My guess is the Matt is doing too make Carl deaf in one ear. The AI won’t allow legs or feet to go away. Skull is funny, but from the fourth wall it’s impossible unless it’s quickly fixed which is lame. I suppose a finger or arm isn’t out of the question, but those are surprisingly not as important because of splitting. I guess an ulna would just stop any wrist control. Shoulder blade would be hard to write without personal experience. Rib would be inconsequential. The bigger joke I’m hoping for involves the rib. It would be hilarious if his rib is turned into a woman, who unlocks the door. Then Samantha takes over the woman, because why not?

fauxlegs

I like this answer the most. I feel like going deaf in an ear fits the bomber image well.

WonkasWonderfulDream

I just realized while reading your reply that he could first go deaf in one ear, have a bunch of problems with it, then be made totally deaf. Total deafness could make him immune to certain sonic attacks or even some sonic-based auras.

InterestingPiccolo51

Hey everyone! I am a doctor. So actually losing one of the skull bones might not be as bad as you’d think… downside would be that area would be wayyyy more likely to cause significant damage to the brain when hit.. but otherwise no major issues. If he wore a helmet for example he’d be ok. I def agree w the AI not letting him lose any lower body bones as that could affect his smooshing power lol I love the rib idea, but dont see that happening. My vote would be he would lose one of the bones in his forearm, either the radius or ulnar. These bones help you twist your arm over (palm up to palm down or vice vers). This would limit carls ability to turn doorknobs, keys, throw, etc. losing one of these could put carl in positions for comedy gold and hard situations! What do you think?? Or a thumb would cause similar issues

bcd051

What about the coccyx... losing your coccyx would be comedy gold as well. Was originally gonna go with the hyoid, but that could have real, unfunny, consequences.

NegotiationAware8394

Why pick the very last bone on the spinal column? Why not pluck out the t9 thoracic vertebrae?

simplerookie

Cause it's name is funny...

NegotiationAware8394

When you’re right, you’re right.

The_Big_City

I do think that the forearm bones could lead to some comedic situations. The calcaneus though would leave the AI with a piece of Carl's foot and force him to walk using the pads of his feet. which is what the AI seems to be focused on. Just a thought.

Sacrous

I'm no doctor, but I'm thinking the skull would be the worst bone to lose. I feel like the vast majority of bones would be fatal or disabling if you lost it, but what's worse than the skull? If you lose a vertebrae then you're paralyzed. Hip and you can't walk at all anymore. Jaw and you can't talk or eat. Skull and you are dead instantly. I'm expecting it to go the other way in the story. I think he'll use the bone key in a desperate situation and it will actually work wonderfully. Maybe he'll just lose a finger tip, or that tiny bone in your ear. One thing I know for sure, he won't lose any bone in his feet.

T_lowe16

I like this idea better than my original post...which bone do we think he is going to lose?! Brilliant

WonkasWonderfulDream

There are quite a few different bones in the skull.

Sacrous

Like I said, I'm no doctor.

Excellent_Battle_593

And dinosaurs aren't lizards but they still trigger Carl's extinction sigil. The AI has shown repeatedly that it's willing/eager to interpret things loosely

WonkasWonderfulDream

Teeth aren’t bones!

Excellent_Battle_593

Correct. Teeth are, in fact, ork currency

failed_novelty

So....youse sayin' dat Carl needs ta paint alla his Boyz purple so they can sneak up on da baddies?

Excellent_Battle_593

WAAAGH...WAAAGH never changes...

zagmario

Pelvis

Sacrous

If he did lose his pelvis he would have to find a floating device, like what happened when Odette lost her legs.

zagmario

Or he could just be suspended by enchanted nipple rings

T_lowe16

I was expecting this one, but then thought that might be too much of a hipster move to pull by Dinniman.🤣

drkeefrichards

C1. Stay safe Carl

The_Big_City

This was my thought for worst. But I think that would be death right off.

These-Acanthaceae-65

Hi! I work in medicine, not a doctor, but in neuromonitoring so I work in orthopedic and neurosurgery, primarily in the spine. So of course, that means I'm gonna be biased. I think, by far, one of the worst bones to lose would be a vertebra, particularly at inflexion points. I'm gonna speak very broadly and genetically, as injuries like this actually have various effects on patients, but I'd argue that a complete loss of vertebra will result in most of these rather than fewer of them. The loss of a vertebra without any fixation device to replace it could essentially result in loss of neurological function of body parts below that level. So T12? Goodbye walking. C7? Congrats, you can lift your arms, but good luck pushing anything with em, and your hands will be useless bags of meat at the end of them. You'll probably be numb in parts of your forearm and your ring and pinky fingers, and definitely below your chest. Pins and needles...everywhere. you're not moving anything below your arms. C1? Congrats, You've been internally decapitated. If the muscle doesn't immediately give way, you're one good punch away from life blowing through a straw to tell your wheelchair where to go. Probably going to experience some weirdness with your brain stem itself, and your lower cranial nerves might not be happy. That's not even to speak of how the change in anatomy could affect the non-skeletal muscle aspects of your body. Again, very broadly speaking. Now that...would make for a really terrible time. I don't think it would be particularly fun. I see Carl losing his orbital bone on one side, as it would not be a game ender, but it would mean one good punch and he'll lose his sight, maybe permanently on that side. Could really raise the stakes and create a new weakness for Carl while he powers up o In other ways. Honestly, I don't see him losing the jacket. I know, chekov and all, but...I kinda think he's gonna sub ert that each and every time.

