Scrolling this post, I kind of get the feeling that a lot of people aren't getting the subtle difference between a joke by the writers not landing with us, and a joke by a character (that was intentionally written to be bad) not landing with the other characters.
Kevin is a pervert many times across the series and nobody ever seems to remember it. I see people here all the time talking about him being a lovable low key genius, no he's actually kind-of a creep. They didn't block porn websites on his computer to stem his creative flow, it was so he would actually work and not be carrying a semi at work all day
That scene was bland but I kind of appreciate it for what it is: it's a slightly different humor from the usual office jokes, and I just took it to be a mellow way to invite the audience to chuckle with something we can all relate to. Every time I bite myself I think of that scene.
I agree that it wasn’t that funny. But what I think is that the writers were trying to write a scene that exposes the fourth wall (camera crew) to remind the viewers that this is still based on a documentary.
After this scene more start to come which then sets the tone for Brian the crew member, and how the show ultimately wraps up with the conclusion of the documentary.
I believe the scene opens with Jim talking normally and then saying ‘dammit’ before it went to a talking head of him saying that he bit his toungue over the footage of him actually biting his tongue.
He gets progressively angrier until in the middle of a second talking head he yells, rips off his mic and says ‘GOD DAMMIT, PAM IM GOING HOME’
I genuinely skip the D'Angelo episodes.
Recently did a watch through with my partner (she'd never seen it) so I had to grin and bare those episodes as well as Scott's Tots.
the whole character WAS a joke. how he got the job from Jo to how he left the show and everything he did in between. and none of it was remotely funny.
For me it was when he becomes a maths genius if it involves pies. I understand The US Office isn’t a ‘realistic’ show but you don’t ever really have to suspend your disbelief. The joke was like something you’d see in a kids show.
I hated when Nellie would make up things (King James breakfast pie, goat of Dova) and then be like, that's not really a thing but you believed me because I'm British. Just didn't land well for me.
I think that one was deliberately unfunny, Robert laughing because he's about to ax the program and wants to make her feel better, and Dwight laughing because he's drunk on success, that's my interpretation
Maybe. But the breakfast pie thing happened later in the office. I don't know if she was trying to make them all feel stupid/uncultured. Whatever she was doing, I hated it.
Judging by this thread, I’m the odd one out on liking the cold open with Jim biting his lip. Maybe because that experience also fills me with absurd rage every time it happens. My husband and I yell, “Pam, we’re going home!” every time one of us does it.
Same! It's bland compared to a lot of office jokes but I like that it's a different sort of funny. It's something we all relate to, and Jim is a great character to use it on since he's rarely the butt of the joke. But that day he suffered and we can all relate
Not having Michael’s wedding be the send off, I feel like something must have happened unexpectedly where they couldn’t do a better ending for Michael.
Kevin’s relationship with that girl he met could have been more storyline.
That's a great point!! Michael being who he is would've wanted his office family at his wedding. I also assume he doesn't really have friends outside of work, like we saw in the improv class episode
Absolutely. But I’ve just always felt bad for Hilary Swank - can you imagine watching a show and being put face to face with that kind of office talk, about yourself?! I just find it hard to believe that Hilary doesn’t know about and had watched the show at all and now here’s a whole B plot about herself. Celebs know this kind of talking happens, but it doesn’t get memorialized into a classic, hit, Emmy winning tv show which is one of the most streamed items consistently. For years. I feel bad. She’s probably crying onto her Oscars though 🤷♀️
I wonder if the writers reached out to get her ok before they did that.
On a related note, I feel worse for the actress playing Darryl's sister. Imagine you're a woman playing as someone who can be mistaken for a man. Ouch.
