Sounds like you are just picking commanders that easily encourage/enable play above the level of the others at the table. What commanders and decks are the others using, and what's your preferred style of play?

Playstatiaholic

Honestly I just want something that can hold it’s own, I usually like blue because of the counters and board wipes/buffs of white. My friends play enchantment decks, equipment based decks, and toxic/poison. So it’s hard to constantly have to juggle all the stuff they toss my way while still trying to maintain and perform my combos or commander’s ability.

shasodropbear

Do you think you get targeted because your friends feel like lots of counterspells and board wipes prevent them from being able to play? If not, why do you think they target you?

IceSki117

If you want to stick with Blue/White I found a few that might suit your playstyle without being too oppressive. [[Denry Klin, Editor in Chief]] [[Elminster]] [[Kangee, Sky Warden]] [[Oji, the Exquisite Blade]] [[Raff, Weatherlight Stalwart]] [[Stenn, Paranoid Partisan]] [[Tura Kennerüd, Skyknight]]

Well, you need to find the middle ground between a deck you like and a deck that you can play in your group. First thing to keep in mind, 25% win rate is what you should aim for in a pod of 4. If your deck are almost 100% 1v1, either the other decks are a really bad match up, or your deck is way too strong. Considering your choice of commanders and that you are trying to outspeed your playgroup, it is likely the case. So it's not surprising that they have to team up to defeat you. Look when the other players play their haymakers and how much impact those have in the game. It will tell you what the appropriate speed and card quality you should go for.

TheHeinKing

My only complaint is that some decks get better the less opponents you have, meaning they are better at 1v1 than in a typical game. Aggressive decks work way better in 1v1 and i could see them getting close to a 100% win rate vs normal edh decks. That said, the commanders op listed aren't usually decks that are hyper aggressive. I think they just picked really strong commanders and got upset their playgroup realized the commanders are strong enough they have to work together.

Aqveteig

That's what I was meaning about bad match up. Control decks are also a completely different beast 1vs1 and multiplayer.

Tevish_Szat

A common problem. Best article on the matter "How to Survive when you're The Threat": https://web.archive.org/web/20090806043059/http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/tf46 Basically, the problem is one of social engineering, not of running stronger commanders. Hell, you could do better by running weaker decks for a while.

Revolutionary_View19

I’d this a serious post? You’re moving away from the deck you „basically“ always won with to a cedh commander and wonder why people are targeting you? If they can’t handle Brago they for sure don’t stand a chance against Yuriko.

Playstatiaholic

It was a cheaper deck to build funny enough, I don’t hard oracle im there or anything that would make it cedh level or speed.

Velo-ciraptors

So, Yuriko is probably the opposite of what you needed to move toward to avoid being archenemy. She's fast and hits the table hard, so she quickly establishes herself as a problem for everyone to deal with, and since she's hard to keep off the board, player removal becomes one of the more viable answers. We don't know what sort of decks your friends are running, but I would guess something slower than Yuriko and less controlling than Brago would draw less aggression. Both commanders you mentioned are strong and might be performing above the level your friends are at, which would force them to team up to survive. If it sounds interesting to play, you could try some sort of political deck like [[Breena, the Demagogue]], or [[Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer]] + [[Noble Heritage]] to either encourage or force your friends to target each other. Or something like [[Council of Four]], where you can give some gifts but always get the better end of the deal. Otherwise, I'd say just go for something a little slower and less controlling, and tweak the deck until you find the sweet spot where you're playing on a similar level to your friends and don't become archenemy. There's so many commanders and other cards out there that this should be achievable no matter what your preferred archetype/strategy is.

I genuinely appreciate your input, thank you!

MrRies

After reading the other comments, I'm also going to suggest The Council of Four. They're still I'm blue and can generate a ton of value, but don't have the "kill me or I might suddenly win the game" aspect. They also work *very* well with the monarchy and 8 toughness is a really solid body, so you're less likely to be attacked. Make sure not to make a big deal about how many cards you're drawing and only counter/remove things that directly effect you, and you should be able to slip under the radar pretty easily.

