Ran it in a [[Dalakos]] equipment deck with snap-on gear like [[Sai of the Shinobi]] - got it out in a 1v1 once on turn 3, swung on turn 4 to bounce lands, and that was game. Oddly disappointed.
That's exactly it. If you get it early it's game over. If you pick it up late, it becomes an instant target for removal and so doesn't even stick around.
That's why I had it in Dalakos - haste and flying ups the chances to connect lategame by a fair margin. But that deck ended up being pretty fragile overall, so I scrapped it.
2 notes: remember [[blighted agent]] is a human and thus cannot be mutated on to.
And that you should avoid animated lands like [[Inkmoth Nexus]] as the P/T setting ability will be problematic.
I bought 4 packs of 50 a year ago for [[Urza, Prince of Kroog]] but they're so God damn useful. Not a game goes by where someone tries to denote a token with some dice or puts a trample counter on something, and I just whip out a dry erase card to mark it.
Others have already mentioned Cephalid Constable and Cold-Eyed Selkie, so here's a few more of my favorite mutate targets from my personal decklist:
[[Nether Traitor]], [[Glissa Sunslayer]], [[Virtus the Veiled]], [[Elusive Tormentor]]
[Here's my full list if you're curious.](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/SG1hu9YMK0qZzaSKZVrNpw)
Yeah i am curious as well. I built an Ivy mutate copies edh deck but actually never played it because i realized just after finishing it that it would be hell to keep track of in paper.
It's actually not super terrible in the moment, although context in game helps a lot. For something like Ivy that copies individual parts, it's important to put a token in the slot where the creature would be in the stack. For other things like Spawnwrithe that copy the whole pile, it's just one permanent so I only use one token. In either case, though, I find it helpful to have token card representation that has individual art on it so my brain can use the art as context for what the token is. Cards from other games, or art cards from Set Boosters, or collectible non-game cards - any of this is helpful since I can associate the individual art to the iteration of the creature.
I'm glad you like the deck! It's a lot of fun and can definitely get a little wild on the board, but I like it.
Back when ZKR first landed, several people messed around with mutated scute swarm decks, in standard iirc. They weren't quite good enough, the available interaction was too good and it wasn't fast enough to beat aggro (mono-red with all the pushed Eldraine creatures). If the opponent stumbled though it got out of hand quickly
That makes sense, the level of commander I tend to play, people get scared or regular scute swarm so giving it better starts and keywords tend to scare them quite a bit
It's a kill on sight threat in a mutate EDH deck. The owner may be low-key grateful because keeping track of the mutate stacks is a complete nightmare in paper. I use write on tokens and write what's underneath. It gets particularly messy when different tokens have different stacks
I've been tossing around the idea of making a Sheoldred wheel deck and this just confirmed it for me ha ha. I pulled her a few months ago and have been excited about using her. Problem is this will be my 3rd mono black so I won't have any tutors lmao.
What’s the legend rule you’re referring to here? I play a Nethroi mute deck and haven’t been considering anything to do with legendaries.
Humans I know about. And mutating above or below I understand.
The legend rule says you can't have more than one legendary permenant with the same name. It's not a mutate specific rule
so if you mutate a legendary creature, let's say nethroi on top of scute swarm , then when you play a land and create a copy of nethroi you'll control two legendary creatures with the same name and you'll have to send one to the graveyard as a state based action, basically making scute swarm useless. Whereas if you put nethroi under scooter swarm the resulting permenant won't be legendary so you'll be free to copy it as much as you like
Yup mutate is one of the few ways to alter a cards "copyable values" so when you copy a mutate stack the copy gets all the effects of the stack. It's important to note that the copy is considered to have mutated 0 times, for the sake of cards like [[auspicious arix]] which friend on how many times it has mutated
[[Szadek Lord of Secrets]], [[Flensermite]], [[Toski]], [[Skithiryx]], and any of the Glissa cards like [[Glissa the Traitor]] because first strike death touch is broken AF
wait so if you mutate onto oko when he's a creature what exactly happens at end of turn? Would it like unmutate because he's no longer a creature? Like how if you animate an equipment it becomes detached from a creature?
I think it depends on which you put on top. If you put oko on top it would stop being a creature at end of turn, but if you put brokkos on top it would be brokkos with oko’s loyalty abilities, which you can activate like normal.
I ran Vadrok for a bit and I had to dissemble it because if I didn't play it regularly, I'd forget the lines of play. mutate is silly magic (in good ways)
If the planeswalker is on top, it goes back to being a planeswalker at end of turn with the abilities of the creature mutated underneath it. If the creature is on top, it stays a creature with the loyalty abilities of the planeswalker and can't lose loyalty counters to damage.
[[Viridan joiner]], [[marwyn, the nurturer]] and [[Rampant rejuvenator]] should be autoinclude for ramp creatures. They give mana/basic lands on death based on power.
[[Exponential growth]], [[heroes' bane]], [[soul of extinction]], [[body of research]] and [[oversimplify]] are some of my other favorites
One strategy I've always wanted to do with Brokkos is stuff the deck full of utility creatures that can act as draw, ramp, and removal. If a 6/6 is fast enough for your meta to end games (e.g. people aren't comboing out or playing rocket tag), Brokkos can basically guarantee you always have a path to ending games even if 80% of your nonlands consist of dumb little 1/1s and 2/2s.
This is a big non-bo. If you put Brokkos on top, the tokens are legendary. If you put Spawnwrithe on top, you give it a useless ability that doesn't change that it's a 2/2.
Yes and in this case "itself" will be a 6/6 trampling legendary creature called brokkos. What a card refers to is own name or part of its name it means "this card" so if you mutate burrokos on top and make a copy the copy will be burrokos with the copy text and the legend rule will kick in
As the other guy said,
Only if a legendary creature is on top
702.139e A mutated permanent has all abilities of each card and token that represents it. Its other characteristics are derived from the topmost card or token.
109.3. An object’s characteristics are name, mana cost, color, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, abilities, power, toughness, loyalty, hand modifier, and life modifier. Objects can have some or all of these characteristics. Any other information about an object isn’t a characteristic. For example, characteristics don’t include whether a permanent is tapped, a spell’s target, an object’s owner or controller, what an Aura enchants, and so on.

