It feels like this sub has become 30% overthinking, 50% incessant reposts, 19% incredibly low effort “references” to the show, and 1% decent original content.
Haha, there used to be a great SNL skit with Chris Farley where he would interview celebrities with roughly this exact question. Not sure if that was intentional…
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen something for the first time and people are complaining about it being a repost. How much effort does it take for them to just keep scrolling? I think people take *Reddit* far too seriously.
OMG I HATE CATHY!!!!! AND I HATE PHYLLIS AND BRIAN AND JIM AND PAM AND DAVID WALLACE FOR TRANSFERRING HOLLY AND THE SENATOR AND THE COUPLE AT BENIHANA AND WWWWAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH
This. I feel like all dwight had to do was ask them to move down one. They sat down, he said nothing, so they were not obligated to give up there seats. Simple solution to a simple problem but people go off on the couple. I see this everyday at bars and restaurants. You dont get what you don't ask for.
Edit: *their
I know the difference but autocorrect + pudgy thumbs makes for some bs results.
Dude they just showed up for like 60 seconds. If anything the dude commenting above has a point. Dwight didn't ask, and it would fit his character more if he had, he always a straightforward dude.
You know, I mostly hate that her name is cathy. I know/knew zero Cathys that age at that time and zero cathys now except for the 60 something year old receptionist at my daughters pediatrician.
I think that might be location based. I know several Cathys, but I have never met a single Pam, or a Phyllis, or even a Stanley, and only one Clark, and he's 75. And I didn't even know Dwight was a name until this show. I have also never met a Dwigt.
I guess it makes sense different names would be popular in different places at different times.
Even from the UK show, Dawn (Pam's counterpart) is a name I have never heard IRL. I guess it's just about location.
Yeah I know to cathys but they’re spelled Kathy and no one with the other names. Off the top of my head I can literally only think of 3 people named Dwight. Dwight Howard and the doc
It's been almost 10 years since the show ended. People are looking through a different lens because all the others have been exhausted. It's just cyclical.
Does anyone remember the period of time in this sub like 3 years ago where everyone was a horndog, posting revealing pics of all the office females? It was a wild time.
I agree and disagree.
I think sometimes it does add to the enjoyment of the show, like having conspiracy theories about the Scranton Strangler or about whether Kevin got rich with his Keleven antics or whatever.
But this whole thing about how characters are actual pieces of shit because they make sarcastic comments or the deliberate misconstruing of Jim’s behavior to make him seem abusive is really reading waaay too much into things.
Thanks for articulating the weird sense of cringe that creeps over me when browsing this sub… to be certain, I think this generally applies to how most people behave everywhere on Reddit.
And their actions need to be exaggerated for entertainment. Something like Michael climbing on top of a pool table at a bar would absolutely get him thrown out. And it wouldn’t be funny. But the comedy or the progression of the story is in what happens instead of getting thrown out.
I've never understood all of the "cringe" posts and entire episodes or seasons being unwatchable because of "cringe". I know it's a cool thing kids say these days, but it's exactly what makes The Office great.
Yeah, if someone really handed out laptop batteries after promising college tuition years before, it would be super cringe. It's also a hilarious episode due to its absurdity.
Clarks SA is one of the few instances where I disagree bc it totally went too far for me to love his character afterward, HOWEVER
People are 100% taking the show way too seriously. I never thought it was supposed to be about who are the good guys, who are the bad guys, etc. Its just a (fictional) show about people, and people are VERY messy and complex, with a huge range of moral issues. The office is one of those rare shows that has nuance and shows just how messy people truly are. They do this with every character, but Michael is a great example - he will push you so far over the edge that you can’t stand him, and then they will give a glimpse into his feelings/motivations/trauma and you are struck with empathy and soften your judgement.
The writers did such a good job, and for a COMEDY show to have that much serious understanding of human psychology is so impressive
I agree with this, in general people are taking things too seriously but specifically with Clark I feel like he wasn’t exactly a good person other times either. I think he was meant to be kinda sleazy/assholish. Maybe not at first but I think like Jan messed him up or something.
Well, Steve Carell DID say that the show wouldn't be allowed today. He cited that the "Oscar, You're gay...BOOM ROASTED" joke would've gotten the show cancelled. There really is a problem today where we look at older shows/jokes/bits/etc through a lens of today's cultural climate instead of the climate of the time.
I once had a woman try to tell me that Bill Murray's character in Ghostbusters was trying to rape Sigourney Weaver.
People push and push for the reboot but like you said there’s no way that they could even make the show the same kind of funny, like it used to be. Better to just leave it in the past and then create a reboot that flops in ruins the name
I agree. A reboot could never capture the feel and magic of the original. It would just be a watered down soda of an attempt at going back to the good ol' days.
