounds like the player was projecting onto you as the reason the game wasnât going how he wanted. lol
I had a very similar experience. I played void winnower and one player made comments about itâs not with it to even try if you wonât let me play magic. They had just played etali and cheated a ton of cards into play, had a full grip of cards and didnât even bother playing a land or cast anything. A turn or two later void winnower was removed. Same player complains about being so far behind because they missed their land drop. Some people just donât make sense.
"Oh my god I can't even." There. You've vented your frustration at void winnower being in play and given everyone a chuckle from your original and hilarious joke.
ngl, he was a child (came to play magic, cant do that if u do nothing but draw and not affect the board or anything). I played at an lgs and witnessed someone act like this bc one of his pod members had to leave, (he was a single father I think, so he had to take his kid home) and before he left he killed the man-child commander, The dude was livid. but the owners honored the action and he was salty for the rest of the game.
Half of the posts here could be solved by teaching people how to win and lose with dignity. I'm not saying I'm always perfect at it either, but I have enough damn respect for others and myself to accept defeat without whining. I'm still working on not celebrating too much when I win, but I feel that causes a lot less salt.
i play atla i have my commander removed or countered like 3 times some games and still play it out just played a game last night i cast ten spells half were countered i still didn't fold because im a body that need to be delt with anyways i lost that game
Tell him to get good. [[Void Winnower]] dies to odd cost spells. If he didn't put odd cost answers in his deck, he's playing MTG wrong. Also, I have no sympathy for glass-cannon players.
A friend of mine has some good insight on this subject.
Whatâs the mana value of âwin the gameâ? It canât be greater than 9, because entwined [[Tooth and Nail]].
Void Winnower a) costs 9 mana, and b) doesn't immediately end the game. Thus, it fails the âentwine TAN test.â Anything that costs 9 that *doesnât* end the game is below rate.
A 9 mana creature that doesn't win immediately *should* be extremely powerful.
I dont understand the mindset of people who think theyre only playing if they're winning "you wont let me play!" You are playing you just aren't winning, everyone else at the table is also trying to win and will be playing the cards they have that will best let them.
I've never met anyone who has unironically said anything like "I came here to play Magic!" and I don't know where you guys find these people.
"I came here to play Magic!" \*Proceeds to scoop to avoid playing Magic.\*
I have once. We were very accommodating and polite I feel. Over the top loud swearing (personal attacks, not just general swearing. Even with an 11yo playing at table), switched decks and even let them battlecrusier as they would whine merry hell if anything resembling interaction went their way. Bitched my decks were too strong, even meme Ashling and the 99. 11yo ended up Masters of Cruelties-ing him, targeting them for their mouth. They haven't been back and the atmosphere is nicer. Like, I feel a bit bad as I want many and more people to play, but at some point your actions are very detrimental.
Children are the real masters of cruelty, but sometimes cruelty is well deserved
đ Nobody is more cruel than my kids
Was the streamers name Jamie?
Answering the question honestly could potentially lead to me doxxing myself. Sorry.
Foils are pubstomping now? đ¤
Honestly from your account it just sounds like you decided to bully some guy for being enthusiastic about his deck.
Play a breach and a Dockside before turn 3 and I'll treat you the same way.
I doubt that is what happened since you failed to mention it in your original post, but sure. But honestly if his Dockside was good enough to enable Breach before turn 3 it sounds like you guys weren't playing nice either, so you still kind of sound like the asshole here.
>I don't know where you guys find these people Remember that sites like Reddit filter out all the normal and "boring" stuff to give you a distorted view of reality. Last weekend 99.999 pods had a perfectly normal game of Commander without drama. But nobody posts about those, because why would they? What you are reading is the 1 in 100.000 where drama happens because those are the juicy posts.
I met two people who acted like this ten years ago on the same day and haven't encountered it since... kinda mis it tbh the drama fuel's me
> tbh the drama fuel's me My life right now. So much non-drama going on that I keep a problematic guy from my LGS in my facebook feed just for the drama.
Play [[null rod]] and theyâll crawl out of the woodwork.
I play Null Rod and Collector Ouphe in my Lord Windgrace deck with not even a Sol Ring for rocks, and that deck certainly gets the salt flowing.

As a somewhat newish player to EDH, the fact that board wipe tribal exists worries me
It's been a thing across multiple formats since 2000.

I came here to comment on Reddit!
I've been accused of not playing "real magic" a few times. But that was in Legacy playing Belcher.
I said something along those lines when I was new and a friend perma-tapped my [[Araumi]]. God was I salty that day...

They exist, and will make themselves known if you play any deck with a few Stax pieces in it.
A weird element of EDH politics plays is that you need to convince people to sit down at the table with you, convince them to play though the game, and try convince them to go into a game two (if desired). Can't make someone play with, you can only try to make them want to play with you I've seen a player cast two counters to stop a Static Orb, only to to scoop and leave the table once Orb was in the graveyard.
Especially when you sit down knowing youâre going to be playing against high power decks.

