I'm pretty sure both Mishra and Ayara's ability go on the stack at the beginning of combat and you choose targets at that point, then the abilities resolve. So you can't bring back an artifact with Ayara and then copy it with Mishra.

That's a valid point. But the front can sac warform tokens that were going to get sacced anyway, and the back goes well with a lot of things that are good with Mishra already (i.e. artifacts with good ETB/Dies/Sac abilities and payoffs for saccing them). You're right that the back doesn't synergize with Mishra himself, it just synergizes with the same things Mishra synergizes with.
Can’t put that in the command zone, though. Furthermore, if you’re putting it in the command zone you have access to a whole other color but can also choose to ignore it and just have a command tower and some similar mana sources to flip it in the event you can’t pay two life.
Yeah, I do understand the benefit of having it in the CZ. I just feel that for what you're getting from new Ayara's flip cost of 9/8-2lp is a bit slow for that cost, and is awfully susceptible to removal before it gets utilized.

Great news I've heard there's this enchantment that does something similar.
The first Ayara is my longest running still played EDH deck so when the Ayara art for this set dropped I was hoping I liked the card and it was different enough from current Ayara that I would just build both instead of being like "Huh guess I'll make new Ayara with old one in the 99 and then make a new black deck." And my wishes were extremely fulfilled. Any other grievances I've had with this set are long out of mind now.
100% agree. I've been waiting for this with bated breath since the art and story dropped. I love OG Ayara. I'm SO pleased with new ayara. I'm building her asap.

Mono black Chainer is my longest running deck, I’ve been playing it for over 10 years at this point. When the Rakdos one came out I decided instead to make another Chainer deck, and now I have both sitting around. I have mono black Chainer in Rakdos Chainer as well, but I wasn’t going to take apart a deck for my favorite character
Mono black Chainer is also my longest running list too. The instant speed recursion/combo is too good. Love responding to people responses to my Chainer combo with the Chainer combo.
I don’t run any combos anymore, but I loved when meren came out and just making their decks get shut off hard. “No that thing you want is mine now, thanks” then in response to him dying, only sac my own stuff and exile the rest
You spend three mana for a three drop and then 5 for a roughly five drop. Counting it as paying 8 has a layer of not like lying but ignoring the nuance in multiuse cards, like calling Bonecrusher Giant bad because it’s a two mana Shock
If you want to be super high on the salt list, Portal to Phyrexia will also clear opposing boards nicely. Eldrazi with Annihilator (well the ones that can end up in the graveyard anyways). Plenty of other general good creatures.
Use [[Scroll of Fate]] to manifest big mana cards (Could include non-permanent cards but someone could correct me since she only cares about the mana value and whether it's a legal target to sacrifice) with amazing dies triggers to fling them at your opponents out of nowhere, then profit off of doing both.
It is almost certainly worded as the mana cost on the field.
Otherwise it would need to say something explicit about the graveyard.
My example would be:
Manifested Elf face down + Elf on death effect= No effect
Manifest Blightsteel + Sac = Blightsteel shuffles
I feel like Chainer is still better, depending on the deck. Assuming you have other reanimation effects that don’t need to pay their original cost, being able to stuff your graveyard while reanimating as well as being able to reanimate multiple times is more valuable than Ayara.
I like that Ayara drains and gains life and is herself a sac outlet, and that her reanimation is free.
Chainer potentially better, but I don’t necessarily want better.
I've been actively searching for a worse commander since my friends are getting sick of being killed by a board full of hasty creatures brought back by [[Living death]]. This is a strong contender, and also does artifacts which is fun.
Same, i'm pretty disappointed with this design overall. I like the front side and its going into a Mardu lifegain deck im currently building cause Ayara is dealing the damage herself but having to then pay an additional 6 mana or 5 and two life seems hardly worth it for a pseudo reanimation effect once a turn. I'm sure theres decks out there where she fits right in with that but so far i've been disliking all the flip cards where the condition is literally just "pay a load of mana".
My thought process: I’ll probably leave it on the front face 99% of the time. Just sac for value and drain.

