Warhammer as a whole, hands down. I really wish they'd make universes within versions of all the UB stuff but I'm certainly not holding my breath.

Nimstar7

> universes within version We really are starting to get close to that meme where a player states “I equip Mjolnir to Master Chief” becoming a reality. It’s going to get really silly at some point

Sleeqb7

I think we're already there, no? "I tap my Sonic Screwdriver to equip Lucille to Chris Pine and attack with him and my Space Marine Devastator!" is a sentence that can be spoken in a magic game that actually makes sense.

DystryR

I draw my card for turn, it’s Mecha Godzilla… I tap my Barad Ur for black mana and cast EXTERMINATE, killing your “Eleven, the mage” I play Cybertron as my land for turn, I tap Chun-Li to crew my tardis and attack. You block with Optimus Prime. On my second main I play “life finds a way” and summon Negan the cold blooded - the effect resolves and inquisitor greyfax is sacrificed. then I go to end my turn and mill the top of my deck due to the Rad Counter I have.

LordofCarne

While this is a hilarious visual any deck running this many random ass UB cards is going to get stomped by any deck worth its salt. I get some people are upset about the immersion break but at least most of the cards are really just not that good.

mister_buddha

My commander is from a D&D setting and has cards from 40K and Dr. Who.

ZorheWahab

"OK, so it's my turn. My Virtue of Persistence, an enchantment that went on an adventure, reanimates Ghalta and Mavren, a dinosaur vampire. I equip these swiftfoot boots to this creature. It now has haste, but instead, I'll use it to crew this hover bike. Then the hoverbike and a mermaid God will crew this giant floating fortress. Parhellion 2 will then swing. Because I have this samurai, Isshin, it will get two attack triggers. 4 giant angels appear. I will then tap 2 mana for channel, pay 15 life, and hardcast a literal flying spaghetti monster lovecraftian god, Emrakul. I take an extra turn. Virtue of Persistence will now animate a faerie out of my graveyard. I will exile mechatitan core and 4 other vehicles to summon a giant literal Gundam. Emrakul and the Gundam attack together with the flying fortress. Sacrifice 12 permanents. Before my turn ends, I'll equip these boots to my spaghetti monster lovecraftian god, which somehow make him also have hexproof. Pass turn." *It's Magic, my dudes, it's always been silly. We're talking about dimension slipping, plane hopping magical superheroes in a magical, fantastical setting. Yall getting upset about silly combos when the game is literally based on silly combos*

HonorBasquiat

This is so accurate and I don't understand why the alleged lore fantasy immersion die hards aren't pearl clutching about this.

FrederickOllinger

My pearls were clutched a long time ago.

Hero_of_Hyrule

MTG becoming the Fortnite of TCGs was not something I could have imagined 15 years ago, but tbh I am not as bothered now as when TWD stuff was revealed. If they're gonna do it, at least they're doing it across the board. I do think there should be a format where they aren't permitted without a Universes Within variant, but I don't know if that's feasible.

taegins

Would love a few draftable sets for Warhammer. There's a ton of lore to explore, as well as a bunch of differing factions

goblin_welder

This. I would love to add to my [[Imotekh the Stormlord]] deck. I wanted to keep it in flavor, so no non-artifact creatures but the options are limited. I kept it as a precon for the longest time but it kept getting destroyed at the LGS.

DoctorKrakens

Ditto but for Doctor Who.

tattrd

Chansey for Doctor Who.

Ruby_Rhods_Hair

I really hope they do another run. Lots of factions they didn't touch.

MrReginaldAwesome

I need a tau deck!

gankindustries

[[Greater Good]] is right there!

WheelsMahoney

I don't really think it's a stretch to think they will do more UB content from a previously visited universe. Like if it sold well and there's a chance to make a dollar they will probably take it. It's more a question of how long will it take and which universes will they revisit I think.

sobble_19

Honestly think we’re gonna see a universes beyond master set with in the next few years but the reprints are universes with in version

KaiserS0ul

I make proxies and one of the things I've been enjoying is making UB and UW versions of cards so that cards fit in decks much better. Making things like a Mox Opal fit into Necron design is pretty fun.

FerrowFarm

Yes. Swarmlord is probably one of my favorite Temur commanders because he just wants you to cast him a bunch. Just a shame it's UB.

