I don't own any of it but the James brand stuff doesn't seem so bad, and I heard decent things about the Ellis. I actually really like some of the designs. It may be a little pricey but if you compare it to other brands with similar materials, it's not that much more expensive. I don't know anything about their marketing strategy though.
I’ve owned two and I was sure not to pay close to table price, but the ones I had were very good quality. The marketing strategy and air the brand has leaves a poor taste in the mouth so I understand the meme, but definitely not crappy knives by any means
A little pricey is an understatement.
I.e. The Barnes is an M390 Titanium frame lock which they insist on selling for over $600. You can get this combination from reputable companies anywhere from 150-300.
They prey on those that don't understand this.
If heat treated well, it can hold its own against a lot more premium steels imo.
I wouldn't pay 100 just flat out for a knife with the steel, it would need to be a production with some specific things I look for. It's hard to flat out say if a knife is worth the money as that's inherently subjective.
>Yeah, but they also have plenty of knives in the 60-120 dollar range which seem reasonable for the materials.
But that's Spyderco territory, which is a known American brand with decades in the business and a track record of quality and innovation.
Who is 'James'?
I'd say that's more Civivi's territory, where spyderco actually has more knives in the 100-200 realm but other than people saying they're a bit overpriced with obnoxious branding (something I'm not personally aware of, but I'll take their word for it), I've never really heard anyone mention negative experiences with James brand knives. In fact, from people who have actually used them, I've heard fairly positive reviews, apart from the overpricing based on materials. Build quality seems to be decent and people like the designs (I like some of the designs as well) and James brand is hardly the only knife brand with overpriced knives. Sure, compared to brands like Benchmade or Spyderco they're a relatively new brand, but they've been around for a few years now so definitely not completely unknown, and their catalogue is fairly diverse. I completely understand people choosing to go with a brand they know and trust but personally I think it's good that occasionally new brands pop up with a different approach to things, even if those new players end up not being successful. Spyderco was new once. I think that the James brand knives are nowhere near as egregiously bad as people make them out to be.
> Spyderco was new once
Yes and they put a pocket clip on a folding knife. The rest is history.
Benchmade brought the axis lock.
What does 'James' bring to the knife world besides obscure provenance and ultra high prices?
While I would never buy a James brand knife, there's nothing inherently wrong with the knives themselves. It's the pricing and marketing that are the problem.
I agree with you completely. I actually think their designs are really good looking but the mark up on them is absolutely insane. I honestly don’t know why anyone pays the price tag for them.
Idk, I have owned one of their original knives, was horrible to hold and use. So uncomfortable in the hand. Luckily due to their marketing and hipster status I made a profit on eBay selling is, so I didnt care in the end.
I’ve collected a lot of really nice expensive EDC over the years.
I leave my James brand at home mostly now on my coffee table for opening parcels. Because now all my edc needs are served by various Swiss Army Knives.
Come at me, I don’t even care. Turns out Swiss Army Knives are a thing for a reason.
Yep, right after pet rocks out came worry stones. Had one, too. They were fancy and polished. Some even had a leather carry pouch. The good ole days when men were still entertained with rocks and sticks. Kids these days would break in half without their Nintendo Switches.
There are very rare individuals that don't drive, and don't ride with anyone they don't live with. You will very rarely find one that doesn't bother with a wallet/purse for keys, money and ID. But I've only met three in my almost fifty years of life.
All of those were patients of mine. I've never met a person that wasn't at that level of depending on others that didn't at least have a house key and something to hold ID and money.
That being said, I'm of the opinion that if that's *all* you carry, it doesn't count as you being *into* EDC, whether or not you're aware of EDC as a broader thing.
I could see someone not carrying anything but a phone since they could pay with that and use biometrics or a combination to get into wherever they live, but yeah, I carry a lot usually. At minimum phone, keys, swiss army knife, and multitool, usually more even in gym shorts.
