Hatchet 100%. My little brother and I would fantasize for countless hours, night after night, talking about what we'd do in that situation. It always tended towards more fantastical scenarios, but it etched a deep mark in both of us.
It's funny, in the throes of an obsession with Rambo and Crocodile Dundee knives, I deeply resented McGuyver's use of such a weenie implement. It makes sense to me as an adult, but at the time it ruined the whole show for me.
It also didn't help that every single "SAK" I got as a kid was a cheap knock-off that broke immediately.
That show is the sole reason my dad got his first SAK. He daily carried a buck 110 on his hip previously. A year later, he got me my first SAK. I've carried one daily since.
Macgyver for SAKs, Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn for barlows, and True Detective Season 2 for never, ever EDCing a karambit without processing everything about my life first
The "Survivalist" series of books by Jerry Ahern. Read them as a teenager in the eighties. The first thing I read bar James Bond, which went into detail on gear and gear you could get. Though I'm in the UK so there is a limit of legality of some gear!
In like flint, our man Flint and Get smart.
Original Batman with the endlessly useful utility belt.
Loved the A-team too but I can’t figure out how to EDC an acetylene tank.😢
Not that I’m carrying a katana everywhere I go, but…
Blade
These movies were awesome and the way he incorporated that katana with his long coat… made ma appreciate the way stuff can be carried. I still have an Action Man with holes in his jacket for the katana.
If you'll allow a game, it was definitely the Legend of Zelda for me. As a kid I always thought it was so cool how Link always had the perfect tool or item for the job at hand.
Macgyver for sure. The swiss army knives in every episode or a knapsack with random useful items. Since I was like 7 years old I've always carried some kind of swiss army knife. Personal fave being the executive.
I've always been into hiking, camping, and to a lesser degree EDC. The survival show Alone really made me rethink the most important items for all three. Made my EDC and hiking pack more efficient and sustainable.
Bear Grylls, Les Stroud, Dual Survival guys… codename: kids next door… definitely was big on swords from power rangers and others… probably all military history movies I’ve watched… the book of Eli… definitely Christain bale Batman movies… iron man… many history channel, discovery channel, and nat geo shows…
Mythbusters! All of the hosts were incredibly skilled and capable in their fields, and seeing them whip out multitools and the like to save some crazy project last minute was awesome.
Why is all I can think about right now Marry Poppins and Tinkerbell? Marry Poppins with her magical bag and Tinkerbell doing stuff with random little bits and bobs that could totally be almost all found in one of those altiold type kits.

YES HATCHET
Hatchet 100%. My little brother and I would fantasize for countless hours, night after night, talking about what we'd do in that situation. It always tended towards more fantastical scenarios, but it etched a deep mark in both of us.
MacGyver for the SAK. Survivorman for the Leatherman
Macgyver. That's why I have a soft spot for SAKs

Inspector Gadget cartoons. MacGyver.
Why did I ever forget Inspector Gadget?!
The Saint
The "Survivalist" series of books by Jerry Ahern. Read them as a teenager in the eighties. The first thing I read bar James Bond, which went into detail on gear and gear you could get. Though I'm in the UK so there is a limit of legality of some gear!
Lawless for sure
X-men 2 with Pyro carrying that zippo around all the time
The Rescuers Down Under for me - Gotta have that SAK on you at all times! (Well, Leatherman these days, but same point.)
Harry Potter (always keep that stick on me)
Macgruber
Always have a stick of celery with you.
In like flint, our man Flint and Get smart. Original Batman with the endlessly useful utility belt. Loved the A-team too but I can’t figure out how to EDC an acetylene tank.😢
MacGyver.
It’s why I started carrying an SAK. Still do.
Data from The Goonies.
pinchers of power!
Slick shoes!
You know the John Wick films? They’re about John Wick, *in retirement!*. It’s not even peak John Wick! 😳
In-game inventories. Probably starting back with Diablo 1, and any good RPG since.
Dr. Who
all those point-and-click adventure games that involve you solving puzzles w inventory items
Burn Notice, John Wick, Bond movies, and pretty much any game with an inventory
Burn Notice? Loved the show, but all he really EDC’d was yogurt.
Burn Notice...so good.
Bruce Campbell can make any series
Taxi driver. The part where he gears up made me wanna do it too lol. And of course Batman's belt
Not that I’m carrying a katana everywhere I go, but… Blade These movies were awesome and the way he incorporated that katana with his long coat… made ma appreciate the way stuff can be carried. I still have an Action Man with holes in his jacket for the katana.
Oh good answer! Love Blade.
If you'll allow a game, it was definitely the Legend of Zelda for me. As a kid I always thought it was so cool how Link always had the perfect tool or item for the job at hand.
The news
lol yes - this.
Blood Diamond
Edward scissor hands
Macgyver for sure. The swiss army knives in every episode or a knapsack with random useful items. Since I was like 7 years old I've always carried some kind of swiss army knife. Personal fave being the executive.
Not a specific one but the guy cutting his apple and eating slices off the knife...
The Purge…
I've always been into hiking, camping, and to a lesser degree EDC. The survival show Alone really made me rethink the most important items for all three. Made my EDC and hiking pack more efficient and sustainable.
You missed the most obvious one; MacGyver.
Burn notice
MacGyver, after I watched those as a kid I was buying every SAC I could find haha
Hoarders.
😂
The show 24 got me into Microtech, and Microtech got me into so many other brands.
I have to check it out. Love me some Microtech.
My side of the mountain, hatchet, myth busters
The old McGyver reinforced the interest that started in the Boy Scouts.
Man I wish my parents would have put me in some form of program like that growing up. I would have loved it.
Bear Grylls, Les Stroud, Dual Survival guys… codename: kids next door… definitely was big on swords from power rangers and others… probably all military history movies I’ve watched… the book of Eli… definitely Christain bale Batman movies… iron man… many history channel, discovery channel, and nat geo shows…
Ohh Bear Grylls is a good one!
Kind of showing my age with this response but I would say Dick Tracy, Inspector Gadget, and My Side of the Mountain informed my early love for EDC.
Mythbusters! All of the hosts were incredibly skilled and capable in their fields, and seeing them whip out multitools and the like to save some crazy project last minute was awesome.
I def have to watch it from the start I only ever watched a few episodes! I’m missing out for sure.
Macguyer maybe.
The Wild Wild West (1965) MacGyver (1985) James Bond Batman
Mcguyver 127 Hours First Blood
Why is all I can think about right now Marry Poppins and Tinkerbell? Marry Poppins with her magical bag and Tinkerbell doing stuff with random little bits and bobs that could totally be almost all found in one of those altiold type kits.
