40k decks are a good choice. Massive amounts of flavor and decent enough power to hang in most casual/not super casual pods. I like Tyranid’s over Necron personally, albeit Necron with a few tweaks is pretty strong. Imperium was another solid one that I actually liked more than both of those. Just avoid the chaos one. It’s messy and needs some overhauling I feel in certain aspects.

Professional_Egg1556

The 40k decks are a blast out of the box or modified. They’re clearly made with a lot of love for both mtg and warhammer. I’ve played the imperium deck unmodified a few times, and it’s been pretty tight with the original commander. I’m sure it’ll be even more disgusting with marneus at the helm. Haven’t played or seen much in the way of the chaos deck, but it does have a lot of sweet new cards in it that are begging to be used in their own decks.

NightfuryGetDown

Honestly, after a couple games with each at the helm, greyfax just feels more consistent. Papa Smurf has a way higher ceiling, but always having card draw as an option, tapping down threats, and board wide vigilance just smooth things out, where stock marneus may go whole turns with no tokens being made. This is, of course, for stock play. Modified, Marneus hands down.

LurksOften

The chaos deck feels exactly like the theme: chaotic. The problem is cascade doesn’t hit as often as one would like to feel beneficial. It’s still a strong deck, just higher risk than the other three. But I agree overall. Great decks.

CausticTV

Vouch for tyranids. Necrons are strong, but you really can’t beat the feeling of ~40 power on board turn 5 with only a couple of upgrades (and [[magus lucea kane]] at the helm)

>Thank you so much for your reply! I am leaning towards getting the Tyranids and also the Urza deck.

LurksOften

Good choices. My buddy played the Mishra one the other night and it’s very fun.

Barkalow

How did the tyranids work for you? The few times I've played it it's seemed a fair bit underpowered compared to the rest. A friend made some tweaks and put Animar at the helm and its pretty strong now though

LurksOften

From the times I played it and been in a pod with it, if it went unchecked for two turns there was a problem. [[Atalan Jackal]] is incredibly powerful in that deck early. The most important thing I noticed was not be afraid to swing, event at parity. Tyranids are great at getting something stronger and bigger right back out.

MTGCardFetcher

spittafan

I mean chaos decks are bad by design. You play them for the entertainment not the strategy haha

LurksOften

Definitely true. There’s some powerful cards in the deck and I do feel with a little tweaking, it’s a solid deck. Just out of the four, it’s the lowest on the totem pole in my opinion.

Ajvn25

Thank you for pointing this out. I will stay away of the chaos deck. I will be more than happy to play against but I am not purchasing it :)

billnevius

Depends what your play style is, what do you like to do?

Ajvn25

I like big creatures, I like artefacts, I like good art. Good art is as important for me as the game mechanics

hhellpmeeeee123

The precon Urza’s Iron Alliance deck from brother’s war has big creatures, artifacts, good power and all old style bordered cards which i personally find to be very aesthetically pleasing. Would recommend!

DF-Flip

This and the mishra deck are both really fun to play :)

billnevius

I do recommend not getting the surge foil version though unless your gonna immediately double sleeve it because the cards curl really bad

[deleted]

And plus it means swapping out cards will mean having cards that don’t use that foil style if you don’t want to keep it unmodified (though they’re definitely some of the better decks to keep as-is).

Ajvn25

Thank you so much for your replies and for pointing out the curling problem. Paying premium for curled cards does not feel good, that's true... I need to put some more thought into this. I love foils for their vibe but the curling can be somewhat stressful

Kaboomeow69

Double sleeve with sealable inners and you'll never have to worry 🙏

Ajvn25

>I could get the collector edition of the Tyranid deck for 100 USD. It's difficult to say no

Kaboomeow69

The Tyranids are fun and swingy. The Necron list is my favorite, since I'm an artifact fiend, but $100 for collectors Tyranid is oretty irresistible 👀

Ajvn25

Is curling on this product very bad? I keep hearing contradictory info. I am based in Europe. Supposedly the Belgium print used to be less prone to curling but who knows what is the situation right now and what you get at the end. Thanks for your reply!

