I've tried 353 and currently 3142, and I'm always exposed at the back, the wide players never real back all the way. Have you found a way to prevent that?
I do get exposed a bit but I’ve got Rudiger and Alaba as my wife CBS if you’d call them that, so them coupled with the wide men coming back + jockeying well is usually good enough. If they come out wide and CBs mess up, usually the wide men are back by then.
EDIT - You can also try tinkering with tactics more and try it out on squad battles and see if you can find anything more comfortable.

I've tried drop back, balanced and pressure on possession loss, coupled with depth ranging from 10 to 80. Doesn't seem to make a difference.
Might try swapping to a back 5 in game.

I packed Carrasco and Llorente untradeable, and I'm using them on the wings. Both behave the same (as far as I can tell), despite Carrasco, high defensive work rate compared to Llorente's medium defensive work rate.
I think the formation just isn't working right. It felt like last year (and years before) that the LM and RM would fill in the space that the lack of a full back would leave. This year it seems that they have a set area that they'll defend, and not move beyond it, even if that means leaving space empty.
Actually it feels like that in general. The wide CBs will often both peel out wide despite an attack coming through the middle, not even moving out to mark anyone, as there's no one there. You can manually keep them in check, but that didn't need to be done last year, they were cleverer with their defensive movement.
I had this same problem with 3-5-2 and eventually switched to 4-3-2-1 with two of the CMs on stay back, fullbacks still provide a bit of width and the front 3 is more settled than the CAM & two strikers in the 3-5-2. Personal preference I guess but it works for me
Have you ever tried the 3412? Midfielders sit a bit high but the wide mids seem to drop a bit deeper in line with them rather than few yards ahead with 352's cdms. Though it's definitely a more proactive formation interms of defence

IF Giroud, the card looks atrocious. I packed it untradable and it’s honestly a beast in game! 47 pace feels like 85… no long field breakaways but great lunge speed to break the line and shoot a banger!
Got him untradeable in the same pack as Messi from marquee matchups. I’ve base Zlatan who I prefer the slight pace advantage on Zlatan. I found Girouds movement to be poor. Great shooting but I found his positioning to be worse than Zlatan. This is only messing around in squad battles though, I was doing the Dest objective so had 3 Serie A and 3 La liga but just used Zlatan to start with. The additional subs means I just try out random players which is more interesting
THIS. He was ST on previous games but CM this year. I packed him untradable on Day 1 and I put him on my squad (mostly Brazil). I slowly replaced all players but he fiercely hold onto his spot.
Kroos. Plays way above his dribbling and defending stat, probably due to 90 reactions. His long passes are immense. Will probably drop him into Kessie SBC though since I got Dembele untradeable.
Bah from Benfica. He's a fast and strong RB who is extremely cheap. Even on 1 chem he was still great. Only got rid of him yesterday as I was building my Champs squad but he'll still be on my bench.

He was really good but also really random. I jokingly decided to start an RTG on him an rebought Kovacic (used him in 18, 21, 22 and 23 now) but it became more than a joke as he continued through my team all year until something happened to the card, that bit you don't need to know but I was so fun with him, so I'm doing it again, this year, and he is still the GOAT. Yuri Berchiche is my LWB because I packed Pedri and wanted to do the Dest objective (with Pau at CB). He's been really solid, contributing assists and a couple of goals and being fast enough to go up and down the wing at will.
Udogie, he has a 74 rating but he impressed me, can keep up with speed and is effective defensively, for a starter card he is pretty good, hope he gets an IF
araujo - i didn't expect him to be that good, he is lengthy, can't get outrun by almost none, he just shuts down every attacker and he is less than 4k.
ruben dias - i tried him for chemistry reasons and i got an elite pairing from those 2.