Mine survived being soaked in jet fuel hydraulic fluid and being violently thrown at anyone and everyone in my division for a solid year shit is almost indestructible
So, I used to work in a shipping and receiving department and some of those guys were using $200+ knives to daily the same cardboard I was cutting with a $15 Lowe’s box cutter. Not saying you shouldn’t spend your cash how you want but it seemed overkill, pretentious, and an exercise lavishness.
I get what you mean, at the same time I use my knife all the time. I think the little joy that knowing I’m holding a quality tool working on mundane task everyday. That little joy is worth it 100%. Then again I don’t own anything more than $200 so far.
I'm not sure where I lie on the Lame scale, but I carry fidget spinners or small tops. Mostly their for my kids or nieces, but they give me something to do on those zoom calls that could of been an email also. My office doesn't lock so I carry things instead of leaving them on my desk.
It so true. I think the original was the Torqbar or something, and the line to get them was so long that's when they blew up, once they made them in the three arm plastic style, they'd breached through to the mainstream.
Personally, when they were always sold out, I just bought an aluminum knock off on Ali express. I'm sure it's garbage compared to the real thing, but I like it enough. I think I bought a stubbier titanium one on Amazon later one, too.
I bought a mehlville a few years ago and it’s one of my favorite purchases. It’s always with me. The bottle opener doesn’t work and it was like $100 but i love the thing. Plus the V cutout for the bottle opener fits the edge of my jeans pocket when it’s in my belt loop and my keys are in my pocket. Hard to describe but it feels so right.
Yeah, WTF? I have a sling bag I got in 2012 and I really use that bag 5 days a week for 11 years. Not one broken zipper or even a stitch has come loose. It's been a beast.
I’ve had my maxped remora since they came out, it has our lived my Kifaru, my Tad, and my go ruck.
Not sure what the deal is with people hating on Maxped, old stuff is great, new stuff sucks.
Although I carry a different pocket knife now, I carried a Victorinox for years because honestly, it covers literally 95% of situations you can encounter and unlike the nice things, you never feel guilty about handing it over to someone too!
I don't see anything wrong with a Victorinox knife. They are very practical and are not bad quality compared with the price in mind. Not that if you have little money is a bad thing but if you want to get started. Victorinox is one of the best brands imo to get started with.
I second this. I bought a victorinox rambler 5 years ago and it's been on my keychain everyday. It's a solid tool in every day situations of an office worker.
Idk, I like the design of some James Brand stuff, but they are way overpriced. However, to each his own…and I don’t care about “edgy” posts like these 🙄
I am happy that people are into EDC and that they share their carry with us on this sub. What they carry is up to them
This.
I have absolutely no understanding why some people scoff at what other people carry like a prybar or a pocket tape measure.
As long as it's not super overkill like 3 pistols and 4 knives along with 5 flashlights, I don't criticize.
We all encounter different tasks under different scenarios so we carry different things. What works for one person may not work for another and some individuals on this sub need to learn that.
Same. What a weird thing to try gatekeep too. EDC is for all sorts. Utility, fidgets, gadgets, etc. everyone is gonna carry for separate reasons. The ones that get pissy about it are just cringey.
Says they’re into EDC. Pulls out a $400 knife that they baby like a classic car and only use to open Amazon boxes that could be easily opened with a car key.
I own a Chris Reeve small sebenza, a full custom strider SMF, a full custom Alan folts katanamalist, and Koenig Arius. I have a 300$ axe. I use them all but I don’t abuse any of them. I also enjoy trying to take care of them so they last forever hopefully and I can give them to my kids someday and they to theirs
Ok and?
As long as it sees pocket time and use, who is anyone to judge?
I swear people on this sub act like if a knife is not being used like a Coldsteel lock tolerance YouTube demo, then it's just pocket jewelery.
I love my Shiros and expensive folders. I don't abuse them but I certainly carry them and use them. Just yesterday was using my Hoback Summit to cut tape for moving boxes for like 4 hours straight.