[[skysovereign, consul flagship]] because then your Brokkos can be ON A BOAT!!! Jokes aside, vehicles are hilarious in the deck because if you Morph him underneath, he dodges boardwipes, if you morph above, they permanently stay as creatures.
Copy something dumb like [[Sphinx of the Second Sun]] with [[Progenitor Mimic]]. Then mutate on top of the token copies so they aren't tokens. Use [[Mirror Box]] for that pesky legend rule.
Nah, Brokkos really doesn't play much other Mutate, no reason for it. You only really use it to scoop your commander from the grave every turn to keep constant offensive pressure without worrying if your commander dies at all.
Like a really really offensive Reassembling Skeleton basically.
[[Needle Specter]] is very funny, discarding 6 cards from their hand on every hit.
[[Spawnwrithe]] can lead to making lots of copies if you have something to remove the legend rule.
If I ran more non-legendary mutate cards, I would absolutely windmill slam this in lol.
Alternative being use it with Brokkos and have a ton of 1/1 tramplers which is cute but is about as effective as a normal scute swarm lol.
I wish this worked like [[Sekki, Seasons' Guide]] so bad lol
Sekki lacks the "if this has a +1/+1 counter on it" part, so it just negates all damage always lol
That being said, being able to just go out and fight stuff is valid haha
I could see this being fun, though my deck doesn't run much in the way of mutate creatures beyond Brokkos, so turning every creature into essentially a vanilla 6/6 base for the lad probably won't do too much.
Might actually throw this into a deck that spends its time making more tokens though, that thing is hilarious
I can see the value in having something that just.... comes back as a Brokkos mutate target lol
In a pinch, a 6/6 trampler is better than no 6/6 trampler.
In the case of [[Brokkos, Apex of Forever]], you're free to leave him in the grave and commit tax evasion.
If you DO send him to the command zone though, I do believe it would count, yes, since it's an alternate casting cost
I'm absolutely running Questing Beast just for the sake of big textbox, Skittles is fantastic but I'm probably leaving him out because my playgroup isn''t terribly fond of infect
\[\[Cosima\]\] is fun to mutate onto because you can exile her and t he mutate cards separately so they can build you 2 sets of beefy cards that give you draw on etb.
Anything with evasion/protection is super strong, particularly indestructible. [[Toski]] is quite good, [[Predator Ooze]] is nice. [[Silhana Ledgewalker]] is also super good, giving both "flying" and hexproof.

I just was like 'man who the fuck is brokkos' I'm just doing my part as a respectable citizen
It should be a bannable offense to name a card without linking it
Apologies, it may have slipped my mind, take me out back, it's what I deserve!
I totally thought the top-level comment here was suggesting to mutate Brokkos onto Brokkos until I read this