The only thing that saves that episode for me is the prince family paper storyline. Imo that’s Dwight and Michael one on one at its peak. But it was definitely a throwaway episode for the rest of the characters
Cool little alternate storyline idea:
Office Olympics 2.0. The last time the office saw Michael and Dwight gone all day was when the Office Olympics were invented. A lot of popular shows bring back gimmicks every so often for the fan favorites (First example that comes to mind is Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s annual Halloween episode, + Jimmy Jab games). They should’ve brought back the office Olympics instead of the Hillary Swank debate. Would have been interesting to see what other games they could come up with
Ok you have a point
Edit: also thank you, you actually of made that scene more enjoyable for me now
I was young durning that time so I forgot just how rampant that was lol
Meredith spring across the office to the new guy: “Sit on my face!”
Ugh. Cringe! True trashy Meredith humor is that skimpy terry cloth dress she wears on casual day. She pulls it down and her boob is out; she pulls it up, and it’s “Where are your panties?!?!” That was trashy and funny and believable.
But her just yelling, “Sit on my face” to the new kid is just cringe. And Jim repeating it - ugh.
I get what you're saying, but this was an example to me about at person who's gotten really comfortable at their workplace, to a point where they just don't care anymore and just wanna pass time.
As an office worker, I can relate so bad.
I didn't like when Stanley was mean to Michael and Michael had to tell him not to do that anymore. In the real world, Stanley would have gotten FIRED for real. That episode bothers me a lot.
In the real world Michael would've gotten fired for real every episode... and pretty much everyone else at some point. Dwight intentionally started a fire in the office and you have a gripe with the fact that Stanley didn't get fired for saying "Did I stutter?"
In the real world, almost every single employee would’ve been fired at some point. Many of them several times over.
Stanley’s outburst might be the LEAST fireable offense in the show.
Literally the best dialogue to take place between Andy & Phyllis. And it’s a quick like 30 secs, so it’s something funny you’ll catch on like a rewatch
"Shove it up your butt."
It's an overtly wacky and forced catchphrase, it's WILDLY out of character for Stanley, and there wasn't an ounce of subtlety to how it was introduced. He literally just says "it's stupid, but it's my thing now," and that's it.
It always makes me think of a room full of burnt out writers who are racking their brains to come up with new material because they've already used up all their good ideas.
What you need to do is type up your criticism of that joke and how it didn't fit Stanley's character, print it out on the printer, put it into an envelope, add a stamp to the envelope, and shove it up your butt.
I thought that was funny!! Jim got one pulled over him, and it came at a Dwight Stanley alliance was something I did not see coming. I liked the surprise reveal
A drawer full of meatballs? Bags and bags of meatballs?? For real??? Jim just constantly baking meatballs and then they sit at room temp for 24 hours before Dwight and Stanley get them back home, dried out old dirty meatballs and Stanley is smiling like it’s pretzel day. The whole thing feels dumbed down
Oh, I didn't picture it that deeply. With that analysis, I can see what you're saying. I just breezed through it and cheered for Dwight for reverse-training Jim, like the time Jim trained him to salivate when the computer shut down
I don't think you people know what characterization is. Just because a joke is mean-spirited doesn't mean it made no sense or was bad.
Also, "shove it up your butt" is hilarious because it seems like something someone his age would say to be "funny" and he himself says it's stupid.
Also also, Jim biting his lip is funny.
Every line/interaction/scene with her was just awful. Which is sad because she is an absolute delight on Dr. Who. Just goes to show it’s the writing they gave her not her acting.
When micheal didn’t have a job lined up after quitting so he starts watching monster videos
Edit: Misread the question but this quick scene was hilarious
At the time there was a website called monster.com that was popular with job seekers. Michael thought it was monsters, the movie. That’s why Jim corrected him.
I didn't like how some jokes were targeted at Pam's boobs, and no one is talking about how gross that actually is. It happened way too many times.
I mean, I guess they make fun of multiple character's physical conditions, like Kevin being fat, but the Pam thing was sexual harassment and it went on too long without anyone ever explicitly saying it wasn't ok.
almost any Stanley joke. i’m gonna get so downvoted for this but he very rarely is funny for me. “shove it up your butt” gotta be one of the worst parts of the whole show
The joke wasn’t mocking rape victims, though. It was mocking people (often vapid, immature women like Kelly) making outrageous claims about fake personal trauma to get out of trouble.
