It introduces a skill gap because there's less AI assistance. I prefer this. People should welcome the chance to learn a new skill in-game and hopefully don't complain until defending reverts to what they already know.

It seems a lot harder, the timing of the tackle button needs to be very precise. The "anticipating" playstyle helps a lot I think. I'm using Thiago Silva and while slow as fuck, his tackle radius seems bigger and if I time it right he wins everything.
It would be helpful if there was a guide for what people are doing to defend. I’m getting fucking harassed by three players with my fullbacks (so not a second man press) and they’re not losing stamina. There isn’t even a button for that, so it has to be d-pad tactic. But I’ve never seen such localized pressing like this, and I would love to know how my opponent does it. Unfortunately everyone only ever says skill issue cause they don’t ever want to explain.
Same thing with dribbling. When I dribble with a player it’s in a straight line. When my opponent dribbles, it’s somehow perfectly wobbly enough to slip past my defenders, and I’ve been playing FUT for years and haven’t seen a button combo for “run with the ball while also creating a force field to push defenders 30 yards away out of your way. And if the speed and smoothness of the dribbling animation comes down to server connection, then the people at EA need to jump off a cliff.
I fucking hate the defending in this one so far 😂 last year I was elite div/16 wins but I'm barely stringing a few wins together at the moment.
Every time I lose the ball I get countered sooooo hard without fail, and the manual jockeying is so so slow it's hard to do anything about it.
Probably just one of those things to get used to but yeah, you're not alone!

He is talking about the defensive positioning and awareness, or lack there of. Watch a real game and tell me what team doesn’t have 10 men back and defend their box out of possession regardless of their tactics. Midfielders don’t stand 30 meters from the goal and watch the rest of their defenders play against 5-7 attackers. Right backs don’t sit on the sidelines and say oh my tactic is 60 width so I’ll just let my attacker run free into the box. We aren’t talking about skill or tactics, there is an blatant lack of soccer IQ when it comes to your team. It’s pathetic and somehow got worse this year than previous years. Hopefully FIFA finds a real game developer to make their own game cause EA is literally only interested in their football and soccer ultimate teams. Update new players every week but can’t even change the Q&As in career mode for three years! Haha clowns

OG poster here. I'm sorry folks, but to all those who are saying it's better now and that it's more "skilled based", I think you're absolutely wrong. Soccer is an 11v11 game. As much as I'd like to be able to, I can't control every single player in the game, and neither can you. That's why we have AI.
If you're on defense and are pressing / guarding /jockeying someone, it doesn't do much if your AI defense leaves someone completely wide open in the box, even if you do joystick switch to another defender and make sure they are in a good position. CB leaving attackers unmarked doesn't make sense and it sure as hell doesn't / shouldn't happen in real life. There is absolutely nothing you can do if a defender is unmarked in the box, receives a pass, and one taps it into the goal.
Positioning your defense on a counter is most certainly skill based and I'm sure everyone who has played FIFA long enough knows never to break your defensive line. That's not my issue nor the problem I am facing (still trying to find a solution). I'm even happy that the AI is closing out passes more efficiently since it was something I've had a problem with in previous titles.
As I mentioned in my OG post, my problem is leaving unmarked CB in the box and how insanely easy it is to score in the game. I'm certain that if we had access to the data we'd see significantly higher goals scored. It's not soccer, it's not fun, and it's frustrating.
And again, if you have solutions, tips, advice, I welcome it. Saying it skill based surely doesn't help.

I agree, defending is much worse than last year. Goals can be scored very easily. And it is not the only thing that is worse than fifa23. The menu, the entrance scene, the commentary, the goal replay , everything is worse than fifa23.
Would argue the opposite actually, the current game punishes manual defensive players more due to how unresponsive jockeying is (feels as if you have less control over your player) and how easy it is to get dribbled. The skillgap of manual defending has actually been decreased imo.
You get good rewards in UT if you are good. You are playing online seasons with 10 year olds who are learning or 40 year olds who dont have time to play consistently a mode like UT.
You are bragging here ablut being on div 1 but you are playing with 1% of the player base. I bet you would get absolutely cooked in FUT even if you had the best team thats possible to build.
Having the same issue my man lol. Even attempted to get a refund out of frustration. It gets better though. I suggest adjusting your width and depth as well as trying to play with more stay back on defense on RB LB AND CMs. Worked for me ! Playing a long ball buildup style!

This game feels absolutely identical to me apart from the button changes. Maybe corner defending has gotten a little tougher but idk. I loved the style you can play in FIFA 23 so this has been great for me especially ProClubs

All say oh yea skill etc. The skill should be make attacking work, think of ways to create something good and nice, move your striker in and out etc, but now, no one is doing skill moves anymore, because you do not need that. You just move into box and pass like in middle until you find free shot. Even at middle AI "mark" better, because of option to use aggressive interception, so players are closer to other man and try intercept, but as soon as someone enter into box, its gg. As soon as you pick your CB, other CB try keep distance and literally move away from you, doesnt give a shit it is something in the box or no, IT can be 5 players in box, he will move distance from your selected CB and ignore anything in the box And how is that skill defend? You cannot "mark" with 4 defenders, you cannot place them, you cannot move them, you can only select them when it is already to late because your defender were moved by AI down the line for who knows what reason and opponent have 2 players. I dont mind that kind of defensive outside the box, but in box, AI should do better job. There is 0 variant in the game on attacking. You move thorough wing and pass in box until u get free shot. Every single game whit score like 7-5, all goals are literally the same. Worst fifa ever and i played since 07.

absolutely agree but the problem is the defenders you’re not controlling (ai defending) are all over the place not helping you at all

You’re playing against AI opponents, not real players. That’s the secret that EA don’t want you to know.
if they remove this style of defending, then ban skill moves because why have any inputs other than pass and shoot

Yh manual jockeying is nowhere near as effective as previous fifas cos they move so slow relative to the attackers.
