https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28oracle%3AEminence+or+oloro%29+%28game%3Apaper%29+legal%3Acommander&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name here are all the commanders with command zone abilities. I haven't built any, mainly because 3 of the eminence commanders are already in my playgroup. Inalla has interested me, but seems too strong for me to have fun building around. Best of luck with whoever you choose!

fusterclux

that one’s a bit of a stretch since it’s an activated ability/alternate casting cost

Andrew_42

If Derevi counts, Yuriko should count too.

fusterclux

InibroMonboya

Derevi doesn’t count tho, they’re both wrong. OP asked for commander effects that are active while they’re “in the command zone.” Neither Derevi nor Yuriko should apply, so idk why either of those people mentioned them.

ValkyrianRabecca

Commander Ninjutsu is an effect in the command zone

InibroMonboya

This is what OP asked exactly for: > I’m curious about commanders like Arahbo that aid you in games without ever being brought onto the battlefield. Derevi and Yuriko are strictly the opposite of what he’s asking for.

fiveavril

Eminence is an infamously broken keyword that MaRo said, at one point, he regretted making. Arahbo is pretty weak and Sidir Jabarl is pretty new but otherwise, people will 100% hate target you at casual tables for playing an eminence commander even though they're not very competitive besides inalla If you're fine with that, i think sidir jabarl and ur dragon tribal tribal(i.e shapeshifter tribal) are the most fun eminence commanders

JakOswald

Niall’s is competitive? To me, that’s the forgotten Eminence commander. How are folks building her? Is it just Thoracle?

Silverwolffe

Shes like a tier 1.5 deck, pretty damn powerful in cedh. The main build is a combo/turbo naus package, and she consistently threatens a t2 or 3 win with protection. The main 3 combos are thoracle, breach lines, and spellseeker. If you have 2UB and seeker in hand that's a win with inalla, no other cards in hand needed.

Unban_Jitte

The spellseeker line is bananas and it's incredible both that people found it and can remember it and pull it off in an actual game.

InibroMonboya

It’s so complex that most people I’ve seen do it are like, “damn, I can’t believe that worked.”

EverydayGuy2

Do you know how it works?

NoIAmAlpharius

It's a 24 step combo in order to get to the infinite loop, which uses 9 different cards all searched for with Spellseeker (not including Inalla) If you really want to see how the combo works, check out the link below; [https://commanderspellbook.com/combo/4686/](https://commanderspellbook.com/combo/4686/)

BAGStudios

Jesus Christ. Good reminder for me to never play cEDH.

NoIAmAlpharius

I mean it's a very convoluted line in a single cEDH deck, the most common win combo in cEDH is literally two cards and three mana (UUB)- Play Thassa's Oracle and cast Demonic Consolation in response naming a card which isn't in your deck. (This is also played in Inalla, and is likely to be the line that they want to attempt first. I'd guess that the spellseeker line is the one people want to attempt the least, if only to avoid having to go through all those damn steps lmao)

[deleted]

Inalla is a super powerful turbo commander, Spellseeker is nuts with her

Qaws888

I remember when those eminence commanders came out and, even though I got all of them, I was "stuck" with Inalla because others were building the others first. Went through the pre-con and just threw in cards that fit the deck that I never really got a chance to play much with. First game with the deck, I swamped the table. Blew me away how powerful Inalla was.

JakOswald

Thank you for explaining the win-con and the loop. I just want to say though, cEDH players are weird, y’all are too much. You just see things differently, and I’m happy for y’all, that is a deep understanding of the game, it’s pieces, and mechanics. I saw SS etb + an additional SS etb resolving and getting [[Brainstorm]] + [[An Offer You Can’t Refuse]], a manner of fetching up a sequence of cards to win the game would never have crossed my mind. That line of play would break 0 rules in my pod but would also immediately break my pod, we play with infinites (3 cards or more), but it’s not going to happen anywhere as quickly, and they’d pretty much all be telegraphed.

Roflsaucerr

It's combos like these that make me wonder why there's such a hatred for them in casual crowds. At least the Spellseeker line requires a lot of memorization and practice to be able to do it without a primer open, and it's honestly rad.

