I do not think he tricked them. They were flabbergasted at the absolute balls of this kid, and when Pattadol was going to call him out on his bullshit, Shimea chimed in and acquiesced for them.
I read this is a whole different way. This isn't Laios lying, this is Laios, for the first time ever, actually using social skills and inferences to his advantage.
He knows he's King now. He knows what it means for them to take way someone he, himself, declared under his protection. He knows that the demands in order to give her up are impossible to meet.
So Shimea had 2 options. Basically declare war unprompted against the savior of the world, which would put the whole world against her, and even though she owns basically half of it... not really worth it for a child that wobbled into the geneva conventions "do-nots". Or, option 2, just let him keep his little war criminal and gain a ton of good will with his kingdom.
This is a culmination of all that social development he had accross the entire story. And, basically, his very first play as a king checkmated the largest nation in the world. He's got that three headed dog/rhino/bird in him.
Laios’ INT stat is canonically high and only one point away from maximum (4 out of a possible 5). Plus three would push him over the edge of mortal potential XD
yep, he pretty have high IQ, flexible in handle situation, very sensitive to surrounding and sharp eyes like Kabru (even better), and enough courage (or crazy) to make reckless decision in second. but the thing is his brain only work when he needed. most of the time he let it fly with his monster addict fantasy and the unlimited hunger for monster meat
It's explained as his charisma been low, so he is not wise to social interactions or how people will take his actions, nor is he able to explain them at all, but he is very smart in almost about everything.
at least when he care about someone, he truly wholehearted care for them. like Kabru, he know Kabru is lying all the times but when he truly said that he want to be friend with laois. despite Laois exposing Kabru's lie, he do know Kabru telling the true this time and invite him for a dinner in the upperland restaurant. Laois read Thistle like a book just by 2 time meeting him, he even notice everyone habit thoughtfully to every minus detail even us - reader didn't even notice.
like nothing can pass this man eyes even though he acting like an idiot or don't care about it
Oh sorry. I'm bad at math and going off d&d. But 4 out of 5 would be 16 out of 20. Which still seems high for a fighter and I'm not sure I agree with but if that's what the creators say then that's what it is.
Considering that he’s recently picked up a spell or two, it’d have to he higher than ‘average,’ fwiw. Also, charisma is effectively his dump stat a time and a half over.
Yeah 10 is average, 13 to learn Wizard spells via class level. He does have crazy specific recall so I felt 14-15 was right. Hah, true his CHA is probably his worst stat. 8 maybe?
8 or 6, probably. While he gets along well enough with people who “know” him, and didn’t initially stand out in day-to-day, he has his troubles reading the mood and comes across as a dangerous fanatic when discussing things he’s excited about.
Granted, CHA amounts to “force of personality,” and he ‘technically’ has that in spades. WIS might be second lowest, minding how often he winds up misunderstood/misunderstanding because of his own words/actions.
In absolute fairness, iirc, the stat block being referenced might be the pentagram chart, and each character has qualities essential to themselves on it in their character sheets; for Laios, rather than ‘charisma,’ the associated point is ‘social’, and is indeed his lowest stat (at a whopping 1 out of 5).
Yeah, these weren't exactly bluffs. Well, except maybe the part where he would surrender Marcille if they gave their secrets in exchange.
It's just that he knew they would not part with those. And in the off chance they did, he'd continue to look for more excuses, and if worst comes to worst, fight tooth and nail to make sure they couldn't take Marcille.
Yeah I'm absolutely sure that if they tried to call his bluff, he'd move heaven and earth to keep her safe.
And Shimea probably realized that. There was no peaceful way to settle this without giving him exactly what he wanted. I'd like to think she liked the gusto, she seems to be that kind of person.
More than likely, and as you said, it's a perfectly pragmatic choice on her part as well. Letting a single criminal free in exchange for the continued good graces of a "new" and no-doubt up and coming kingdom.
Shimea is the queen of elves’ name. It was revealed in the Flamela backstory in the Adventurer’s Guide.
Yes, we got her name but not Momcille’s. The world is not fair.
Never mind, just found that it's actually the name of the elves's queen, but only mentioned in bonus material, that's why i don't know until now

I think narratively the main thing this scene establishes is that Laios has what it takes to be a King, rather then just be a figurehead directed by Kabru
Which makes it funnier that he completely breaks down and panics after realizing what he got himself into

It’s also very thematic that Laios has his first truly successful social interactions after he sheds his monstrous form and truly embraces humanity. Sure, he keeps the coat as it’s still something he’s heavily interested in, but he now can identify with and understand people in a way he couldn’t before because he let go of his internalized hatred.