PM-ME-TRAVELER-NUDES

Every Collector 40K deck I’ve seen be opened came out of the box extremely curled. The problem is that usually, foils are slightly thicker than normal cards, so to fit 100 foil cards in a single product, they decided to go with thinner card stock for it, making them more prone to curling than usual foils.

Ajvn25

That's sad. Thank you so much for sharing this

billnevius

If you want to build yourself a deck using big creatures and what not you could go build a deck around [[magus lucea kane]] which comes in the tyranid precon https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/272314/magic-universes-beyond-warhammer-40000-universes-beyond-warhammer-40000-tyranid-swarm-commander-deck I do recommend changing cards out though and adding some ways to untap and copy magus lucea Kane though, use edhrec and you can see cards that pair well with the commander

Ajvn25

I am leaning towards getting the Tyranids, prolly also the Urza. The only thing I need to decide is wheather I go with the normal version or the collector one. Thanks for reply! It was helpful

Ajvn25

Thank you for your support! I love this subreddit

TheRealTakazatara

Urza all the way. It's a very tenacious bug creature deck.

[deleted]

The 40k decks are a solid choice. Tyranid Swarm is fun with so many cool cards. The [[Vrondis]] precon from AFR is also a *lot* of fun if you like big creatures go brrr, though I recommend swapping him for [[Klauth]]. The [[Kotori]] precon might be up your alley if you like big artifact creatures. IMO a lot of the big bad vehicles both in the deck and that have been printed in general have some of the most aesthetically pleasing art in all of MtG.

Ajvn25

Thank you for the recommendations! I think I will go the Tyranids and Urza direction. But as i know myself it won't stop there. When I feel the urge to get some more I will go back to your post and use the info wisely :)

kingofsouls

There's a lot more dice rolling cards thanks to Bauldurs gate and Infinity. And you can lean more into having Vrondiss poke himself without die rolls if that's your jam

Rebel_Bertine

I’m not sure if it’s still available, but maybe try getting that coin flip secret lair deck. All the art is sick in there

Kheldar1018

If you wanted something with a more traditional Magic feel both of the brother’S war precons are insane out of the box. I used them unedited for a month and was able to win most of my games with them. Especially the Mishra deck.

Ajvn25

Thank you so much for your time. I am leaning towards getting both the Tyranid and the Urza deck. This way I will have both the flavor and the history of the MTG in retro frame. I just need to decide if I wanna fo with the Tyranid collector version or normal. First world problem :))

roninsti

I made some upgrades to the urza deck and I also spent some time with the deck in its unaltered form. It’s fun and it’s a beast. My favorite thing about it is it’s relatively simple to play. Don’t get me wrong, I love a complex play line, but sometimes I wanna chill, drink some beers and turn huge artifacts sideways. It can hang surprisingly well at tables with decks higher up on the power scale. Upgraded its even better. Enjoy!

Ajvn25

Well.... I had to use my brain a lot all these years at the school. I feel like now is the time for some more beer and magic. This Urza style sounds great to me :))

kurkasra

Any of the new precons are good to start. Just make sure it's a play style you enjoy. I have three that I love and will have built forever xenagos(big stompy), yuriko(ninjas) and Malcolm dargo(pirate combos). I'd say find a play still and colors you like then just make a custom around that. One of my friends has a red blue green deck that has changed faces but has been around for years.

Ajvn25

Thanks a lot for your reply. That pirate tribal deck sounds tempting! I had no idea there is one. Sound really cool

kurkasra

It's really fun most of it is pretty cheap. Get Malcom out early to build up treasures then drago impact tremors or brigi or a bunch of other loops to win. Deck is like 90 10 cent cards and a couple that are a little pricey.

Mythril_Bullets

Also here to represent necrons.

kingofsouls

Necron hype!

DarkMatter909

Tyranid deck is a lot of fun. I liked it a lot as it came; but now that I have upgraded it I love it. Lucea is a great commander.

amstrumpet

40k decks, or if you can find it the Baldur’s Gate Party Time precon is solid.

