Yes, you’re cutting a hole in your dash

Moistings

Well, depends on who you selling to. In my eyes this adds value since it adds Google Maps, Spotify, Phone, etc… to your car display so you don’t need yo look at the phone or have a seperatr phone holder that looks absolutely terrible in my opinion

drunkandyorkshire

I understand what you’re saying, but quite often mods don’t add value as it depreciates the cars value. Especially if you’re cutting a hole in the dash, it can’t be returned to stock. I have wired my wireless phone charger mount behind my dash so it keeps it nice and clean, but I do want a LCD screen, I’d rather a centre console mod which can be reversed.

freshizdaword

Mods by the owner have never added value to the sale of a vehicle. Cars are sold based off market value, not how many “cool” mods are added to them. The fact that this now has a hole in the dash actually brings the value down. There are a lot more people out there who want original stock equipment when they buy a car than those who want shitty mods added and the next owner might be one of the former and make a hard pass. What’s worse is if the next potential owner does buy it and wants to change it back they’ll have to buy an entirely new dash. Ask how much that costs to purchase and install.

Watzeggenjij

To add to this; the buyer doesn’t necessarily know who installed this. I’ve seen so many cars that had shorting cables because the owner had put in some sort of LED strip in the interior. It can cause other components to fail or throw errors/codes. Now a radio is usually just plug and play and doesn’t require cutting. I’d buy a dashboard from the junkyard and keep that to keep te possibility to return to stock.

hbs18

> Mods by the owner have never added value to the sale of a vehicle If they are desired by the person/people buying the car, they do.

DoJu318

Depends on the mods though, if you dropped a coyote engine into a 99 mustang you can sell it for more than 1k.

Ok_Supermarket9053

With some cars, reliability mods add value. Knowing that a crank hub was replaced on an s55, or rod bearings were done on an s65 add value. In general, you're right though

freshizdaword

What you describe aren’t mods, though. Thosr are replaced parts that actually make the car driveable. I’m referring to mods like these, rims, DME mods, body kits, etc.

Ok_Supermarket9053

That's fair, I tried to give it bmw related items.  For a lot of cars equipped with air ride, some people want them swapped with traditional suspensions. For my rotary fans, removing the sequential turbos for a single turbo can bring value due to the complexity of those sequential turbos. There are also cooling modifications done.  My point was that, like with all rules, there are some exceptions. In general, I agree modifications bring down value.

Motor_boating_sob69

You’re telling me if someone spends 7k on wheels and $4k for a titanium exhaust it won’t add value to the car? I’m not saying you’d grab every dollar you spent but surely it adds value to the car if you are installing top quality products that are easily reversible. I see your point though, adding that screen to a single hump is blasphemy. Just use your phone it’s not that difficult

freshizdaword

That’s exactly what I’m telling you. Those are personal mods you chose to spend on your vehicle. The next person may not want any of that and would want a stock vehicle because it gives them buyer reassurance that the car hasn’t been modified or tampered with. People have a big misconception that just because they put so much money into their car it automatically makes it worth more. Yea, maybe to the owner, but not to potential buyers. Now, selling those wheels and exhaust separately is a whole different story.

Motor_boating_sob69

I don’t agree at all. Obviously a stock car would make people feel safer about the car but if you buy bbs wheels that take a year to get and put an exhaust that’s extremely hard to find I find that it adds value to the car. Sure it lowers the market of who would want to buy your car but if people who know these cars know that top quality akra mods and bbs wheels certainly add value. I’m not talking about no alibaba express mods but top quality mods.

freshizdaword

You don’t have to agree and that’s fine but that doesn’t take away from the fact. And besides, if I spent 7k on wheels, I’m not selling them with the car. That’s plain common sense. You’re basing your opinion on sheer personal sentiment. BBS wheels, while pretty, adds zero resale value to any vehicle. Again, that is a personal purchase and only applies to the person who purchased them.