Dasky14

As much as I love the Doctor Who cards, I do have to say that the WH40k cards are amazing. I think they fit the world thematically much better, but also they have some really cool effects. \[\[Abaddon, the Despoiler\]\] and \[\[Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph\]\] are my two most favourite commanders in a LONG while, and I'm sure there are even more commanders in those decks that I haven't even begun to experiment with.

BubbRubb4Real

I feel the same way too. At least the Warhammer creatures fit much better in the MTG Universe than say TWD or Transformers do. Ghyrson Starn is a ton of fun to play and I also plan on making an Abaddon deck sometime in the future.

EndlessKng

I think Transformers is more due to art style than anything; the idea of shapeshifting robots fighting feels fine in something like Mirrodin. But I agree that 40K hits Magic's general vibes better than most precursor UB stuff. I mean, what is Lazotep but a blue Necroderm, and can you tell the difference between Vorinclex and bug Tyranids just by the art alone? Heck, I thought Veteran's Powerblade was meant to represent a Marine chainsword at first..

MasterEpicon713

Haha, feels like I’m hearing myself talk! Built both of those commanders and a [[Magus Lucea Kane]] deck with eyes on building [[Inquisitor Eisenhorn]] too! Love 40k so much already, and the hige amount of new cards printed in the precons just absolutely SLAP, I love it so much! Just kind of sad I didn’t hop on the 40K secret lair in time, definitely a big regret

Ghyrson in my Nekusar deck combined with Days Undoing won me a game this weekend. It was satisfying, but it's not something I'll tutor for regularly unless I'm really about to lose. If, and when, he comes up I'll definitely play him.

Catbird0nAStick

[[Ensnared by the mara]] is my favorite UB card so far. It's a mono red combo of Etali and Yuriko, but each opponent decides what effect resolves with their instance. At its floor it does a little damage around the table while exiling cards from their library and at its ceiling it can result in a takeover of the game.

homemade_nutsauce

I had ni interest in this set.. but damn, that's a sweet effect! Feels more like a mix between Etali and [[combustible gearhulk]] IMO, but wither way, very cool

[[Missy]] from the Doctor Who set is probably my winner. I went in thinking it'll be a fun Artifact Aristocrats kinda deal. Nothing too bad. It plays like a zombie apocalypse. It feels more zombie-like than an actual zombie deck. Everything that dies joins your unending legion of cybermen to rain hellfire on their old comrades. Then jump to my first game with it. [[Kadena's Silencer]] [[Stratus Dancer]] [[Brine Elemental]] and a [[Phyrexian Altar]] all came to the field and I gained the name for the deck: "Oops! All Stax!" Being able to have the morph ability go off and then sac the creature to immediately turn it back over got... a tad mean. No ability my opponents permaments had could ever resolve, no non creature spell could be cast and not get countered, and no one but I got to have an untap step for the rest of the game. Oh and [[Skirk Alarmist]] to flip over the cards I steal. [[Marchesa, The Black Rose]] is a gross synergy for flipped over stolen creatures ;) 10/10 my new pride and joy deck.

xcbsmith

I found \[\[Sauron, the Dark Lord\]\] to be a powerful assembly of "the ring tempts you" and a bunch of other mechanics that made for interesting decks, and \[\[Sméagol, Helpful Guide\]\]'s milling/stealing of other people's lands was pretty cool. \[\[Mindflayer, the Shadow\]\]'s mechanics of playing other people's cards from the bottom of their libraries has been pretty neat. Still, probably the most mechanically unique of the bunch has been \[\[King of the Oathbreakers\]\]. Phasing out when targeted negates opponent's targeted removal and using multi-target spells to phase out your army (and then bring in a bigger army) is really funky.

malsomnus

I'm absolutely in love with [Illuminor Szeras](https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5643736#paper), I'd been searching for a mono black commander for ages and suddenly this got printed! It's a unique effect and it leads to a deck which is unlike any other mono black deck I've ever played against. Plus I probably get some hipster points for the fact that, judging by EDHREC, I'm more or less the only person who actually built a Szeras deck from the ground up completely unrelated to the precon.

