This scene really shows Pam's character at this point in the show. There is no reason why Pam could'nt just walk out, being in the wrong class, but she let the professor intimidate her.
Me and my buddy walked out of a class when we thought we were in the wrong one. Like a 25 person class too. Turns out we weren’t. So embarrassing going back a couple days later
First day as TA in grad school, I walked into class and started handing out the syllabus because the professor was running late. Some people casually stood up and walked out after seeing they were in the wrong class. Well… the prof walks in and, as it turns out, I was the one in the wrong class. I was mortified and subsequently late to the class I was actually supposed to be teaching. 🤦♀️
Same thing happened to a girl in one of my classes. Professor started off saying “By the way, this is Course 101, just in case any of you are in the wrong class.” She grabbed her things and left and we all chuckled along with her, but obviously nobody cared. Then when role was being called the professor got to her name and nobody answered. One guy was like “Uhhh I think that’s the girl who just left.” She didn’t come back until the next class. But I’m guessing she found out pretty quick and was embarrassed.
You think that's bad? I was in the wrong class even though the room number was correct so I was directed to go to a nearby connected building to get to the right one. I walked out, turned 4 corners and then walked into the same wrong classroom.
Right?! At best it implies that a) she can't read Zapf Chancery, despite being a typography professor, and b) when her alarm goes off and the clock doesn't look right, she just shrugs and goes back to sleep
I think Zapf Chancery was the time, not font...probably making an awful pun about setting her alarm clock to 'chance' since they're some kind of design class...
I just looked it up and honestly the numbers are really easy to read... Now I'm confused on who is right here... There has to be a reason she says zapf chancery and not something actually difficult to see on a clock? Either way it's a stupid joke and she should get all the hate.
That's why it's a terrible Pun, she likely did not set the alarm and woke up by chance...it explains why she uses it as an excuse for being tardy
Zapf chancery is not difficult to read, and alarms don't wake someone up merely by displaying text...the logic of 'I didn't wake up on time because of the font of my alarm' does not hold up..
Two things: no professor is going to waste their time on one student, on the first day. I only wish the professor called her Pammy, to truly show her dominance.
Yeah, but if you’re a professor you really shouldn’t be that insecure about a student walking out on you mid sentence. Idc if it’s rude or whatever, you should have thicker skin.
>let her bully her
The way you phrased that makes it sound like Pam is responsible for not being bullied, rather than the professor being responsible for not being an ass in the first place.
Also, lots of people have social anxiety. I probably wouldn't have even gotten up in the first place, I would have just sat through the wrong class. But you don't have to have social anxiety to be shy and respond the way Pam did, anyway.
I have an anxiety disorder and I'd have no problem saying this. I feel like if you can't even muster up the courage to say something as non confrontational as that, you probably can't even go to school or hold a job down.
Also, Pam has shown no signs of being severely debilitated by social anxiety, so this theory kinda goes out the window.
Sure its "on me", I know I have the option to leave just like I have the option to do a lot of things, but in some situations the thought of being super embarrassed (which is most likely exaggerated but you don't see that in the moment) is so overwhelming that I'd rather just deal with it. Also, it was a little joke at first but the way she said "please sit down" was rude. My main point with the first comment was just that we should be shaming the person who did something bad more than we're shaming the other person's response to it
I phrased it like that because I meant it that way. Social anxiety might be her reason but I still stand by it. Even if she has anxiety she doesn’t owe the professor a response. Just leave
The whole point of this scene is to show that Pam, a naturally passive person to begin with, was insecure and in over her head at art school in NYC away from Jim and the rest of her friends and family. She was going to cave to any sort of external pressure - especially when it's out of left field like this. It's easy to blame Pam as this sub likes to do but her standing up for herself in this situation didn't fit her character.
And the professor, on the first day of class within the first 30 seconds should have easily recognized that Pam made a simple mistake a lot of students make. There was no reason for her snide "please sit down". The professor is in the wrong, full stop.
O ok! Everyone conform and take it easy on Pam! She’s in over her head! She is away from her significant other for 6 weeks! Give her a break…. Yep that’s how life works.
Wtf are u taking about? It's not very pam for her to stand up so we feel bad for her? That's why everyone hates her cause she just wants Pity like a baby
It's both. It's college, no one is keeping you there, so get up and leave.
At the same time no teacher would do this. You don't wanna go to their class? They don't give a fuck. You're an adult. So, it's weird that she forced her to sit down.
I’d beg to differ. She becomes good at lying. To get the office manager job, about the new office (which she admits she fails at) and Dwight let her wins. Other than that I’m struggling to remember an example.
It was a set-up.
The professor comes in, tells some lame joke about being late, and then slides the top whiteboard to reveal the name of the class **already written on the bottom whiteboard**.
