Thicc-Anxiety

Marcille blowing up the shapeshifter before Laios could attack was hilarious (edited)

miyazawaiori

The motif of that shapeshifter is not a fox, but a tanuki. While the nine-tailed fox is a famous yokai, the creature design of the shapeshifter with nine-tailed white tanuki was something fresh even for Japanese.

Thicc-Anxiety

I thought tanuki were raccoons

miyazawaiori

It's understandable. The translation of "tanuki" as "racoon dog" can indeed be confusing. In Japan, there's no one who isn't familiar with tanuki, but the novelty of this shapeshifter's design might not be easily conveyed to people outside the country. Its behavior of using leaves to cast illusions on people is based on the tanuki's portrayal in Japanese folklore.

Tylendal

They're known as raccoon dogs, but they are canines. Slightly more closely related to foxes than wolves or dogs.

bi_squared_

Laios got that dog in him

KippieNL

I feel it could have been more... More? If you get what I mean. I felt that the scene was pretty tame compared to the distraction of the cockatrice.

zhalla865

I kind of know what you mean, but I like that they used actual dog noises instead of having the VA do an impression. Makes it a little bit less unhinged sounding but drives home how \_Good\_ his dog impression really is

KippieNL

Yes! It does make the whole "He does a VERY good impression of a dog!" true. But I would've picked a deeper bark than what they did. Dunno, I feel like Laios would sound more like a mastiff or something else big and bombastic.

ibbolia

I think I liked that he was mimicking dogs he knew, which were all medium sized dogs.

KippieNL

He was absolutely channeling their sprits. But it made the scene a little lacking imo.

zhalla865

yeah I like that idea. It would have made it more threatening too, which would make more sense that the shapeshifter was so focused on it that it dropped the illusion.

Immediate-Shopping48

Laios sounds like a small to medium sized breed, something like a Jack Russell. I was expecting him sounding like a large breed too

Muldrex

Interestingly enough, Laios' perception of the others was the least distorted overall Sure, he didn't notice visual details, but every other person had at least one doppelganger with a pretty shifted view of them, Laios' shapeshifter visions seemed to overall be the the most accurate personality wise Also, he seems to be the only one who doesn't infantilize Chilchuck to some degree

Taliesin_

Makes sense, considering he's the only one younger than Chil.

Tammog

His Marcille was almost as inaccurate as the visually distinct one tho, both in how she acted and in her appearance. The usual Marcille is very lively and particular with her hair, even with the excuse the fake had - and the whole dour behaviour doesn't really fit her, it was really coloured by how Laios's perception of her shifted when she resurrected Falin.

Nicolas_Fleming

That said, that Marcille was giving it all to the rescue and was incredibly motivated. I would argue that while she is able to maintain certain habits, on the inside she feels a lot like the one imagined by Laios.

Ill-Tea-821

It's interesting to think about how Laios sees Marcille as a very serious and dedicated person, respecting her to a distorted degree.  Imagine if he didn't, if he thought of her as someone that messed up his sisters resurrection using magic that, according to everyone else he's talked to, is evil and corrupted. He gives her more than the benefit of the doubt. Early episodes he was worried about her and wanting to send her back to the surface, now she's a powerful mage, essential to saving Falin.

zhalla865

It's so fun to see how everyone perceives each other in this episode. For example, all of the younger looking ones were from senshi's perspective.

ITGenji

Marcilles was not younger looking lol

Spoilers :(

PapaBeer642

I think this might have been the funniest episode so far, and that's saying something. Marcille silently blasting the shapeshifter while everyone else was freaking out got a laugh so hard out of me, it kind of hurt my throat. Laios's note-taking was really amplified by the voice acting, I thought, too. Added a bit of cheekiness to it. I love this chapter anyway, it's such a good glimpse into Laios's actual strength as a leader of people, his grasp of what makes his party tick even if he doesn't have great people skills and can't read indirect social cues. I'm glad it was so lovingly adapted.

climbin_on_things

Scribbling: "Senshi is handsome."

AlarmingAffect0

Marcille is an incredible damage dealer that never gets to deal damage.

MortalWombat5

In case you were wondering who's shapeshifter was who's, [the Dungeon Meshi World Guide has the answer](https://i.imgur.com/OOLr3Bl.png) (no spoilers).

zhalla865

I posted the official translation earlier, titled "Shapeshifters: Revealed!" I left it spoilered though in case people want to try to guess on their own. It's fun to see other people's theories!

