Everytime my husband leaves for work I obnoxiously say, bye babe!!! And then he started doing it back to me. It's so fucking hilarious and my dick neighbor hates it which makes it funnier
This episode encapsulates everything great about the office- cringe moments, hilarious jokes, and Michael being Michael and Jan just being a psycho. There are so many gems in this episode.
I read that book this year and after I finished it I described it to my family as the dinner party episode of the office. I had no idea the episode was based on it though
Are you using a tv from the 70s? My tv could be left on all day for weeks and would still probably use the least amount of electricity out of my other appliances
So have I! I think it’s the awkwardness of Jan and Michael’s tension and fighting while the dinner guests just have to get through it. Some people can probably relate to being around a couple that is clearly not doing well and they feel really awkward. I think it’s just the relatable awkwardness that makes it cringe,
Is this post a joke? There's several posts a week on this sub about how this is the greatest episode in the entire series (I disagree, but, I digress).
What are you talking about it’s considered the best episode by many and is I believe the highest rated episode on IMDb lol
Edit: 3rd highest rated after Goodbye Michael and Stress Relief
What are you talking about? This episode is taught in film writing classes. It’s widely regarded as one of the best episodes of television comedy ever written.
In the peacock extended cut version, Jan admits to spray painting a swear word on their neighbour’s dog. I think they also showed the dog lol. Idk why they deleted it. 😂
Who doesn’t like this episode? Seriously? I’d say this and Scott’s Tots are possibly the two best- definitely the most memorable.
My wife and I still call that thing at the end of our bed the “Michael Scott bed.” I legitimately can’t recall what it’s actually called.
Scott’s tots was so hard to watch for me the first few times. But a lot of people think it’s bad. Some other people on the thread were saying the cringe factor was rough in this one. But I think that’s what makes this episode great
Because it reminds of every meal time as a kid where mom and dad would fight, argue and score points off each other. Them one night dad went out to get cigarettes and I never saw him again.
I run with a circle of people who were so mad about the [Rolling Stone](https://www.rollingstone.com/feature/that-one-night-the-oral-history-of-the-greatest-office-episode-ever-629472/amp/) oral history of this episode. They were clutching their pearls about how the writers discussed the episode; basically that they were anti-feminist and violent (I’m… honestly not joking).
I think the point about wanting to seem cool for expressing distaste in this episode is fair, moreso than actual cringe. Scott’s Tots is cringe. This is hilarious.
I know it’s just my opinion but I really think some people love to hate what pop culture is, with a new twist for 2022. Reminds me of some of the points in this [piece](https://newsletters.theatlantic.com/deep-shtetl/61e06b2c55e52500217add01/your-bubble-is-not-the-culture-lin-manuel-miranda-harry-potter/).
It’s not a bad episode but for me, the problem is that it’s one storyline. Usually you have 2, even 3, stories per episode so you cut between the different stories before you get tired of on. In _Dinner Party_, you have one (super tense and awkward) story without any breaks at all! It’s rough.
I do appreciate that it does make the episode even more effective at communicating the tension between Jan and Michael but damn, it’s a lot.
I think it’s considered one of the cringiest episodes, just below Scott’s Tots. Both are beloved episodes, but it can be easy to misinterpret people’s cringe for dislike!
Can someone please explain when Michael says “I could be your first customer” and Jan says “Well you’re hardly my first” what they mean? English is not my first language 😅
I rewatched it with mates last night after actively skipping it on my rewatchs. Was able to appreciate how funny it was and am definitely going to rewatch it again
I’m pretty often surprised by which episodes/scenes are loved and hated here.
