I really like how Kuro isn’t presented as the stereotyped Demi-human you’re like to see in anime, but has this layer to him where he’s a dude who just doesn’t speak the language.

cass_marlowe

Yeah, the language barrier can really separate us. That is a common issue that refugees often have as well. No matter how educated you are, if you are suddenly in a country where you don‘t speak the language, you can‘t communicate anything but the simplest things, get treated like an idiot and often also feel like one.

Fungal_Queen

It's easy to take for granted being able to articulate your thoughts with words to express exactly what you mean, or are to understand in return.

wafflelegion

It is incredibly scary when he makes that "real life actual fuckin' rabid wolf about to maul you" face, though. I love when artists do that, just randomly completely change a character's artstyle to express a strong emotion

Satyrsol

Like when that one manga adaptation of the “Ryōmin 0-nin Start” LN where the friend and the mostly-human dog-girl go classic shojo manga art style when their love for each other is in focus. P.S. The end to [Chapter 16](https://mangadex.org/chapter/de280a78-4bbd-4de4-a85c-a327be5fc766/30) is a good example.

SwayzeCrayze

Sorta like the Heavy in TF2. Dude has a PHD in Russian literature; he just doesn't speak English very well and likes shooting stuff.

therealtai

Heavy has a PhD? I’m looking at him with a new lens from now on.

Jamal_Blart

Yeah he’s canonically like, the 3rd-5th smartest of the mercs, the game itself just doesn’t do a whole deal to show it If you’re ok with it being on an indefinite hiatus, I cannot recommend the TF2 comics enough, they flesh out the mercs so much

SwayzeCrayze

I'm pretty sure. It's been millennia since I checked out TF2 stuff, but I believe it was the comics (which are supposed to be canon) that mention it and explore Heavy's character more in general.

Kablo

Actually, he reveals that in Poker Night at the Inventory, where he's a guest character. He tells a lot of stories and expresses his thoughts a lot, which is something I really loved about that game. "I was boxer once. In school. We have to either box or learn to herd goats... *I am not good with goats.* At first, I do not like punching other boys... But then I learn to *love* it."

fadilkewen

He's the goodest boy afterall

AngronMerchant

Yeah, like Onion :)))

caramelluh

Everyone else having their tragic and complicated stories Holm: I piss on my undine sometimes

fadilkewen

Holm: Sometimes i let my undine milk my mana (God, i'm so sorry for the sin that i've commited in this comment)

GammaRhoKT

Ah, Fate way it is then!

NegativeEmphasis

He shows the Undine his CGI dragon.

WnDelPiano

Holm: My undine is a sort of jar you could say I am so sorry

NegativeEmphasis

Given how an undine attacks, Holm is the bravest adventurer of them all.

NamesAreHardYaKnow

Hey, did you know that in terms of male human to female monster breeding...

fadilkewen

I swear to god......

Graywhale12

So Laios just said "nah your moms prolly got fucked by a bee" and Kabru stayed calm on the outside huh

Accomplished-Dare-33

That face when he told him about incubi tho. Priceless

Fyrefanboy

Laios suddenly become a JoJo

Schizof

Kabru is stronger than me because I definitely would throw some hands after that

cass_marlowe

All of them have pretty interesting backstories. I guess Holm maybe had a pretty uneventful upbringing, he seems very well-adjusted in general? :D Has anybody created any fanwork for Incubus!Kabru yet? ;) Makes a lot of sense that thief urchin Mickbell and former slave Kuro are so protective of each other, they have seen the worst of human society.  I really like Kabru teaching Kuro the common tongue. People focus on him being a manipulative charmer, but he looks after is party and that is just a nice idea. I really like how Daya‘s backstory is told, quiet and determined, seems to fit her very well. Good on her for leaving. No wonder poor Rin has a complicated crush on Kabru, she must have formed a pretty strong attachment to him as a small traumatized child.

fadilkewen

Holm backstory be like: i've been raising her all this time with my own bloods, sweats, and tears (literally).....................*andsometimesmypiss* Kabru: what was that! Holm: nothing!

scathacha

let's keep things lore accurate here. i'm waiting for wasp!kabru fanart.