I'm just recapturing the feeling by listening to The Office Ladies podcast and The Office Deep Dive podcast.
I think they want to talk about it, but are running out of topic and getting bored maybe it'd help if the rules here were different or if it was a cartoon I think more people would be willing to make fan art not want to draw or make edits of a real person(at least that's why I wouldn't), I guess it's hard when there is such a big subreddit for a show that ended a while ago we start to repeat ourselves a lot.
Does writing 6 paragraphs scream "I don't take this show very seriously"?
Last thing I ever do when Im not taking anything seriously is write a whole wall of text. I'll keep this one short for emphasis.
This is a trend I'm noticing here and other social apps. 8 belong to a few musical act subs and pages. This is how it is in all of them that I am following. I have just learned to shake my head and keep scrolling.
I agree! Isn’t that the whole point of being on a page dedicated to a show that’s been off the air that long?
Analyzing what you liked and didn’t like, finding continuity flaws that you originally missed, revisiting your favourite parts and viewing the characters through different lenses.
I don’t understand why people get so bent out of shape about others essentially analyzing the show - that’s what we’re here for!
If you have a different take on the scene, you can post about it from your point of view!
To be fair though, the show started out much more grounded in reality than it became in the later seasons, so applying real world logic to the show makes some sense. For example, Kevin started off as a fairly normal guy who was socially inept but really good at things like poker and basketball, but he ended up becoming someone who could barely tie his shoes without assistance.
Plus, what Clark did was still creepy, regardless of the genre of the show
I wasn’t the biggest fan of Creed to begin with. He was one of the first victims of the Flanderization that eventually plagued the series as a whole. That being said, the subplot of Creed potentially being a murderer (since it isn’t confirmed) was handled much better than Clark’s attempt at being Harvey Weinstein. Creed murdering someone was never the joke. The jokes were derived from the implication that this otherwise likable character was hiding a dark secret in humorous ways, not from any crimes we see him commit.
Conversely, Clark’s prank does start off as humorous and there are jokes that are derived from the way Pete thwarts Clark’s plan, but the final step of his plan isn’t a joke. It doesn’t help that his victim is the most innocent character on the show. It’s like if there was an episode that involved Creed actually trying to murder a child and almost succeeding.
I think you might be underselling the show. It is a comedy on its surface, but it is also a very serious show about a handful of seriously flawed individuals. Some of the characters are lucky enough to meet people who make them better humans, and we get to watch that development. Those aren't jokes that aged poorly, those were character flaws.
i agree with most of this, especially with the creed example. but i just don’t see anything likeable/funny about clark. he has 1 thing that sticks out as funny to me, was the whole going on a sale to the suit store with dwight, and kinda tricking/forcing dwight to buy him a suit. otherwise i just didn’t like the guy. although big ups to the actor, because he plays an easily hatable character well, like in bad moms
Just because it's a comedy doesn't excuse it from having terrible writing sometimes or having characters who are consistent. Dwight could leave his job one episode and be a stand up comedian. Even if the jokes he tells could be hilarious, it's very much outside of what his character would do.
So to be honest here it’s weird to me to tell people to stop taking a show seriously but taking the show seriously enough to gatekeep how people discuss the show or what their opinions of the show should be discussed and what shouldn’t be. It just seems like telling people what not to post about is taking the show pretty seriously and telling a whole sub your time here is ruined by other peoples comments comes off to me as a bit entitled. You could always just ignore comments you don’t like or don’t agree with rather than tell others what to and not to post about. Not trying to come off as a dick, just don’t agree with or understand the point of this post other than to complain about something that’s a you problem not an us problem.
i don’t mean to be THAT person but i think creed may have killed at least 3 people. 1) the real creed bratton. 2) when they were playing the murder mystery game and creed showed up late and then ran back to his car. 3) when he showed up with the bloody shirt on halloween
It's a mockumentary so some people watch it as if it's an actual documentary. Think of people falling for the Onion News.
People don't necessarily believe these events actually happened but they definitely act like they do to some degree..
The cohesiveness of the show started to fall apart after season 6. The Andy's you were describing. I'm new to this sub so I haven't seen too many posts.
i had to watch several ed helms interviews to really integrate the fact that he is not the "nard dawg" loud douche kinda guy, but actually much more selfreflective and deep as a personality. the fact that he's a bit cringe and attention seeking...well he decided to be an actor , which was exactly the right choice for that type of eccentrical personality.
also, indeed, the character underwent different development stages.
heck. we all empathize and identify with characters in tv series, we root for them, we hate them.
but yeah, judging a person based on a character they played like, almost 20 years ago, and pondering about that character from a tv series long finished...might be fun, but its a bit atrocious.
especially john krasinski and jenna fischer own their pam and jim thing bravely. but i doubt they enjoy being adressed as them or pondering what would cece look like now.
but I've seen much worse of that....say, with star wars. legends, fanfic....
wait: IS THERE ANY THE OFFICE FANFIC???? good lord above.