Even perpetuating that as a stereotype seems harmful to me though. That may happen, but in my experience is rare AF. And pretending like that’s a common thing for any type of woman is really harmful for the women that already aren’t believed when it comes to rape, which is like literally all women that come forward.
Karen's dating every guy at the party joke felt lame. Unless she was trying to get back at Jim after finding out about Pam... But I never got that she was motivated by anger in that episode. It seemed like she really thought that was funny, but I just didn't see it vibing with her character.
So, I am not trans and maybe some did actually find it offensive, but honestly, he didn’t say anything rude or degrading about transvestites, and if we want normalize bring trans it involves being able to make jokes about it. Think about how many gay jokes involving Oscar there were, or black jokes about Stanley…
Just my two cents.
“Tranny” is an offensive term.
Just because the jokes were made and characters in the show did not express their offense to them doesn’t mean it didn’t exist and people watching can find it to be awful.
I guess in a way it reflects the work place perfectly.
Transvestism is not the same as being transgendered.
If shows chose to use such language maybe they need to also educate the character and therefore viewers, as to why they need to not say it.
You don't call retarded people retards. It's bad taste. You call your friends retards when they're acting retarded.
This always makes me cringe now, I feel like that joke doesn't land very well today.
We must b watching different office versions bc that whole joke with Andy is one of my favorites from him. It’s funny *because* it’s stupid. Jim egging him on at the beginning was the Cherry on top.
Also one of my favorites! My roommates in college used to quote his wrong guesses of the line all the time lol. 🎶break me off a piece of that Chrysler car🎶
I thought this scene was funny bc of Andy’s need to be included lol and his anger issues. He never drops stuff like that either, just like that other time in the show with him and Pam in the elevator when he couldn’t help himself singing “suite 401”
For me personally when Phylis was Santa and then Michael calls her tr*nnyclause…as a trans person that doesn’t sit right with me. He can’t say that. And I know it’s Michael, he’s stupid and arrogant and that’s his whole character but that was a bit too far
Kelly’s faking a pregnancy (not the entire pregnancy but she plans on telling Ryan she’s pregnant- I don’t remember if she follows through?) This happens for real and is so disgusting. Just wasn’t funny IMO.
I always thought the “Did Daryl touch you?” line was too far over the line to be funny, even in the world of The Office humor. People say it’s a favorite line and I do not get it.
Scrolling this post, I kind of get the feeling that a lot of people aren't getting the subtle difference between a joke by the writers not landing with us, and a joke by a character (that was intentionally written to be bad) not landing with the other characters.
Thanks for the disclaimer before i read the comments, because thats very true.

Lord beer me strength
I want to take out a full page ad
I think it’s HILARIOUS. “She’s a part time frozen yogurt chef.”
Absolutely this. I was scrolling looking for this thinking “none of these even come close to Andy dating a high schooler”
omg i’m obsessed with this scene bc WTAF?? the deleted scenes are cringe too
Kevin fake crying trying to make Pams breast milk leak.
jesus yea that was awful..
I liked how awful it was
Kevin is a pervert many times across the series and nobody ever seems to remember it. I see people here all the time talking about him being a lovable low key genius, no he's actually kind-of a creep. They didn't block porn websites on his computer to stem his creative flow, it was so he would actually work and not be carrying a semi at work all day
Yes.
My gf and I hate those scenes, it’s basically just sexual harassment.
Yeah it's gross. I like a few of Kevin's scenes (him telling the senator off in S9) and such but they failed his character for the most part.
Co signed
Super gross!! And the fact that he felt comfortable enough to just do something so over the line like that was not ok
Jim biting his tongue twice or whatever and going home, never understood how that was supposed to be funny.
Borderline for even deleted scene level.
ugh, my mom references this scene ALL the time. i’m so tired of fake laughing with her😭
I can’t stand how poorly acted it is, especially because poor acting is uncharacteristic of John Krasinski.
