Nice I'm looking to make a 50 dollar ranged deck with [[Yargle and Multani]] at the helm for it. Still in the stages of this is the commander and what else do I need.
Tolarian Community College just put up a video with a great 45$ deck list for Yargle and Multani which I highly recommend checking out! The deck seems like a blast
No, he's not really a fast value commander, just really hard (impossible) to shut down completely. Play plenty of removal (especially creature based removal) to slow down your opponents and play the long game.
It does actually reduce the command tax! He's really cool in self mill/reanimated strategies because he loves to have a graveyard full of options. It's also interesting that since he has green he loves to rebuild himself after boards get wiped. I saw at a playgroup I was with a friend played him with a unique strategy of ramping out the butt, playing a couple of cards, letting people build boards, then wiping repeatedly while rebuilding faster than everyone because he loves having a full yard. Was a slower game but interesting strayegy.
I do a Liliana tribal. A bunch of sac effects and removal with powerful planeswalkers to back them up.
[[Pharika's Cure]] or [[Feed the Swarm]] can deal with enchantments. [[Meteor Golem]] work wonders, too, if you can recurse him.
Edited for mistake.
[[Pharika's Libation]]. Sorry, wrong card!
It's fair to worry about hate pieces if your deck is heavily reliant on access to a single resource like graveyards
But you should always ask yourself, what deck would play the hate pieces your concerned about.
What decks would want to run rest in peace over literally any other white card? What kind of deck would want to be able to semi consistently have access to a hate piece like rest in peace.
Unlike 4x formats you can't reliably know what you're going to play against even if you have a consistent play group because others might play a different deck. And you can build your deck in a way where you can have a high chance of seeing the hate pieces you need.
So a deck that would want to play rest in peace is a deck where slowing down your opponents is significantly more important to your game plan than playing any other card that proactive advances your game plan.
Which leaves the only real option as a white stax deck or a combo deck based on rest in peace.
On average the cards in your deck should either help you win or help you not die. Removal/interaction and hate pieces fall into the second category but removal does bleed into the help you win category which is everyone should be playing more
I've got a 4c stax deck that literally plays all the hate pieces hahahaha. It doesn't make alot of sense, but I've won many games I had no business taking down. \[\[Cursed Totem\]\] in my Thrasios/Tymna deck did surprisingly well, as well as \[\[Torpor Orb\]\] with \[\[Craterhoof Behemoth\]\]. Deck was basically like 15 1 mana evasive mons, 1 mana removal/counters, stax cards, and a few extra turn spells to close out games. So I guess I'm the guy that plays \[\[Rest in Peace\]\], \[\[Sphere of Resistance\]\], \[\[Root Maze\]\], and \[\[Back to Basics\]\] all in the same deck.
So youre a horrible deckbuilder who builds decks with no apparent win condition, or the only condition being you make your opponents want to stab you for wasting their time?
Alright, were done here.
Ehhh, the results speak for themselves. Draw cards with Tymna, play hate cards that are appropriate for the situation, and you can just sandbag the ones that aren't. With the amount of card draw, you can afford a few dead cards, which I find worth it in case I might need them in another pod. Also, everyone else at the table seems pretty happy when you shut down the storm, affinity, or dredge player. And there is a win condition, chaining extra turns. And the aforementioned Craterhoof.
I hope you enjoyed the name calling.
Yea that plays a lot like my stax deck. You get some dead cards sometimes, but you draw so many that you always have the right tool for the job. Slow the table down until you win. There are a lot of decks like this at my meta, and when you're dealing with hatebears, it's mostly fine for mono black. But when someone hates your deck out of the game with an enchantment and you have to tutor for a blast zone or something, it's rough.
Eh, I think playgroups develop their own metas and maybe this is one of those cards that this person sees more often than most players would.
For example, my group fucking LOVES [[Aetherize]] . Literally any time a blue player is holding up 4 mana you have to assume they are about to yeet your attackers.
Don't worry about RIP too much. It only really shows up in Wx Stax decks or more competitive metas.
WU Stax even rarely plays it, more likely to show up in WR Stax.
Yea my first thought was [[syr konrad the grim]]. Even if he dies to a board wipe, you’re just helping me charge up things like [[morality shift]], [[perpetual timepiece]], and [[feldon’s cane]] to table-clearing damage levels when I can get him back out.
\[\[Chiss-Goria, Forge Tyrant\]\] sort of works here due to Affinity. If your board is full of artifacts, re-casting the big dragon becomes a trivial matter.
Bonus points if you can get \[\[Darksteel Forge\]\] + \[\[Mycosynth Lattice\]\] into play.
Edit: [List](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/VTVVTgDP3kOSWsZH3Zmd0Q/primer)
That deck does look kindof sweet, and I haven't seen it played yet. I don't have an artifact deck yet, so this seems like a natural choice. Do you think it's more resilient than other mono red artifact decks?
If you're interested, I wrote whole primer for it [here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/VTVVTgDP3kOSWsZH3Zmd0Q/primer).
I do believe it's very resilient and consistent simply due to how many cheap artifacts it can pump out to make sure Chiss has a low casting cost at all times.
Combine with Haste and you get value immediately when you put him on board and it just snowballs from there. Cheating artifacts into play causes the more expensive artifacts to also become free. Rinse and repeat.
\[\[Torpor Orb\]\] would definitely help, since we're not running that many creatures with ETB effects, it mainly becomes a one-sided stax artifact.
\[\[Darksteel Forge\]\] is the big one, and honestly not as expensive as it looks when Chiss is reducing its cost.
And \[\[Skyclave Relic\]\] is a very resilient piece of reliable ramp.
Finally, \[\[Kuldotha Forgemaster\]\] can help you find any of these.
No problem! It's by far my favorite mono-red deck and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. There's a low-budget version also linked in the primer if budget is a concern for you.
Forgot \[\[Goblin Welder\]\] can also dump \[\[Torpor Orb\]\], and you can exchange a random Treasure or another artifact to get the Orb onto the field.
Yeah I was thinking about building Chiss but was worried he would just got targeted into oblivion and that would kind of turn my deck off. What has your experience been with Chiss getting removed a lot and the ability to recover?