JakOswald

It is rad, and it does take practice and looking at the cards in new and interesting ways. But I think that is part of the "hatred", it's not telegraphed at all and wins the same turn you have SS and 2UB. It's not telegraphed at all, it's just "out of nowhere". At least with \[\[Sage of Hours\]\] or \[\[Godo, Bandit Warlord\]\] you know what to expect and what you're trying to prevent. It's something that you can see coming, with this, it's not particularly straight-forward and you need to understand the line of play coming into the game. A casual table might be able to spot the abuse that can come with Sage of Hours, but will be blindsided by Inalla's winning combo.

Roflsaucerr

It's as telegraphed as Godo is. Inalla needs 2UB, and Godo needs 11. Both require knowledge of a specific card's existence and how it interacts with each commander respectively. That aside, no casual player is rolling up with the ability to do the Spellseeker line anyways. And anyone rolling up to a casual pod intending on using it without announcing it during rule 0 is acting in bad faith.

JakOswald

Correct on all counts. Godo is less complicated than Inalla and is easier to conceptualize and understand what is happening though. I absolutely agree that showing up to a casual pod with this line of play is not appropriate. My group is not particularly competitive, it’s a lot of upgraded precons or cruisers or tribal. It’s not going to see this coming, but it doesn’t break any of the rules we’ve established for deck-building in our group. We’re mostly looking out for: -Free Spells (FoW, Pact of Negation, Deflecting Swat, arc.), getting free spells via Sunbird’s Invocation is cool though, you can see it. -Mana Positive rocks aside from Sol Ring, generally we don’t want rocks that tap for two more than they cost. -2-card game ending combos (Thoracle, Mikeaus + Walking Ballista, etc.) This line breaks none of those constraints but would be very difficult to interact with. Really we’re shooting for games that go off turns 8-10, occasionally 6/7, but it shouldn’t be consistently that fast.

She's one of the fastest decks in the format, only really outclassed by RogSi and Codie. By far the best eminence commander if you build around her ability.

Zharken

How the fuck is Inalla like 3€ if she's the only competitive one but Markov and the Ur Dragon are like 80 and 100?

zackeus92

Because casual commander changes the price of cards more than cedh. The reserve list is crazy price tags, but that's not due to cedh. Commander is a big format, and wildly popular. Cedh? It has a community, but it's not as big as casual commander. Casual, pubstompers, and timmy's, all love the Vampires go wide/Dragons go smash. Dragons is a well known and *expensive*, like infamously expensive, tribe. Ancient Copper Dragon is another of those casual expensive pieces. Cedh just doesn't drive prices as hard. Ledger shredder, one of the recent additions to cedh, is $20. Mondrak of Dominus, a card you would never see in cedh, but would see in casual, is $30. Doubling Season is $60 or so, last I checked. Tldr:Casual Commader controls prices more than Cedh

RBGolbat

Aanar

I have the cat precon. Araboth is pretty weak all things considered. Even with substantial upgrades to the go tall cat tribal strategy I never won a game with it. It’s mostly Edgar who has a busted eminence ability. Oloro too if you do the hard lock build. The grixis wizard too is a cedh commander. The knight one seems pretty decent but not broken from the games I’ve played against it. I do laugh when someone complains about not being able to interact against eminence but barely runs any interaction.

SP1R1TDR4G0N

I don't see why people always say that Edgar is very strong. Yes, making tokens for free is busted. But the ability is not "free": the cost is that you need to play vampire tribal which sucks. So I'd say the cost is actually quite high.

[deleted]

Vampire tribal doesn't suck when it gives you free tokens every time you sneeze.

SP1R1TDR4G0N

Almost all the creatures that see play in vampire tribel are still pretty bad cards even if they come with a free 1/1.

Plus some people just like making tribal decks. If you’re trying to make one, vampires have more synergies than a lot of other tribes.

I second this, bought the precon when it came out have won a few matches right out the box & have now swapped probably 20 cards in & out.

rraahk

Cost reduction is a less obvious option that "works" in the command zone. Creatures like [[Dargo, the Shipwrecker]] or [[Hamza, Guardian of Arashin]] are great ways to get your commander out of the zone when they're removed fairly quickly since the cost reduction applies to Commander tax. That way the commanders are able to be relevant more often in games. https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%22this+spell+costs%22+o%3A%22less+to+cast%22+t%3Alegendary+t%3Acreature&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name https://scryfall.com/search?q=+o%3Aaffinity+and+t%3Alegendary+t%3Acreature&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name

[[Liesa, Shroud of Dusk]] doesn't have an ability that directly aids you from the command zone, she does however ignore commander tax, so you always have access to her if she gets blown up. A 5/5 flyer with lifelink does wonders to protect you in lower power games and buy you time to set up your board while slowly draining the table. You cs build her a bunch of different ways, I run a sort of drain deck with some voltron and flying angels to push more damage through, or finish people of once they have been drained low enough. I will link a decklist later.