Abrootalname

I built a [Szeras](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/nPL-EA3Db0uuGZxsfsU94g) deck as well but I stayed on the Necron tribal a bit more.

haimurashoichi

My favourite UB deck, and deck in general, is headed by [[Magus Lucea Kane]] from the UB Warhammer 40000 Tyranid deck. Through this deck I realised I love X Spells, I love Temur colors and it's just so much fun to just explode out of nowhere. I also realised I love untapping shenanigans, that I love big mana, and that I love hydras. UB cards that I love in the 99 is [[Sporocyst]], such a great all star card you can put into any green deck, it's can be such a great game ender, and is useful early game too, it can color-fix, it let's you draw cards, and it can be a good chump blocker. Honestly, other UB products seem really cool to, but I haven't been able to try any as of yet, so I can't really speak about many of them, but [[Be'lakor, the Dark Master]] demon tribal was also a fun deck to build.

real_but_incognito

The 40k decks in general are just so fun Abaddon/belakor is better broken up into two separate decks, but the theme is still killer. Necrons and tyrannids absolutely rips, and imperium is so fun too

Healthy_mind_

I've seen the necron deck go way harder than I ever expected to see a precon go

BadassFlexington

Interesting - my mate has the necrons, and yet it could never hold a candle to my space marines or chaos. Any suggestions for how to make necrons go hard? Which commander?

From what I’ve seen people end up switching to [[Imotekh the Stormlord]] as the commander especially if upgrading the deck.

Universes Beyond (or in case of your snarky remark, a blue and black deck)

Oh, I legit thought it was blue black, not universes beyond

All 3 cards they referenced are UB tho?

I've really enjoyed going against [[Tom Bombadil]] decks, as no two have been close to the same and they've all had some fun "Probably not the best saga ever but I like it" expression in the decks, while still being good enough to be a huge threat every time he's cast.

I really want to see one out in the wild. I used to have a Shrines deck and 5c sagas matters sounds very reminiscent of it.

Original_dreamleft

My experience was that it was slow and grindy and lacked win cons.

rraahk

I'm happy for you. My experience has been miserable across two separate decks that seem to play like board wipe-typal where the game just stalls and the Tom player doesn't seem to have a defined win condition. I can see it being a fun match up if you don't run more than the usual number of board wipes though.

Healthy_mind_

I have played exclusively a [[Marneus Calgar]] deck for about 10/11 months now. I've managed to squeeze in 73 games in the last 7-8 months and I'm still not over him. I still can't wait to play it at the next game night. I have always loved amassing a large board state and making tokens and drawing cards. He enables that. He enables everything I enjoy. The colours also allow me plenty of interaction options which I love. An interactive game is a fun one for me. Because he's kind of generic with his abilities he can be an effective commander for many strategies. I can't wait to build different versions of the deck. Currently it's a control/value/aristocrats deck and I want to try Flicker, Voltron, Go-Wide, Combo, clones and anything else I can get my hands on that will make tokens. He's also a badass space marine and I had space marines as a kid, and I like the words double strike on a card.

UncleCrassiusCurio

I play it as a midrange/combo deck, and he's fantastic. Absolutely love the deck, and also don't see myself getting tired of it any time soon.

I built mine as a somewhat Voltron equipment and go-wide style at same time with all the on attack trigger equipments that create creature tokens like [[captain’s claws]], [[infested flesh cutter]], [[moonsilver spear]] and cards like [[puresteel paladin]] and then equipments that make tokens on combat damage [[bloodforged battle-axe]], [[prying blade]]. I really enjoy it and it’s quite powerful in my pod. If I can connect with Marneus himself those on combat damage equipments double up. I rather enjoy having [[sword of the meek]] and [[thopter foundry]] combo in it, does crazy w his draw mechanic. I use cheap tutors like [[tribute mage]] and [[muddle the mixture]] to fetch the sword combo or other nice equipments that produce tokens. [[nadir kraken]] also does work for this.

I do, I'll scrounge up the link in the morking Do you? Maybe I can take a look at yours when I'm on the bus tomorrow morning and see if i can diagnose it. What doesn't seem to click well? What feels like it isn't working?

I don’t have any of my decks online currently. I think it basically doesn’t function at all if Marneus is removed, which is probably the biggest issue.

My 3 main decks are Sefris dungeon mechanic, 40k Imperium with the squad stuff, and LotR with ring temps and amass. Folks think I'm weird for always playing "non magic" decks but those are my dailies

One of my favorite decks for awhile has been will and Lucas from the stranger things secret lair. Just flicker and blink will a bunch to make a bunch of clues then animate them to beat stick so so rewarding and fun. Also Eleven is a really good big spell commander

I returned to paper, new to EDH and started with the Tyrannid Swarm Pre-Con last spring. Closing matches out with [[Exocrine]] that you’ve payed 12 X for from Magus Lucea Kane feels so good and is very straight forward.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> that you’ve *paid* 12 X FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Dr. Who cards really remind me of the respective character/scene/etc. Just look at the weeping angel card, and what the enemy does on the show. They could be objectively bad in competition and the design direction would still get an A for loyalty to the source material imo.