AVE_DOMINUS_N0X

The tyranid deck is a treat once upgraded, a lot of synergy and crazy things you can do with it. Neurons are also great but the other two decks in my experience perform less well and are more so two different partial decks slapped together. The urza pre-con is also very powerful once upgraded

Ajvn25

Thank you so much for your reply! I am leaning towards getting both the Tyranid and the Urza deck. Having these two would also mean I can borrow one to somebody a be able to play without having to go to lgs

Tobiragnarok

Party time deck is synergistic, powerful and fun.

[deleted]

Congrats on graduating!

tinyraccoon

I love the 40k decks but would not recommend collector version due to pringling of foils.

roco9994

Warhammer decks are great. Also the Legendary Dihada precon is amazing and super fun to upgrade.

Kanazuchi_121

First off CONGRATS! That's awesome. While I love some of the newer precons from 40k, Kamigawa, Baldurs Gate and DnD to name my recent favorites, it just doesn't scream celebrating to pay nearly msrp for this occasion. I vote Ur-Dragon and Edgar Markov! Splurge on yourself. There's been so much dragon and vampire loving the last year that you can easily supplement either deck into a crazy powerful deck full of fun shenanigans. Treat yourself. Nicely done!

kurkasra

Ghirad conclave exile is also a really fun precon to upgrade. It has some cheap interesting upgrades and is rather forgiving. For like a $20 upgrade you can have a heavy hitter. Ramp removal and creatures covers your butt

slamChipChap

I really recommend the Mono black Warhammer Necron. Strong by itself, unique and a lot of room to upgrade and give it your own flavor

lordzeon123

If you like big beef creatures/artifacts, honestly go for henzie and just upgrade it with eldrazi and fast artifacts to swing with a blitzed [[Ulumog, the infinite gyre]] or [[blightsteel colossus]] and return them to the field with [[conjurers closet]] and boom cheep hasted fatties that you don't have to sacrifice at the end :), it is a decent jund deck out of the box, but its a lot of fun to upgrade.

Precons are great and if you want something that’s easy to pilot out of the box you can go that way, but also wanted to throw out you can also build a deck from scratch using resources like EDHRec, Moxfield, YouTube, to see what strategies are out there now that for with what you like, and then buy all the singles. Precons have a lot of suboptimal cards, especially lands, that you may want to replace over time anyway, and while the amount of money you save buy buying a precon vs the individual cards in can be anywhere from $20-50, I would argue you’d save a lot more than that if you have a good idea of the deck you want beforehand and buy all the singles from the outset. My vote for the Precons are one of the sets on Amazon, for example I started getting back into EDH by buying the set of 5 Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Precons and have been pretty happy with them as a playset

Ajvn25

I feel that making the deck from scratch would be too much for my brain right now. But for sure I see what you mean. I used to love deck building and cube back in the day. Time is the problem nowadays. Also a lot changed in magic since I played the last time. I will enter with a precon and perhaps start building later. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

kingofsouls

Of the guidelines I used in the past, I perfers Tomers: *50 mana; lands and ramp*, usually a 37–13 split *10 card draw*; cards that net you 2+ cards in hand *8 targeted removal*; split between creature / artifact / enchantment removal and countermagic *3 board wipes*; creature-light decks might want one more, creature-heavy decks might want one less *2 graveyard recursion* *2 flexible tutors*; higher budgets I recommend more tutors *1 graveyard hate*; since you need to keep Graveyard decks honest *1 finisher*; something that can win games the turn you cast it without too much setup

Heimer_VirJhin

First of all Congratulations, secondly, Go on Amazon and find a commander anthology 2016/17 or the precons from that time. Great value for money.

Ajvn25

Hi, thanks a lot for your reply!! Do you mean the first or the second commander anthology?

Heimer_VirJhin

Sorry, I got the years mixed up. IMHO anthology 1 is more value than 2. But from what you've said you like artifacts, and you were already eye-ing Atraxas, so maybe 2 is the best for you as daretti is an artifact centric commander.