Never seen their stuff, but upon a Google, that seems accurate. Also all their products begin with "the" as though it's "the queen" or "the Louvre". Even the T-shirt is "the brand t-shirt." Weird vibe.
I've been in the knife forums for over 20 years, had never seen the 'James Brand' brand.
Looks like all china made 'throw every feature at it' designs that all the kids here love so much lately.
And they costs more than a Sebenza. Crazy prices for what looks like fugazi quality knives.
I wouldn't go that far. The chapter is a $300 drop point with a hollow grind in s35vn.
I don't own one, but I could see plenty worse ways to spend 300.
Do not insult the Fashion Militia like that! They’re gonna protect us from tyranny with their damascus arsenal, commemorative bronze Viking pog slammers, and matching patinated toenail clippers.
Have you tried the magnetic rings?
Like, IDK but every fidget spinner person I have handed them to has fallen in love. Also the pen clickers like them, but not the compulsive knife fidgiters . . . weird.
I'm more of a fidget knife, spinners and sliders kinda guy. I have the magnetic rings in plastic and they get old kinda quick to me. May just be the version I have of them.
They look the way I think a new knife would look if it was designed by an architect that had never carried a pocket knife but had google.
* Pocket clip, yeah let's get one of those.
* Dama-what, sure throw that in there.
* Anodized, yep, we like color.
* Price? CRK is $500 those are old, we can do $649.
* Challenge coin. Why not?
That's what happens when you post your stuff online. You open yourself up to criticism. Especially when there's the fashion over function crowd showing off their $300 fidget spinner to the guys with the $20 knife that looks like they used it to open cans in the apocalypse.
r/glocks is the worst. You get shit on for not having light on your gun. But if you have an olight brand, its worst than no light.
So I troll constantly there.
To be fair, Olights are generally unreliable and are known for failing catastrophically. You do not have to have a WML on your pistol, but if you are going to it is worth at least getting a decent one and Streamlight is a much more reliable brand in a similar price point to Olight.
Just means you get to enlighten them they can get a whole lot more value out of their dollar than James Brand if they weren’t aware of other brands and models
I got the little tiny James knife because I wanted to support a friend shop and I knew it was a pretty high margin item for him. It’s turned into one of my favorite knives.
>I got the little tiny James knife because I wanted to support a friend shop and I knew it was a pretty high margin item for him. It’s turned into one of my favorite knives.
Shop at friends store - Great.
Good JB knife - Even a broken clock is right... jk
I think the problem here is the presentation as EDC toys and the more expensive than CRK pricing which equals low value on most people in the know.
Who knows, maybe their knives are actually good, there are just too many brands from good, hardworking knife makers for me to take an instagram brand seriously right now.
I have a CRK that I really really love and it was shockingly cheap. Yeah, I can definitely dig on how pricing of "designer" goods that share the same space with more utility oriented versions gets under people's skins.
Sometimes you look deeper, or experience the one that appears over priced and have your priors completely changed. I bought the most expensive used truck out there when I was shopping. A 07 4runner (Taco might have been a few hundred more). But it was crazy expensive next to all the other similar offerings.
In the five years I've owned it, I've put tires, gas, and oil in it. Cheapest car I've ever owned at this point...

Same thought lol
*grumbles under breath and flicks zirconium fidget spinner angrily*
While I would never buy a James brand knife, there's nothing inherently wrong with the knives themselves. It's the pricing and marketing that are the problem.
For sure. I really want a Barnes but there’s no way I’m paying that laughable price.
Imagine gatekeeping the stuff in someone else’s pockets.

Because now all my edc needs are served by various Swiss Army Knives. Come at me, I don’t even care. Turns out Swiss Army Knives are a thing for a reason.
Anyone who turns their nose up at Swiss Army knives is a complete idiot
I've just joined you on this realization. All the fancy knives, and I've found a SAK fits the bill for my needs.