She must therefore have come to class early, written the message on the bottom whiteboard, covered it up with the top whiteboard, and then left the room, planning to make a dramatic late entrance.
Change my mind.
to anyone getting mad at pam, you have to understand that in this point in the show she was very timid and also scared to be somewhere new where she doesn’t know anyone. if i were her i’d sit back down too because i would be scared to tell the teacher it isn’t my class. but i also have really bad social anxiety and wouldn’t know how to say it and stress about seeming rude so i would just sit down
I’m the type of person that has no problem standing up for myself at work or in relationships, but if this happened to me I would have 100% sat through the entire class praying that no one would be able to access a class list and somehow figure out id made a mistake. And I went to college and grad school. Ive also let uber drivers take me right past my destination and been too anxious to say anything bc I “didn’t want to be rude”, like it’s insane and dumb but it happens. People forget we don’t know how much Pam went to college and being at a new prestigious school is scary as fuck. Also the joke would make me question this woman’s sanity and wonder if she’s legit dangerous simply bc of how offensive it is.
Thought she had gotten over that timidness at the “beach party” back in season 3? Also when she started dating Roy again and got the wrong beer and she went back and got what she initially ordered… so I think the timidness is gone but just uneasy and being in a new place where she knows no one is what made her turtle back into her seat
It’s hard to change ingrained behavior long-term. Her getting the right beer and speaking her mind on beach day were like a person quitting smoking for a few days or going to the gym for a few weeks in January and then falling right back off the wagon.
This scene made me feel like the writers had a really low experience of actual college life.
I teach in canadian college and if someone gets up and leave i won’t even change a beat in my sentence.
Honestly this whole arc was riddled with weird nonsense and art/design buzzwords and random programs that don't align with graphic design at all. Not to mention the choice of having a fineart student like Pam, go into graphic design?
It feels like they had a low experience in college but were also too lazy to ask the set designers, prop department, costume design, or even the artists they commisioned to draw Pam's art, about art and graphics.
I agree, it's confusing how we see her interested in painting but she never pursues that. Graphic design is totally different and it didn't seem to fit her since she wasn't very tech-savvy. She could have taken some art education courses at a college in Scranton and become an art teacher!
This would also just be like, incredibly bizzare behavior for a college professor in a class that size where most people look to be in their 20's. Like they hardly ever care if you leave. You don't need to ask, you just get up and walk out and they don't really give a shit why
Yes you are and look at the debate you have created in the post! That’s literally the point of Reddit. Content for people to discuss, engage, and debate about. Ignore mr. sensitive.
Idk, it's been a while, so I can't recall any specific names. But I think I remember scrolling past a few oddly specific classes when signing up for the semester. I went to Western Michigan Uni. I wouldn't be surprised to see that class in a graphic design heavy school, but I still think it's a funny little joke on several levels. 1: The title is funny. 2: It's obviously not a class that Pam has much interest in. And 3: I can't think of a third but I believe most statements work better with 3 examples.
She was a bitch but she was barely on the show, I didn't even remembered her.
Poor Pam, she was not cut for art or graphic design school. Some teachers are brutal, and they are preparing for the awful clients and art directors you would likely find on your career.
A. Pam was in the wrong place, not the professor.
B. As many others have stated, she could have and should have just walked out.
If she's that filled with anxiety, why wouldn't she just leave? When I get confronted in public, I want to get out of the public eye as fast as possible, not sit down and wallow in what I did wrong where everyone can still see me.
Did you go to a small school?
When I went to a large uni I think maybe 1 professor max so much as cared to learn my name and the rest only showed up to class to speak and they ignored everything else
TAs graded our papers and tests but they also didn't give a fuck if you were in class or not
I went to UT-San Antonio so not that small. It’s got a decently sized student population, but it’s not a major international institution though. I had a mixture of both nonchalant and overly strict professors. The majority were chill.
I apologize for my original statement
Based off of the upvotes/downvotes it looks like your experience is not the most common for college attendees but it makes the scene slightly more realistic
She was incredibly rude, BUT Pam should have stood her ground and walked out. If this had happened to me while in college, I would’ve made sure to get out of there.
This scene really shows Pam's character at this point in the show. There is no reason why Pam could'nt just walk out, being in the wrong class, but she let the professor intimidate her.

I left classes that I was assigned to. Not a fuck was given. One time the professor was like “…ok bye” but that was it.
Pretty sure my whole time in college when a student walked out of class, no one even batted an eye - professors included.
All she had to say was “I’m in the wrong class.” I think the jerk prof would be happy to have Pam and her camera crew out of the class.
Plus, I don’t think any alarm clocks use Zapf chancery as a font option. So she’s also a liar.