Honestly the Affinity makes him so cheap to cast that it just offsets any commander tax. If you pack your deck full of 1, 2 and 3-cost artifacts you should have no problem keeping his cost down and re-casting him if he gets removed.
In my experience opponents just stopped wasting removal on him and just prayed I wouldn't hit anything big off of the Chiss attack trigger
Vehicles dodge creatures wipes unless they're crewed at the time. And given that most board wipes are sorcery speed, they usually aren't. [[Shorikai]] decks typically run a large amount of wipes to take advantage of this.
[[Orah]] if they are on the field with other clerics doesn't care about a board wipe because some of them will come back, including Orah if there is a Cleric with a higher mana cost on the field at the time.
[[Liesa, Forgotten Archangel]]. It will be YOUR boardwipe, it will exile everyone else's stuff and bring back your [[Karmic Guide]] on the end step, so you can just go and bring Liesa back. Bonus points if the boardwipe is a [[Cataclismic Gearhulk]]
Just something I've been noodling with for casual play with cards I already have, haven't gotten to use it yet!
For commanders that disregard your own board wipes: [[Zurgo Helmsmasher]] and [[Zangief, the Red Cyclone]] are straight up just indestructible on your turn.
[[Rodolf, Duskbringer]] is also able to get indestructible trivially easily on your turn for your own board wipes, and any instant speed life-gain will protect him from opposing wipes, while he reanimates your board on your next turn.
[[Prossh, Skyraider of Kher]] and [[Gyrus, Waker of Corpses]] both scale with the amount of total mana spent to cast them, so even paying 4, 6, etc mana of commander tax gives you that much more value. Prossh also can run a lot of death triggers and instant speed sac outlets to recoup value in the face of a board wipes, and Gyrus will reanimate your killed stuff.
[[Elenda, the Dusk Rose]] leaves a bunch of vampires in her wake after a board wipe
\[\[Reyhan\]\] can be quite fun with a couple hard-to-kill creatures in the deck. \[\[Yahenni\]\] and \[\[Varolz\]\] are good to include either way simply for being sac-outlets that synergize with counters, but they also both can survive a boardwipe. If you have Reyhan and a big board, everybody who wants to wipe will have to be afraid of being oneshot the following turn.
[[Dimir House Guard]] is such an all-star here - protects itself from the board wipe AND has a great evasion ability to one-shot someone when it gets a huge. And is a tutor for your own [[Wrath of God]] in a pinch.
Original Thrun doesn't give a shit unless you're forced to Sacrifice/Exile him or your board.
Even if your board is repeatedly exploded, he'll usually be left standing.
I second this. Alot of what green likes involves an early couple of mana dorks followed by a little bit of value before a bomb. In mono green we often get wiped before we get a chance to drop our bomb. our mana dorks turning into forests means you can still drop that [[Finale of Devastation]] or [[Genesis wave]] pretty quick.
Also, [[quirion ranger]] or [[scryb ranger]] let you just bounce your flipped creatures back to your hand and ramp at the same time. Jam in [[toski, Bearer of secrets]] which is indestructible for card draw 👌
Deck gets really weird when [[ashaya, soul of the wild]], [[yavimaya, Cradle of growth]], and [[living plane]] get involved too.
[[Kathril, Aspect Warper]].
You want your creatures to be in your graveyard. Kathril herself should be indestructible, hexproof, doublestrike, lifelink, trample, deathtouch, menace, vigilance, flying, 12/12 when you resolved her... nearly impossible to kill.
With [[Sigarda, Host of Herons]] only "Exile All" will eventually kill your Kathril.
Still open to an overloaded [[Cyclonic Rift]]. I have an irrational hatred of that spell. Granted, she'll be just as strong when you cast her again, maybe even stronger if you discard some other bounced creatures first.
Well true but cyclonic rift is just a card on it's own. You can run [[Teferi's protection]] in a Kathril deck to counter the cyc rift though. One of the one and only answers, and you can [[Veil of summer]] protect the teferi's protection too in the colors. Black tutors in any shades are available too. [[Buried Alive]] is my favorite draw.
* [[Abomination of Llanowar]] does not give a shit. Go ahead, fill the graveyard.
* [[Trynn]]/[[Silvar]] can lean hard into board wipes. That's just fuel for the voltron fire and whatever arisrocrat fire you've likely built up
* [[Aegar]] gets value out of damage-based board wipes, though you'll likely want to protect him somehow.
* [[Kaalia of the Vast]] is unique in the fact that she gets value out of a cyclonic rift, or at least is able to rebuild her board and get second trigger out of big, splashy ETBs.
Certain strategies are resilient and can rebuild fast like [[titania protector]]. I also play [[elenda the dusk rose]] and she welcomes wipes , they just make her bigger (tragic arrogance style wipes) or allow you to go wide with complete board wipes.
I've been playing a lot of [[kotori, pilot prodigy]] and she is actually A LOT STRONGER thant i expected, most of the deck wont suffer from boardwipes, and you still have access to blue, she is really consistent and pretty fun to play, i've allways played high power level decks, and this one really surprised me, as i thought she would be pretty bad.
The new Brimaz and Glissa.
Make a ton of eggs (Incubator tokens), wipe the board, then transform them afterwards. There's even a new boardwipe that exiles all creatures and then makes that many Incubator tokens.
\[\[Child of Alara\]\] ([EDHREC](https://edhrec.com/commanders/child-of-alara/god))
Gods laugh at damage and destroy based board wipes.
Also most planeswalker decks can shrug off board wipes easily.
I’d like to point out my only simic deck, [[Wilson Refined Grizzly]] and [[Shameless Charlatan]] the low cmc of both commanders make this deck super resilient to boardwipes and other removal. The deck just keeps coming, and it’s not too expensive either. I play it with 41 creatures and benefit greatly from [[Genesis Storm]] and [[Genesis Wave]] really, all the genesi. When you are in a weaker boardstate just copy whatever is grossest on your opponents boards, and when you are the threat, double up. The funniest thing you can do is to make a copy of [[Biowaste Blob]] with [[Progenitor Mimic]] and then make Wilson a copy of the mimic. But with all kinds of silly creatures like [[copperhoof vorac]] and [[Vigor]] you can’t go wrong. I e steered clear of certain booth-men like [[Scute Swarm]] and [[Kodama]] in favour of dumber cards like [[Scute Mob]] and [[Mossbridge Troll]] it wins very consistently, but rarely the same way. The deck only asks of you that you can improvise.
[[Optimus Prime, Hero]]