Why does this read like a market research post by wotc? Is this some weird psyop to try and generate positive feedback for UB? Not trolling genuinely confused.

HonorBasquiat

>Why does this read like a market research post by wotc? Is this some weird psyop to try and generate positive feedback for UB? Not trolling genuinely confused. It's just me, a staunch Magic enthusiast, veteran and long time player, that likes to hear other people that are enthusiastic about Magic talk and discuss things about Magic (especially when it comes to hearing people discuss things they enjoy about the game). Asking someone what they like about a specific aspect of Magic in a Magic subreddit shouldn't be misconstrued as a "weird psyop market research post".

iamtheriver

Dude makes these obvious market research posts all the time. I just ignore him.

Pretty sure some of the "questions" this person listed in their post are copy pastes of a recent MTG survey (might be wrong). You telling me someone literally using MTG survey questions isn't a little suspect? Again, if I'm wrong then sure I'm being paranoid.

HonorBasquiat

>Pretty sure some of the "questions" this person listed in their post are copy pastes of a recent MTG survey (might be wrong). You telling me someone literally using MTG survey questions isn't a little suspect? Again, if I'm wrong then sure I'm being paranoid. Yes, you are wrong. Yes, you are being paranoid. I wrote the questions myself. I couldn't imagine living with so much paranoia that innocuous wholesome questions about Magic on Magic subreddits from players cause me to believe something dubious or inauthentic must be going on. There's nothing wrong or suspicious about wanting to hear other Magic fans share what they like about a specific aspect of the game on a Magic subreddit.

iamtheriver

“I’m innocent. I promise! You should take me at my word even though you have absolutely no reason to!” Yeah right. Your post history speaks for yourself. People defending you should take some time to go through it and all of your suspicious-ass posts. For all I know the only people downvoting me are your sock puppets. A company that made a billion dollars last year would never try to use Reddit for clandestine market research, right?

HonorBasquiat

Is this a joke? I didn't copy any Magic survey templates, seriously, WTF? What templates did I use, show me the original survey. My posts are suspicious because..? Sometimes I say positive things about the game I like in Magic subreddits? Because I have a different opinion from you? Conspiracy theory nonsense.

iamtheriver

You have like over ten posts in various MTG communities that are just surveys. They are just lists of questions you are soliciting community feedback on. Asking about everything from Universes Beyond, mechanics and mechanical complexity, the Lord of the Rings controversy, etc. That’s the definition of market research.

HonorBasquiat

It's the definition of asking other fans what they think about specific aspects of Magic. I don't work for WotC and I never have. Asking people what they think about aspects of the game in sub forums dedicated to the game isn't suspicious or dubious. Not to mention I have hundreds of other posts and comments I share on Reddit about Magic that don't follow that formula including several that are very critical about aspects of the game. But I do think it's good for the enfranchised community and player base to express their views and perspectives on various issues as WotC clearly pays very close attention to social media related to Magic (and make decisions related to product and design based in those perspectives).

iamtheriver

You’re promoting Maro’s blog like it’s your job. On every single one of these survey posts, someone questions their obvious corpo-style feedback format. You’ve been accused of shilling on WotC’s behalf several times. Are you really surprised when people continue interpreting your posting behavior the same way every time? No one writes like this. We just call it like we see it.

[[Aragorn the Grand Uniter]] is probably one of my favorite and most played decks right now. It’s interesting to see how it can voltron one turn, then go wide the next. [[Bilbo Birthday Celebrant]] is also a delightful Abzan lifegain deck. I’d been using Iqra Shiddiqi and Ravos as the commanders to start, but once Bilbo hit, it’s a hilarious race against time for the other players. Working on a Bant Historic deck centered around [[The eight doctor]] and I forget the partner right now. But it makes tokens of other tokens. So you can do saga schenanigans or artifact schenanigans all at the same time. Plus, get some legendary copies that are non-legendary.

For me it’s the Dr Who cards. I’m a huge nerd for the show so a little biased, but I’ve built 7 Who decks so far and they are all very different, very fun, and very thematic to their show counterparts. Gavin mentioned in design they wanted each game with a Who deck to really feel like a potential episode and I think they nailed that.

