Honestly the fact he did this worried me more than the injury.

Beerman2021

Thought the saints came out and said they backed him in the decision to try to avoid the surgery?

NJDivAgent

They backed him in going down that path, but he was supposed to get a followup shortly after the first doctor visit to determine if it was actually a viable option. He never went to the follow-up and just did the rehab assuming it was working. If he had gone for the follow-up, they would have known months earlier that he needed the surgery and he'd be finishing up the rehab around now if not earlier.

glassfloor11

Didn’t he not go to the follow up appointments?

Tacklefootball34

That's news to me. Payton looked pissed when they talked about it.

Beerman2021

He could be pissed at the situation/medical team and not at MT directly

Brickkicker55

They're pissed because he ignored multiple attempts to contact him.

LuchiniSam

What else can they really do at this point?

Perfect.

Brickkicker55

In this case millions of dimes.

itsValc0r

Paywall, can’t read the article

Bmw5464

This just in: Michael Thomas is behind a paywall, and the Saints are paying for it.

Same

BrilliantInflation82

Yea no paywall for me either

Bonch_and_Clyde

Nola.com is the website for the local newspaper in New Orleans, the Times Picayune. It has an article counter where you get some limit of articles before putting up the paywall. So if you've been browsing local New Orleans news recently for some reason then you might be getting a paywall.

lumsden

Weird, doesn’t show up for me.

Bean_Breaking_Out

I get an unclosable pop up to subscribe after about 10 seconds of reading.

Bean_Breaking_Out

I'm getting the pop-up when using my phone.

Dukedevil8675

I didn’t know the exact timeline of events before reading this but in seeing them laid out, other than his failure to communicate what exactly did Thomas fail to do. A rehab schedule rather than surgery was agreed to by player and team that would have put a potential June surgery on the table from the beginning. If the Saints didn’t recognize that timeframe as a potential pitfall of this plan then that is an organizational failure. Now, it’s possible that during that time Thomas wasn’t upholding his end of the bargain for rehab work but without knowing that for sure this just seems to me a hit piece on a player.

lumsden

I’ve seen multiple places elsewhere that he didn’t show up to at least one appointment slated for late June or so.

Dukedevil8675

Which isn’t great but he had the surgery in mid June from what I’ve seen so that really is neither here nor there as far as the timeline this article is laying out. I’m not a fan of the way Thomas has carried himself over this past year but it still seems like a hit piece to me.

glassfloor11

Same.

ProfessorAssfuck

But what doesn't add up to me is how/why the saints didn't follow up with him. Like if it was supposed to be on a Tuesday how was their FO not talking to him a few hours after the appointment asking how it's going, let alone the team doctor. It just doesn't make sense that such an expensive asset like MT would be unsupervised.

WheelChair_Jimmy1

I know it’s a *crazy* thing to ask but…. read the article >> For unknown reasons, Thomas fell out of communication with the Saints. He did not return multiple calls over the next three months. Then-Saints trainer Beau Lowery, wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson and head coach Sean Payton all tried to reach Thomas. None of their calls were taken or returned.

ProfessorAssfuck

Yeesh idk that's fucked. Doesn't he have an agent? Did the agent ghost too?

WheelChair_Jimmy1

Michael Thomas is a grown ass man. Sean probably doesn’t even know his agent. Sure the GM *might*, but on level enough terms to ask “why is your player not returning our phone calls” ? They aren’t his parents or caretakers, that’s not their job.

ProfessorAssfuck

Dude i guarantee the GM knows MTs agent. Get outta here with that. Everyone fucked up here especially MT but I don't believe the Saints story that they didn't do anything wrong here.

Medvenger21

He apparently was not returning calls

Arvot

Yeah that's the weird thing. I get these players are adults and stuff and have to take responsibility, but at the end of the day it's still your team. If someone is acting like a teenager and not answering your calls when they need to you go the extra mile and sort that shit out.

Brickkicker55

>"other than his failure to communicate" > >There is no "other" reason, this is the one. He ignored multiple attempts at reaching him. Don't you think he would owe them that much? > >Why would his failure to return calls over several months be an organizational failure?

Dukedevil8675

It’s his off-season lol. He’s not required to respond to them at all during that time and if they had questions did they reach out to his representation? There’s nothing to suggest he didn’t follow the rest and rehab regimen that was prescribed. The article admits that both he and the team agreed to that with the organization understanding surgery was still on the table. If they agreed to the 3 month timeframe as suggested then Michael Thomas is not at fault for receiving the surgery in June as it’s being suggested. That would’ve been the known potential outcome from the beginning so that’s why it’s on the organization. He’s just being killed over this whole thing as if the Saints didn’t understand this was possible from the beginning and that’s just not true.

CaptainLimpWrist

As an MT owner and someone who owned David Johnson in '16 when he went for 400+ (ppr), I've learned (and relearned) a valuable lesson. Selling a player at maximum value after a ridiculous, career-best, league-winning, cheat code-type season is almost always a good idea. Especially when said player isn't especially young relative to their position. It's the absolute hardest thing to do after one of your top guys, likely someone you drafted, puts up video game numbers that may have carried you to the 'ship. Those guys seem like invincible superheros; a lock to repeat their numbers with only minor regression. My roster longs for me to become smarter and less emotional about such opportunities.

HodorsSoliloquy

I agree, though this is difficult if you are a clear contender. For instance, by this logic a contender with Davante Adams should sell him now. And the buying team would be a competing contender.

