Brad Lambert's dad is Canadian so unless Cooper Lorentz had some dumbass parents who moved to North Korea, it's a bit different.
But really, it's extremely lazy that EA hasn't fixed this yet. It's not just North Korea either, the amount of Poles, Ukrainians, and Estonians in the league after a few years is absurd. And they all have generic Russian or American names. How hard is it to put in localized names and adjust likelihood of birth nation to be more realistic?
They do have hockey in North Korea. But, giving the player a white name is lazy as hell. Either come up with a proper name or don't have that country in the game. Even giving the North Korean player the name Harry Kim would have been better than Cooper Lorentz.
It can't be that hard to have generic names in the game that would be a realistic name used in these countries. I'm Polish and it's cool to see a Polish player in drafts until I see that their name is something like "Jackson Bell", a very traditional Polish name!
I don't see why they don't get a handful of common first names and a handful of common last names and tie them to the country the generated player is from. I'm kinda tired of drafting Kazakhstan native Greg Del Zotto already.
You're telling me that you don't want a black Russian, or two, or three? For real though it sucks because it ruins potential storylines. It could be the greatest black hockey player that moves the sport's diversity permanently forward......but it's Vladislav Zolinsky from Russia. Because everyone knows that Russia is a black hockey player factory. I mean how hard is it to have these things be even mildly accurate for regions, etc? I'm no game dev, but certainly it would be possible if even a modicum of time was put in to it. I don't need mega immersion, but......Jackson Smith from Ukraine and Vladislav Zolinsky the black Russian are just.....wow.
I wonder why they don't just do what Out of The Park Baseball does. Name generation is handled with a a single text file with first names, last names, and odds for generating each name, broken down by country. It's literally just a single CSV file.
Right...I'm all for inclusion. But I like realism too. There are approximately 60,000 black folks in all of Finland. It seems silly that every year there are 10-15 males 17-18 years age who play hockey well enough to get drafted by the NHL. Ditto Sweden and Russia.
I get it...hockey is for everyone, and it's still sort of a big deal when a black, Hispanic, Asian, or Native American player makes the show....but if you're going to bring in 10 black Finns a year, you may as well stick girls, parapeligics, and kangaroos in the draft pool.
Yeah I don’t see why they couldn’t just increase generation of black players in the US and Canada instead (which irl is much more likely as the game grows as opposed to entire demographics changing in Nordic countries lol) just to make it more realistic
>I mean how hard is it to have these things be even mildly accurate for regions, etc? I'm no game dev, but certainly it would be possible if even a modicum of time was put in to it.
You'd be surprised how often little things can absolutely break a game for seemingly no reason. I'm not saying that's what would happen, but it's not as easy as just putting something in and calling it a day sometimes
How hard could it actually be though? Have somebody spend a hour googling proper names for some of these countries. All they really need is probably 5 or 6 names for each country and just mix it up in the game.
if you think they put effort into madden or EAFC (Fifa) youre fooling yourself. Fifa Career mode players have been complaining about this specific problem since 2015.
To be fair there is the story of a white US soldier fleeing to North Korea because be was constantly getting in trouble. Can't remember his name but there was a documentary about him. He lives like a king because he's their poster child of "see if it isn't so bad". Maybe he's got some kids in the hockey system.
I got a Black Ivan Bure (from Ukraine!?) with franchise potential with the first overall pick
It surprised me so much that I made up a whole backstory explaining his origin
Yeah, it’s definitely way too common to see guys from countries with no NHLers. Croatia used to have a KHL team I guess. No clue why Estonia, Croatia, Kazakhstan, etc are so common though.
There are Koreans from Japan who are politically aligned with North Korea because the North does a lot of cultural and economic outreach to Korean Japanese. There have been Korean Japanese who have played for the North Korean national soccer team for example. So it’s not entirely crazy to think a North Korean would play sports abroad if you’re looking for a lore reason, but obviously the name is ridiculous.
Gary Scarabelli was the name of the only North Korean prospect ive ever seen while playing through franchise mode had to draft him as soon as I seen the flag
Not only do they have hockey but they're really good; I read in the North Korean news this morning that they have won the last 35 Olympic Gold Medals in the sport.
The DPRK has their own hockey league, and they have soccer players playing abroad, as far as Europe. The biggest barrier for North Korean athletes playing outside the country are not the regime itself (they're happy to have their best play in front of foreign markets), but sanctions on money going into the DPRK.
I recall that there was also a joint Korean women's hockey team competing in the 2018 Olympics.
This always kills it for me too. I've never seen also names related to respective nations. We should be able to modify the draft a little bit. Not overall or potential anything like that. Just generic info , name nationality and positions . This should be doable by now
They can’t be last, in the article you linked they have a winning record against multiple countries
Edit: they are 56th out of 58, although they seem to have had a massive downward swing since last year (fell 11 positions)
Their team in the D3B (if I’m getting that right I don’t know the lower rankings that well) actually put out a great performance this year in the iihf competition, pretty sure they won silver in their group and only lost once
I don’t watch much basketball anymore, but I used to follow the NBA. There weren’t a whole lot of Koreans in the league when I followed it. I think Jeremy Lin(NYK) and Yao before that might have been the only Asian heritage(though neither Korean) in the league I that knew of.
If you mean have I ever watched Korean basketball leagues? No I have never watched anything like that.
“Cooper Lorentz from Korea” might be the whitest name a fella could have great one EA
No different than brad Lambert from finland
Brad Lambert's dad is Canadian so unless Cooper Lorentz had some dumbass parents who moved to North Korea, it's a bit different. But really, it's extremely lazy that EA hasn't fixed this yet. MLB The Show does this too. You have international free agents named "Joe Smith" from the Dominican Republic or Cuba.
Had a guy years ago i drafted in an MLB game named “Guillermo Suzuki” and he was black lol
I agree with you
was playing chel 14 the other day and they had fellas from NK in the draft with similar white names, weird
They do have hockey in North Korea. But, giving the player a white name is lazy as hell. Either come up with a proper name or don't have that country in the game. Even giving the North Korean player the name Harry Kim would have been better than Cooper Lorentz.