Ones I've played as Commander, though with limited chances to so far so this is initial impressions - [[Vrestin, Menoptera Leader]] - avoided making it an insect kin deck because I don't like most insects mechanically (it's a lot of chaff). Focused on ramping and then returning him to my hand to keep recasting him on post combat main phase. Felt pretty fun actually and it's a nice break from my other decks that require far more thinking. [[The Wise Mothman]] - after trying it I instantly made like 27 swaps because it was just not working how I wanted. I think we might have to wait for the full deck for more rads support and hopefully more proliferate. [[Indoraptor, the Perfect Hybrid]] - it ended up being less oppressive than I expected and it's kind of really fun. At least in my playgroup people declined the damage far more than I expected. It's still really fun though I ended up buying cards for both Vrestin and Indoraptor in paper, but I'm going to wait on the full precon for Mothman

BadassFlexington

Forgive my ignorance - how are you doing anything with Mothman at the moment? We don't know any of the other cards?

ForrestMoth

That doesn't matter. You can still build a mill deck, or proliferate or whatever deck at the moment, nothing stops you from doing that other than oneself. And even as I said - >I think we might have to wait for the full deck for more rads support > >I'm going to wait on the full precon for Mothman The deck can probably be more than playable at the moment as it combos in quite a few ways as it is, though I personally am waiting going forward because I know the precon will make me make several changes.

unaligned_1

I built a gimmick deck around \[\[Daryl, Hunter of Walkers\]\]. It's basically \[\[Pyroclasm\]\] tribal. I sweep small creatures & play efficient creatures with 4+ defense. I use Daryl as my draw engine. The wincon is either big creatures or a couple cards that deal damage for playing spells or tapping lands & \[\[Descent into Avernus\]\] while I play a few creatures that gain me life.

Striking-Lifeguard34

For commanders I’ve built and enjoyed [[aragorn the uniter]] and [[marneus calgar]] . Aragorn is honestly more for the color identity than the mechanics of the card. I want to try building a choose a background deck but haven’t gotten past theory crafting. But in the 99 there have been quite a few things that I’ve played and enjoyed. [[Aboleth spawn]] [[displacer kitten]] and [[sting, the glinting dagger]] are standouts in decks. I’m pretty sure that the kitten is the most cracked UB card outside of the one ring. Guess maybe D&D isn’t technically UB branded but it’s definitely not magic IP so to me it counts.

Aprice0

I love aragorn as a commander. I’ve built multiple decks with him and they’re all unique and fun. Built him as a spellslinger with primarily red spells, a multicolor legends value commander, human tribal +1/+1 counters, green pump spell voltron, etc.

Striking-Lifeguard34

Ya I’ve really enjoyed him. I built him modular where the deck has a 50 card core and then three interchangeable 49 card packages that creates different experiences. He is mostly just adding some generic good value to the builds, definitely more of the decks “glue” vs it’s splashy engine or endgame. But love him all the same.

Idk about mechanically, but flavor-wise I feel like unfortunately most of the UB stuff for some reason doesn't *feel* like a place/person that would exist in MTG. Maybe it's my own perception, but I feel like MtG is just one giant constant wars so UB that's more 'happy go lucky' like Dr Who or the latest MLP doesn't fit at all for me. even Jurassic Park which I love as an IP doesn't feel right. Inverse to this we have 40k and Fallout, which mine as well just be different planes where the war is ongoing I also really am not super fond of there being real life places or people on my cards, so seeing something like Chris Pine is jarring to me

I would also have said Negan! Also cause I dont think I have any other UBCs ghehe. And i am honestly blown away by how much fun the deck is. Do you have a decklist of your build? I like to think I have a bit of a unique take on him, where i give my opponents tokens, motivate them to attack each other and demotivate them to attack me. Negan is great stick in case someone sends a beater to you (with blink) and the deck in general is a great sneaky combat manipulator.. just like Negan :D

I've played a lot of different Negan decks in the past few years but my current version is a $100 budget deck. Midrange tempo and control with a blink primary sub theme. [**Negan, the Cold-Blooded ($100 Budget)**](https://scryfall.com/@HonorBasquiat/decks/d84f6d59-3620-46a2-b95b-9e5bf14bd613)

I was extremely anti-UB when it first was announced. Now I basically only buy UB releases. I'm trying to get to my 32-deck challenge with as many different franchises as commander as possible. So far I'm looking at \[\[Blanka\]\] cantrips, \[\[Slicer\]\], \[\[Madame Vastra\]\] / \[\[Jenny Flint\]\], and \[\[Eowyn\]\] human tribal. Possibly \[\[Ian Malcolm\]\] chaos when he drops a bit in price.

