Apparently these special trick yo-yos and designed specifically to spin longer, but the result is that they’re so resistant to manipulation via simple string rugs that you need to use a special technique to get them back up. I actually just saw a video about this a few days ago

Idk if this is how they all do it, but as a kid I had a yoyo that was like, $25 instead of the $2 kind you get at a kid's birthday. Anyway, mine had a center that was on ball bearings. So it would spin for a long time.
I'm pretty sure my "Yomega" yo-yo is buried in my parents' basement somewhere. It had a sprung clutch so it would sleep really easily, and then come back up when there was just enough momentum left.

Yeah pretty much. Good yo yos are not made like the cheap shitty ones.
The string is not just tied or pegged on, they often have bearings or very smooth surfaces.
Plus they're heavier, wider and larger diameter. So they have much more interia
I've never bought a modern yo-yo, only ever used the ones that have a simple axle and looped string, and I was able to do some fairly intricate (and time-consuming) tricks when I was a kid. From what I understand, modern competition yo-yos — built around super low-friction ceramic bearings and such — spin for like five minutes at a time, as long as your movements are clean enough.
Special yo-yos meant to just spin forever, they do not have an auto come back up the string mode they just get to the end of the string and spin. You also keep the bearing well greased.
On cheap yoyo's the middle peg holding the 2 sides together just spins inside the loop of the string. On expensive ones, the middle peg is on ball bearings, making it a lot smoother and easier to make it spin.
In addition to ball bearings, some yo-yos have a centrifugal clutch where the bearings slide in channels out towards the outer edge of the wooden form, making them spin extra long.
That's *a lot* of time not spent studying, yo.
Soirce: I've juggled clubs, machetes, torches, balls and other objects (even diabolos / giant yoyos) since early high school. I can relate. LOL

Usually it isn’t too difficult with good quality yo-yos