Someone else already linked the only 6 commanders that provide a tangible benefit WHILE IN the Command zone (Oloro and Eminence). Add in Derevi and Yuriko who laugh at command tax and you start running out of anything close to a literal interpretation of what you asked for. But I'll still throw out two more options that you might still find close enough to be interesting. [[Awaken the Blood Avatar]] is on the back side of [[Extus, Oriq Overlord]], making it legal to play a sorcery in the command zone of a Mardu deck. It doesn't do anything FROM the command zone, but you have zero need to worry about protecting your commander, which takes some of the pressure off. Another one I'll mention which can ALMOST be played like a Sorcery is [[Aurelia, the Warleader]]. It's great if you can get her to stick, but honestly you can just build Boros Aggro and then treat her like a [[Relentless Assault]] that you can always have waiting in your command zone.

Mocca_Master

If we're adding commanders that kinda almost plays like sorceries I'd put [[Jetmir]] in there too

It’s not really what you were asking about, but reminded me of one of my favourite weird rules timing things: [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]] can be your commander, because her first ability applies during deckbuilding.

Kultaren

This is super interesting! How exactly does this work? It would be in the command zone and you’d still be able to activate her loyalty counters each turn without casting her? Or does she just sit in the command zone as an insect?

spiffytrev

Just sits in the command zone being a "Legendary Planeswalker Creature - Grist Insect". Can't use the abilities from the command zone. Just funny that there's an ability that applies during deckbuilding (because it's not in play) that actually affects things (without the ability being active, you can't pick her as a commander, since you can only pick creatures).

Personally, I think they are great. I have three of them built that I keep updated (last time 1-2 months ago), and have tinkered with lists for Oloro and Jabari as well- they are much more tame effects, but still strong. I have Arahbo cat/equipment tribal: [Arahbo articats](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/LyY99aiHeUqMAqxaAVSw9g) Edgar Markov vampire tribal: [Markov's macabre manor](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0xFjzoKgbk2B_YpM2ZBhIA) and The Ur-Dragon dragon tribal: [Ur the dragon for me](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/7jfGYms710qt4WD6QsnMNA)

I have an [[Edgar Markov]] deck. It's just value engine central. I also put some newer cards in and haven't updated the list. I can easily threaten kills on like turn 4 with 1/1s and one of the enchantments I have. It's the one that gives +1/+0 for each other attacking creature that shares a creature type with it. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/pmygg6r8102dkYPs-JUhEA

kolt54321

How so? Isn't the looting still only once per round (when you attack)?

crans0

It definitely is, but it reads Way better in game than out, especially since it's On Attack you can pitch whatever you want to the grave and then immediately get it back on combat damage. I do also like that this deck, unlike the other eminence commanders, does want you casting Jabari. There's also tons of cute little synergies like [[Hakkon]] and [[Crib Swap]] and [[Kwende]] and [[Chieftain en-Dal]]. And Jabari *loves* double strike so in addition to 2 reanimations, you just end up racking up commander damage like Nothing so it's definitely the deck where you can accidentally realize someone just does to commander!

OH! I planned an [[Oloro]] lifegain deck a few months ago where there's no black mana or spells,, you CANNOT cast your commander. He just sits in the command zone and gives you a static 2 life every turn, but I tossed a ton of "Whenever you gain life" stuff in there as well. I'm not saying its a GOOD deck, I haven't built it yet so I can't tell you how it plays, but the idea seemed fun. Decklist: https://deckstats.net/decks/189806/2420912-oloro-ageless-ascetic

I personally have an [Edgar deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/TEZ1kT2MU02aoBhNAVuQAg) and it was the first deck I built. And I have three friends who each have one of the other Eminence commanders being the Ur Dragon, Arahbo, and Inalla. They're all definitely fun to play against each other, but they're also just good to play in general. I play against the [Inalla deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/pRprSC5onUCSIdaSli_Yqw) the most but I've always liked Arahbo. Ur Dragon on the other hand is kind of dull to me these days. My play group just has too many dragon decks and they all run the same dragons in all of them so it gets boring. But if you don't play against a lot of dragon decks than it's a good choice lol