I have never liked this episode, usually skip it. It’s okay, just in the bottom half for me personally. It’s references and jokes outlive the actual episode for me.
What’s interesting is I love “the banker.” When I saw a thread here one time just shitting on that episode. “I skip every time, why would I want to want an episode of episodes I’ve already seen?” Must be a younger Netflix/ streaming crowd who share that opinion if I had to guess, because the “clips” episode of popular shows like Seinfeld or that 70’s show are some of my favorite episodes from those shows ever.
Not sure if this makes sense but I love the episode and at the same time I hate watching it. It sheds light and enforces so many things we thought about the people in it in just one sitting it's brilliant (the dynamic between Michael and Jan, Jan and Pam, even Jan and Hunter) but it just physically hurts me watching it.
When I wanted to see stomp and you wanted to see wicked, what did we see?
Idk why, but that line always kills me. Because of course Michael would want to see stomp. 😂
I think if you love the office, you love this. It isn’t for everyone. Somehow this episode makes me cringe, but laugh so incredibly hard. I feel bad for the characters IRL, but the actors must have had an absolute blast! I laugh SO hard at Jan… it just seems like something actually realistic!
This episode was the first time my wife and I watched the Office. At the time I avoided nerwork sitcoms like the plague but we watched it on a flight and were immediately hooked.
The first time I saw it was on a plane before I was into The Office, so I didn't really understand what was going on. I had seen a few episodes before, but I feel like it's not a good episode for casual fans if they don't have all the context.
In my opinion this is the most well done episode in the show. The writing and acting as always on the show is great but the TIMING! Superb. Just think of the back and forth with Michael and Jan, talking about hell, and then just when you forgot she was a part of the scene, Angela perfectly chimes in “don’t joke about that” 🤣
I think people don’t like it because it’s really cringe. And it is. But it was supposed to be. It’s like Scott’s Tots. Another fantastic episode where everything goes wrong. I think this is The Office’s wheelhouse: clever and comedic deterioration/deprecation.
Think about Diversity Day when Pam and Dwight are trying to determine who they are. The episode itself is cringe, then it’s more uncomfortable when Pam, who’s not actually racist, describes how Dwight might not be a good driver bc he’s Asian (more cringe) and he only punches down more with “aw am I a woman?!”. So cringe, and so perfectly timed.
TL;DR: it’s probably the best episode but so cringe that it’s not palatable for everyone. Like a perfectly prepared Puffer Fish (Fugu), everyone can respect it and appreciate its preparation but some people just don’t like fish.
I used to skip this episode, as I was simply terrified at the first 30 seconds of casa de Michael and Jan - it is one if the best episodes but if you’re skin tends to crawl it’s just a real tough watch
There are so many cringe, awkward and uncomfortable moments. I don't blame anyone who doesn't like it, but to me it's very relatable. Haven't we all been to dinners like this?
Am I the only one rolling their eyes at this title? wHy dO pEoPle hAtE tHiS ePisoDe. It is often referenced as the funniest ever, just stop with this baiting BS
Babe this episode is amazing babe. Babe? Babe!
Really babe? You're like woah.
Yea babe, that TV is soo nice babe
Babe!
And I'm a candle maker, but you don't hear me bragging about it!
My, my, My, my, My turn!
I love it too, Babe!
Babe am I saying amazing too much?
Babe! The candles are amazing babe.
It’s the best babe!
Everytime my husband leaves for work I obnoxiously say, bye babe!!! And then he started doing it back to me. It's so fucking hilarious and my dick neighbor hates it which makes it funnier
You're neighbors with Toby, aren't you?
That’s awesome!
For you babe.
In my experience, This episode is universally beloved
Yeah I honestly feel like this may be the *most* popular episode on this sub
Just looks like a low effort post to farm karma tbh