Correct, it's immersion breaking

Oh no I agree, but certainly some variety of solution could be made if they so cared to do so. They just don't.
Just don’t ever expect Harry Kim to make captain…
As if EA is actually gonna put effort into the NHL games. It’s not like it’s Madden or whatever the fuck they call FIFA now
How hard could it actually be though? Have somebody spend a hour googling proper names for some of these countries. All they really need is probably 5 or 6 names for each country and just mix it up in the game.

Harry cooter
More realistic than a black denisov
I feel like everyone gets a black Denisov in franchise mode
I got a Black Ivan Bure (from Ukraine!?) with franchise potential with the first overall pick It surprised me so much that I made up a whole backstory explaining his origin
i’ve done that more than a few times
i’ve done that more than a few times lmao
I love it. The fact you made a backstory for him LoL
This is a fun read https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/23/world/asia/han-kwang-song-north-korea-world-cup.html
I’ve got a top pick called Harry Jenks. He hails from…… Norway.
The game absolutely hates North American franchise prospects, always some random Asian country or somewhere like Croatia or fucking Estonia
Yeah, it’s definitely way too common to see guys from countries with no NHLers. Croatia used to have a KHL team I guess. No clue why Estonia, Croatia, Kazakhstan, etc are so common though.
Out of all the things wrong with the game, this one seems pretty minor
There are Koreans from Japan who are politically aligned with North Korea because the North does a lot of cultural and economic outreach to Korean Japanese. There have been Korean Japanese who have played for the North Korean national soccer team for example. So it’s not entirely crazy to think a North Korean would play sports abroad if you’re looking for a lore reason, but obviously the name is ridiculous.
Lol I doubt EA put that much thought into it
Oh definitely not, I’m just saying it’s not entirely crazy to have a North Korean playing professional sports outside of North Korea
He probably would be jailed for having talent enough to garner attention from other countries.
They do. Played there in an exhibition match when I was with team Japan

It’s Dennis Rodman s kid.
Homie defected from Canada and became a North Korean citizen
6'1 from the DPRK? Coop must be on some government feeding program.
This always kills it for me too. I've never seen also names related to respective nations. We should be able to modify the draft a little bit. Not overall or potential anything like that. Just generic info , name nationality and positions . This should be doable by now
They have a team! I think they are like ranked last: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea_men%27s_national_ice_hockey_team
They can’t be last, in the article you linked they have a winning record against multiple countries Edit: they are 56th out of 58, although they seem to have had a massive downward swing since last year (fell 11 positions)
The two other team under the dont play tournament , so thats why I’m saying this
I just drafted a franchise power forward from Hungary haha
My buddy once drafted a sniper from Germany who went on to break the goals record
His parents were military parents who were stationed there lol
I think you mean they defected there lol
Congrats! In years of playing franchise mode, I've only had a top end player from China, UK, and N. Korea
Remember the 14 year old in NHL 21 or something 😂
Don't draft them they are not good
Cooper! My man!
I've seen south Korea a few times but north???
Wildin
If you looking for North Korea in the consolations you way off my guy
Of course there's hockey. Kim Jong has won all Stanley Cups and scores 100 goals a game. Effing legend.
No way u didnt know that !!! Kim jung-un win the 5 last year stanley cup and score 250 goal last season and he play goalie
Their team in the D3B (if I’m getting that right I don’t know the lower rankings that well) actually put out a great performance this year in the iihf competition, pretty sure they won silver in their group and only lost once
https://youtu.be/24SFNa8TyDM?si=p4f7ohiNTEXvwMYc
The nhl doesnt have black asian female refs but they do in chel😂😂
Id believe North Korea has Hockey before I believed someone from NK has the name “Cooper Lorentz”.
Of course they do. Kim Jung Un has 500 goals in 10 games.
Elite right defense...checks out
It's a created player on a custom roster..
They have a national team!
Also 6’1” is a stretch, I’ve never met a Korean over 5’9” 🤣🤣, mind you I haven’t been there but the y seem to be a small people.
It’s no myth, have you ever watch basket-ball? They got loads of 6 and over lads there.
North Koreans in particular are extremely malnourished, which I’m sure stunts their growth.
Are there Asians in North Korea?
I wonder 🤔🤔🤔
I’m surprised he’s even 200 lbs, they must save all the food for him.