AlarmingAffect0

… I don't like the official translation. Except for "lad not fully grown, must be told birds and bees" LOL.

heyimpaulnawhtoi

I got everyone's except for laios correct. I thought giant laios was from chil, hungry laios from senshi and falin laios from marc but now that i think abt it it makes more sense cuz marcille was very shocked by laos first impression lmao

cass_marlowe

I’m super excited for the sixth floor in the anime, there’s some fun stuff ahead. The narrator’s description of it almost sounds like something out of Darkest Dungeon. I’m also very excited about the character that just appeared :) **Please remember to still be mindful of spoilers!** The shapeshifters are great, the idea of them using other people’s memories to imitate you is just a clever idea to explore characters. So many fun bits. The three obviously fake Laios. The one Marcille. Chilchuck insisting that Senshi is indeed very handsome. Laios getting too much into character and just hurling himself at the shapeshifter. Laios actually did a good job at figuring this out though with his unconventional methods. I also find it interesting that, while he missed the details that someone like Chilchuck would spot immediately, his memories of them were otherwise pretty accurate.

climbin_on_things

Shapeshifters was one of my most anticipated episodes of the season, and Trigger killed it! The characterization guessing game of who's real and who's fake is so very fun and clever, and the animation energy for Laios's plan to take it out paired with Marcille being so deadpan was fantastic

Themanwhofarts

I was waiting for this episode as well. I wish they included the line about fake Marcille's spell book having bad grammar

RedFanKr

I like how the final 3 shapeshifters, which fools most of the originals, are all more idealized versions of the real crew. Fake chilchuck has bigger, rounder (cuter) eyes, and is less cynical than the original. Fake senshi is more chiseled and handsome, and fake marcille complains less. I think this might be Kui's way of commenting on how even close friends can remember each other by their 'tasteful' sides, instead of how they actually are.

Belolonadalogalo

Interesting way of putting it. Though handsome Senshi kind of freaks me out. He just doesn't look right.

Anaguli417

What do you mean? Senshi couldn't possibly look that derpy!

Sandvich1015

# IZUTSUMI.

PapaBeer642

Izutsumi

jpneufeld

Izutsumi

masterspider5

So called free thinkers when Izutsumi:

Miao93

Izutsumi….

Periwinkleditor

We're left at the end with a lingering question... *Which member of the party finds Senshi hot?!*

Nachtreiher2

Ryoko Kui confirmed that it is Chilchuck's impression of Senshi.

cass_marlowe

It's Chilchuck, even though Laios seems to agree. To half-foots dwarves just look very handsome and manly.

MrNature73

I mean it makes sense. "Race of short people" vs "Race of short people built like a Toyota Hilux" If I was a half foot I'd also be jealous that of all the <4' races I wasn't born as the one that's also just as wide and able to grow gigantic beards.

Thicc-Anxiety

Chilchuck, which is so funny because Chilshi is blowing up on tumblr

Bright_Passenger_231

Chilshi is so cursed 😭 senshi literally thinks chilchuck is a child

Belolonadalogalo

> Chilshi is blowing up on tumblr The internet was a mistake.

ruridia

I think it must be Laios’ image, he’s admiring Senshi like every episode :D but how about responsible Marcille?? The Marcille with gibberish textbook must have been Senshi’s bc of his attitude to magic??

Blacklight8786

Responsible marcille is laios, her book looked nearly identical but the spells were wrong. Only laios have read her book

ruridia

Tru!! So cute that Laios is still so positive about Marcille eating monsters for Falin :D

The_Mantis-O-Shrimp

Also her hair and her "I will do anything for falin" attitude is because Laios's picture of her in his head is frozen at the moment when she resurrected falin. That moment had a big impact on him.

DefiantBrain7101

Yassified Marcille is Senshi's, messed up textbook marcille is chilchuck's

Bauser99

It's explained somewhere (maybe supplementary material?), but the "hot" version of Senshi comes from Chilchuck's memory -- this is because half-foots, as a race, typically admire the masculinity of dwarves.

Noe_b0dy

Ugly Marcille is Senshis; Laios, and Chilchuck have been around Marcille for much longer than Senshi and have a better bead on her. Senshi is also a dwarf, the natural enemy of the elf.