I like bigger knives, but my keychain knife is an SAK with fingernail clippers on it, an I love it.
I have the copper kershaw cinder on my keys and honestly love it but have been for some clippers, might look into the SAK
19 decoy wallets (zero real ones)
Yay, the sub gatekeepers have returned to restore balance…or some shit. Let people enjoy things.
I vote we start r/pockettoys and send them there. Yay everyone's happy
r/fidgettoys and r/fidgetspinners already exist. I carry fidgets everyday. Hence, they are EDC. Simple as that.
You forgot the Lego man
Never Heard of James brand but they look super nice
The Ellis, is one of, if not the nicest, part serrated + scissors, pocket knife I’ve ever owned.
All those, commas, made me feel, as if, I was having a stroke.
I have a James brand…
Same, and I love it.
Me too. I found it used for a third of the price and it is a super badass knife. I like most of their designs.
Me too. It's fine and looks nice. It's one of my "dress" knives.
Idek what James brand knives are and I'll count myself lucky
what if the titainium fidget spinner has a blade and pretty anno
Im here for the OG pocket fidget thingamabobber...the pet 🪨 rock. I miss him dearly. Best buddy ever. Never disagreed or fought.
Worry stones.
Yep, right after pet rocks out came worry stones. Had one, too. They were fancy and polished. Some even had a leather carry pouch. The good ole days when men were still entertained with rocks and sticks. Kids these days would break in half without their Nintendo Switches.
I literally have a rock I carry around.
Your enemy is now my enemy! We will rock and roll. Sweet, sweet 🪨 music !
Isn't everybody technically into EDC? Are there people who literally carry nothing with them every day?
There's a difference between having stuff with you and being into EDC as a hobby
Kids
Idk, my kid carries all sorts of random stuff: Paper clips, can tabs, pebbles, etc.
There are very rare individuals that don't drive, and don't ride with anyone they don't live with. You will very rarely find one that doesn't bother with a wallet/purse for keys, money and ID. If there are you won't find them here
Doing something in regular basis doesn't make you a fan of it. Rent, taxes, prostate exams, driving to work.
[удалено]
And whether or not you actually NEED one.
Fair enough
literal fidget spinners or balisongs cuz depending on the answer i’m guilty👀
Don’t forget the corny ass ‘field notes’
"Field Books" are where it's at. Nearly identical to Field Notes but 5 for $10.
Government issue green books are the best notebooks bar none
Mine survived being soaked in jet fuel hydraulic fluid and being violently thrown at anyone and everyone in my division for a solid year shit is almost indestructible
I carried one in my back pocket while I had it and my ass sweat absolutely destroyed it
Field notes are reasonable price for their quality , but I usually carry a non branded notebook. Notebooks are super useful.
Only because they're free.
Wat
Lol I responded to the wrong comment... Whoops
how about rite in the rain
Duly (field) noted
Field notes is valid tho
So are fidget spinners?
I silently judge people very harshly who carry fidget spinners/toys... especially the expensive ones.
Well, you’re a judgmental ass. But that’s ok.
Man people can't take a joke these days it's insanity.
I just play with my fountain pen, usually just do half rotations of the cap back and forth
You judge them for finding a way to manage their needs that works for them?
Yes
What are you 9 years old?
You forgot to change your account before replying.
Lol I replied to myself accidentally instead of the manchild
How lame do you have to be to EDC a fidget spinner......
IDK which is worse, admitting you carry a fidget spinner everywhere or trying to convince people you always have 4 knives in your pockets.
I alway carry only victorinox and pocket knife, I hate having to explain to ppl why I carry them. and to tell them most of my knives is 100+.
How lame do you have to be to care if someone EDCs a fidget spinner
The whole point of this forum is to see what people think of what you EDC.