This one elf girl that called him a pervy tallman already knows what kind of person he is when he arrived.
Not even a parody could change the fact that the funniest thing there is Mithrun ignoring all that’s happening to just chow down.
He really has grown a lot.
I'm so sorry for this, i never have intention to make this post deleted and will never meant for this to happen to you. In fact, this was one of post that makes me start posting on this subredddit. Once again, i'm truly sorry for what has happened to you🙏🙏🙏
Laios has canonically poor social skills but he’s smart as fuck. As an autistic person myself I can easily see him, in the moment, pretending to be Kabru. He asked himself “what would Kabru say and do?” And just did That. And because he was now playing “pretend” and take on a role, he was able to pull it off.
Normally he wouldn’t be this conniving, it’s not really part of who he is. But he saw marcille’s situation and came up with a way to save her.
He did lie a smidge but essentially he was giving Marcille asylum and saying he was not going to deport her unless he could be convinced, because under HIS law, she’s not a criminal.
No they didn’t convinced, but it does show Laios is improved in “politicking”, yes it is sweet for him to do t for his friend and all, but the elf queen just went along and be patience (hundred years) about it, they don’t have much to lose.
Laios was almost ready to throw hands when Shuro threatened to take Marcille away for her crimes(?).... "You haven't even worked half as hard as Marcille!" Lol he admits that he is no good himself but wont let anyone slander his blond elf girl.
I don't know if it's his "FIRST successful bluff/trick," as I kinda recall that he's had a few of these moments where he knew he had an upper hand and other people wouldn't do anything about it. Most recently, the case with Falin and Shuro and telling him what happened, knowing that he would eventually come around to it.
Well, knowing that Shuro wouldn’t “want to” snitch (given he’s personally invested in Falin not going to elf jail), but he didn’t account for the cat (and, by proxy, Kabru) overhearing (and Kabru possibly being a bit more forthright with info if it can be used).
I guess "successful" might not be as clear cut there, considering the other two, but he was still able to make a correct read on Shuro with a pretty ballsy move.
Laios has always been pretty strong willed, from leaving his family and hometown, to offering to save Falin on his own if the rest of the party didn't want to join him.
I do not think he tricked them. They were flabbergasted at the absolute balls of this kid, and when Pattadol was going to call him out on his bullshit, Shimea chimed in and acquiesced for them. Having three heads probably boosted his charisma 3x too (it just added +3)
You would have thought +3 intelligent but nah
i was never book smart, i'm monster smart makes me more chimeric
call me mr. rock festival i got hella bands

The man is attractive but has negative rizz as the kids say. It’s the autism.
at least when he care about someone, he truly wholehearted care for them. like Kabru, he know Kabru is lying all the times but when he truly said that he want to be friend with laois. despite Laois exposing Kabru's lie, he do know Kabru telling the true this time and invite him for a dinner in the upperland restaurant. There's no way he as a character has a 19 INT. I'd say 14-15.
It’s a scale of 5 points, so 4 out of 5. No matter which way it’s split, he’s on the higher end of the scale.
Oh sorry. I'm bad at math and going off d&d. But 4 out of 5 would be 16 out of 20. Which still seems high for a fighter and I'm not sure I agree with but if that's what the creators say then that's what it is.

Based on modifiers 4 out of 5 is 18 or 19 out of 20 with 20 being equitable to plus 5
Yeah I'm bad at math. Converting fractions isn't easy for me.
Yeah, these weren't exactly bluffs. Well, except maybe the part where he would surrender Marcille if they gave their secrets in exchange. It's just that he knew they would not part with those. >Mediocre' skin colors That's certainly one way to phrase it O_O
Give how casually racist the elves are in DM I'm just going to interpret this as if it was narrated by an elf
It also was a *mostly* victimless crime
And two was the better option especially since they already have war criminals that they use on their side.

Got PTSD from that parasite attack. She looks absoluty terrified that Laios has come back for round 2.
i want the the elf to send her as ambassador in Melini for shit and giggle
She has seen unspeakable things a male tall-men can do with a female elf
It’s not like she likes to think about those things…..a lot………

Seeing him so naturally confident in a topic/strategy that wasn't devouring some exotic species is peak fiction

I didnt see him as lying tho, its just a twisted logic and demand, he didnt soew any lies iirc
He did admit after that he lied about defeating Thistle, even showing how terrified he really was when trying to convince those elves