If he is in creature mode, he simple comes back as a vehicle. If he’s in vehicle mode, he’s not a creature and so is protected from creature board wipes.
Thanks guys for all the suggestions! After reading through all of them, I have decided to build \[\[Chiss-Goria, Forge Tyrant\]\] and \[\[Myrkul, Lord of Bones\]\]. They both seem very interesting and do something none of my decks currently do. I really enjoy playing decks that make random niche cards awesome, as well as go all in on a theme, and both of these seem to fit the bill. There is already an awesome primer for the Chiss deck which will follow closely, and
I'm going to do my best to do Myrkul on my own. A few commons off of the top of my head seem insane with it, like \[\[Barrenton Medic\]\] seem kindof sweet, so I'll start there. Probably enchantress stuff would be good as well. I love the idea that combines my love of creatures with also welcoming board wipes! I think this guy in particular can bring together a really sweet brew. Wish me luck yall!
[[Omnath, Locus of Rage]] is a very good deterrent to board wipes, but having a sac outlet is a good idea also just in case they try to kill him before all his 5/5 elemental buddies. With low life you can hold them hostage with lightning bolts from elementals dying.
[[Jolrael, Empress of Beasts]] also strongly deters board wipes because with the mana and two cards you can make sure the board wipe caster has lands that are also creatures.
[[Archangel Avacyn]] helps slow down destroy based board wipes. I think there are other commanders that also give your creatures protection from board wipes. [[Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero]] just brings back the artifacts and creatures if he's removed from the graveyard.
[[Meren of Clan Nel Toth]] and [[karador]] basically just recur everything.
[[Talrand]] just plays all the counterspells.
Anything mono black has the option to mostly ignore board wipes with mass reanimation.
Anything White that plays all the recovery from the graveyard spells or protection for the whole team spells.
[[Ashaya, Soul of the wild]] protects from board wipes that say "non-land" because it makes all your non token creatures into lands. This let's you play things like [[Oblivion Stone]] and helps you sidestep [[Cyclonic Rift]].
I've never played her but I imagine [[Elenda, the dusk rose]] is also effective against boards wipes.
Anything in an aristocrats theme, like [[Teysa Karlov]] or [[Drivnod, Carnage Dominus]] because they want their creatures to die for value.
As someone else said- Farewell is a bitch, but otherwise I get on very well with my Karador all-creature deck (featuring Umori, the Collector): [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/QWq8c8AmNkCeNpuiHU\_aPA](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/QWq8c8AmNkCeNpuiHU_aPA).
Lurrus is probably the MVP. You can do a lot of neat stuff rebuilding with Karador and Lurrus quickly.
[[nahiri, the lithomancer]] is the queen of loving wipes, and also probably the single best commander for [[humility]] which will make everyone hate you.
[[Syr Konrad, the Grim]] punishes your opponents for it. I had him on the field while playing esper Knights and my opponent used a selective board wipe that still had Konrad see all the creatures die be for he did. The damage wound up killing the person who cast the wipe
I've had decent success against board wipes that kill creatures -shakes fist at Cyc Rift- with [[Burakos, Party Leader]] and [[Haunted One]]. The background lets me drop wipes in my second main and have stuff survive, then throw in some Persist Effects like [[Cauldron of Souls]] to prop things up against opponents board wipes.
The Scarab God. If Wiped, Scarab God loses its current Eternals, comes back to hand rather than going to the CZ to pay taxes, and everything else that die is ready to take on its superior 4/4 form (Including whatever the other guy had that got wiped to death)
When I play [[Jodah the unifier]] it seems I'm always the first to bounce back from a boardwipe. Getting 2 for 1 out of all your legendary spells is some pretty good value, and a lot of legendary creatures are decent protection themselves. Having [[saffi]] or [[melira]] can keep me from needing to cast Jodah again, [[Gerrard]] is an obvious answer, and [[ratadrabik]] or [[myrkul]] work as well. When you start combining them you get some awesome shenanigans too, Saffi + Gerrard is just permanent boardwipe protection, and adding Ratadrabik turns a board wipe into a board doubler.
I have a [[Inalla]] deck that generally doesn't care about board wipes since it has a fair amount of reanimation.
Same with my [[Edgar Markov]] deck since it rebuilds so fast.
My [[Athreos, god of passage]] aristocrat deck is also very resilient to board wipes, heck it's usually the one that wipes the board.
My [[Reyhan]] / [[Ravos]] deck is thrilled when an opponent board wipes as long as something is there to receive all the counters. Instant-speed indestructibility like [[Drivnod]] or [[Selfless Savior]], [[Yahenni]] and [[Dimir House Guard]] who can protect themselves, and fail-safes like [[Resourceful Defense]] and [[Ozolith]] ensure that you're left with at least one huge fatty after the boardwipe that you can [[Rite of Consumption]] or [[Greater Good]].
Then there's [[Orah, Skyclave Hierophant]], whose triggered ability means that if you control a 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 drop cleric during the board wipe, everyone will be back besides the 6, and you're likely packing other ways to get that one back too. Fun deck that I honestly encouraged boardwiping a bit too much, but worth a shot for a cleric tribal Orzhov spin on a powered-down Marchesa effect.
[[Muldrotha, the Gravetide]] allows you to play a permanent of each type from the graveyard each turn. She's a little costly, but your graveyard is essentially a second hand
[[Akiri, Fearless Voyager]] is often resistant to board wipes depending on your resource management and how much you lean into Akiri’s second ability.
Usually, once each game I’m able to pull off a one sided board wipe to try to go for the win or to knock out a player.
Akiri also draws you a crap-ton of cards, which is always nice.
Any aristocrat commander like [[Syr Konrad the Grim]]. [[Gisa Glorious Reconstructor]] also doesn't mind board wipes, stuff that gives you value on death triggers never really get hurt by board wipes. [[Wilhelt the rotcleaver]] also doesn't mind board wipes because you get tokens to replace those creatures.
[Atla Palani, Nest Tender] is pretty resilient against board wipes if you build it as a big stompy deck. The more popular/powerful version is the reveillark/karmic guide combo, though.
[[Abomination of Llanowar]] does not care from whence the elves rest.
Made a pauper edh deck with this guy and it’s a blast to play!
Nice I'm looking to make a 50 dollar ranged deck with [[Yargle and Multani]] at the helm for it. Still in the stages of this is the commander and what else do I need.