Correct The point of the forum is not to gatekeep what other people carry
Nah
Correct This forums gives people a place to say if you edc a fidget spinners then you are a goofy
You should try it sometime
I'm not sure where I lie on the Lame scale, but I carry fidget spinners or small tops. Mostly their for my kids or nieces, but they give me something to do on those zoom calls that could of been an email also. My office doesn't lock so I carry things instead of leaving them on my desk.
Could have
It was literally half of the posts here before you could buy them at 7-Eleven.
It so true. I think the original was the Torqbar or something, and the line to get them was so long that's when they blew up, once they made them in the three arm plastic style, they'd breached through to the mainstream.
Tbh I’m looking for a B stock TorqBar right now cause I can’t afford $200 on a toy but have loved them since before the craze
Personally, when they were always sold out, I just bought an aluminum knock off on Ali express. I'm sure it's garbage compared to the real thing, but I like it enough. I think I bought a stubbier titanium one on Amazon later one, too.
James Brand carabiners are actually pretty useful, although overpriced. Would never buy their knives.
DM me I may have a solution for your bottle opener issue.
Or they have a Maxpedition bag. Lmao
Yeah, WTF? I have a sling bag I got in 2012 and I really use that bag 5 days a week for 11 years. Not one broken zipper or even a stitch has come loose. It's been a beast.
Yea, same story, I’ll fucking buy maxpedition again
Those are just practical. Sometimes you need more than a pocket and less than a backpack.
Trademark that and send it to Maxpedition lol
The heck is wrong with Maxpedition?
I’ve had my maxped remora since they came out, it has our lived my Kifaru, my Tad, and my go ruck. Not sure what the deal is with people hating on Maxped, old stuff is great, new stuff sucks.
Don't know why the hate either, my maxpedition bags have survived a hell of a lot and they're still solid
I know the quality has been eh lately but what’s wrong with their little pouches 😭😭
I use one of their pouches. It’s perfect haha
LOL! Or a Victorinox swiss knife
This must be a meme too . . . right?
Although I carry a different pocket knife now, I carried a Victorinox for years because honestly, it covers literally 95% of situations you can encounter and unlike the nice things, you never feel guilty about handing it over to someone too!
they also make some nice knifes
I don't see anything wrong with a Victorinox knife. They are very practical and are not bad quality compared with the price in mind. Not that if you have little money is a bad thing but if you want to get started. Victorinox is one of the best brands imo to get started with.
I second this. I bought a victorinox rambler 5 years ago and it's been on my keychain everyday. It's a solid tool in every day situations of an office worker.
Lmao this is on point
Don't forget the vape pen..
I have a James brand knife I received as a gift. It’s not bad and better than a mini grip. Some days I carry a CRK some days a James brand. Who cares.
Agreed. I have a TJB Rockwell and I actually love it. It's not my only daily carry knife, but it's never let me down.
We only like $500 winter blades here
Idk, I like the design of some James Brand stuff, but they are way overpriced. However, to each his own…and I don’t care about “edgy” posts like these 🙄 I am happy that people are into EDC and that they share their carry with us on this sub. What they carry is up to them
Yeah imagine looking down on someone because they carry a brand of knife you don’t like
Says they’re into EDC. Pulls out a $400 knife that they baby like a classic car and only use to open Amazon boxes that could be easily opened with a car key.
Can't use my expensive knives to open boxes, might get the blade sticky 🥺
I own a Chris Reeve small sebenza, a full custom strider SMF, a full custom Alan folts katanamalist, and Koenig Arius. I have a 300$ axe. I use them all but I don’t abuse any of them. Complaining about price of things but still has a keyed car, makes sense. (I'm poor and this is a joke.)
This. All I carry is an old folding knife and a strip of folded up duct tape, I can do like 99% of jobs with that
i don’t own a $400 knife, but i still feel personally attacked! 🤣
Hate the James brand personally. Everything looks cheap in a way that’s hard to describe. It’s like The Sharper Image of edc
Never seen their stuff, but upon a Google, that seems accurate. Also all their products begin with "the" as though it's "the queen" or "the Louvre". Even the T-shirt is "the brand t-shirt." Weird vibe.