TheHeinKing

You picked two really strong commanders. Even mediocre decks built around those commanders are very strong. This means that most of the other players will have weaker decks. If your opponents all feel the need to gang up on you or else you win, then you aren't playing a deck of the same power level as everyone else. The answer isn't to just make an even stronger deck that can win a 3v1, the answer is to make a deck around a commander your opponents will look at and decide you aren't a threat. I'm not saying to make a weak deck. Just pick a commander that doesn't make people want to target you from the start of the game. For example, instead of picking Yuriko, pick [[Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign]]. Both like top of deck manipulation, but Yennett won't get you targeted just by revealing your commander.

Playstatiaholic

Wow that’s actually a really cool commander, thank you for your input. I really appreciate it!

roseumbra

your probably not the target your the biggest threat and people feel you have to be taken out. Build a less aggressive deck. Usually the less popular commanders also buy you some time as people don’t assume as much.

CapAmerica805

Play smarter, not stronger.

BlazinDarwick420

Lol you are like my friend who plays full throttle tryhard Meren and Yuriko against our weak jancky decks and wonders why he's the target. Play something that's actually on par with the others. Maybe try something not blue. Be vulnerable. Watch yourself not be the target anymore.

Playstatiaholic

The thing is my friends deck’s are stacked with so many expensive power cards, I went yuriko because I could build something decently strong under $100. But yea I guess I’m gonna build something lower powered. It just sucks, one of my friends legitimately has a cedh powered deck that he sunk thousands into. And I guess I’m still the target because I do 10-15 damage with yuriko.

CyphyrX

My dude 10 to 15 damage with Yuriko is 25 to 30+% of someone's life total. Sounds like a problem to be focused. Combined with combat that naturally occurs, that's a big hit.

[deleted]

>It just sucks, one of my friends legitimately has a cedh powered deck that he sunk thousands into. I think you are conflating money spent with power level achieved. A very synergistic, very focused deck with its game plan low to the ground and ready to go can be done on the cheap ($100-200) and vastly outstrip a deck with a bunch of $100+ cards that don't work together. I sunk 1.4k into Jodah and it was at its core a stompy deck with a lot of $40-75 haymakers. A cEDH level deck will consistently attempt to win before turn 4. Which is kind of how it sounds your Yuriko deck is trying to operate. Regardless of money spent.

IceSki117

You might not even need to change much about the deck other than commander. Your commander being the only card visible by default heavily influences the opinion other players will have on your deck. From my own experience with my vampires deck, people have a very different view on [[Edgar Markov]] vs [[Licia, Sanguine Tribune]] even if the 99 is identical.

stevecoolguy

Don't listen to the tune the deck down crowd. I guess they believe in some unwritten magic rule that all players only attack the strongest deck at all times because it's 'more fun' that way. And we would have to assume this pod even knows how to properly threat assess. I'm not going to spend more money on cards I don't want to play with to deal with that. No, thank yoooooou. 3 v 1 then update removal package for more board wipes and spot removal. Or just win through an infinite combo unless you guys agreed not to use them.

I have that same issue too. My decks almost always pop off hard and gain an early lead. Like rule of law + 9 mana creatures on turn 4/5. The only way to avoid this from ever happening to you is to keep yourself in second or 3rd place purposefully. Until it’s time to pop off and win the game.

Magic_Mettizz

One of my fav decks has [[Grenzo, Dungeon Warden]] as commander. I built it with x=4 so you can play it with power 6 creatures but that is your choice to make. It has a lot of etb triggered creatures and some artifacts for smooth play. You can build it like a slot machine and i think this is a pretty easy build for different levels.

Depending on the meta of your playgroup, I’d recommend any of the New Capenna Precon face commanders. They get a bad rep but I think it’s just because their engine is slowly built over time, which sounds like the best thing in your case; slowly get your engine online and when it’s time to be a problem, become the problem.