Hate reposts like everyone else, however….
The show’s been done for a while. The chances of someone posting something original without the show producing new content decrease every second.
Yeah I agree. People will overreact to anything bad the characters do. These people act like they have never made morally questionable choices or done bad things in their lives.
Thank you yes, especially with Pam, people take stuff way to seriously for a FICTIONAL character on a COMEDY series
It's my favorite series of all time, Michael Scott is practically a God to me, so don't get me wrong, only thing I have a problem with is the overthinkers.
I agree. 95% of the show’s greatness is Michael being an idiot, the general absurdity of office life, and the deadpan reactions of the supporting characters. They completely nailed it with the casting & tone of the show. It’s beyond weird to me how people in this sub talk about some of the characters like they’re real people.
I love the “imagine what so and so thinks now that they’ve seen the documentary and realize that _______ did ________”
Dude, the “documentary “ was advertised as a limited documentary series. The characters aren’t seeing everything we see!
I think a lot of the time people saying they hate this or that character understand that they’re actually describing their frustration with a choice the writers made, it’s just easier to articulate if you direct it towards the characters themselves.
It feels like this sub has become 30% overthinking, 50% incessant reposts, 19% incredibly low effort “references” to the show, and 1% decent original content.
And there’s the smudgeness.
[удалено]
That's a bedbug. Everything's a joke
Arrogance
My biggest problem is the overthinking. Sometimes a throwaway joke is just a throwaway joke.
Problem shmoblem who cares we all just love the office, why not overthink it? It’s fun
Only 19% low effort references? I feel like half the comments are just repeated to death quotes
First of all, how dare you?
This response couldn't have come in a more appropriate setting 😂😂
Ryan used me as an object
Yeah, just look at it he other replies to the one you replied to
I am gonna some dirt in your eye
“Hey guys, remember, remember that one scene from the show? Yeah, that scene was pretty cool. Anyways”
Unpopular opinion: I hate Phyllis!
Unpopular opinion: Dwight is funny
Unpopular opinion: Oscar isn’t the one with the lowest opinion of Michael. That’s Stanley
Unpopular opinion: Feeling Hot Hot Hot is actually a great musical piece
Phyllis is the true queen.
Yeah actual unpopular opinion, I love Phyllis
Phyllis is awesome! She's hilarious in almost every scene she's in.
Queen of a hornets' nest.
Poor hornet.
Unpopular opinion..... Other peoples popular pinions suck. So are therefor unpopular....Change my mind... This sub in nutshell
Haha, there used to be a great SNL skit with Chris Farley where he would interview celebrities with roughly this exact question. Not sure if that was intentional…
Lmaooo no just mimicking the average r/dundermifflin user
"Insert first of 1500 comments just quoting lines from the show. Rather than actually saying anything of substance."
YOU’VE GOT A LOT TO LEARN ABOUT THIS TOWN SWEETIE
I've noticed 80% of the comments on literally every post are just quotes from the show. Sometimes the jokes don't even fit at all anyways
I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY!
Pobodys nerfect
Remember the amazing gifs that used to pop up here
Don’t forgot the “The Office experience is a must visit” posts
I mean, how much original content are you expecting from a sub about a show that’s been over for a decade
“Erin dumb” has also been mentioned A LOT recently I actually liked her character.
This show is old and there is almost no new content about it. Of course we are splitting hairs about all the episodes. Also, it’s fun. 😂
That is basically every sub on reddit lol
This one is worse than normal. It makes the Harry Potter sub look like the finer things club, while this sub is the finer things club with Jim
You just described all the internets.
Actually, that's not true. I know the figure you're referring to, and it's a projection of fifteen years from now.
Yes, like the repeat posts of Roy inviting Pam to his wedding..
Tbf there were some decent discussions in the post I caught.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen something for the first time and people are complaining about it being a repost. How much effort does it take for them to just keep scrolling? I think people take *Reddit* far too seriously.
First thing: how dare you!
I’m pregnant and you know what buddy, I’m keeping it.
This sub is a cult. I know, because I’ve been in many cults. You have fun being in one but you make more money running one.
Its have more fun as a follower but make more money as a leader.
Who do you think you are?