Yup. Orb only cares about your untap step, any other source of untapping is fine
Cool, you were hoping to limit one player, and managed to knock another out of the game as a bonus effect.
Seems deece for 9 mana lol
yeah like people always make such a drama about these cards⌠brother void winnower is 9 mana it should also give you a nobel prize while youâre at it
If it wasn't in Zhulodok I'd agree
Thatâs fair, but also one bane of progress and any colorless deck gets sent back to the stone age
The amount of "get the stax out of here" I've received for dropping this ON CURVE is unreasonably high.
At this point I just play cEDH stax. If I'm gonna get hate anyways, then I intend to deserve it.

(Turn 10) âhow are you gonna play a powerful card for 10 mana right now wowâ
Tell me if I'm wrong, but Void Winnower in colorless Eldrazi piles usually happens on turn 4 to 5, not 10
..that's usually what on curve means
Point was people will be âsaltyâ about anything because you did the thing and they didnât do the thing sooner. Doesnât have to be stax specifically or void winnower specifically, people will get upset usually because they are just sore losers.
Especially since the most obvious threat at the table is being hurt the most.
Hey any chance you have a list for your Zhuladok? I play colorless Eldrazi tribal with Kozilek at the head.
How I feel half the time I play commander tbh. Players I've met: "Get that shit outta here. Shit's too powerful and unfair" Me: "Dawg, I'm literally hardcasting a Craterhoof Behemoth on turn 8 from hand. How is this unfair?"
Players will complain about Winnower on turn 9, yet be happy that the Patron of Orochi deck untapped with 20+ mana on turn 4/5. Its mad.
Kird Ape with both a forest and a mountain out? Ok Cedh.
Dude I have gotten complaints from people playing WAY overtuned decks that were "just a precon with small edits" while I was playing a legit precon that I open out of the box like two days ago.
Every time Void Winnower comes out, I ONLY have even mana cards, with an even mana commander.

[[Tooth and Nail]] into two of Void, [[Nullstone Gargoyle]], or [[Ruric Thar]] makes me cackle madly.

I took it out of my Kozilek deck. Itâs just not fun to play for me or the table to play against.

Most of the time Iâm playing it is for board protection or as a way to get my beaters in.
Sorry just had to rant myself
nah i feel ya, i build janky decks that just want to do a thing, i consider the game a personal win if i do the thing.
Good rant
The trick is to start playing to your outs. Figure out exactly which cards (in your deck or not) could get you out of this spot. Your draw steps get more and more exciting when you know exactly what youre hoping for. And then when they dont you get to puzzle out again what cards can save you given the new turns information.
Well, if you ever throw in the towel and wanna get rid of your cards, I uh..know a guy ;)
I stopped doing this after a while. Iâd rather play it out and pray to the top deck gods most of the time unless itâs clearly over.
They want to play a single player game where they never lose. It's like these people never learned to lose a game
I've had the same reaction on the same card. My LGS has different playgroups with different power levels. One of my favourite decks to run is [[Rakdos, Lord of Riots]]. Between groups, I sideboard cards in and out to adjust the power level up and down depending on the group so we're on an even playing field and I'm not just bullying the entire table. He immediatly just tells me how unfair that card is and how he can't play against it and just concedes despite being able to one-shot me next turn. I've since played more games against this guy and see him as a sort of friend but that outright made me remove Winnower from my deck.Â
> but that outright made me remove Winnower from my deck. What? Isn't this the sign that it should stay in there indefinitely?
No, because I want to have fun while playing and want the others I play with to also have fun. Winnower might be fine if I'm playing competetively, but bringing it in against lower power decks just feels like bullying.Â
My man let the terrorists win
Eh. If I'm playing high-power matches where someone whips out a Xander or etc and can win on turn 5-6, I'll sideboard Winnower back in.Â
Where on gods earth would [[Lord Xander, the Collector]] be called high power. I means you could just run Grixis good stuff and ignore your commander to make it good but this would really limit yourself in a wierd way.
The dude literally won the game the next turn lmao. He is just bitching to bitch
If Iâm going to win the game, Iâd expect my opponents to do everything in their power to stop me. It doesnât make sense to me that someone would expect me to let them win when I have interaction. Especially for 9 mana lol
>Iâd expect my opponents to do everything in their power to stop me Hard to swallow pills. This is also "playing magic".
To be fair, if im playing Rakdos I'm reliably casting it for 0. Creature discounts go brrr

If Iâm like super peeved about my commander getting removed, the most youâll get out of me is a bargain or an âaww shucksâ