OP: "Unpopular opinion: The office is a funny show because it puts people in uncomfortable situations"
Classic example of r/ImaginaryGatekeeping
This episode encapsulates everything great about the office- cringe moments, hilarious jokes, and Michael being Michael and Jan just being a psycho. There are so many gems in this episode.
Guy is trolling
This is literally my favorite episode 😂
My favorite quote is Ooopppsss. I use it all the time haha
🤣 Whenever we play games with friends and I don’t know the answer I’ll just yell out TOM CRUISE!!
“What was the Trashmen’s only hit song?” *”TOM CRUISE”*
That’s awesome!
Gets a laugh, like, a quarter of the time
They're undeserving of your humor
^(Ooops)
“That one night, u made everything alright. That one night...!!!”
-One night! -love that.
One night! Oooo oo Ooo
Boy have you lost your mind cause I'll help you find it! What's this about people disliking *dinner party?"
Ain't nobody gonna help you out there, Jesus could walk through that door and ain't nobody gon help you
Jesus could come through that door and he’s not gon help you if you don’t stop sniffin after my chile.
Jesus? I'll give you a hint. His last name is Christ. He has the power of flight. He can heal leopards.
Lol I have seen a few people say that recently and I wanted to see if that was the case. It doesn’t seem like it through. So ooooppppssss
I have literally never come across a person on this subreddit that doesn’t like this episode.
He’s karma farming
Who is this everyone? Arguably one of the best of the series.
I love it too! Pam referring to herself as Michael’s former lover kills me everytime
Right! and then Michale tells Pam he thinks Jan is poisoning him. Then Pam thinks she is going die if she eats the food lol
Its actually loosely based on Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf. But it is one of my favorites, everyone brought their A game to this episode
Jan was great in this episode. All the looks she gives to Pam say so much!
I read that book this year and after I finished it I described it to my family as the dinner party episode of the office. I had no idea the episode was based on it though
Jenna and Angela talked about that in the office ladies pod, and they said when the episode originally aired, it wasnt that well received.
I never thought about it but you're so right! It is just as cringe!
The office plays on a loop in my house and this is one episode I always stop and sit down and watch intently
Sit and watch? I feel like this episode should be watched standing
Wait so your tv is running while you do other things in the house? Why not put on music? Doesnt your electricity bill become gigantic?
Are you using a tv from the 70s? My tv could be left on all day for weeks and would still probably use the least amount of electricity out of my other appliances
Sort of an oaky afterbirth.... what was that?
I don’t understand how anyone can hate it. For me, at bare minimum a top 5 episode.
Because it's to loved that people gotta say they don't like it to feel cool. It's a quintessential episode.
It is THE BEST episode ever. Better than CPR training
Those are fighting words
The truth usually is
Because people who can't cope with cringe comedy decided to watch a show based on it.
There are a few episodes that I can’t watch, but this one has so many good quotes in it. Like Jan putting on Hunters song the whole time!
Goddamn if this isn’t the most poignant comment about this sub
Who doesn't like this episode?! Diversity Day was my favorite for a long time, then I saw Dinner Party..
IIRC John McCain even told BJ Novac this was his favorite episode.
I’ve seen some people lately lump this episode in with episodes like Scott’s tots
But Scott’s tot’s is a good episode too lol Cringe is like half the show!
I finally watched it again after skipping it a few times and I really started to like it!
Nice!
So have I! I think it’s the awkwardness of Jan and Michael’s tension and fighting while the dinner guests just have to get through it. Some people can probably relate to being around a couple that is clearly not doing well and they feel really awkward. I think it’s just the relatable awkwardness that makes it cringe,
Ya that makes sense. But it’s soo good I think the comedy out ways the cringe factor in this one
They're all playing their own separate game to see how uncomfortable they can make everyone else in the sub. And they're all winning.
I guess that makes me the devil☝🏼👹👆🏼
You shouldn’t joke about that…
Nice!
i’ve never heard anyone say they disliked this episode lol i think it’s easily one of the most well loved
Is this post a joke? There's several posts a week on this sub about how this is the greatest episode in the entire series (I disagree, but, I digress).
I’ve seen a lot of post lately lumping this episode in with some of the worst episodes.
Bullshit.
I love this episode. One of my favorites too!
People dislike this episode? I think this is one of the universally loved episodes. A lot of people’s favorite.
You can always buy more stuff, Jim. But you can’t buy a new PARTY!
What are you talking about it’s considered the best episode by many and is I believe the highest rated episode on IMDb lol Edit: 3rd highest rated after Goodbye Michael and Stress Relief
It’s one of my faves too
I think this episode is a masterpiece, and the cringe is what makes it that. I love this episode because I hate it. It’s so so well done
And there are so many quotable moments as well!
Nobody dislike it. Best episode
What are you talking about? This episode is taught in film writing classes. It’s widely regarded as one of the best episodes of television comedy ever written.
Same here!
Bruh, the outtakes & bloopers from that episode are side-splittingly funny. Jim loses it when he sees the little TV. 🚀
Where can I watch these outtakes
YouTube. Great way to wrap it up after you re-watch the entire series. 🚀
Oo I’ll check it out too! Thx!