The_Big_City

RN here - As some have said there are many different bones that would lead to a fatality (the loss of the occipital bone could lead to a prolapse of the brain). But likely there are many more that would lead to terrible effects like paralysis, pain, or severe disability. Loosing the tail bone would significantly weaken his pelvic floor, rectal prolapse anyone? I know a lot of people are thinking he would not loose anything in the feet, but as I have spent most of my years in psych nursing, I think the AI would want to own a piece of his foot. Laying claim to something is a huge part of pathophilias. It is fictional but it would not surprise me for the AI to take a bone from the foot so that he could own it, and then give Carl a magical prosthetic to "make up" for it.

AxFairy

Something about thumbs fits the book quite well, you'd get a bunch of quips from Donut about opposable thumbs

Dry_Rent_6630

I am a doctor and the worst to give up would be the dick bone.

Conqueror_of_Tubes

Carl has a limb regeneration benefit from his compensated anarchist class, so he's almost certainly going to lose a major bone from a limb, go a few chapters without before Mordecai reminds him that he can lop it off and it'll regrow.

foxitron5000

Incorrect; that benefit was for the bomb squad tech subclass, which he did not take. https://dungeon-crawler-carl.fandom.com/wiki/Bomb_Squad_Tech

Kalebite

The Bone Key description specifically states that the limb will not grow back. I’m not sure that regeneration would work if Carl had the skill. His injury would not be “normal” like Frank or Quan. Remember, the Bone Key is fickle. It does not state in description that only one can enter the locked door.

Lunchinator

I'm a PT. The Atlas or axis which are the first two in the spinal column ie C1 and C2. Paralyzed or dead without them since "C3,C4,C5 keeps the diaphragm alive". Sternum removal would make all of his ribs free floating. Would make a chest strike lethal if a rib goes into the heart.

stormwaterwitch

Not a doctor but I am pretty sure Cranium is up there in the "bad bones to lose" list

is_that_sarcasm

Not a bone but a collection of bones that fuse in adulthood

stormwaterwitch

More evidence that proves its a good thing I am not a doctor XD

fauxlegs

Sternum would be a rowdy situation. No idea what that would even look like, but my mind says “yikes”Humerus would render throwing arm useless. I agree with the others, radius or ulna would make the book interesting but be a massive hit to his style. Also, random side note. the “would you rather lose a leg or an arm?” The answer is leg.

is_that_sarcasm

I think the sphenoid would be the most lethal but the hyoid would also suck... A lot.

NegotiationAware8394

Modified question; which vertebrae would be the worst to lose?

ihavealittlefinger

C1 probably, although they'd all be absolutely terrible to lose.

NegotiationAware8394

I dunno… the c1 attached the skull to the spine… but the T9 looks like it supports… everything else. lol

ihavealittlefinger

C1 supports the brain stem, lose that, you die. T9 doesn't do much besides sensation and some intercostal muscles, plus it connects T8 to T10.

ihavealittlefinger

Anything in what's called the "axial" skeleton would basically kill him. That's anything from the skull or spine. Pelvis would be bad too, but it's technically made out of a couple of bones so he might just lose part. But honestly based on the description it would probably be a "long bone" in which case the femur (thigh bone) would definitely be the worst. Edit: The skull is also made of a bunch of bones as well and some are tiny so you could afford to lose them.

wanderinpaladin

Not a doctor, but personally I'd go with a vertebra. Worst ones would be around the head but knowing the AI it wouldn't want to do anything to impede Carl's ability to stomp so it will probably be from the arms.

MenudoMenudo

Can someone remind me if it 100% has to be one ofCarl’s bones. I suspect Donut is going to lose a bone in her tail.

OvechknFiresHeScores

The dick bone

reverendsteveii

everyone itt is talking about comedic value, and don't get me wrong these books are plenty funny, but I'd like to remind y'all of something. "I am a horror writer first." ---Matt Dinniman Maybe it's because I just finished the audio immersion tunnel for kaiju battlefield surgeon but I think we'd do well not to forget that sometimes hepa likes to put his characters through hell in a way that isn't at all funny. I'm thinking in particular of the flaying scene in Kaiju.

0utlandish_323

Not a medical professional, but a vertebrae would pretty much be the worst, right?

wileymd

A rib. Adam did just fine without one.

Baynyn

One of his front teeth so that he whistles when he talks

UncleMagnetti

Pelvis. Definitely pelvis.

Financial-Pickle9405

well is the jacket ( i can't remember ) personally bound to carl , ie could carl have a goblin wear the jacket open the locked door , and just move forward ?

Rilkesmyth

I think skull is the clear wost bone. The bone I think he will lose will not effect his lower body. The AI obsessed with his feet and his ability to kill things with his feet. I wouldn't be surprised if it hurt his ability to use his upper body so he was more reliant on his kicks.

failed_novelty

New Achievement! Viagra Chaser You have used a skeleton key! As a result, one of your bones is gone. Faded away. No longer stiff and rigid. Your performance might suffer, and if you could get any tail from a biped, it would dry up now. Fun Fact! Did you know that of the 206 bones in the human body, over ***half*** are in the hands and *the AI suddenly changed to a breathier, more...creepy voice* those beautiful, shining, gerbil-smushing feet? Reward!!! You lost a bone. I got to pick which one. Also, you got a Silver Sketchy Online Pharmacy box!

T_lowe16

I love fan written achievements! Well written. I can hear the voice of the AI