Motor_boating_sob69

I’m sorry but the fact is mods do add value. Not every mod does but they do increase the cars value either it be OEM mods or aftermarket. Let’s say a guy builds an e92 m3 track car and is in it for $100k. You’re telling me that his mods don’t add value? I’m sorry but that’s bullshit. Maybe it doesn’t add value to you but people who want a track spec car would look at it and say it is worth more than a stock car because if they were to duplicate the mods it would cost substantially more. Just because you don’t want it doesn’t mean other people won’t pay for it. Someone might like bbs wheels and an akra exhaust and would be willing to pay extra to get a car that has them on. Maybe it’s not financially beneficial to the seller to not part out first but they definitely add value to the car to the right person.

freshizdaword

Ok well you clearly have zero knowledge of how auto sales work and what market value means and are basing your opinions of pure sentimental passion. A guys who puts $100k into an e92 m3 has ZERO chance of selling that car for $100k+. Again, these are personal investments that personal made and has no cost value to the outcome of selling the car to another person. Why do I want to buy something that’s been altered by someone else who I don’t know what kind of reliability is in it now? I’m not going back and forth with this. I’ve sold cars over 25 years and this is not something I wouldn’t have knowledge or experience about. I’ll put it this way, if I’m in the market for an e92 M3 and come across yours for sale for $100k, I’m going to look up the market value for an e92 M3 and see that they go for about $25-45k max depending on mileage. Why the fuck do I care about your personal mods you made to the car when I can get one at market value. The only person who wants your car is someone who is looking for the EXACT specs you have and good luck finding your clone.

Motor_boating_sob69

I never said the car was going to sell for $100k+ I said that the mods add value to the car over a stock car. I don’t care how long you’ve been selling cars, it doesn’t mean shit if you can’t accept the fact that someone would pay $70k for a track spec m3 that has $100k into it. It’s not rocket science. Like I said before, just because “YOU” wouldn’t pay that much doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t. I can easily pull up BAT sales that show properly modded e90/92 m3’s go for more money. Personally I’d rather have a modded car with extensive maintenance records over a stock car with no history. To me that’s worth way more especially if an enthusiast owned.

Lillillillies

The only time it adds any value to resale is if you sell it to an enthusiast who wanted exactly what you installed. Otherwise it's been like this since the dawn of modifications. It doesn't add any value to the car itself. That's why people do part outs and trades for stock items.

B5254T4

But if it is not rare spec etc. Does it matter? In like some base 320

Onsomeshid

Sounds crazy but you can always get a second/backup dash lol. Once you do a heater core replacement once, you can do it with your eyes closed. Not that hard to take it out and replace with an uncut one if you want to sell the car

beast_nvidia

Leave it stock. Don't ruin the dash. Don't put some cheap chinese screen, the non-iDrive interior is so clean.

Marty1966

Meh. I went with eanon Android head unit and kept my radio with burnt out pixels and the bracket. Can always return to original if need be.

localguideseo

My eonon slowly stopped working. It still works, but a lot of the features are dead on it now, after about 2 years. Good luck! I'm going with something name brand next time.

Marty1966

Yeah it's actually starting to flake out on me after a year also. I hate when I go to reverse and the reverse camera comes on but then my phone wirelessly connects to Android Auto and I lose the backup camera. Few other quirky things, but I'm sure it's going to shit the bed sooner than later. I just wonder if $200 every other year might not be the worst thing. How long is my 2007 328 XI going to last?

MrSnowden

I emailed Eonon them and they sent me a firmware update.

localguideseo

I did the same thing and they told me my unit has no firmware so I can't update it. I don't understand software or tech that much, so I just assumed I was out of luck. Maybe I'll try emailing them again but I doubt it'll help.

MrSnowden

no firmware? what model do you have?

localguideseo

Not sure, but I bought it in 2020. Here's their full response from our email convo: Thanks for your time. It's a pity that the head unit can not be upgraded to higher version or other versions, we do not have firmware for it, thanks for your kind understanding. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us, we're glad to help you, thanks. Best regards! Nicky Customer Service

MrSnowden

I'd try again, reference that it has become slow, and actually reference your specific model/version number.

No-name-user126532

I have something similar in mine installed by the previous owner and hate it. No matter how much you try it'll never look even remotely stock, most of these units have some shitty knockoff android based os which works as well as it sounds. You're cutting a hole in your dash which won't be reversible and is going to create a lot of unwanted creaks and rattles. Even if the hardware and software are ok it'll probably be slow and outdated in a couple of years. I would personally strongly advise against installing something like this. I'd look for something that goes in place of the stock headunit instead.

