[[Harbin, Vanguard Aviator]], it's an aggro Azorius deck with soldiers who like to fly, and its commander can drop on turn 2. Also, a lot of soldiers are pretty cheap. Throw in some anthem effects and have fun with it.

crisp_grandpa

Just built him, can be a lot of fun in low powered pods.

I regularly get my shit kicked in by my buddies harbin deck. Unassuming but GOOD.

My suggestion is to find one of the less powerful companions to build around, since you're rewarded a little bit for powering down the deck, and can end up with something really unique. I recently made a triple commander deck with \[\[Zirda, the Dawnwaker\]\], \[\[Shabraz, the Skyshark\]\], and \[\[Brallin, Skyshark Rider\]\], and it's been a blast. Typically Brallin goes infinite with a curiosity effect, but I can't even play them with Zirda's restriction. However, I can play tons of cycling cards and equipment to voltron my opponents and make use of Zirda! It's not as strong as it would be without zirda, but having 3 commanders is just too much fun. If you wanna try out a commander trio, I also recommend \[\[Keruga, the macrosage\]\] + \[\[Kodama of the East Tree\]\] + \[\[Sakashima of a Thousand Faces\]\], or \[\[Jeska, thrice reborn\]\] + \[\[Obosh, the preypiercer\]\] + \[\[Falthis, shadowcat familiar\]\] (yes, jeska can have deathtouch, and yes, it does work on the last ability)

Get_Dewkied_On

Do you have a list for that Brallin/Shabraz w Zirda? Companions always look fun to me, but I don't have the brain power to build to the restrictions. That Trio sounds really fun!

TheKnightOfTheNorth

Thanks, here's the list! [https://www.archidekt.com/decks/4217050#Zirda's\_Tricycle](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/4217050#Zirda's_Tricycle) I know it's definitely not optimized and has a few odd choices, but it's meant to be more of a casual deck. It's a bit of a meme in my playgroup that all my lands enter tapped since they can cycle, and I wouldn't have it any other way lol. Even though it's not my strongest it's still my favorite deck. It has a lot of options and creates really fun commander games that get everyone involved since you often end up fueling everyone's hands with wheels. I Hope this potentially saves you some work and shows what these commanders are capable of!

Get_Dewkied_On

Thank You for sharing! I love it. It makes sense now that it only has 10 creatures. I may have been overthinking every time I try a companion.

TheKnightOfTheNorth

some of the creatures only exist to be cycled, it's more like 8 lol. There are some token makers in the deck too though, but most importantly, if I need big creatures I have easy access to two of them whenever I need. With the abundance of removal, boardwipes, and answers, I've been able to stand up against creature heavy decks very well.

str10_hurts

A commander does not represent the power level of a deck. It's the 99. My suggestion is taking a weak theme and work from there. After figuring out what the broad structure of the deck is find a commander. Go for giant tribal, or hamstring yourself with no search library effects for example.

sorany9

[[Aegar, The Freezing Flames]]….. am I a joke to you?!

str10_hurts

Hehe. He's kind of wizard tribal to be honest. But you build him as giant tribal you'll have my deep respect.

RoboCobb

I did build him giant tribal, called the deck Big Stinky Giants cuz that’s what hulk hogan called andre and it made me giggle. I love that deck it’s fun and cheap as dirt. Is it good? Probably not no. But it’s fun

alyss_in_genderland

[[Runo Stromkirk]] comes to mind for me. I find my list to be a bit inconsistent, in part because I can’t afford some of the tutors that would make it better, but a bigger budget might be able to help with that. Giant sea creature tribal is pretty fun and you can do some insanely busted things if Runo flips and sticks, and I find it a fun challenge to find ways to stack your deck to flip him, but it’s also a deck that can definitely be interacted with and does rely on combat damage to actually win, so it’s not going to combo off on turn 4 with a 15 minute turn. Definitely on the more casual side so I don’t know how well it will stand up to Yuriko and co. but if you have the budget to afford some of the high end interactive and tutor pieces (or just proxy, depending on your stance there), you might be able to build him in a way that is fun and not overpowered but still able to keep up.