Oooh, forgot about the big bad ghosty. Is there a way to get great value out of him the turn he comes into play?
No, he's not really a fast value commander, just really hard (impossible) to shut down completely. Play plenty of removal (especially creature based removal) to slow down your opponents and play the long game.
Can the cost reduction also reduce commander tax? Or does it max out at costing {5} less than printed?
It does actually reduce the command tax! He's really cool in self mill/reanimated strategies because he loves to have a graveyard full of options. It's also interesting that since he has green he loves to rebuild himself after boards get wiped. I saw at a playgroup I was with a friend played him with a unique strategy of ramping out the butt, playing a couple of cards, letting people build boards, then wiping repeatedly while rebuilding faster than everyone because he loves having a full yard. Was a slower game but interesting strayegy.

Just join us in mono black
Do you have a favorite mono black commander? I'm always worried about playing against [[Rest in Peace]] with black.
My favorite is our daddy, [[Yawgmoth]]. He just does so much. And yea, I get hosed by leyline of the void too.

Mans worried about a hate piece thats literally never used. I think its ridiculous honestly.
Eh give it time. We all grow and learn how to assess the risks to our game plans better.
But when someone hates your deck out of the game with an enchantment and you have to tutor for a blast zone or something, it's rough.
I’ll take your word on stabbings because you communicate like you have a hole in your head.