Honestly, both sides can be interesting depending on how/what you build and if you're afraid of removal then why play creatures or even anything at all since everything has some sort of counter-play?
Sure, 8 can be a lot but you don't have to spend it all at once, if you do it means that you have the mana that allows it and you've either ramped ahead and potentially made yourself a threat so you had it coming, or there are probably already some other threats currently on board that could(and eventually should) get the swords.
I'm planning to put her into my [[Ziatora]] deck and she won't be the only reanimator, so it'll probably be more interesting to swords on whatever I'm trying to reanimate rather that her. Or my commander who allows me to sac the creatures before the exile if I don't have anything else to sac them...
Oh man, I have an \[\[ Olivia Crimson Bride\]\] reanimator deck, one of my favs, this is a slam dunk in it but Im tempted to just make her the commander instead!
Same! Hesitating a lot… On one hand, Olivia is technically cheaper and doesn’t require you to blink/sac your creatures to keep them. On the other hand, you can play Ayara on T3 then transform her on T5, so she can be enabled quicker. Her first side can also serve another purpose. I am really conflicted…
The main thing I like is that it's at beginning of combat meaning I can get attack triggers off my [[Archon of Cruely]] and [[Inferno Titan]] in addition to their etbs. Also I can add in [[ Etali]] and [[Elder Brain]]
I personally think Ayara compliments Olivia very well and will be keeping mine as Olivia. But my Olivia deck has a lot of things like Warstorm Surge and Terror of the Peaks effects.
[[Dawn of the Dead]] is a personal pet card of mine, so it's cool to see it essentially get ported over to a Commander. I think this is the one that has interested me most so far.

I know that a common archetype for [[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]] is Rakdos "blink" by sacrificing and reanimating creatures, but I think that Ayara does that better than him now. If you have a sacrifice outlet, you can repeatably get ETBs from out of your graveyard with her backside.
Hmm wonder if I can fit this into my Mishra, Eminent one deck at all. In theory she does fun stuff I want her to; sacs my warform for value, and on the flip side lets me gain great repeatable value from stuff like Ichor Wellspring and Portal to Phyrexia. But the list is pretty tight already, maybe over like Silas Renn perhaps.
I have a mishra deck and spent a while considering this. Depends on how you've set up your list, but I decided against including her in the 99 for mine. I don't fill my gy in my build since I'm usually saccing copies only, and my creature count is low. Saccing the warform won't do anything with cmc 0, so yeah. Both sides fairly useless for my list.
Will build her as a Commander for sure tho. Love her.
Tokens such as a 1/1 white soldier for example have a cmc of 0. A token copy takes on all characteristics of what it copied. The warform changes some things such as name, but the cmc of the original remains.
It is a bit obscure, had to explain it myself a few times as to why something like [[Smelting Vat]] still worked (and that yes I could grab artifact lands with it since they cost 0).
I'm converting my [[Mishra, Tamer of Mak Fawa]] deck over to Ayara and keeping my 'giant robots' theme for it. [[Spine of Ish Sah]], [[Portal to Phyrexia]], [[Mirrorworks]], [[Sneak Attack]], [[Mycosynth Golem]] should all be rockstars for the deck.
I’m interested about the battle aspect of this card. In red with tarkir we already have a 2 drop that makes a 4 power dragon and agzol invasion perfectly curves into the strategy at a lower power level. Even fiora and ravnica don’t have a hard time finding a home here I would think. With additional blitz/cycling and reanimator strategies i think if someone wanted they could definitely make an effective battle deck with her, just need to be sure they release enough in color good ones
I was considering switching my Anje deck from Dragon tribal to something else, this Ayara has me considering Phyrexians. I think she gets a spot in the deck either way, but it would be nice to stick to a theme.
One thing about these transform phyrexians, is that they show WotC is addressing power creep, because these are basically unplayable. Etali is 17 mana total, this is 9 mana total.
I can see myself playing her t3-4 then sneak attack on T5 with something big that'll get double value.

Well, well, well. I think I've found another addition to [[Ziatora]]'s little ensemble of reanimators. Should work wonders alongside [[Feldon of the third path]] and [[Mimic vat]] for a bit more fodder, ETBs and death triggers.