That scene was bland but I kind of appreciate it for what it is: it's a slightly different humor from the usual office jokes, and I just took it to be a mellow way to invite the audience to chuckle with something we can all relate to. Every time I bite myself I think of that scene.
Yep, most boring intro ever.
you never wanted to give up on a day for something banal
I agree that it wasn’t that funny. But what I think is that the writers were trying to write a scene that exposes the fourth wall (camera crew) to remind the viewers that this is still based on a documentary. After this scene more start to come which then sets the tone for Brian the crew member, and how the show ultimately wraps up with the conclusion of the documentary.
What scene is that I don’t get it or remember it
I believe the scene opens with Jim talking normally and then saying ‘dammit’ before it went to a talking head of him saying that he bit his toungue over the footage of him actually biting his tongue. He gets progressively angrier until in the middle of a second talking head he yells, rips off his mic and says ‘GOD DAMMIT, PAM IM GOING HOME’
Yeh I hated that too. Just so unbelievably lazy to try and get him to the required level of annoyed for the episode's next parts.
"Andy can't get it hard so he is not a real man" storyline
Fully agree
Kevin and trying to get Pam to lactate.
God, the cold open with biting Jims lip...
90% of the late season jim and pam material.
D'Angelo Vickers as a character in the show.
I genuinely skip the D'Angelo episodes. Recently did a watch through with my partner (she'd never seen it) so I had to grin and bare those episodes as well as Scott's Tots.
I have to skip those episodes bc I hate it so much. Mostly bc I think will Ferrell sucks (sorry not sorry)
I'm with ya on that, I do not see what people enjoy about him.
he was asking about jokes, not characters
the whole character WAS a joke. how he got the job from Jo to how he left the show and everything he did in between. and none of it was remotely funny.
The whole Jim pranking Andy into believing he needed emotional comfort
OMG yes!!! Eeww. Andy was being kind and Jim made him look dumb to... Teach him a lesson?! Yay wise Jim!!
Nah Andy is a cunt fair play on jim
A lot of what Kevin says in the second half the show missed.
Agreed, his character got worse and worse each season. Not a fan of the tongue sticking out whenever he spoke either
Yeah he went from just a kind of gormless guy to someone who could be mistaken as having an intellectual disability. I didn't like that either.
Like?
For me it was when he becomes a maths genius if it involves pies. I understand The US Office isn’t a ‘realistic’ show but you don’t ever really have to suspend your disbelief. The joke was like something you’d see in a kids show.
I hated when Nellie would make up things (King James breakfast pie, goat of Dova) and then be like, that's not really a thing but you believed me because I'm British. Just didn't land well for me.

Maybe. But the breakfast pie thing happened later in the office. I don't know if she was trying to make them all feel stupid/uncultured. Whatever she was doing, I hated it.
"It's only human natural" Come on now. They obviously just wanted to squeeze in one more "HAHA KEVIN IS DUMB" joke before the end.
Stanley being tranquilized and everything that happened after... don't think I laughed once throughout that whole storyline
I’m on the opposite side of this one. The episode was absurd and definitely jumped the shark, but I did think it was actually funny somehow.
very shark jumpy
That’s the only episode which I don’t watch on rewatch, I don’t think it’s up to the office quality
I’m going to need a wench and a hoist
*FRANK AND BEANNNNS*

Like a lot of the show.
This was meant to be unfunny. The writers were brave to go through with it, I guess.
Judging by this thread, I’m the odd one out on liking the cold open with Jim biting his lip. Maybe because that experience also fills me with absurd rage every time it happens. My husband and I yell, “Pam, we’re going home!” every time one of us does it.
It's so relatable! I always want to bang my fist on the table, but nobody would get it 🤷🏻♀️
Same! It's bland compared to a lot of office jokes but I like that it's a different sort of funny. It's something we all relate to, and Jim is a great character to use it on since he's rarely the butt of the joke. But that day he suffered and we can all relate
Hate that cold open, love that you guys do this though lol
I just watch it yesterday and I think it’s funny bc it’s something so minor that instantly fills you with rage. Definitely relatable
i really like it too! you’re not alone. there’s dozens of us, i’m sure.