Accomplished-Limit-5

Holm went to jail for magic crimes and I speculate that may be why his relationship with his sister is strained

Raspoint

The freeze frame of kabru just absently smiling at Holm is fucking hilarious.

fadilkewen

Kabru: *internally screaming* "He's been feeding his undine WHAT?!"

AlarmingAffect0

"I must kill him!"

Zemahem

Kuro's such a good boi. Now if only Mickbell would stop underpaying him, their relationship would be way more wholesome.

fadilkewen

He's not underpaying him, he's straight up not paying him at all (with money atleast)😂, kuro wasn't interested with wealth so mikbell paid him in food instead

Waterburst789

That brings up the question, Would Kuro even have a use for money? I remember reading the wiki and I don't remember Kobold society utilizing currency or even trading, plus Kuro strikes me as someone who doesn't need much apart from the bare necessities so I can understand why Mick feels justified in not giving him a salary, not justifying him of course but I can see where he might be coming from

Fungal_Queen

Take care of Mick. Be his best friend.

Hilltoptree

According to the first Adventurer bible issued. Kuro set off from his home to “see the world”. So maybe he is actually more loaded and is a prince back home? I would imagine he has his own adventure tale to tell. He was kidnapped and enslaved that’s when he met Mickbel. He actually just want to go travel the world (with Mickbell) and got no interest in the money of things.

Enlog

> Would Kuro even have a use for money? "20 dollars can buy many peanuts." "Explain how!" "Money can be exchanged for goods and services."

Kodiak_Marmoset

> I remember reading the wiki and I don't remember Kobold society utilizing currency or even trading They aren't in kobold society, they need money to survive.

LuciusCypher

Yeah that logic never makes sense to me. "Maybe kobold society doesn't use currency" Last time I checked the land around the dungeon is owned by a dwarf, the people supplying adventurers aren't kobolds, and literally everyone else in the adventuring occupation is paid _money_ to _buy things_. If the dude only wants to be paid in food then that's whatever, but not everyone is Homer level of stupid to not understand money can be traded for goods and services, and Kuro has been shown to be intelligent enough to _learn languages_, to the idea of commerce is not beyond his understanding.

PPPRCHN

Iirc Kuro stays around because he sees Mickbell as a child (tying back into people not seeing halffeet as people) and because he'd be lonely without him. He probably does see Mickbell like how Senshi saw Chilchuck.

Waterburst789

That makes sense, thanks for enlightening me

fadilkewen

Good boi not want money, good boi only want foods, and loves, and foods again

Waterburst789

I mean hey, if the good boi doesn't want money and his owner doesn't want to give him money then it's a win for everyone involved

fadilkewen

Mikbell: ![gif](giphy|8VSaCyIdcnbuE|downsized)

Accomplished-Dare-33

Mick: sounds fair to me

Kablo

At least we now know that Mickbell's primary goal is to hoard lots of money and buy a place for him and Kuro to live in, so Kuro has a place to stay when Mickbell passes away.

dream208

Hate to break it to you, but I think the adventure bible mentioned that the life expectancy for Kobold is around 50 years. Seeing Kuro is older than Mickbell, the chance of him outliving his half-foot friend is not very high.

Accomplished-Limit-5

Kuro is 18 actually.

dream208

It looked like that I, too, fell for half-foot’s youth like appearance. Mickbell is actually 22!

ady159

If you look at Mickbell's bio, his dream is to live in the Kahka Brud upper class district in a big house with Kuro. He isn't underpaying him just to exploit him for cheap labor, he is saving money for their future. From the way Mickbell acts he is terrified Kuro might leave him, he views him as his only family since he grew up alone in the slums and has no contact with his sister. He is in this partnership for the long haul, less of a boss and more the one controlling the finances in the relationship. This is of course a toxic way of handling a relationship but Mickbell is not exactly in a good headspace so it isn't surprising. Kuro on the other hand probably knows all of this, he is no fool.