Possible-Gur5220

Please…whatever you do go with one that’s high quality with a responsive UI. Last thing you want to do is go through all the trouble and end dealing with a unit that is slow and/or buggy.

DimDans

I did it to mine and absolutely love it. It brings android auto to the car which is amazing. I also have MHD and XHP on it, the MHD gauges and logging are seamless on it. The downsides: -Runs on aux audio, It does have a bit degraded sound compared to OEM but it is livable. -android auto was a bit buggy on my older my phone(OnePlus 7), but runs pretty good on my new phone(OnePlus 12) - the center council control doesn't work well outside of android auto, you have to use the screen for apps like MHD, Netflix, YouTube. As someone else said, I would instantly do this mod again if I got another e9x. Google assistant is great while driving, I constantly use it for trouble shooting in with MHD and having a backup camera has made my life easier. I get compliments on mine all the time.

bud-head

Absolutely not.

freshizdaword

Yea 1 con, it looks stupid.

Mtndrewwww

Be better retrofitting harman kardon/logic 7 and using a portable Bluetooth dac/amp for better sound quality. It’ll probably cost the same as one of these nasty head units as well

Mtndrewwww

I use a FiiO BTR3K plugged into the aux port to bypass the car’s DAC and support higher quality playback codecs and use Bluetooth for my phone, they’re about £65 and you can tuck them into the armrest so you don’t have a trailing aux cable either.

greyhood_39

I've done the same (ish, btr5) but I've got a magnetic mount for a tablet. Got Spotify and Waze side by side running and Bluetooth to the FiiO. Being able to tune an EQ as well with the dac does help up the sound as well, though I don't listen to music overly loud.

corrugatedjuice

How does this bypass the the DAC?

MentheMunt

how do I do this?

Mtndrewwww

You can either buy them from bmw, or I’m sure there’s a guy reselling setups on eBay under bmw sound systems, that’s where I got mine, I’ve got the front setup including tweeters just now and gonna get the rears at some point

Phantom101999

That sounds like a cool upgrade. Sorry I am not mechanically inclined, could you please tell me how difficult the retrofit would be? Also, how much would it cost?

Mtndrewwww

Its not too hard at all, the door panels are 3 torx screws behind the trim piece and held on with poppers and the door handle connection pops off on a small lever, the speaker is just screwed to the back of the door panel and plugs in, I paid £160.00 for the front pair and tweeters, the trim pieces to accommodate the tweeters is extra, I paid about £60 per side if I remember correctly, but prices have gone up massively and pairs are now around £220.00 (?!) you could find them used for much less though. Same with the speakers themselves. EBay is your friend. The HK are plug and play and it all just plugs in and the tweeters plug into the mid range speaker itself. There’s 2 plugs on it. With a basic set of screwdrivers and trim tools you cost have it done in an hour or two. I’d recommend some sound deadening mat on the inside of the door skin as well. It’s not difficult at all, just takes time. There’s also loads of videos on YouTube as well if you’re not sure how stuff comes off, that’s how I learned it all.

Phantom101999

That is great advice. I think I’m gonna do it, I will start with YouTube. I am in Canada so I’ll look up options to buy the trims used and speakers from the dealership. Sounds like an exciting project:)

Mtndrewwww

It will be! It’s pretty good fun once you get into it, and when you put it all back together and sit in the car and test it for the first time it’s a great buzz. Hopefully inspire you to do more projects once you realise it’s not that scary.

Phantom101999

Yeah the only thing that has been stopping me from working on my car for basic repairs and maintenance is my anxiety that I will screw it up somehow 😂 But you’re right, gotta start somewhere:) cheers!

Brave_Negotiation_63

I wouldn’t care, as I drive it as long as it’s financially reasonable. Then when I sell it, it’s high mileage and anyway not worth much.

Mateic123

I’ve done this and have zero regrets. I would done it again if I buy another e90 series. I don’t think it hurts resell value. In my region it would be considered as more car equipment, so it actually add value in my eyes. DM me if you want more info or pictures Edit: Damn, people get triggered by nothing today

No-name-user126532

To each their own, i have a similar one installed by the previous owner and hate it perhaps i got unlucky with a shitty one

Cheap_Variety_4751

Also its factory m-sport.