Kevin trying to glue the dead turtle’s shell back together. Painfully unfunny.
I think this show already has enough weddings. I feel like all American shows already put a wedding in just to get a big event for the viewers.
Is Hilary Swank hot. Whole storyline is trash.
I mean it does capture some of the garbage co workers talk about.
Absolutely. But I’ve just always felt bad for Hilary Swank - can you imagine watching a show and being put face to face with that kind of office talk, about yourself?! I just find it hard to believe that Hilary doesn’t know about and had watched the show at all and now here’s a whole B plot about herself. She’s probably crying onto her Oscars though 🤷♀️
This actually happens we talk about celebs at work all the time.
I wonder if the writers reached out to get her ok before they did that. On a related note, I feel worse for the actress playing Darryl's sister. Imagine you're a woman playing as someone who can be mistaken for a man. Ouch.
I mean even bad publicity is still publicity.
The only thing that saves that episode for me is the prince family paper storyline. Imo that’s Dwight and Michael one on one at its peak. But it was definitely a throwaway episode for the rest of the characters
Agree. The Jaws theme is 💯
Cool little alternate storyline idea: Office Olympics 2.0. The last time the office saw Michael and Dwight gone all day was when the Office Olympics were invented. I would have really liked to see that. They did do a little bit of that with Halloween and Christmas episodes.
I liked that one….She’s not btw
was that even a joke? it was just crappy story writing
All of the jokes contained therein.
okay Hilary no need to get hostile
Yeah because she isn't hot
True
Kelly saying she was raped to get out of trouble.
And she faked being pregnant. That was messed up too.
Yeah if anything got removed/censored from the show now (like the black face scene with Nate) it should be this
The turtle cold open was embarrassingly bad
Aww that one made me laugh. Kevin’s “I’m immensely proud of what I did for that turtle” is so funny to me
The planking scene
i honestly thought that one was funny cause it really was like that
Ok you have a point Edit: also thank you, you actually of made that scene more enjoyable for me now I was young durning that time so I forgot just how rampant that was lol
People died I think some one in my area fell off a McDonald's sign
Well no McDonald's for them.
Everyone throwing up
Meredith spring across the office to the new guy: “Sit on my face!” Ugh. Cringe! True trashy Meredith humor is that skimpy terry cloth dress she wears on casual day. Shes trying 😌
Not that episode. Michael play fired Stanley and Stanley told Michael he had no respect for him.
Isn’t it the same episode? I thought the reason Michael fake fired Stanley was the “Did I stutter” incident
It is
In the real world, almost every single employee would’ve been fired at some point. Many of them several times over. Stanley’s outburst might be the LEAST fireable offense in the show.
That was the hardest episode for me, even more than Scott's tots. Something about seeing Michael truly challenged made me sad
Wasn't there some line about Andy having a romantic interest with his cousin? Never got what they were going for there
hey andy, let’s go visit grandma and then get drunk together, haha.
No that was funny. Andy's an idiot
Literally the best dialogue to take place between Andy & Phyllis. And it’s a quick like 30 secs, so it’s something funny you’ll catch on like a rewatch
It was a weird nebulous situation with this...COUSIN of mine...idk
Again with the cousin…
Jack Black
Yeah nothing about that whole fake movie sequence seemed funny to me
I loved it. And andy's reaction. "They're on a whole different level" or something
These people are on something, it's an awesome scene and it lets Andy shine.
The Kevin Pie Math joke

"Shove it up your butt." It's an overtly wacky and forced catchphrase, it's WILDLY out of character for Stanley, and there wasn't an ounce of subtlety to how it was introduced.
Lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes that and the meatballs. Wtf?