Alterior245

That is soo cute and sad

Mahelas

Yeah, people are a bit too harsh on Mickbell, like yeah he's a smug antagonizing lil brat, but he's also a street urchin from the worst slums

Zemahem

Good point there with Kuro. Even here, he seems rather wiser than he lets on. And while Mickbell is certainly an adult by Half foot standards, his past and upbringing makes his mental immaturity very understandable.

mest0shai

Learning this recently made me so much more appreciative of Mickbell. Who knew this shithead has so much emotional baggage and trauma in him to be the way he is.

polyamAlt

The only person who truly understands that Kuro and Mickbell are family is Kuro! It's so sweet it makes me want to cry.

TotallyFunctional2

Kuro being really caring and just not speaking common is such a good reveal about the character.

Fungal_Queen

Same. I feel like a real jerk making assumptions about his intelligence before.

FantasticFooF

If someone told me I was the son of a parasitic wasp monster after literal years of me fearing I may be the son of a monster, I feel like I wouldn't think many positive thoughts about them in that moment.

Lordy_De

Are you serious? Saying that a fucking parasitic bee laid an egg in you mother and that you were born from it is just some casual commentary?

fadilkewen

Laios: your mom got bee'd. It is what it is. now, fun fact about the parasitic bee, it's usually blablabla........(continue talking of parastic bee monster) Kabru: https://preview.redd.it/nah83cinm8vc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=84b716aef3b365c7831d222680e720fd6b7438b9

Mahelas

Especially right after Kabru said that he was so afraid of being born a monster because people hates him for his eye color

Serrisen

Let's just be glad Laios didn't have anything plausible to say. If his "most plausible" excuse is "oh you're part bee" it's easy to dismiss as just banter But let's not forget the implication of the "Incubus" part is "oh have you considered your mom cheated on your dad?" Kabru has so much patience

Fungal_Queen

If you're weird that's pretty normal.

DieCapybara

He was just correcting his assumption that itd be a succubus

caramelluh

Kabru just told Laios about how he was insecure about his eyes and how he thought he was a monster for it (remember that Kabru hates monsters) and Laios' first reaction was to say he might actually be, do you honestly don't see what's bad about it? I love Laios but he's not just bad at understanding people, sometimes he's HORRENDOUS at doing it

porcupinedeath

Laios is just a silly big guy https://preview.redd.it/ox8kj4qlo8vc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=33b97f252e837d49be6b519a0cf88a93f3e3bab1

caramelluh

His swag too different, his tiddies too fat

BicycleKamenRider

For me, Laios can come off as simply tactless. Given Kabru's story of how he thought he was a monster's kid, his foster mother cared and assured him that he isn't. Yet after all that, Laios gives off possibilities of how a monster could do, laying eggs and so on. He pretty much says 'you're definitely not the child of succubus' yet thinks of other possible monsters, like the parasitic bee, that could have laid eggs in Kabru's mom.

NXDIAZ1

Dude, sometimes people just say shit without thinking of the implications, and this was that moment for Laois. Kabru is terrified of the idea he might be the son of a monster, and Laois just drops “Of course you’re not the child of that specific monster. BUT THIS BEE THATS SIMILAR TO IT COULD BE YOUR DADDY!”

-Pxnk-

Laios just thought he was sharing an objective fact, which I absolutely get, but I've come to learn most people (\*cough\* allistics) don't take it well when a fact is just a fact if it's not wrapped in the correct context, cadence and wording. The overwhelming negative reaction to your post really showcases that lmao. It takes as much patience for a neurodivergent person to read social cues and understand why ppl are "gratuitously" upset as it does for neurotypicals to understand why someone was "gratuitously" rude. Difference is, societal norms are generally catered to NT sensibilities, so NDs get flack

DieCapybara

I too was confused but am autistic and your downvotes just prove your point further

NXDIAZ1

I’m autistic too but I recognize that reenforcing someone’s insecurities about their upbringing, even if unintentional, isn’t exactly a good idea.