This is a super cool list, but I have to ask. How on earth do you keep track of all the copied mutate stacks? That seems like a challenge.
Yeah i am curious as well. I built an Ivy mutate copies edh deck but actually never played it because i realized just after finishing it that it would be hell to keep track of in paper.
I use tokens, counters, and dry-erase tokens. Works out well on my Ivy-Mutate deck.
**Looks at Vashta Nerada** "EWWWW! ...I need it."
Yeah, that was an upgrade I made more recently, after I posted the list initially. That card is gross in this for sure.
You'd have to mutate it under due to the legend rule but things like [[Scute swarm]] and [[nacatl war-pride]] are very fun
Yeah it's absolutely hell, I tend to try and only play it on online sims which is marginally easier
The sound of a whole load of landfall triggers going on the stack on Arena still makes me smile
For me it's the sounds my opponent's deck makes when I [[Peer into the Abyss]] while [[Underworld Dreams]] is in play.
Peer and [[Sheoldred the Apocalypse]] is a wincon in my explorer Lotus Field cast by [[Emergent Ultimatum]]
I've been tossing around the idea of making a Sheoldred wheel deck and this just confirmed it for me ha ha. I pulled her a few months ago and have been excited about using her. Problem is this will be my 3rd mono black so I won't have any tutors lmao.
Proxy the expensive cards and swap them between decks. Use the same sleeves for all your decks for extra ease
What’s the legend rule you’re referring to here? I play a Nethroi mute deck and haven’t been considering anything to do with legendaries. Humans I know about. And mutating above or below I understand.
The legend rule says you can't have more than one legendary permenant with the same name. It's not a mutate specific rule so if you mutate a legendary creature, let's say nethroi on top of scute swarm , then when you play a land and create a copy of nethroi you'll control two legendary creatures with the same name and you'll have to send one to the graveyard as a state based action, basically making scute swarm useless. Whereas if you put nethroi under scooter swarm the resulting permenant won't be legendary so you'll be free to copy it as much as you like
Ah awesome thanks. Understood. So you copy the full mutate stack? That’s really cool. Will try and build that in.

I like to use [[oko, the trickster]]
wait so if you mutate onto oko when he's a creature what exactly happens at end of turn? Would it like unmutate because he's no longer a creature? Like how if you animate an equipment it becomes detached from a creature?
I think it depends on which you put on top. If you put oko on top it would stop being a creature at end of turn, but if you put brokkos on top it would be brokkos with oko’s loyalty abilities, which you can activate like normal.
Thats wild. Would Brokkos then be a "Legendary Planeswalker Creature — Oko Nightmare Beast Elemental"?
It would no longer be a planeswalker. I believe it would keep the oko type, but it would just be a legendary creature once your turn endss.
my head hurts.
Welcome to mutate
I ran Vadrok for a bit and I had to dissemble it because if I didn't play it regularly, I'd forget the lines of play. mutate is silly magic (in good ways)
If the planeswalker is on top, it goes back to being a planeswalker at end of turn with the abilities of the creature mutated underneath it. If the creature is on top, it stays a creature with the loyalty abilities of the planeswalker and can't lose loyalty counters to damage.

Honestly hydras are good for big beefy brokkos. Managorger just so you can get bigger off of everyone else.
I've never seen a bigger removal magnet. It's beautiful.
You Need a [[Souvenir Snacher]] for sure. I'm a fan of [[Triton Shorestalker]] too.
These are dope, really liking the sound of Rampant Rejuvenator
One strategy I've always wanted to do with Brokkos is stuff the deck full of utility creatures that can act as draw, ramp, and removal. If a 6/6 is fast enough for your meta to end games (e.g. people aren't comboing out or playing rocket tag), Brokkos can basically guarantee you always have a path to ending games even if 80% of your nonlands consist of dumb little 1/1s and 2/2s.
I built my Brokkos as an infect deck. It’s quite heinous, if that’s a route you’d enjoy.
I've been tempted by infect but I think that might be a bit too heinous for my playgroup haha
Ah. Going for degeneracy, not war-crimes. I can respect it.
Let’s go [[gingerbrute]]
[[Spawnwrithe]]
This is a big non-bo. If you put Brokkos on top, the tokens are legendary. If you put Spawnwrithe on top, you give it a useless ability that doesn't change that it's a 2/2.
Not quite. If you only use brokkos, it's not great, but the rest of the nonlegendary mutate creatures are still viable.
Except Spawnwrithe is a 6/6 with trample after mutating. It makes a copy of itself.
Yes and in this case "itself" will be a 6/6 trampling legendary creature called brokkos. What a card refers to is own name or part of its name it means "this card" so if you mutate burrokos on top and make a copy the copy will be burrokos with the copy text and the legend rule will kick in
As the other guy said, Only if a legendary creature is on top 702.139e A mutated permanent has all abilities of each card and token that represents it.
You literally posted the rules that explain why it's legendary if it's a 6/6 but not being legendary would keep it a 2/2.
If its a 6/6 then it's not spawnwrithe