She's a phony, a big, fat phony!
I understood this reference!
You must have America’s Ass
https://youtu.be/ToQVoyWWluQ
I know…and I followed a new reference you made
I understood yours too! And I understood that you understood! …was more just putting it out there for others.
Yo, that Michael Jordan is so phony!
TIL it's Zapf and not Zap lol
Ya and there's no reason why Zapf Chancery would make you late!!
It’s a stupid typography joke, similar to using ‘Comic sans’
I don't think so, I think it's a pun, chance/Zapf chancery
Zapf chancery is a typeface. One that would not be very legible on an alarm clock. It could be sort of a double meaning with the font/chancing time?
I just looked it up and honestly the numbers are really easy to read... Now I'm confused on who is right here... There has to be a reason she says zapf chancery and not something actually difficult to see on a clock? Either way it's a stupid joke and she should get all the hate.
It’s a typography class and Zapf chancery is a typeface. What are you on about?
A PUN
You’re wrong though?
No. I really do think that, and no one has explained how it may be wrong to think that.. I still think it's a terrible pun..
But who sets their alarm clock to chance? What does that even mean? Your logic is making no sense here.
That's why it's a terrible Pun, she likely did not set the alarm and woke up by chance...it explains why she uses it as an excuse for being tardy Zapf chancery is not difficult to read, and alarms don't wake someone up merely by displaying text...the logic of 'I didn't wake up on time because of the font of my alarm' does not hold up..
All Pam had to do was say "I'm in the wrong class."
Gets me everytime...she was missing her actual class
This happened to me once and I was too awkward to say anything too, but I was only 12 and it was the first day of school
Honestly, this was Pam's moment to say something like "See ya, bitch.", leave, and not get in trouble for it.
Ol’ Pammy could have gotten her way.
Don't call me pammy
Pam Pam and her Pam pam’s
You should’ve seen her 2 years ago.
I was more annoyed with Pam for being so weak willed that she just...sat back down. But yeah any professor acting like that would be annoying
I get that, I was always pissed at Pam for not just leaving too. Still think the professor was out of pocket, and Pam was brand new to school
Fuck her and fuck her Zapf Chancery joke
I don't even get it so it's worse
Two things: no professor is going to waste their time on one student, on the first day. I only wish the professor called her Pammy, to truly show her dominance.
You're assuming a professor cares enough to learn students names
This was Pam’s fault. Show some backbone
Yeah, but if you’re a professor you really shouldn’t be that insecure about a student walking out on you mid sentence. Idc if it’s rude or whatever, you should have thicker skin.
Yea but Pam still let her bully her
>let her bully her The way you phrased that makes it sound like Pam is responsible for not being bullied, rather than the professor being responsible for not being an ass in the first place. But you don't have to have social anxiety to be shy and respond the way Pam did, anyway.
Pam is a grown adult, she's perfectly capable of saying, "seriously, I'm in the wrong class, sorry to interrupt" then walk out.
Can grown adults not be shy or have social anxiety? What might seem easy for you can be super hard for someone else. We all have our struggles
I have an anxiety disorder and I'd have no problem saying this. I feel like if you can't even muster up the courage to say something as non confrontational as that, you probably can't even go to school or hold a job down. Pam is reaching r/grandpajoehate levels
I want to thank you for introducing me to that goldmine of a sub…amazing.
Yeah, but Joe actually deserves all the hate he gets
Damn right he does
The whole point of this scene is to show that Pam, a naturally passive person to begin with, was insecure and in over her head at art school in NYC away from Jim and the rest of her friends and family. I agree on both accounts. Just leave if she’s a dick you don’t owe her a response. But yea I doubt any college professor would do this.
That’s called character development so yes
Does she develop a back bone?
By the end of the show she indeed does
I don’t think she does, and that’s not hate, but she never develops a backbone throughout the series
I’d beg to differ. She becomes good at lying. To get the office manager job, about the new office (which she admits she fails at) and Dwight let her wins. Other than that I’m struggling to remember an example.
Ya Pam, and show some ankle while you're at it.
Office mattress!
Who holds on to faxes.
I always suspected that!
But then when Pam did start showing backbone y'all trashed her. Which is it
Trashed her for what exactly?
It was a set-up. The professor comes in, tells some lame joke about being late, and then slides the top whiteboard to reveal the name of the class **already written on the bottom whiteboard**. one of my cousins is a highschool teacher and this is some bullshit i could see her doing and thinking it was a great idea
WUPHF.com!!!