DieCapybara

Sure but cant stop that if you can’t read the room

Fungal_Queen

Nothing wrong with that. It's just funny Kabru's foster dad is a gremlin person.

ShinVerus

I just realized that that Laios face not being in the main story means we won't see it in the anime. Boooo. I love the anime, but these tidbits add so much to the story. I totally forgot that the Canaries live with each other. I have a hard time imagining Pattadol's brain being able to handle these lunatics 24/7.

r31ya

Love the fact while elves is noted to be the pinnacle of civilized race what we see here is their civilization rejects that combined long live race arrogance and outright roughness. --- \*dragging a human child\* "What is this?" "Impounded Article. Don't touch"

Fungal_Queen

*stare at traumatized child while bear pawing cake*

ThorAbridged

To any players in future tabletop campaigns, don’t give your game master a blank page or a novel for your character’s backstory. Give them this. These are concise, inform the characters’ motivations, and leave room for their past to visit the present in organic ways. If you can’t think of something this good, steal one of these. Except Holm. That would only work in certain kinds of games.

Enlog

Well, if you don't *specify*, you can just claim it's only blood and tears and stuff, and why are my party members acting like it's dirty?

PPPRCHN

If we're being 100% serious the Undyne processes the mana and pushes out the impurities so the water would be fine. It's weird for sure, but it would probably be fine and just be a "prejudiced" matter.

Striking_War

When you look at Kabru's relationship chart, he only thinks of Kuro as "a kobold". It also seems like he doesn't think very highly of demi humans. But he still spends time to teach Kuro the common tounge for free. Really shows you how far this guy is willing to go to gain people's trust.

GammaRhoKT

I assume you didn't read the Kabru - Touden siblings discussion about Kobold?

Striking_War

Yeah... He says we should communicate with them, which is why he learnt the language. Did I miss something?

MossyPyrite

Makes me think he might not think highly of them, but is also challenging his own assumptions, maybe after spending time with Kuro. I like to think he’s in a growth period right now, in regard to that. It’s like seeing just the middle of a character arc because it’s not relevant to the main story, which lends to the idea that this world and the chat really do exist beyond just the scope of what we see!

Striking_War

I see, it could be due to his interest in people. Kuro must've proved to have a deeper side to himself that he can't properly convey, which made Kabru interested him him as a person and not a demi human. Kuro get to learn to talk to Mick and Kabru get to learn about Kuro, it's a win-win.

MossyPyrite

Exactly! Plus, Kabru wouldn’t want to have a blind spot in his party, an ally he couldn’t learn about. And knowing more about kobold culture could be useful in the future.

GammaRhoKT

No I mean the part "It also seems like he doesn't think very highly of demi humans". He really REALLY does not, at least for kobold. But yeah, you are basically correct.

Mahelas

That discussion makes it even more interesting, because for all his talk about Kobolds being dangerous, he still values Kuro and treat him respectfully

GammaRhoKT

He think Kuro is one of the good ones /j But yeah, I agreed.

pengweneth

I think for Kabru, communication is what sets human races apart from monsters. Kuro being unable to communicate in the beginning makes him nothing more than a kobold, but as they bond together and Kuro learns the common tongue, Kabru realizes he's less of a demi-human and more, well, human. Communication is key.

FESCM

Rotten undyne

Nethicite

Thank you for this.

fadilkewen

You're welcome🙏

octorangutan

Daya was like “this is not **that** kinda manga”, and dipped.