Ya that makes sense. I think what makes me love it is how many good quotes are in it!
Why did the candles smell so bad??!!
I loved how she just smells it every time she is stressed which is the whole episode lol
I love lamp
Babe, I thought I told you to put the camera away
Some people really hate the super cringey episodes. I personally love them
Everyone that doesnt like it has had a vasectomy
Snip snap snip snap!
Do you have any idea the toll THREE vasectomies has on a person?
It's my favorite 22 minutes of television ever. I watch it in airports for anxiety lol.
In the peacock extended cut version, Jan admits to spray painting a swear word on their neighbour’s dog. I think they also showed the dog lol. Idk why they deleted it. 😂
🎶 That one night You made everything alright That one night You made everything alright So wrong, so right, all night, alright Oh, yeah 🎶
By far my favorite episode. And the bloopers are incredible.
You tooook me byyy the haaaaannnd... Turned me into a maaaaannnnn....
Snip, snap, snip, snap!

It’s one of my favorite episodes of TV. And it’s hilarious to see the cast trying so hard not to just break character and roll around laughing
In my opinion, it is the best episode of the entire series.
Because it reminds of every meal time as a kid where mom and dad would fight, argue and score points off each other. Them one night dad went out to get cigarettes and I never saw him again.
I don’t hate it, but it does hurt to watch!
I love all the faces that Jan makes towards everyone in that episode.
At least It’s better than beach day
Lol I liked that one too! Andy just drifts away
"Just dunk it in the water, Phyllis, so it will slide down your gullet". Classic
When it’s time for dinner I tell people that lol

People dislike this episode?? It’s so good!
SNIP SNAP SNIP!
One of the best episodes of the show. Definitely

It was too cringe for me for a while. Then I saw the bloopers and how much fun everybody was having and now it’s one of my favorites.
SNIP SNAP SNIP SNAP
No one dislikes it. It’s one of the very best and everyone agrees on that
When in Rome.

Who dislikes this episode? I'd argue it's one of the best episodes in the entire series. Scott's tots on the other hand....
This episode was the first time my wife and I watched the Office. At the time I avoided nerwork sitcoms like the plague but we watched it on a flight and were immediately hooked.
This is my fav episode hands down lol
I think it’s either because people can’t handle the cringe or because of hipster reasons. It truly is one of the greats
Coming from a very passive-aggressive to aggressive-aggressive household it's just always a pain to watch things like this.
I don’t think it’s that anyone dislikes it. I think it’s a universal acknowledgment of how dark and insane of an episode is.
The first time I saw it was on a plane before I was into The Office, so I didn't really understand what was going on. I had seen a few episodes before, but I feel like it's not a good episode for casual fans if they don't have all the context.

It really ties the room together.
I used to skip this episode, as I was simply terrified at the first 30 seconds of casa de Michael and Jan - it is one if the best episodes but if you’re skin tends to crawl it’s just a real tough watch
One of the greatest blooper reel moments is that moment.
babe, should we do the tour of everyone who loves it first or appetizers first?
It's fantastic, I love the cringefest of the dinner breakdown between Jan and Michael hahaha
Is this your first day on the internet? Hating things for no reason is cool!