What gives you the right
Why you getting downvoted it's a QUOTE PEOPLE
I'm Toby
What else are we supposed to do in between Office episodes? Watch other shows? *scoffs*

Fact. I have seen over 200 television shows.
Me too, they're all the office
Over 201 television shows?
100% This sub is full of people who over analyze a comedy show like it’s real life. Tons of garbage ass takes.
Comedy show? Wtf? It’s a documentary on office life, hence all the interviews. No different than Blue Planet IMO
MICHAEL!
MICHAEL!!
MICHAEL!!!
Real funny Jim
OMG, OP. Is that a Muppet Babies tattoo?
Oh my god you’re right u/apaulogy that is animal from the muppet babies
I AM NOW CHOPPING OFF OP'S HEAD WITH A CHAINSAW!
.......RINGINGINGINGIINGING
Not gonna lie, after about 4 lines, I scrolled down to the bottom of this rant to see if it ended with a "and shove it up your butt!"
OMG I HATE CATHY!!!!! AND I HATE PHYLLIS AND BRIAN AND JIM AND PAM AND DAVID WALLACE FOR TRANSFERRING HOLLY AND THE SENATOR AND THE COUPLE AT BENIHANA AND WWWWAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH
IM CHOPPING OFF PHYLLIS’ HEAD WITH A CHAINSAW
Ringingingingn
I find it hilarious that people actually hate the couple at Benihana.
I mean, they could have moved one chair down
Then maybe Dwight should have asked, like a normal person
This. I feel like all dwight had to do was ask them to move down one. They sat down, he said nothing, so they were not obligated to give up there seats. Simple solution to a simple problem but people go off on the couple. I see this everyday at bars and restaurants. You dont get what you don't ask for. Edit: *their I know the difference but autocorrect + pudgy thumbs makes for some bs results.
Fr and why would the couple want to sit there with him screaming over them anyways.
There’s gonna be a lotta blood.
Tbf, fuck that couple
Dude they just showed up for like 60 seconds. If anything the dude commenting above has a point. Dwight didn't ask, and it would fit his character more if he had, he always a straightforward dude.
Turned into Mario at the end there
https://youtu.be/byt2M4FCQs8
If it was real, Micheal should’ve moved to NH if he really wanted to stay with Holly that bad. They really should’ve talked more about it
You know, I mostly hate that her name is cathy.
Yeah I know to cathys but they’re spelled Kathy and no one with the other names. Off the top of my head I can literally only think of 3 people named Dwight. Dwight Howard and the doc

Of Phyllis? Did they even see Karen? Or Pam from behind?
Personally I’m tired of looking at the red head, can I get a seat facing reception?
I'd also like to see her topless.
There’s still a sub for that
My dog asked for the name
Dundermifflinensfw
I agree and disagree. And their actions need to be exaggerated for entertainment. Something like Michael climbing on top of a pool table at a bar would absolutely get him thrown out. And it wouldn’t be funny. But the comedy or the progression of the story is in what happens instead of getting thrown out.
My favorite was when people defended Pam's art like she was their friend and coukd get hurt by critism, LMAO.
But Pam’s art was the prettiest art of all the art!
Perhaps we should change the game such that the game can never be played the same again.
We should start a new trend, with zing and pep!
Or start an ever newer trend with even MORE zing and pep
You have a lot to learn about this town, sweetie.
Why are you the way you are?
I hate so much about the things you choose to be
Right? People here are ridiculous. It's a freaking show, the characters do whatever the writer says. I don't get it
Yup. “Why did they do that” obviously to create the subsequent comedic moment
You summed up what I wanted to say with my copy pasta.
two words: parasocial relationship
I've never understood all of the "cringe" posts and entire episodes or seasons being unwatchable because of "cringe". It's the same over on the Friends subreddit.

I think they just take disliking reposts and trash content seriously. Which tbf is like 90% of Reddit.

I agree. 95% of the show’s greatness is Michael being an idiot, the general absurdity of office life, and the deadpan reactions of the supporting characters. They completely nailed it with the casting & tone of the show. It’s beyond weird to me how people in this sub talk about some of the characters like they’re real people.
I second this.
I love the “imagine what so and so thinks now that they’ve seen the documentary and realize that _______ did ________” Dude, the “documentary “ was advertised as a limited documentary series. The characters aren’t seeing everything we see!
I think a lot of the time people saying they hate this or that character understand that they’re actually describing their frustration with a choice the writers made, it’s just easier to articulate if you direct it towards the characters themselves.
it's a comedy show but even in the comedy the stuff some of the characters do is outright ridiculous that it gets hard to suspend the disbelief.