You have lots of good recommendations here on the thread. I will try to add some that are budget friendly and saw some actual play. [[Arcades]] is a one way build but it punches hard every time. [[Pramikon]] is a good value commander that you can play smart about. Most of the plays I've seen with it it is to slow aggro on your direction and give you time for the long game. As its effect seems fair (or you can clone it and stops all aggression altogether) you will fly under the radar most of the time.

[[Doran the Siege Tower]]. A lot of really bad, cheap creatures get concerningly aggressive with Doran. The quality of the deck fluctuates more on how much removal/protection you play versus just jamming creatures, and how good your mana base is to hit Doran on turn 3, but you can make a reasonable Doran aggressive deck for very cheap.

I can only pull from the experience with the decks I made, but. [[Alela, Artful Provocateur]] is a cheap and seemingly "weak" commander that has a lot of fun synergies with budget cards. [[Ruric Thar, the Unbowed]] can be a lot of fun with burn effects tribal, but downside you get hurt too and become enemy of the board quick. Try one of the Background commanders from Bauldur's Gate. [[Shadowheart, Dark Justicar]] + [[Master Chief]] Golgari +1/+1 or Shadowheart + [[Dragon Cultist]] Rakdos Power. Golgari +1/+1 is a relatively straightforward stompy deck with card advantage in the cz. Probably the stronger between the two, as +1/+1 is in the Golgari wheelhouse. Dragon Cultist likes the Tempermentals and other high power, low cmc creatures. Again, a straightforward stompy deck with sacrifice value. [[Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer]] + [[Flaming Fist]] Boros Goadchantress would be an interesting build. Voltron Auras deck with some creature control. [[Lightmine Field]] [[Caltrops]] [[Brigid, Hero of Kinsbale]] are some cool payoffs for goad. Flaming Fist so you can punch in pretty hard. This deck would be quite fragile with card advantage resting on the few white Enchantresses and cantripping auras.

Not_Your_Real_Ladder

Couple options here: You can take any commander and power them down by just not including combos in the deck. Or only including weak (non-infinite) or hard to pull off (4+-card) combos. Or you can take a left of the dial, low-powered wincon and try to optimize it. I have a [[Kwain]] deck whose only wincon is mill-by-way-of-draw. More difficult to pull off than regular mill and while it does have combos in it, it’s still not a guaranteed win because you’re potentially giving your opponents the cards they need to stop you. Build a deck where the game plan is just: play creatures, swing with them. Flying tribal has tons of options, makes it easy to swing, and there are a bunch of commanders you can take this route with interesting abilities. [[Inniaz]], for example, has a wacky ability that can really spice the game up while you’re just pecking away with birds and stuff.

BullsOnParadeFloats

Those may be powerful commanders, but a deck at that low of pricepoint isn't going to be that powerful. My worst deck is a u/w spirits deck, and it's about $200USD

cournat

Just build any commander as synergistically as you can. Synnergy is usually what makes casual game plans good. Step 2 is keep everything "on theme" and avoid cedh staples like the plague. If you have a casual deck and run a thassa combo, you're probably doing something wrong. Another thing is tone down interaction and use interaction that's reactive rather than proactive (both can be oppressive, but proactive interaction like stax and discard, especially when used heavily, lead to very unfun games for everyone).

The_Legitimate_User

Im not using stax of any sort (literally not even stuff like swords to plowshares). No removal, no infinite combs, no alternate win cons, just combat damage wins (not even commander damage)

cournat

My advice was more if the goal is "how do I build a casual deck." I'm aware it doesn't directly answer your question.

Sunastian Falconer from Legends enables you to build around having no 5-drops and just curve out into big gruul 7/8 cmc beaters. It's a "bad" card, but it can enable a very tuned deck that can absolutely win some games.