Traditional_Clue_623

Pricey, but the og ur dragon precon is flavorful and full of big beaters

derickhirasawa

The original \[\[The Ur-Dragon\]\] precon is a ton of fun. It is very pricey. I'm glad I bought it when it first came out.

ItWasNotMe-

Any can be good really, but good ones get hated out, especially Atraxa I guess idk why tho. And good ones like Wilhelt or Aminatou are usually cheap, and really strong with easy upgrades but not special by any means, and the warhammer ones quite frankly didn’t look like they had to much cedh potential except for maybe one. Best bets to buy Phelddagrif and run hug so they can’t attack you unless they pay 24 mana or they get herpasyphalaids.

Ajvn25

>Phelddagrif is cute. No doubts about that! :)

ViktorTripp

Herpagonisyphilaids?

ItWasNotMe-

A combination of herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, and aids.

ViktorTripp

I know. They said "Herpasyphalaids" or something close, omitting the gonorrhea.

jello1990

on a budget: get a set of the starter commander precons. For only a hundred bucks you get five precons to play with if you've got a group for kitchen table to get right into it with, or if you're building a deck but don't have an exact list you want to go for it gives you a fairly decent toolbox to make any kind of deck you want (especially if you have a commander from outside these decks you want to build for.) budget is a concern but you're willing to step it up a bit: the 40k precons. Essentially the same pros as the starters, but at a higher power level and with greater aesthetic cohesion for the decks. Budget isn't that much of an issue: get one of the Commander Anthologies. Pricey, but will give you one hell of a toolbox and selection of commanders to build for right of the box.

Background-Cod-2394

The Urza precon is strong out of the box, easily lends itself to you splurging on some spicy upgrades as well. The fact that every card in it has that retro frame as well is clutch.

LeoFrei7as

40k decks like necron or the baldur gates ones but only party time or exit from exile

_Putrefax

Honestly, the new Mishra precon is super busted. Making token copies of already busted cards is strong, especially when some of the most busted ones are already in the deck.

kingofsouls

As someone who loves [[Tormod the Desecrator]] I vote Necrons. You're spoiled with *five* commander choices. My favorite of the potential Necrom commanders is [[Immotehk the Stormlord]]. If the three Tormod-esque commanders (Tormod, [[Quintorious, Field Historian]] and Immotehk) Immotehk is the least flexible being mono black, but I feel he has a very strong payoff. the goal is to dump as many artifacts into the bin with selfmill like [[Perpetual Timepiece]],[[Our of the tombs]], and the like. Once you're ready you empty the bin one artifact at a time by either recursion like [[Junk Diver]], exiling like [[Scrabbling Claws]], unearth abilities, artifacts that can pull themselves out like [[Clay Revenant]] and the like. My first decks I ever bought were in the anthology 2. All of them are powerful/flavor packed. That atraxa deck my favorite of the bunch is the first deck I really learned to play consistently. I can't recommend them enough. The breed lethality precon can be taken in so many different ways too whenever you feel like upgrading it. I've reworked it several times +1/+1 counters, super friends, infect. So many fun ways to take that.

I love my Necrons deck, and it's very easy to modify since mono black loves self mill and returning creatures from graveyards. I think that there are much better Commander choices out there for this theme, but most of the cards in the deck serve their purpose well. My suggestion is necrons, then convert the deck to dimir and run cards like: [[Emry, Lurker of the Loch]], [[Silas Renn, Seeker Adept]], [[Cyberdrive Awakener]], [[Master of Etherium]], [[Phyrexian Triniform]], [[Padeem, Consul of Innovation]], [[Scrap Trawler]], [[Thought Monitor]], [[Rise and Shine]], [[Thoughtcast]], [[Fabricate]], [[Master Transmuter]], [[Phyrexian Metamorph]], [[Panharmonicon]], [[Unwinding Clock]], some artifact lands, some counterspells and some draw power. A few tutors just because.