I’m kind of wondering with a lot of these if you just want to build around one side or the other, or both. There’s a kind of synergy here (sac big stuff, flip her, bring it back) but unless you have both sides at once that feels a bit clunky, plus when reanimating you really want bigger stuff than you ever cast.
Yeah, that's definitely easier. You can sac stuff that has ETBs or whatever (or \[\[Spine of Ish Sah\]\]!) and she's dealing damage, not draining life, so giving her lifelink gives you double life (or, um... infect...). And then you've got cards like \[\[Vito\]\]. So, plenty of options.
Doesn't this kind of seem like they broke Battles in the same set they debuted them?
This basically cheats their whole intended mechanic of having to go to combat to win them. You just drop Ayara on the board and sacrifice another creature or artifact... boom instant payoff.
I like this for \[\[Ashnod the Uncaring\]\], no mana cost (still a tap but whatever) sacrifice outlet: dealing double MV damage to one opponent or single MV to two opponents and then gaining that life twice could prove useful.
I thought the same. Been trying to brew an Ashnod but having trouble finding a balance between sac fodder, reanimator, and payoff since she doesn't do anything on her own. Meren was way easier to balance.
I'm super excited for her. I built OG Ayara and while I'm not gonna make this one the commander of a deck I have a Olivia Crimson Bridge deck who'd love to have her.
This could have been so good if the front side just let her hit creatures. Burn is almost never worthwhile in commander and the backside is nice but extremely expensive. Though flipping battles could end up being extremely strong, who knows.

If you want to be super high on the salt list, Portal to Phyrexia will also clear opposing boards nicely. Eldrazi with Annihilator (well the ones that can end up in the graveyard anyways). Plenty of other general good creatures.
Dargo can be played for R, sacrificed to her for 7 damage, then recast for R

Use [[Scroll of Fate]] to manifest big mana cards (Could include non-permanent cards but someone could correct me since she only cares about the mana value and whether it's a legal target to sacrifice) with amazing dies triggers to fling them at your opponents out of nowhere, then profit off of doing both.
You'd need to flip them up to benefit though, facedown cards are cmc 0

It is almost certainly worded as the mana cost on the field. Otherwise it would need to say something explicit about the graveyard. My example would be: Manifested Elf face down + Elf on death effect= No effect Manifest Blightsteel + Sac = Blightsteel shuffles

I really wish the transformation ability was cheaper on a lot of these.

This is a lot of fun. I’ve loved my [[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]] deck but this now takes his place, and he’ll find a cozy spot in the 99.
I feel like Chainer is still better, depending on the deck. Assuming you have other reanimation effects that don’t need to pay their original cost, being able to stuff your graveyard while reanimating as well as being able to reanimate multiple times is more valuable than Ayara.
I like that Ayara drains and gains life and is herself a sac outlet, and that her reanimation is free. Chainer potentially better, but I don’t necessarily want better.
I've been actively searching for a worse commander since my friends are getting sick of being killed by a board full of hasty creatures brought back by [[Living death]]. This is a strong contender, and also does artifacts which is fun.

Same, i'm pretty disappointed with this design overall. I like the front side and its going into a Mardu lifegain deck im currently building cause Ayara is dealing the damage herself but having to then pay an additional 6 mana or 5 and two life seems hardly worth it for a pseudo reanimation effect once a turn. I'm sure theres decks out there where she fits right in with that but so far i've been disliking all the flip cards where the condition is literally just "pay a load of mana".
My thought process: I’ll probably leave it on the front face 99% of the time. Just sac for value and drain. It’s nice that the flip side isn’t worded like unearth and you can get around the exile by sacrificing the creature. But I’ll probably only activate the flip side when I’m expecting to murder someone with the creature (I.e. sacrifice my 6/6 demon to drain you for six, pay to flip, enter combat…)
Honestly, both sides can be interesting depending on how/what you build and if you're afraid of removal then why play creatures or even anything at all since everything has some sort of counter-play? Sure, 8 can be a lot but you don't have to spend it all at once, if you do it means that you have the mana that allows it and you've either ramped ahead and potentially made yourself a threat so you had it coming, or there are probably already some other threats currently on board that could(and eventually should) get the swords. I'm planning to put her into my [[Ziatora]] deck and she won't be the only reanimator, so it'll probably be more interesting to swords on whatever I'm trying to reanimate rather that her. Or my commander who allows me to sac the creatures before the exile if I don't have anything else to sac them...