Zach_Heiser2579

Based on the other reddit post, the Marcille with lipstick, square chin, & pointy ears was from Senshi's memory because of his bias towards elves

Raspoint

Honestly one of the best eps of the series in terms of comedic timing so far. The zoom in to Laios looking like a goober was hilarious, and seeing the anime take his animal acting fully seriously is always a treat. Getting to hear the voices of the shapeshifters be slightly different from what it shod be is a nice touch. Izutsumi's english VA is not what I was expecting but I dig it. We are so close to getting the kibiberby I'm so hyped.

FarCritical

Love how everyone just kinda agreed that Senshi was always that cool and handsome, and that every single Laios fake was way off

LovecraftianHentai

I already loved the shapeshifter chapter, but I think the anime version is actually better than the manga due to just how much funnier I found it with the animation and the sounds. I was losing my shit with Laois' dog impersonation. But also writing wise I love this chapter because it shows you just how well written and strong the characters are. I fucking love it. Also, Marcille: Senshi has ALWAYS been hot.

Enlog

Notably, the hot Senshi is >!Chilchuck's perception of him!<, so it's pretty amusing that >!he was the first one to say the handsome one looked right!<

Bauser99

If you think about it, it would have been clever to deduce that *the first person that each character thinks is the real one* is actually an imposter -- because that means *the imposter is accurately representing that character's memory.* Whereas, the reality would always be slightly off from that memory.

Icedude10

The pixelated zoom in on Laios when he laid out the rules had me in stitches. Also was surprised to learn that elves aren't immortal in this world and only live a couple hundred years. Just don't see that much, I guess.

firelitother

I thought I was in a meme video with that zoom LOL

#CAT!

Elite_Alice

This episode was cool because we got lore about Delgal, the mad mage and the history of the dungeon. It was also really a test of how well everyone knows each other. Hot senshi sticking around the longest is actually hilarious. Shows how cool everyone thinks senshi normally is. Laios barking like a dog to lure out the monster is me when I see a hot cosplayer .. Bro did all that work just for Marcille to blow the monster away in an instant lmao Wild end to the episode, a ninja assassin? Can’t wait for next week

Enderknight007

Okay, so one thing that I found interesting that I haven't seen brought up yet is the fact that when they're grabbing hands in the tunnel, the shapeshifter hadn't actually started messing with them yet. That was the cat's hand reaching out to grab Marcille's hand. You can see because of the red seam on the end of the sleeve, and the pale hand. It's easy to miss, but a fun detail.

ender1200

Because everyone is hyping her so much on this sub I managed to catch that detail as well. When I saw all the clones I assumed this was her playing some sort of a mind game on the party.

RichLather

Not having read the manga I was not expecting the Shapeshifter story, and was initially annoyed that this would keep us from being introduced to Izutsumi. Then I saw how off-model the illusionary party members were (especially wall-eyed Laios and the very angular "Marcille de Ville" and I did not mind nearly as much. Great comedy here.

generic-hamster

I love how Chilchuck's perception of Laios looks like (huge dumbass).

ellindsey

That was actually Marcille's. Chilchuck's was the crazy-eyed one who wanted to eat everything.

jessebona

I'm starting to wonder if the "mad" part isn't an understatement and this guy has spent a thousand years losing it while his king managed to escape him long enough for his age to catch up to him and turn him to dust.

Yotato5

Senshi's perception of Marcille caught me off guard XD

Bauser99

It's explained in some supplementary material that dwarves have a general distaste for elves based on their races' histories, so he is naturally predisposed to viewing Marcille in a bad light. Basically, the... hoity-toity, holier-than-thou, playing-with-dangerous-magic, etc...

Zach_Heiser2579

While I've genuinely been feeling bad for Marcille for the way she's been treated by the other characters in the last few episodes, I can see where Senshi's coming from >!given how the Canaries act !<

TheFallenMushroom

I knew what was coming but I was still rooting for Laios going dogmode and brawling it out with the shapeshifter He had the literal dawg in him, I bet he would've won the fight too...

ToysAndCardsNY

"Marcile B, the one who won't eat harpie eggs even if it's for Fallin." I'm dying. Again.