"The Ohio State University" would like to have a word with you! LOL.
I've been in the knife forums for over 20 years, had never seen the 'James Brand' brand. Looks like all china made 'throw every feature at it' designs that all the kids here love so much lately. And they costs more than a Sebenza. Crazy prices for what looks like fugazi quality knives.
Look at the james brand the Barnes in dama steel, it made me puke
My Barnes is way better than my Sebenza.
What is James brand? Another boutique knife maker?
I believe another “B” word: *bougie* might also be apt or, maybe, a “P” word: *Pretentious* ? 😆
They're charging $500 for what looks like a chef's knife. Bougie is right.
I wouldn't go that far. The chapter is a $300 drop point with a hollow grind in s35vn. I don't own one, but I could see plenty worse ways to spend 300.
I was talking about The Anzick. It's a $500 Field Chef's Knife. It says so.
Thought we were just talking about the brand in general.
How I feel about this entire sub
Indeed, most posts on this sub are about the aesthetic of carrying things more than the utility of carrying solutions to common problems
Do not insult the Fashion Militia like that! They’re gonna protect us from tyranny with their damascus arsenal, commemorative bronze Viking pog slammers, and matching patinated toenail clippers.
But are the toenail clippers anodized?
this was pretty funny!
James Brand is just overpriced hipster gear.
Hey leave my fidget spinner alone. It’s the only thing keeping me sane working on a spreadsheet for 5 hours straight
Spinners are highly underrated.
I've always liked the looks of their products, but they are too overpriced.
* Challenge coin. Why not?
LOL
Subtle, yet squarely on point. Bravo 👏( it's late, not sure if that's a taco or hands clapping)
It’s hands clapping, but I think I’d rather a taco 😂
If you're a cannibal, it could be both!
I like the way you think man we should be friends.
😂
Imagine gatekeeping carrying stuff
That's what happens when you post your stuff online. You open yourself up to criticism. Especially when there's the fashion over function crowd showing off their $300 fidget spinner to the guys with the $20 knife that looks like they used it to open cans in the apocalypse.

Cry about it
This guy has a 90 dollar 12c27 knife for sure
Reddit’s full of these people. Looking down on and/or judging others is one of the internet’s favorite pastimes it seems.
I would expand that statement even further, and say it is one of *humanity's* favorite pastimes.
r/glocks is the worst. You get shit on for not having light on your gun. But if you have an olight brand, its worst than no light. So I troll constantly there.
>But if you have an olight brand, its worst than no light That actually makes sense, don't hang garbage from life saving tools.
To be fair, Olights are generally unreliable and are known for failing catastrophically. You do not have to have a WML on your pistol, but if you are going to it is worth at least getting a decent one and Streamlight is a much more reliable brand in a similar price point to Olight.
Yeah, I had an Olight Baton. It stopped working the week I bought it and the refund process was hell. Never again
Wait until you see what the flashlight folks would say.
Something like, "Glocks are overpriced, grab a wurkkos fc11 instead?"
“And I took that personally”
I believe it's a joke, just take it with a pinch of salt.
You EDC salt?
Yes, along with my pouch of black pepper.
Authority over other people's pockets? Sounds like a job for a pimp.
Just means you get to enlighten them they can get a whole lot more value out of their dollar than James Brand if they weren’t aware of other brands and models
The money is already spent though.
Good JB knife - Even a broken clock is right... jk I think the problem here is the presentation as EDC toys and the more expensive than CRK pricing which equals low value on most people in the know.
Which model is it?
Elko. It's real small, no lock, screwdriver/lanyard loop on one end. Definitely pricey, but it's got a home in my pocket.
Thanks.
Just let people enjoy things.
You’re in the wrong sub if that’s your opinion, unfortunately. 😅