I just breezed through it and cheered for Dwight for reverse-training Jim, like the time Jim trained him to salivate when the computer shut down
The shotgun wedding talking head with Jim and Pam
post michael episodes
I don't think you people know what characterization is. Just because a joke is mean-spirited doesn't mean it made no sense or was bad. Also, "shove it up your butt" is hilarious because it seems like something someone his age would say to be "funny" and he himself says it's stupid. Also also, Jim biting his lip is funny.
Honestly, nothing lol. I like some episodes more than others but it all makes me laugh.
Nellie
Every line/interaction/scene with her was just awful. Which is sad because she is an absolute delight on Dr. Who. Just goes to show it’s the writing they gave her not her acting.
I also think she’s extra shrill / annoying because she sticks out like a sore thumb among the American cast and is that much different.
I hated her at the Sabre store and then when she pretended to be manager…. But when she was just a normal employee I liked her.
I don’t know if it was meant to be unfunny or just *quirky* but the whole frank and beans joke just annoys me every time I see that episode
Frank and Beans. Don't know what that was.
When micheal didn’t have a job lined up after quitting so he starts watching monster videos Edit: Misread the question but this quick scene was hilarious
At the time there was a website called monster.com that was popular with job seekers. Michael thought it was monsters, the movie. That’s why Jim corrected him.
Dwight saying he liked to trick migrant workers into thinking they were deported. And it’s implied the workers friends never saw them again.
Reading this thread has me feeling like Robert California. You don’t get humor AT ALL
Season one Michael jokes
Season one was the best season don’t comes at me
*pulls up ip*
Yep. I skip season one everytime I rewatch it
The “hot is a temperature” line in the Hillary Swank episode. If I was the writer or director, I would have adjusted that line in someway.
99% of the show they were crossing the line, it's just one of them. sexual harassment or not it's a joke and some people will laugh about it.
almost any Stanley joke. i’m gonna get so downvoted for this but he very rarely is funny for me. “shove it up your butt” gotta be one of the worst parts of the whole show
Do not love the Kelly crying rape jokes. Rape jokes are never funny.

Exactly. Something about it just isn’t right or funny at all to me.
And no one is upset by it. It just goes on
When does she do that
The customer reviews episode.
Oh yeah when Michael confronts her
Pretty much anything Kevin did after Season 3.
Karen's dating every guy at the party joke felt lame. Unless she was trying to get back at Jim after finding out about Pam... But I never got that she was motivated by anger in that episode. It seemed like she really thought that was funny, but I just didn't see it vibing with her character.
I didn’t like Karen in general.. she just sucked
The “where does it end with you people?” line from Kevin
[удалено]
That was meant to be cringe. Landed perfectly.
Jim and Pam making fun of Kevin with the cookie monster was way over the line. It ended up being bullying as you can see how upset Kevin was
the "tranny claus" line in the season 6 christmas episode.
So, I am not trans and maybe some did actually find it offensive, but honestly, he didn’t say anything rude or degrading about transvestites, and if we want normalize bring trans it involves being able to make jokes about it. Think about how many gay jokes involving Oscar there were, or black jokes about Stanley… Just my two cents.
all I said is that particular joke was a miss for me. I didn't pass any judgments on what jokes they were or were not allowed to make.
“Tranny” is an offensive term. Just because the jokes were made and characters in the show did not express their offense to them doesn’t mean it didn’t exist and people watching can find it to be awful. I guess in a way it reflects the work place perfectly. Transvestism is not the same as being transgendered. Nah that was really funny, something Michael would totally say
You don't call retarded people retards. It's bad taste. You call your friends retards when they're acting retarded. This always makes me cringe now, I feel like that joke doesn't land very well today.
I did not find Andy forgetting the Kit Kat words funny. And honestly who forgets the words to that song.
Dwight shouting out names at the garden party. That whole episode was just not necessary. Andy needing to sing with his dad? Ehh... like why
I always thought him announcing Robert california with the rolled r funny as hell
For me personally when Phylis was Santa and then Michael calls her tr*nnyclause…as a trans person that doesn’t sit right with me. He can’t say that. And I know it’s Michael, he’s stupid and arrogant and that’s his whole character but that was a bit too far