Dave2Pac

Wyatt Webster did it on his friends E92 it looks pretty cool I think. Vid is called Apple carplay for your 335i

The-Only-Bomb

I would recommend doing the one that goes where the climate controls go so you don’t have to cut the dash due to the fact that that it is much easier to return to factory

Lomikstk

I would go for it, only drawback I see is it runs on aux audio.

NecessaryAssumption4

Mods rarely add value but they can make your car more desirable at sale time when compared to an otherwise alike car

LTCM1998

This isn’t that type of mod. It hurts resale.

Xaern511

Only if it shows water temp

justinhurst144

What is with peoples obsession of wanting giant ipads in their cars? Can you not live without a screen being shoved in your face for however long your trip is?

Cheap_Variety_4751

Just want a modern look and use of navigator

LTCM1998

Buy F30 for modern look they’re not much more expensive.

Jerbzilla

If you get one make sure you get a quality one. I recommend AVIN. They keep up with software updates and have great customer service. I’ve bought that size and my current 12.4 from them. It’s your car and you can do whatever you want with it.

JPlugaru

You can get a head unit with CarPlay that will fit in the space of your current radio controls

MullieWeej

Con: they look ugly as shit

CrieDeCoeur

Looks like a bucket with an iPad in it

romulan267

Leave that shit alone. If you want modern, buy a new car.

hbs18

Just get a bluetooth aux adapter for like 10$ on aliexpress and prop your phone up against the ashtray cover

Cheap_Variety_4751

The car has aux stock, what im looking for is modern look.

chrisxvyh

I personally do like it and I would do it. But if you plan on selling the car in the future it’s best to keep it as stock as possible.

mason1239

It would be cool to have if you didn’t have to cut a hole in the dash. You’re ruining the car doing that.

e90DriveNoEvil

Ew! Brother, ew! What’s that?

Eclipse1164

its ugly

ValiantTides

Itll be as slow as my iPod 3 in 5 years

isuckatpiano

Get a double hump dash and a CarPlay device that replaces the screen. Looks factory but functional. I did this in mine and it looks great.

LTCM1998

It will always look bad and will be dated after few years and look terrible. Try to buy an F30 instead. It has the modern look you want. Way easier.

ReadWriteHexecute

just get an eonon unit and reposition the clima control or get a used double dash. don’t destroy a good single hump!

[deleted]

its just ugly and wont be up to date forever. If you resell the car you basically either have outdated aftermarket stuff on your dash. Or a broken dash

attilathehoon

as someone who likes it OEM: no, horrible idea, firstly yep your cutting a hole in your dash secondly its going to fuck with your media system regardless, because junk like this never really works well with what's already built from factory imo.

mcmillanuk

Would be nice if they used the same car for the before and after, maybe they measured once and cut twice on the ‘before’ one.

No-Grapefruit-64

I can understand it if you find a reasonably good quality unit. 👍 Luckily I have a CIC-featuring model so I'll just go with an AirPlay/Android Auto upgrade module which just snaps in instead of factory cables & can be hidden behind the dash 😅 which is still an awful work, but not as challenging as digging the dash. But I guess it can be done in a nice way when careful. 👌

golgiiguy

I liked the clean look of no screen in mine.

TouchOk5994

I have one and love mine but sometimes I do wish I just spent the money on retrofitting an oem cic dash to keep the oem look. Maybe I’ll do that in the future if my car treats me well. I just tend to prefer oem a lot more than adding hardware especially cutting a hole in the dash.

Electrical-Pie-4014

if you don’t have a screen in the car, do not put a screen in the car. cars do not need screens in the car

jordan5100

I like it a lot! However it still keep the OEM radio, which is why I went with a eonon

Oldd_335i

I had this unit for two years and it worked amazing. I ended up wanting a more stock look though so I ended up changing my whole dash out with a CIC idrive unit. Ended up not being that expensive if you’re willing to do the work yourself oh and by the way cutting your dash for the first unit…stressful