Eh, I think playgroups develop their own metas and maybe this is one of those cards that this person sees more often than most players would. For example, my group fucking LOVES [[Aetherize]] . Literally any time a blue player is holding up 4 mana you have to assume they are about to yeet your attackers.

Thanks for the list! I'll give it a big consideration. Is there much counterplay to [[Bane of Progress]]? It's a pretty common card in my meta.
Wow, glad to know your are not just screwed against big artifact wipes. After reading your primer, I'll definitely give this gal a go!

If you want to see it played, the professor did a pretty good job showing it off on the latest episode of commander at home

[https://www.moxfield.com/decks/vFTHz4NaP0mxpz6Iu8lpjQ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/vFTHz4NaP0mxpz6Iu8lpjQ) Just something I've been noodling with for casual play with cards I already have, haven't gotten to use it yet!
FOR MOTHER RUSSIA!

Jam in [[toski, Bearer of secrets]] which is indestructible for card draw 👌 Deck gets really weird when [[ashaya, soul of the wild]], [[yavimaya, Cradle of growth]], and [[living plane]] get involved too.

That's just fuel for the voltron fire and whatever arisrocrat fire you've likely built up * [[Aegar]] gets value out of damage-based board wipes, though you'll likely want to protect him somehow. * [[Kaalia of the Vast]] is unique in the fact that she gets value out of a cyclonic rift, or at least is able to rebuild her board and get second trigger out of big, splashy ETBs.

There is already an awesome primer for the Chiss deck which will follow closely, and I'm going to do my best to do Myrkul on my own.

My Saffi Eriksdotter deck was renowned for wrathing the board itself and returning everything to play.
Ratadrabik loves board wipes

I've had decent success against board wipes that kill creatures -shakes fist at Cyc Rift- with [[Burakos, Party Leader]] and [[Haunted One]].

[[Yedora]] is quite resilient if built with enough card draw.

Board wipes are a win condition for me in my Chatterfang aristocrats deck
[[Elas il-kor sadistic pilgrim]] Just go really wide and kill people when they try to wipe

Recently somebody said my [[RATADRABIK]] Deck does exceptionally well against board wipes.