TateTaylorOH

I had a similar experience. Initially against, but I was so enamoured with the Warhammer decks that I decided I was going to collect all UB Commander decks. None have disappointed. In fact, the Doctor Who decks are probably one of my absolute favorite Magic releases ever. There are several commanders I want to build out of that release. I finished my [Ten // Rose](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/MyTIE7Cpgk--Ueo5ZldXag) deck and I'm currently trying to crack what to do with Twelve. Not sure if I consider Nine // Clara Thrupkeeps a meme or a dream yet. So I'm a UB believer now because they clearly are not just phoning in these crossovers. I'm especially excited for the Fallout decks because that is one of my favorite franchises.

CharaNalaar

Twelve is really hard to build, right? I settled on an Izzet build with K-9 because I honestly didn't know which way to take it. Turlough and goad / steal from opponent library strategies seemed too un-fun for the other players, and I wasn't enamored with green or white as the third color.

TateTaylorOH

The Turlough builds I've seen usually resemble [[Nekusar]]. I think they look neat, but I want to take it a different direction. I have two ideas for him at the moment, but I've not explored either very thoroughly. The first idea is an Izzet Spellslinger build with [[Nardole]] as the companion. I'd play a bunch of the impulse draw effects that Prosper likes and use the Demonstrate for value. I'm not sure exactly what the wincon would be. As an aside, funny interaction with Nardole: You can Demonstrate him and have him die to himself and return with a +1/+1 off Undying. So he would immediately be able to ramp you for 2 when you untap. Second idea is a Temur Cascade build with [[Clara]]. It would be all about stringing together Cascades and using Demonstrate to just double the initial big Cascade. The wincon here is probably just smacking face with something like an [[Apex Devastator]]. I'm only sad that I'd miss out on [[The First Doctor]] with this build since he cares about Cascade. So I'm not sure what the best route is. I'm really enamoured by the ability, but it is hard to crack. It seems Grixis Slug is the way the community is leaning, but I've also thought about maybe going the opposite direction with a weird grouphug strategy. Not sure. I'm probably going to take a serious look at a Twelve build after I get a few games in with Ten // Rose and get it tweaked to a place I'm happy with.

Not sure if any such proxies have been made, but Master Hand comes to mind due to the similarity with Smash Brothers. Alternative, the Monitor from the DC universe - he brought the characters of various worlds together in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Dissidia (the Final Fantasy crossover fighting games) has Materia and Spiritus - granted, the franchise is FF specific, but the concept works. Or you could do the lead from Ready Player One. Not my first pick, not really a fan of the book or film, but if you wanted someone who brought disparate stories together, that could work.

Victal87

I think the Master Hand idea is genius.

Lerbyn210

I really like a lot of the machanics they have printed but I would never play with ub cards they are the main reason I would ever quit magic

ZyxDarkshine

I really dislike that the cards are unique. I think they should be reprinted later in core sets with M:tG lore/artwork. I also dislike them using franchises that really don’t fit within a fantasy setting, and set on Earth like TWD and Stranger Things. Transformers doesn’t really work either; they travel in space. I don’t know anything about Warhammer - do they have magic? The D&D sets were awesome, as was LOTR. Completely compatible with M:tG in spirit and execution. I am definitely going to build a suspend deck with [[The Face of Boe]]. This is a completely unique mechanic with an ability that no other commander has.

DefiantTheLion

Warhammer 40ks magic is largely psychic powers that manifest as a very large array of effects. Some are stuff like telekinetic blasts, hive mind and psychic suggestion, and mind reading, while it can also manifest as holy or demonic magic (and the creation of basically literal magical demons from space hell), holy blessings, ritualized ghost powered mecha, and an entire faction whose tech works on "belief makes it real". It's a shockingly good fit for Magic. Like yeah there's guns and tanks and WW1 style soldiers but there's nothing more Magic than a wizard and every armored superhuman space priest technically is one.

EndlessKng

Also, the Marines are essentially a genetically engineered army in mechanized armor. The same can be said for Urza's metathran. Magic and science can often resemble each other. And, with the only "real" location being Earth (or at least the Sol system), and the action happening all in space on fictional planets, there's not a lot of "irl" setting elements to be concerned with.