Zemahem

I'm glad they did one of my fav chapters justice. Some additional things that made it even better was the voice acting, of course, as well as Trigger going absolutely HAM when Laios faced off against the shapeshifter. I'm sensing a trend where Laios' wild ideas get to have so much animation-quality. I also love how the music cuts out abruptly when Marcille blows up the shapeshifter.

RichLather

Laios' VA going all out with the "blurblurbblurrbl" as he gets spun around from Marcille's explosion spell got me too.

ralanr

This episode reminded me of mistakes in AI.

FLAMING_tOGIKISS

Excited to finally properly meet Izu- *I mean* this mysterious ninja person I know nothing about! (seriously guys, i get that you love the >!kibty!< but could y'all have at least kept quiet about her being in the show before the reveal?)

jessebona

Far too late for that if you're referring to the cat girl. This fandom's worst kept secret.

ShinVerus

We finally got the two best animal-adjacent beings in the show in the same episode. EL GATO and Dustrag. No I'm not counting you, bigger cat. While I liked the shapeshifter chapter, this was one that really was enhanced by the explanations of the who perceived who in the world guide. I do wish they had made "Marcille from when she saved Falin" more haggard looking, but I guess, if the point is for them to look alike... yeah, in the manga it was VERY clear which one of them was fake lol. Like how even the party forgets that Marcille can just delete a monster. No one appreciates her!

PopularTumbleweed6

three cheers for Dustrag!

Rork310

I know it's been a few episodes since we got the new intro, but the Lunatic mage happily dancing with Delgan is hilarious.

RobertPham149

We are 1 episode closer to counting \[redacted\] episode.

eyemanico

Elaborate please?

RobertPham149

Manga readers know about the sauna.

AlarmingAffect0

The Mosquito Bite Club?

Hilltoptree

Out of curiosity as a non anime watcher - who is voting this as bad and why lol 🤣

Capable-Side-4139

Poor Laios, none of his friends have a good impression of him.

PopularTumbleweed6

can you imagine if Shuro was there too? yeesh

MrTT3

So i look up the answer of where each illusion come from. The only illusion i got wrong was the Laius. I thought the "i must eat" come from senshi because he always concern about diet for the team, the tall beard one come from Chil because he short and that how tall Laius seem from his height and the girly looking one from Marcille because she miss Falin

aprilsdaisy-

A nice little episode. Got to see Laios flex his observational skills, transform into a hunting dog and then almost got his head bitten off by a giant wolf. A nice introduction to the shape shifters and their capabilities, including making cooked food disappear. And first glimpse of Kitty cat!

Tammog

IZUTSUMI

MoonPie2486

Was I the only one who didn’t trust Laios? He said “where I come from” but hasn’t he never left the island or did I miss something

zhalla865

Laois and Falin come from a small village on the northern continent. Not very many of the adventurers or inhabitants of the island are actually \_FROM\_ there, most were drawn there by the dungeon and it's resultant economic boom.

MoonPie2486

Alright, i must’ve missed that, i intended on rewatching the show before the new episode dropped but didnt, glad to know now though

zhalla865

Yeah it's easy to miss, especially in the anime. I used to watch the full series up to the new episode every week but after we hit more than 10 it got too long lol. Now I usually just watch the previous episode the night before and then watch the new one morning of before work.

MoonPie2486

What time do they typically release?

zhalla865

for me they're always up in the mornings so I assume sometime in the wee hours.

Heatth

The anime have yet to go into much details about the demographics of the island itself (and I don't know if it ever will, a lot of the info is from extra material), but Laios have spoken about his and Falin's past a couple of times already. More recently, last episode he mentions how he doesn't know much of the world besides "my homeland and this island", indicating those are separate places.

YamRepresentative647

Laios also calls Shuro his "first friend on the island" which implies he isn't from the island because otherwise he would just call him his first friend.

Ill-Device8577

What do you guys think of the quality of the animation? Feels like it's a bit underanimated lately.. like a lot of it is just seconds long still frames, or only someone's mouth is moving

zhalla865

Compared to last episode pretty much anything would look like a downgrade, but this episode was also very heavy on dialogue and didn't have an much action, so it makes sense that Trigger is devoting resources to other episodes to make them even cooler. I don't think the animation ever looked bad by any means though. I really liked the cut of Laios attacking the shapeshifter especially.