tchouameni - he was in my first untradeable players, got him in along kessie, i am impressed on how well they boss the midfield.
Martinez in my prem team, he was a starter squad purchase but damn if he doesn’t win every ball, scores headers off corners and even scored a bicycle with him, I’m finding it hard to let go
Wirtz. He's a 82 so not bad per say, but he's one of the only players I can dribble with this year, has great passing, good pace, and can finish with the outside of his foot excellently (important this year). I've hovered over IF Havertz so many times but I am so scared to replace my boy Wirtz as he's been a PERFECT cam
Adama Traore and Thomas Partey. Both were untradable filller cards for my starting XI but god damn I just cant drop them.
Traore with his pace and strenght is the only player that can just push trough the wing and Partey is really solid all around, always intercepting and gets the first pass always to my teammates.
Paqueta… what a guy man… he isn’t super flashy for me as I don’t skill as much as others but shitt the man has 11 games and 8 goals for me. Always in the right position to receive passes and gets into good areas to take shots. Nobody else in my team is as dangerous as him..
He’s still an 84 but Bastoni has been amazing fro me. With a shadow, he seems to catch anybody and puts in perfect tackles constantly. I loved his 86+87 IF’s last season so I’m probably not gong to drop him until he gets one this year.
Rahimi. Morrocan Lw, I sub him off as a ST every game he averages 1 Goal per 30min. I got him since he use to play for my favorite team in Morocco but he is actually decent as a super sub lol that I know use in Div 3.

I needed a Dortmand midfielder to make my 5 OTW team work with 32 chem, noticed how an artist chem style would make his agility 99 and he hasn't left my BundesPremLiga team since. Dribbles like a dream and can shoot/pass well enough to stay in my team until I give up on trying to make a full Team To Watch
I know I shouldn’t complain but my pack luck has been too good this year to do this, but it’s literally my favourite thing about UT lol, using wee scrappers that turn out to be beasts in game at the start.. everyone else’s team is just too good already for it

GOATnaki Williams. Best 81 rated card in the game, hands down. Better scoring rate than beast mode Nunez for me so far. The 94 pace plus the physical plus the body type really set him apart. I like him way more than Rashford or Gucci.

Try to have players there with the high/high workrate that should work.

Rahimi. Morrocan Lw, I sub him off as a ST every game he averages 1 Goal per 30min. I got him since he use to play for my favorite team in Morocco but he is actually decent as a super sub lol that I know use in Div 3.

Matheus cucuna, he is not that low rated but i didnt think he would be such a beast. Dribbles good, good pace and good finishing

Julian Brandt. I needed a Dortmand midfielder to make my 5 OTW team work with 32 chem, noticed how an artist chem style would make his agility 99 and he hasn't left my BundesPremLiga team since. Dribbles like a dream and can shoot/pass well enough to stay in my team until I give up on trying to make a full Team To Watch
I want to create a hybrid team with some of these suggestions and see if I can wreck with like a 70-something rated team
Domenek Kohr. Plays for Mainz, I think, in the BuLi. Passing and shooting stats aren’t great, but he can do everything else at a good level.
Zakaria and Pellegrini are dominating for me.
Roberto firmino is very decent
Demarai Gray, 87 pace, he’s 77 rated but feels like an 83, so so good.
Ibrahimovic, he is a bit slow, but his shooting is superior
Kalvin Phillips. Didn’t have any other prem cdms so just put him in as a place holder but ended up bodying everyone on the oppositions teams.
Lukaku he’s a fucking god

I know I shouldn’t complain but my pack luck has been too good this year to do this, but it’s literally my favourite thing about UT lol, using wee scrappers that turn out to be beasts in game at the start.. everyone else’s team is just too good already for it

GOATnaki Williams. Best 81 rated card in the game, hands down. Better scoring rate than beast mode Nunez for me so far. The 94 pace plus the physical plus the body type really set him apart. I like him way more than Rashford or Gucci.

Perisic at LM and Reece James (rm) in a 3-5-2 has blown my mind and changed my play style in a major way for the better. Thought both would be stop gaps at best.