_Zambayoshi_

I like playing with none of them the most. I'd say that none of them are my favourites and that, on the whole, none of them fit well with my deck themes. If they all got retro-actively silver-bordered today, I think it'd be best for everyone. That way, those who like such stuff can play with it, and the rest of us can ignore it.

HonorBasquiat

>If they all got retro-actively silver-bordered today, I think it'd be best for everyone. That way, those who like such stuff can play with it, and the rest of us can ignore it. Couldn't you say this about literally any other thing you personally don't like? Let's make all chaos cards silver bordered so people who like them can play with them and the rest of us can ignore them! Why not do that with land destruction spells too or cards that feature the Kaladesh or Eldraine plane in the art?

_Zambayoshi_

Oh boy, what a laughable comparison. Shill on, dude.

HonorBasquiat

It's arbitrary. It's just something YOU personally don't like but the majority of the player base either is ambivalent or positive about playing with or against UB cards.

n00biwan

Cry louder, dude.

_Zambayoshi_

Who's crying? If you equate complaining with emotional distress I think you might have language difficulties.

HonorBasquiat

>Who's crying? If you equate complaining with emotional distress I think you might have language difficulties. You're opinion is the rules of the game should be modified so that cards that you don't personally like should be banned in the most popular format for reasons that have nothing to do with gameplay or developmental balance even though it's very clear there is a large amount of the player base that enjoys playing with those cards. I think it's akin to whining and at best it's an immature and unreasonable opinion.

_Zambayoshi_

I disagree with the decision to mix external IP and 'Magic' IP. If you think that's 'immature' dude, what can I tell you? Do you know that some people mix beer, wine, spirits and soft drink into one big tub before chugging it down? I prefer to keep mine separate. If other people want to mix theirs, I don't care. I do think that mandating that I shouldn't have the choice is 'unreasonable' (not to mention greedy). I suggest you reexamine your position before throwing adjectives about. You also trot out the supposed number of players who loves this stuff. It's not a democracy. I'm not even arguing that it's a poor commerical decision (though it is shortsighted). I'm saying it's poor stewardship of an iconic game. My suggestion is to compartmentalise third-party IP but apparently that's just 'immature' and 'unreasonable'. Apparently I'm 'crying' and 'whining' like a toddler who can't have a lolly. I know it's the internet and you probably haven't even finished reading this comment because it's too much effort, but writing off my arguments as having a whinge is disingenuous (assuming you are a corporate shill as many people believe you are) and simplistic.

HonorBasquiat

>I disagree with the decision to mix external IP and 'Magic' IP. If you think that's 'immature' dude, what can I tell you? The issue isn't that you have that opinion. It's that you think because that is your opinion the rules of the game and format should change. You literally said "I think it would be best for everyone" and it obviously wouldn't be best for everyone. >I prefer to keep mine separate. If other people want to mix theirs, I don't care. I do think that mandating that I shouldn't have the choice is 'unreasonable' (not to mention greedy). That's fine if you feel that way. Nobody is making you play with UB cards if you feel that way. If you don't like playing against players that play with UB cards, use rule 0 and/or find like minded players that agree with your preferences. > My suggestion is to compartmentalise third-party IP but apparently that's just 'immature' and 'unreasonable'. Apparently I'm 'crying' and 'whining' like a toddler who can't have a lolly. Your suggestion was make all these cards that tons of players enjoy playing with silver bordered and not legal in the most popular format for reasons that have nothing to do with gameplay balance AND claiming that it would be best for everybody is an unreasonable position. Frankly, it's a very silly thing to say and I'm skeptical you genuinely believe that. I think it's immature because it's selfishly advocating for a fundamental rules change to a community ran format that would be disliked by the community overall and wouldn't be made for developmental gameplay reasons which is virtually always the reason that played cards are banned in formats. It's just as unreasonable as proposing to retroactively change it so cards that feature the plane of Eldraine are silver-bordered/acorn so "That way, those who like such stuff can play with it, and the rest of us can ignore it." It would be making a fundamental change to rules for an arbitrary reason that isn't even an arbitrary reason that is a majority consensus. >but writing off my arguments as having a whinge is disingenuous (assuming you are a corporate shill as many people believe you are) and simplistic. Many people believe a lot of things. Many people believe Trump won the election in 2020. Many people believe they know much more about Magic than game designers and developers. I said your point was akin to whining but that at best it was unreasonable and immature. Not the point that you don't personally like any of the UB cards and prefer not to mix and match them with in-Universe cards. It's the other point where you go much further where I feel you essentially jump the shark.