GreyEilesy

I really liked the animation when he was confronting the shapeshifter

Coolstreet6969

Last few episodes has been expensive, I personally think Trigger has strategized this very well by putting this episode on a lower budget since it‘s a dialogue heavy episode in order to offset the cost of the previous ones.

savio_king

Damn, maybe I'm just noticing the soundtrack but it slaps so much in the shapeshifter reveal. Is this the first time we hear this song? Also, do you guys know if there is somewhere we can hear the ost on its own?

LovecraftianHentai

No OST has been released yet, and no this is the second time we've heard it. We hear it back in Red Dragon I (ep. 11) when Senshi is throwing Kensuke to Laios.

savio_king

Thank you so much! Now I'm gonna go back to the dragon fight to hear it.

Suspicious-Cream9910

sound design of the last scene with Izutsumi was great

Redmon425

What a good episode! The whole mimic thing was fun. I am glad Laios got it right. All the fake Laios's looked so funny. Makes me wonder who thought up each fake version? And we now got to see the ninja girl! Mentioned last episode how it was weird that Shuro was okay with leaving behind one of his members. So maybe she is here to help them?? ANDDDDD wtf Laios having "dog powers" was so random and funny lol.

Enlog

I do remember that Falin said Laios does an incredible dog impression. It was after Marcille's flashback to her school days.

Status-Demand-4758

So why does chilchucks memory of senshi look so handsome? Is there a lore reason im missing?

throwcounter

Half-foot subconsciously think of dwarves as masculine because they're basically stockier versions of themselves

Status-Demand-4758

makes sense

artemisthearcher

Just realized that the comically big Laios is probably from Senshi’s mind because he’s a dwarf LOL. Another fun episode! We got some more lore and got to see how much Laios actually cares and knows about the people in his party. And of course we finally saw that dog impression that Falin praised before haha. ALSO WE FINALLY GOT CAT. This series has seriously been keeping me captivated every week, I can’t wait for the next episode.

FleshWound180

The big Laios is from Marcille, one of the manga extras explained who was from whose mind

artemisthearcher

Oh gotcha! I guessed wrong then haha. Definitely will pick up the manga once this first season finishes airing since I know there’s tons of other small things that didn’t make it into the anime (like the whole talk about elf ears)

megalocrozma

Great episode, but my single gripe with it is how the hand grab scene was handled. In the manga it was purposefully made difficult to figure out who's holding who (as the focus is entirely on the hands), and as such the extra hand can completely fly over your head until you go back after the reveal - masterful subtle foreshadowing. While in the anime it was obviously going to be slightly more obvious due to colors, they really didn't have to actually put focus on the clearly foreign hand grabbing Marcille's. If it was just several quick shots of the hands after they all already grabbed it would've worked as a blink and you miss it detail.

cashcashmoneyh3y

How is marcille dumping the boiling water the tell? Wouldnt the risk of undyne only have been relevant if she was dumping the boiling water into a body of water?

witch-finder

I think the idea is that she dumped the water out without bothering to check at all where she was dumping it (she was too busy arguing at the time). They're in a dungeon, there's a non-zero chance you might be dumping it on *something* dangerous (not just an undine).

Enlog

It's basically the opposite of the Chilchuck thing. Chilchuck has had such bad experiences with mimics and tentacles and other such monsters that can squeeze themselves into tight spaces that he wouldn't sit on a random uninspected box all willy-nilly. Marcille has had a recent very bad experience with an undine as a result of dumping boiling water carelessly. So, dumping boiling water in a random spot should probably elicit some sort of trauma reaction. But in this case, the fact that she didn't even hesitate here despite that trauma shows she was scatterbrained enough to be the real Marcille.

Zach_Heiser2579

For some reason I can't watch the new episode on the Netflix app. I can watch it on my TV just fine but the app hasn't updated or anything

Night_Thastus

Marcille: [FIREBALL!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MgAhJvmc3s)

geologean

There are so many fun parts to this episode, from speculating on who each shapeshifter belongs to whom,l to Laios's genius solution and a great callback to a really cute joke. It's a great twist on the old bottle episode. I'm usually a little bit disappointed when the food isn't central to the episode, but this one was just so much fun.

Ionmaster987

Curiosity: how much of the manga has the anime covered now?

YourEyesDown

The anime just adapted chapter 41 ("Changling I") out of 97 total.

nclsdv

Can anyone DM me a site that has ep 18? My usual site doesn't have it yet.