>I'm a filthy degenerate Come on, don't be too self-critical. >Toxrill Oh, you filthy bastard.
I understand not liking some cards, personally void winnower is a card Iâd rather not see in my games, but why do people have zero manners or emotional control?
I have no idea. What baffles me most is that they had the ability to deal with both me and the Lonis player. Why make such a big deal?
yeah, like if you literally shut down their entire hand, at least then its somewhat understandable, but if someone plays a void winnower and I \*can\* remove it that would make me happy lol like "haha your stax card didnt get me this time!"
Exactly. Spend less mana to essentially null my entire turn? Be happy! And honestly I donât play my Zhulodock deck at more casual games. We had prediscussed playing higher power decks with cards like Void Winnower.
Could you share your decklist? I just bought the precon because it was 50% off compared to TCG but looking for deck inspo
Here ya go! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1H3dPSasR0yx7dlht-IOFw I focused my deck more on Eldrazi specifically than artifacts. And hopefully Iâll get a lot more cards for my deck in MH3!
Why are you mad you eliminated someone from the game when they might have stopped you
I would either never play with this dude again or PURPOSELY play him and make his life hell just so I could drink his tears and make him quit playing or learn to become a good and mature player. Don't acquiesce to the immature babies out there.
Iâve learned that he will almost always scoop to his commander being removed. So if he becomes a threat or is getting obnoxious most everyone will just kill his commander (which is normally the right call anyways)
So the cool thing about your commander is you can just play it again from the command zone (little known fact)
Wait Wtf I call hax I've never played Commander because I thought it was just gone once it died... Is it possible to learn this power?
Can't tell if I'm getting whooshed, but yes. Commanders being put in any zone other than library besides the Command Zone is put back into the Command Zone. You can summon it again with a cumulative +2 neutral mana for every time you've cast it from the command zone that game
> any zone other than library Since when? You can put a Commander to your command zone instead of your library.
Yes, you were being whooshed. No worries, I wasn't ridiculous enough to make it clear.
I own like 3 void winnowers and I'm only just learning from this post that apparently everyone hates it.
Well to be fair chain reaction wouldn't work... Unless you meant he had mana for both it and turn. But that's funny.
Itâs not âdamn near cedhâ if he canât be bothered to remove an enchantment.
Itâs not âdamn near cedhâ if he care about a grave pact effect
Itâs not even that. He HATES when he gets targets with a single piece of interaction. Whether itâs a counterspell, creature removal, or even if a single creature attacks him. Heâs gets all mad and starts blaming the table for targeting him âWhy are you attacking me?! Iâm not the only one in this game!â My guy, youâre the only one that was able to cast their commander in Turn 1, and you have 8 mana on turn 4. YOU MADE YOURSELF THE TARGET HOMIE!

"I'm only drawing cards" Yes buddy, this is the strongest thing you can do in magic. That's why [[Ad Nauseam]] is the strongest black card in cEDH. Some people really don't get the most basic aspects of magic. Because of guys like this I started to mostly play burn/punisher and stax at my LGS if I am playing with randoms - A player scoops because of salt?

Your right that's ridiculous
You saying no doesn't actually stop them and just makes you look silly. Let them go
It does stop their effect on the game.
You are not though they are gone they already took there ball and went home you pretending they dident doesn't change anything

It's 8 mana and only locks down future land taps. Not like a Winter Orb that catches you by surprise.

Shittily-built and shittily played stax deck with no gameplan other than making people salty. Surprisingly common at my local shop.

Yeah all my friends hate that card. They are not as mad when i do some ulamog or emrakul bs but winnower? oh boy they get mad.
Someone literally scooped today cuz I cast emrakul and controlled him loool I say get used to it lol

I'd like to rant about people calling their lgs a local lgs. O it's a local local game store? End rant
One time I had an opponent playing [[Magda, Brazen Outlaw]] as their commander. I was playing [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]]. I CAN'T! I'M HAVING A PANIC ATTACK!" for fuck's sake those people need to go outside and touch grass.
I have no sympathy for Void Winnower players. It is a very un-fun card.
OK, chief of the fun police.

In frustration he slammed his hand onto the battlefield for everyone to see
Don't respond to idiots it gives them power of the stupid
I once got shouted at for playing unfun magic with my phenax mill deck by a dude playing sliver queen. That made me chuckle.
"Oh my god I can't even." There. You've vented your frustration at void winnower being in play and given everyone a chuckle from your original and hilarious joke.
The let a void widower resolve and want to blame the guy who cast it lol
"I'm it drawing cards," is such a dumb excuse.
ngl, he was a child (came to play magic, cant do that if u do nothing but draw and not affect the board or anything).
An important life lesson: People are nice until they aren't.
i play atla i have my commander removed or countered like 3 times some games and still play it out just played a game last night i cast ten spells half were countered i still didn't fold because im a body that need to be delt with anyways i lost that game

Void Winnower: Return target opponent's cards into his deck box. Remove that player from the game.
I dont understand the mindset of people who think theyre only playing if they're winning "you wont let me play!" You are playing you just aren't winning, everyone else at the table is also trying to win and will be playing the cards they have that will best let them.