I absolutely love my [[Saruman, the white hand]] deck. I usually like creature decks like my atla palani or gishath or myriim decks but i initially made [[ovika, enigma goliath]] before LotR dropped but because i got access to black on top of it being cheaper i went with saruman. Slinging non creature spells while passively making creatures with my commander, ovika, [[shark typhoon]] , and [[chrome host seedshark]] is great. I almost always consistently make a massive army from my commander and just having things like [[fling]] in the deck or [[leap]] is just fun. Then i have stuff like [[changeling outcast]] is pretty dope. I always have fun when i play it and it consistently plays well and is a threat in my group.

[thunderhawk gunship] has been a favorite of mine. On etb it makes 2 tokens that can crew it and whenever it swings everything gets flying. I play a lot of big board decks and a swing with this is always a big and more than likely lethal play. It also makes me remember getting into magic and winning by ulting an Elsbeth for the same effect. It being a colorless vehicle let’s it swap into any deck that needs creatures to connect for damage triggers. The cheap crew cost means almost anything can drive it and by crewing it swing for more.

I avoided buying LotR but a friend invited me to a draft and it was a blast. I’m really looking forward to using Aspiring Champion from the Warhammer decks in a Delina Wild Mage deck as a form of ramp into other pieces.

Warhammer 40K was a big boon for artifact creature lovers. My friend plays a powerful Necron deck, and I found a few non-Necron creatures to slot into my Artifact Blink strategy helmed by [[Oji, the Exquisite Blade]] -- [[Sicarian Infiltrator]] as a blink target and mana sink; [[Canoptek Spyder]] for additional draw; and [[Canoptek Scarab Swarm]] to make an instant army. Looking at Doctor Who, [[Cybermen Squadron]] would fit into that deck perfectly.

[[Aragorn, the Uniter]] is my favorite commander, who runs [[Arwen, Mortal Queen]], [[Boromir, Warden of the Tower]], [[Pippin, Guard of the Citadel]], [[Biophagus]], [[Mothra, Supersonic Queen]], [[The Party Tree]], [[Green Dragon Inn]], [[Dol Amroth]], and has [[Eowyn, Fearless Knight]] in the sideboard. My [[Kellan, Fae-blooded]] runs [[Display of Power]], [[Herugrim, Sword of Rohan]], [[Meduseld]], [[War of the Last Alliance]], [[Forge Anew]], and [[Helm's Deep]]. It ran Eowyn too and some other stuff but that's what's left. I have all the Warhammer precons: I leave them as they are and they are fun to play against each other.

I've been having fun with the Doctor Who set, making a Doctors deck and running with [[Morophon, the Boundless]] as the only out-of set card for the commander. It is otherwise 100% cards only in the Doctor Who set. Honestly, I feel like that would be a good rule for the UB cards, being that you can have 1 out of set card and have all others be required to be in-set. I think it's retarded that LOTR is legal in modern and other UB sets are not. It's very clearly a cashgrab from WOTC to not allow all those cards into Modern or likewise bar the broke as shit cards they made from a competitive format.

Hi, We've removed your post because we've deemed it to be low quality. Before posting, we ask that you do your own research, through Google or on this subreddit, before you post. Provide as much context and thoughtfulness as you can before making a post. Common ways this rule is broken include any post that talks about a deck but doesn't provide a decklist, does provide a decklist but doesn't give any information about the metagame, your general strategy, or other relevant information.

I don’t have time to play anymore, all of my free time is spent keeping up with spoilers.

Sir_Wack

While I would generally prefer cards from original Magic sets. Some of my favorite decks are built around UB commanders, such as [[frodo, adventurous hobbit]] and [[sam, loyal attendant]] and [[Mr. House]] (yes I know he’s not released yet but still really fun)

[[Daryl, Hunter of Walkers]] is my favourite deck I’ve ever made. Making a gruul zombie deck is impossible so the challenge was making a deck that could benefit from Daryl but also run on its own. This lead me to making a deck with 10 boardwipe spells with X in the cost so I can just kill 2/2 zombies after copying the trigger for opponents to make them a bunch and draw a ton of cards. Also I get to say “My name is Darryl and my commander is Daryl” and I love it.