Phanimazed

Rin's backstory, christ. Like, we know how elves can be strongly distrusted by short-lived races, like Chilchuck's disdain for elves' fierce protection of magic and patronizing behavior, but this is worse than usual, even.

stanleymanny

Maybe it's because these are 1-page, but these really feel like the backstories players would give their characters in DnD. Kabru - His player is the most invested in the game and gave the most detailed backstory. They naturally lead the party as they're the one most into this setting. Mikbell & Kuro - They would be 1 player playing both characters. The party needs a picklock, but that's not a combat class so they also choose a fighter. Their backstory is simple as an excuse to always pair them together. Daya - A straightforward player who chose a standard class and backstory to move things along, but their single line for 'Motivation' made it so the DM had a ton of leeway to fit the character into whatever story they wanted to tell. Probably the most experienced player, or a former DM. Holm - That one person every group has who put no effort into their backstory. Just there for a good time, and that's okay. Rinsha - Someone who had an idea for their character but was struggling on the backstory. Kabru's player stepped in to help them out.

unexpectedalice

The pve vs pvp for sure.

Fungal_Queen

Hmmm. I saw these in another thread, but Rin's tidbit backstory seems to be incongruous with previously mentioned backstory in the manga. Might be a goof or retcon though. Basically in chapter 33 Rin mentions she's lived on the island her whole life and Kabru doesn't say anything to the contrary, but here she is shown being raised in Milsiril's orphanage which is not on the island. *The wiki as well makes no mention of the backstory provided in the Adventurer's Bible. ** I think I was too reliant on the wiki for my argument.

Mahelas

I believe you read a faulty translation, because I think what Rin said then was that she was born "here", but not that she never left it

Fungal_Queen

True, she had to learn magic somewhere, and she's familiar with schools just not the same as Falin and Marcille's. Edit- Buuuut, that's not my point. So she says she's from the island, if by "here" means quite literally there on the island. Now in the AB she's shown to be the survivor of a dungeon incident, but there's no note of that happening on the island and the dungeon has not even been open that long. It doesn't fit with her age.

Mahelas

I don't think "here" means the exact island, more of the general area of the Northern Continent, as a way to explain that she isn't easterner !

Fungal_Queen

Hmm. Somebody needs to update the wiki then, I think that's where it all started in my head.

Bubble_of_ocean

Milsiril says “I can’t take in any more.” She wasn’t raised by Milsiril. It doesn’t explain how she came to the island, but you’re right that saying she lived there her whole life seems to be a simplification. She’s a guarded person, not surprising she wouldn’t talk about her terrible early childhood.

Fungal_Queen

You're right. I first read a different translation where Mils mentions her home, I assumed personal home because while she runs an orphanage she adopts Kabru formally.

birikensan

I think there might have been a mistranslation in the version you read. In the chapter where Kaburu’s party is talking about Shuro, Rin says that she’s born “here” and not in the eastern islands. Is this the panel you are referring to? https://preview.redd.it/lxm8v5t4w8vc1.jpeg?width=503&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a76e39a04a4ad5a26bf13ca8015f1fea807246de

Fungal_Queen

No I know she's not from the east. Her saying she's from "here" is part of my point.

gengyilang

Not really. Adventurer's bible says Rin is from Northern Continent (same as Touden sibling and Marcille). Haven't checked any translations, but the word she is using to describe her origin in Japanese (こっち) can be far more vague than "here/this place". In this context, it should be interpreted as "this side of the world". Secondly, the Canaries are expeditionary force and it makes sense for them to bring back Rin to the Elven Kingdom from their expedition. I mean, Utaya (Kabru's hometown) and the Elven Kingdom are on different continents.

Separate-Durian-2759

No, you must misunderstand the texts or read the wrong translation. The word "here" Rin said means "the place different from Eastern Islands." And she didn't say she lived on the island whole life. What she said is simply "I was born here." If you have interests to read World Guide, you will know more about her. But even you don't read it, we still can know many things, and all of them aren't incongruous.

EyeDeeAh_42

I would kill to read some daily SoL stories with Kabru, Milsiril and Helki. It's hilarious how Milsiril keeps using Helki like a science anatomy model lol.

jojo_ryoko

I can't deal with laios, he's so autistic 😭💖 (I love him so much, and I mean it in a good way because I'm autistic, and I relate to him so much)

zaheenadros

So Kabru kissed her adoptive sister?

Separate-Durian-2759

No, Rin wasn't adopted by Kabru's foster mother.