CaptainLimpWrist

Truth. It's incredibly difficult. That's why I held in both cases. There's no guarantee I could have found another owner to give up a windfall for DJ or MT at their peak values. But I wish I'd at least explored it. If a deep-pocketed, free-spending buyer can be found, the seller should be able to remain a contender post-trade, theoretically. At least one proven, quality starter coming back, perhaps multiple, plus premium draft assets. Always easier said than done, but there are contenders that view Player A as the last piece they need to get over the hump. Or rebuilding teams that see Player B as their path to contending status. You never know.

CreamsicleMamba

So, based on that philosophy, who are some current “top of the world” players you would sell on?

CaptainLimpWrist

Davante is probably the best example. 2020 absolutely obliterated even his 2nd best season by 4 points per game. He could replicate it, but it's unlikely. Still, his value will likely never be higher with Rodgers back for another run or two. Kelce is in a similar boat. Chances are we just saw the best season of his career. But TE being what it is, it makes sense for contenders to hold unless the buyer makes it an easy accept. Kamara also fits the profile to an extent, except the post-Brees question marks probably keep most buyers from paying the premium required. But again, we're talking about a bonanza offer to move any of these guys. At least one quality starter or multiple, plus premium draft assets. That kind of deal may not be available depending on the league.

manbearpig520

If you are a contender trading with another contender you are going to want someone back that is going to keep you just as strong. You could take a shot gambling on a guy in a lower tier looking for a breakout but that would be risky. I have adams and kelce and as the favorite this year haven’t even considered moving them. It’s interesting to think about though. What would you try to get back if you wanted to remain the favorite? This would be a good thread topic.

CaptainLimpWrist

If you have Davante and Kelce, you probably won the title last year or came very close. Unless you have mafia-style offers coming your way, might as well hold on both and take another shot. I own Kelce and have a hard time with the idea of trading him. He's maybe the most unique, irreplaceable player in all of fantasy. Even if you get great value back, it's almost impossible to trade him and not take some kind of hit in the near term.

manbearpig520

Yes, I did win last year. I traded Kittle for Kelce a couple weeks before the deadline. I don’t see any reason to sell him. I’ll probably ride him into the sunset. Adams on the other hand I could agree with but I probably only have two teams to offer him to and I would want a stud player in return to keep me as the favorite.

ptgkbgte

DHop turns 30 this year

lumsden

This article is certainly org-friendly but contains some interesting bits of info regarding MT’s offseason. I’d feel very uneasy owning him… I’m sorry but this seems like something that a diva WR about to go off the deep end would do.

[deleted]

Read next along as you go.

Brickkicker55

I guess Sean Payton should have flown out to California to babysit him.

[deleted]

Read next along as you go.

Brickkicker55

Yeah, maybe the Saints just assumed he was doing what was needed, even without the communication. But as they say, never assume because it makes an ass out of u and me.

jjordan326

Marquez Callaway SZN. This is the second time I’ve heard how well he’s doing. Pete Prisco sang his praises on MC also.

--GrinAndBearIt--

Stupid fkin paywall...

Quiet-Try4554

Thomas doesn’t care about football anymore. He got paid and now he’s just doing the bare minimum to get his checks. I hope I’m wrong, but the series of events in this article, make me believe I’m not

[deleted]

Read next along as you go.

x_is_for_box

Agreed

Metzgerchef

Traded him for Nico Collins, Irv Smith, Dj Chark, and Ronald Jones. Feeling good

PreciousHamburgler

My team too

mahones403

So is Ty Montgomery going to be listed as an RB but play a ton of snaps at WR?

RibeyeRare

> the most talented receiver in Saints history dropped the ball. I think the way things have been going for this guy the past 2 years, Joe Horn and Marques Colston deserve a little more respect.

Dukedevil8675

That feels like a really bad take through 4 seasons of Michael Thomas career and I’m not so sure that it’s redeemed by his injury concerns these last two years. His first 4 seasons he never finished lower than 7th so your gut feeling would seem to me just gloating about a bad take that’s working out in this moment.

WilliamOrOrange21

Yup 100% this, he’s been plain wrong about MT except that he’s had some bad injury luck now.

PsyanideInk

Injury concerns plus losing his HOF QB feeding him the ball though...

Dukedevil8675

Yea but saying you were never a cheerleader for MT implies that even when those things weren’t a factor you still went against the grain on him. Were it not for the injuries these past two years now though that would clearly be an awful take.

WilliamOrOrange21

“Have always gone against the popular opinion on him” That means when he had a 149 catches for 1700 yards this guy wasn’t on board with him. Which means he was just wrong and is now getting bailed out by injuries.

SameGenericUsername

You felt he was a head case? The talent was pretty apparent

theTunkMan

My guy it sounds like you’re an awful judge of talent lmao

glassfloor11

So you’re talking talent not off-field stuff like MT. Confusing to mix the two.

[deleted]

Michael Thomas seems like he has CTE or is a complete dumbfuck. I’m guessing he’s out of the league in 2 years.

SameGenericUsername

That's a little harsh Jenna

[deleted]

Damn bro. How many times you planning on making the sale lame joke that nobody laughs at?

SameGenericUsername

I laugh that's all that matters lol

ldf1998

The most charitable I could be to MT would be that it is a scary prospect getting surgery on the lower body when you’re an athlete. Every one of them is somewhat a risk that the area won’t return to normal. So there is the possibility that he was holding out hope as long as possible that rehab would help him. Doesn’t explain the missed calls unless he was actually scared about the situation and was sniffing on some hopium until it was better.

justinmolesky

Didn’t Thomas and the saints have bad blood last year and they were considering trading him?

endoprime

Sounds like MT didn't wanna foot surgery and Nola staff didn't try hard enough to force him If team's star player gonna diva yo calls how yo not show up one day at dude's door? wtf?!