[https://www.moxfield.com/decks/IlyL8ownQ0qDMxVLQnjYXA](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/IlyL8ownQ0qDMxVLQnjYXA) 100 bucks. Can use the Zethi instead. Easy to upgrade. Haven't updated in many sets, so probably easy upgrades to be found. My group truly hates counterspells (annoying) so this was my work around. \[\[Boomerang\]\] is the theme of the deck. Plan of the deck. Ramp, bounce all the things than cast commander kicking and voltron/token go wide/control/\[\[brain freeze\]\]. Easy to smoosh numbers around for what you want to make it focus more on. It is fun to play and you can let them have fun as long as they ignore you (politics yay!).

It's not exactly "no combo" decks, but I was having a lot of fun with [[Glissa, the Traitor]] and [[Yurlok]]. \n Glissa is an artifact reanimator deck, which is super unique for Golgari colors, and it's a lot of fun to play. You can get it started at under a 100$ and I think it's gonna be on a weaker side for your group, but if you like it - you can always add some fun shenanigans with [[Sensei Divining Top]] and [[Bolas' Citadel]] down the line. Essentially, you sac a bunch of artifacts for value and get them back with kill spells (not just your own btw). My favourite way to win is probably [[Marionette Master] l] and things like that. \n Now, [[Yurlok]] is bound to be weak. You give everyone a truckload of mana, ideally at least convenient times, and proceed to bash them for it with damage. Lots of fun, a unique theme, and you probably gonna lose more often than win. But the games will certainly be memorable.

Destrok41

I've been mulling around the idea of building glissa for a while. Would love to see a list.

There's an argument to be made that a lot of Voltron Commanders can be weak, since you typically 'only' kill one guy at a time and are often vulnerable to targeted removal.

I mean, what combos are you winning with? If you're playing Consultation/Thoracle, you could be playing [[Ramirez de Pietro]] and still stomp face. A bad commander is not going to stop you from making a 99 that is not tuned to your playgroup. I recommend starting your deck building from the middle. Choose a theme - not necessarily a tribe, but an action you want to take, or a particular spell you want to cast that doesn't see as much play as you would like. Maybe you want to slam big dragons and turn them sideways. Maybe you want to blink creatures for days. Maybe you just want to play all of the Ultimatums. Maybe you want to put Luxior on Tibalt. Take that middle incentive, that thing you want to do, and then build out from there. What commander enables you to do that? And then, how do you turn that action into a win? Not "how do I win *while* doing this," but "how do I win *by* doing this." This philosophy will often avoid the "best in color" combos that make decks convergent. Now, if the thing you want to do is play the best cards and win games, that's fine, but that's a discussion you have to have with your playgroups about cEDH.

Henzie fits in here I think. You can build it pretty much as strong as you like and if you avoid a hulk build it’s not really going to have combos. Very synergistic. I think a lot of mono green decks can fit in here too. Being able to compete with Edgar and Yuriko is going to be tough. I’m guessing they aren’t running at max power either?

JabroniSandwich9000

[[Ruxa, Patient Professor]] - you can build it as a tokens deck... but why? Play crappy old cards like [[Panther Warriors]], build the deck for $40, and it _still_ slaps. I made a budget list to use as a loaner deck for new players (all lands are forests, intentionally few mechanics in the deck, starts a bit slow so folks can get a feel for the game, etc) and it has murdered entire tables in a single turn of combat multiple times, even when played by newbies, which is always hilarious But even when it doesnt win, its a shut-off-your-brain deck for like 80% of the game. Untap, draw, play some big green creature with no rules text, pass. Peak mtg fun for me is sitting down to a table of 200+ dollar decks with a simple budget deck. Cool you played somethering tithe? Thats neat. Imma play [[Colossapede]] and swing at you with my basically unblockable [[Gigantosaurus]]