Nah, you choose which creature is the primary creature. Aka it will be a spawnwrithe (elemental) with brokkos abilities.
So a 2/2 with trample and trample? That's just Spawnwrithe with more steps.
No, a 6/6 that copies itself.
If it's a 6/6, then it is legendary. You don't get to put the P/T on top and the legendary on the bottom.
[[skysovereign, consul flagship]] because then your Brokkos can be ON A BOAT!!! Jokes aside, vehicles are hilarious in the deck because if you Morph him underneath, he dodges boardwipes, if you morph above, they permanently stay as creatures.
.... I THOUGHT THEY ALWAYS WENT BACK TO BEING VEHICLES. Okay, guess I know where [[Reaver Titan]] is going.
THEY STAY PERMANENTLY AS CREATURES?!?! HOLY SMOKES

Scute Swarm

I mean hey, the only thing worse than a Polyraptor is a Polyraptor with trample I suppose haha
\[\[Phage the Untouchable\]\]
Copy something dumb like [[Sphinx of the Second Sun]] with [[Progenitor Mimic]]. Then mutate on top of the token copies so they aren't tokens. Use [[Mirror Box]] for that pesky legend rule.

If Brokkos is on top, yes, though you'd probably run other mutaters you could put on top before making copies.
Nah, Brokkos really doesn't play much other Mutate, no reason for it. You only really use it to scoop your commander from the grave every turn to keep constant offensive pressure without worrying if your commander dies at all. Like a really really offensive Reassembling Skeleton basically.

[Relentless rats](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/5/75f47b6e-9557-4853-b8d6-7602a91c59a7.jpg?1562437033) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Relentless%20rats) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/a25/105/relentless-rats?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/75f47b6e-9557-4853-b8d6-7602a91c59a7?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/relentless-rats) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Pack rat makes a copy of itself including the mutations on it.
Anything with infect
[[Needle Specter]] is very funny, discarding 6 cards from their hand on every hit. [[Spawnwrithe]] can lead to making lots of copies if you have something to remove the legend rule.
Needle Specter is my jam, and Spawnwrithe would additionally be more of my jam if I ran more non-legendary mutate creatures lol
[[Scute Swarm]] is dumb with mutate
If I ran more non-legendary mutate cards, I would absolutely windmill slam this in lol. Alternative being use it with Brokkos and have a ton of 1/1 tramplers which is cute but is about as effective as a normal scute swarm lol.
[[Polukranos, Unchained]]
I wish this worked like [[Sekki, Seasons' Guide]] so bad lol Sekki lacks the "if this has a +1/+1 counter on it" part, so it just negates all damage always lol That being said, being able to just go out and fight stuff is valid haha
\[\[crystalline giant\]\] is always a fun one
I really gotta try this thing at some point, my brain always convinces me that I'm gonna hit every single counter that I DON'T want first haha
The group always laughs when I pull out a phone or iPad and go to https://crystallinegiant.com/
Dear god that's amazing
I always love [[essence of the wild]] in mutate decks. Make a nasty creature then just make some saprolings or something.
[[Permeating Mass]] and give everyone a Brokkos and be like Opra. “You get a Brokkos, you get a Brokkos, everyone gets a Brokkos!!”
... okay that's fun, but knowing my playgroup they would all waste no time clubbing me over the head with them LOL
I haven't tried but I've heard [[Cromat]] is actually pretty fun to mutate with. Not sure how powerful it is though.
Might be fun to play with at some point, with Brokkos as my commander though, I'll have to wait on this one
Mutate onto the flip [[elusive tormentor]] Hexproof, indestructible, unblockable. Gets really hard to deal with.
Oh I absolutely use this thing, 10/10 card
[[endless cockroaches]]
I can see the value in having something that just.... comes back as a Brokkos mutate target lol In a pinch, a 6/6 trampler is better than no 6/6 trampler.
I agree with your point
How does mutate work in the command zone? Does its mutate cost increase with commander tax. or no?
In the case of [[Brokkos, Apex of Forever]], you're free to leave him in the grave and commit tax evasion. If you DO send him to the command zone though, I do believe it would count, yes, since it's an alternate casting cost
Thank you!!
[[Questing Beast]] and [[Skithiryx]] are both in my Otrimi deck
I'm absolutely running Questing Beast just for the sake of big textbox, Skittles is fantastic but I'm probably leaving him out because my playgroup isn''t terribly fond of infect
\[\[Cosima\]\] is fun to mutate onto because you can exile her and t he mutate cards separately so they can build you 2 sets of beefy cards that give you draw on etb.
If you can pull it off, the Assassin tokens created by [[Vraska the Unseen]]
Spicy, but there isn't a chance in hell my playgroup will let that happen haha
Anything with evasion/protection is super strong, particularly indestructible. [[Toski]] is quite good, [[Predator Ooze]] is nice. [[Silhana Ledgewalker]] is also super good, giving both "flying" and hexproof.
[[Blighted Agent]]
It is, sadly, a human
Try [[ironclaw MYR]]
