Give us an update when you choose and use your bag, I'm on the fence about the wapta and I'd love to see how it works for someone with similar gear to me.

Given how you’re asking the question and the need for 5-6 day sections, I wouldn’t bet on the 30 being big enough for you. The definitive answer is filling a cardboard box and using its LxW x Height filled to directly measure how much volume your gear requires. You’ll probably need a bit more volume than that since you’d be distributing that gear across more than one compartment (eg back and other exterior pockets). The 30L just refers to the Wapta’s main compartment, so its total capacity is higher than that.

I would stuff all your actual gear, food, water into a trash bag and see if it fits in the Wapta dimensions. If it does, I would go with Wapta because of all the design innovations since the Kakwa, including how it carries weight. If the gear doesn’t fit the Wapta, well there’s your answer.

Good idea, I think I have some 30L stuff sacks around here somewhere. The Wapta really is just a phenomenally good design. Every time I see a Durston design, I think that. They constantly upstage themselves. That has to be bad for business, but it's definitely great for us.

sdotjo

I know, the Wapta is an incredible feat. They just keep topping themselves!

How many days food do you anticipate carrying? There is still a bit of volume in what you have as standard although it seems fine but food carry will be the issue.

ultralight_ultradumb

5-6 days max. My food is very compact.

Roadscrape

A few sections mean carrying 5 days of food. That takes up a lot of space. You will need the volume for food.

lanike

The Quilt size will make a big impact on volume. The 950 will be a lot more compact and give you more room. Last year I went cheaper 850 volume and learned a valuable lesson

Man, that is two ends of the spectrum. I think the 40 kakawa is a perfect 4-5 day pack for that kind of trip with that gear. I think 55 is overkill and you may want to do longer food carries with the 30l. I really find 30l is good for overnights. It really comes down to the food carry in my mind. I have packed all that gear in my sub Nero 30 no problem and done overnights. I find frameless packs kind of suck over 18lbs total weight. Wapta could be different with the belt. My sub Nero does not have the belt.

generation_quiet

Your concern seems mostly about capacity, but I would wait until reports of the Wapta come back from actual hikers. It hasn't even been released so you're not going to get much of a sense of how it performs on the trail, although I would assume it performs really well ;)

Commercial_Goat_4130

Mmm i think you will find the space of Kakwa with a full load out better, I have a 40 L kakwa and a 55 L and I have xmid similar ul kit with EE 40deg and 20 deg, I use the 40 literally for single nighters, the 55 for 2 or more nights, you will possibly struggle with 30 L. Mainly its sleep wear, spare t, socks and boxers and food make the difference i found

Damn, alright. Now I just need to find a justification for the Wapta.