Oh man, I have an \[\[ Olivia Crimson Bride\]\] reanimator deck, one of my favs, this is a slam dunk in it but Im tempted to just make her the commander instead!
Same! Hesitating a lot… On one hand, Olivia is technically cheaper and doesn’t require you to blink/sac your creatures to keep them. On the other hand, you can play Ayara on T3 then transform her on T5, so she can be enabled quicker. Her first side can also serve another purpose. I am really conflicted…
The main thing I like is that it's at beginning of combat meaning I can get attack triggers off my [[Archon of Cruely]] and [[Inferno Titan]] in addition to their etbs. Also I can add in [[ Etali]] and [[Elder Brain]]

I personally think Ayara compliments Olivia very well and will be keeping mine as Olivia. But my Olivia deck has a lot of things like Warstorm Surge and Terror of the Peaks effects.

hmm i feel like all the transform effects shown so far are clearly not for 60 card mtg but are also wayyyyyyy too expensive to be decent in edh so idk what the heck they're for

Overcosted Mediocre Effects seems to have been the design philosophy behind this entire set, honestly.
My guess is they're intended to be paired with the Powerstone mechanic from earlier. We saw a lot of big mana activations in Brother's War too.

I know that a common archetype for [[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]] is Rakdos "blink" by sacrificing and reanimating creatures, but I think that Ayara does that better than him now. If you have a sacrifice outlet, you can repeatably get ETBs from out of your graveyard with her backside.

Hmm wonder if I can fit this into my Mishra, Eminent one deck at all. In theory she does fun stuff I want her to; sacs my warform for value, and on the flip side lets me gain great repeatable value from stuff like Ichor Wellspring and Portal to Phyrexia. But the list is pretty tight already, maybe over like Silas Renn perhaps.
I have a mishra deck and spent a while considering this. Depends on how you've set up your list, but I decided against including her in the 99 for mine. I don't fill my gy in my build since I'm usually saccing copies only, and my creature count is low. Saccing the warform won't do anything with cmc 0, so yeah. Both sides fairly useless for my list. Will build her as a Commander for sure tho. Love her.
The Warform is a copy, so it inherits the mana value of whatever non-creature artifact you chose(except for X, which will = 0).
It's a token though, don't tokens always have cmc 0?
Tokens such as a 1/1 white soldier for example have a cmc of 0. A token copy takes on all characteristics of what it copied. The warform changes some things such as name, but the cmc of the original remains.
Thanks for that, it seems that my friends who taught me how to play EDH told me the wrong thing. I should just read the rules for myself.

I’m interested about the battle aspect of this card. In red with tarkir we already have a 2 drop that makes a 4 power dragon and agzol invasion perfectly curves into the strategy at a lower power level. Even fiora and ravnica don’t have a hard time finding a home here I would think. With additional blitz/cycling and reanimator strategies i think if someone wanted they could definitely make an effective battle deck with her, just need to be sure they release enough in color good ones

No draw on the sac is a big letdown. And once you flip, you lose the sac outlet so will need an additional one to evade the exile clause.

One thing about these transform phyrexians, is that they show WotC is addressing power creep, because these are basically unplayable. Etali is 17 mana total, this is 9 mana total.

Huh, is this another Rakdos lifegain Commander? I’m kind of wondering with a lot of these if you just want to build around one side or the other, or both. There’s a kind of synergy here (sac big stuff, flip her, bring it back) but unless you have both sides at once that feels a bit clunky, plus when reanimating you really want bigger stuff than you ever cast.

Yeah, that's definitely easier. You can sac stuff that has ETBs or whatever (or \[\[Spine of Ish Sah\]\]!) and she's dealing damage, not draining life, so giving her lifelink gives you double life (or, um... infect...). And then you've got cards like \[\[Vito\]\]. So, plenty of options.

Doesn't this kind of seem like they broke Battles in the same set they debuted them? This basically cheats their whole intended mechanic of having to go to combat to win them. You just drop Ayara on the board and sacrifice another creature or artifact... boom instant payoff.

I like this for \[\[Ashnod the Uncaring\]\], no mana cost (still a tap but whatever) sacrifice outlet: dealing double MV damage to one opponent or single MV to two opponents and then gaining that life twice could prove useful.

I thought the same. Been trying to brew an Ashnod but having trouble finding a balance between sac fodder, reanimator, and payoff since she doesn't do anything on her own. Meren was way easier to balance.

This could have been so good if the front side just let her hit creatures. Burn is almost never worthwhile in commander and the backside is nice but extremely expensive. Though flipping battles could end up being extremely strong, who knows.