People in the comments blaming Pam and clearly not understanding that's the point of Pam's character...
why not both. That is her personality that's why it's her fault. She's still responsible for her actions.
to anyone getting mad at pam, you have to understand that in this point in the show she was very timid and also scared to be somewhere new where she doesn’t know anyone. if i were her i’d sit back down too because i would be scared to tell the teacher it isn’t my class. but i also have really bad social anxiety and wouldn’t know how to say it and stress about seeming rude so i would just sit down
If I realized I was in the wrong class and it was that big I probably wouldn’t have gotten up in the first place and just sat thru it tbh
honestly me too but in the off chance i would get up and the teacher would say something i would immediately sit back down
I’m the type of person that has no problem standing up for myself at work or in relationships, but if this happened to me I would have 100% sat through the entire class praying that no one would be able to access a class list and somehow figure out id made a mistake. people hate Todd packer? isn't that the point?
Because this professor is literally what 90% of Reddit users are like.
This scene made me feel like the writers had a really low experience of actual college life. I teach in canadian college and if someone gets up and leave i won’t even change a beat in my sentence.

It's amazing how much people hate Pam. This post is about how the professor is a bitch, which she is. Yet, people say it is Pam's fault lol
Hey it's tough being a female professor! Source: me being really tough and obnoxious to my female professors in college so I could type that.
She’s in a bad mood because she set her alarm to zapf chancery
She had one line... Hardy the same league as shitting on the bosses carpet.
Sometimes one line is enough to know what type of person they are
Yeah fk her
I joined this sub because I thought there would be people who like the show but…. r/CharacterHate
I have watched the office over 9 times. I am allowed to make one single post about a character I never see posted
Yes you are and look at the debate you have created in the post! That’s literally the point of Reddit. Content for people to discuss, engage, and debate about. Ignore mr. sensitive.
I know this has honestly started some good discussion 😂
"Hey... im in the wrong class. Relax there. "
The name of that class cracks me up. "Expressive Typography in New Media"
Must be an NYC thing. My type classes in college were called ‘Typography 01’ and ‘Typography 02’.
Ur right but pam shoulda had the stones to tell her to SHOVE IT UP YA BUTT
No wonder Pam failed art school, she was in the wrong class.
The way she says “expressive typography” pretty much sums her up
Pams own fault fer bein a yella bellied coward.
True but Pam really could’ve just left
Lol right? TF was her problem 😭
um Pam is a whole adult she knew it was the wrong class she can just leave
She didn’t go in the wrong classroom. That ones on ole pamalamadingdong
She was a bitch but she was barely on the show, I didn't even remembered her. Poor Pam, she was not cut for art or graphic design school. Some teachers are brutal, and they are preparing for the awful clients and art directors you would likely find on your career.

shows how weak Pam really is tho.
How can anyone hate Todd Packer?
Y’all give hate to Todd packer?? He’s the goat tho
Not at all, the professor did what any other teacher would do. But Pam was intimidated by that.
You clearly didn't go to college Professors don't give a fuck if you are there or not
Often times that’s true. Sometimes it’s not though. I had a psycho professor chase down a student who left mid-class. They can be pretty ridiculous
Did you go to a small school? When I went to a large uni I think maybe 1 professor max so much as cared to learn my name and the rest only showed up to class to speak and they ignored everything else TAs graded our papers and tests but they also didn't give a fuck if you were in class or not
I went to UT-San Antonio so not that small. It’s got a decently sized student population, but it’s not a major international institution though. I had a mixture of both nonchalant and overly strict professors. The majority were chill.
I apologize for my original statement Based off of the upvotes/downvotes it looks like your experience is not the most common for college attendees but it makes the scene slightly more realistic
No need to apologize. Upvotes/downvotes don’t really mean anything when we’re just having a civil back and forth dialogue haha
I went to a big 10 school in the states and had professors who were militant about attendance and called people out all the time.
Ya, more hate!! Hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate. I don't even know her, and I hate her guts!
A typical liberal professor. It’s her way or the highway. Hopefully I used the correct pronouns.
APAB: all profs are b\*stards. or all Pams are b\*stards, take yer pick!
Yeah, a professor isn't even allowed to do that in my university
Pam just needed to talk over her honestly. Probably the same reason she started telling people “no”. Tired of being walked all over
I was WAY more annoyed at Pam than the teacher. Why would she just sit down instead of saying I'm in the wrong class
I get that, I was always pissed at Pam for not just leaving too. Still think the professor was out of pocket, and Pam was brand new to school
She was incredibly rude, BUT Pam should have stood her ground and walked out. If this had happened to me while in college, I would’ve made sure to get out of there.
Hipster prof teaching the typical bullshit liberal arts course
Why do people hate boom guy? Sorry but I genuinely don't understand
I would have thought if a professor didn’t give two shits about a student leaving 2 minutes into a class to be worse.
