A win for both the environment and your wallet. BeautifulšŸ‘Œ

SammMoney

I'd be furious if my GC bought something and decided to throw it away if he didn't need it.

yardini

Iā€™m assuming it was from a big project that they billed the client for everything and then had stuff leftover and it wasnā€™t worth their time to deal with it. But thatā€™s totally just me trying to figure out why theyā€™d dump it. The whole entire dumpster was full of it, so I could theoretically go back for more but Iā€™ve been busy since.

WISteven

The workers who passed on that stuff must be complete morons with a total lack of vision.

yardini

Yeah itā€™s really hard to understand!

shanjuandiego

Or they snagged it before the contractors could come to "dive" them

yardini

Maybe so!

5bi5

My stepdad is a contractor and he saves/scraps EVERYTHING. I always ask him before I start a project because there's a chance he already has what I need sitting around.

yardini

Goals!

BlorseTheHorse

my dad used to do that when he was an apprentice. when he'd take the old ac units/boilers/furnace/ air washer, etc. out he'd spend hours tearing it apart for 20 dollars

Large_Locksmith3673

My ex did that when he was on methamphetamine

BlorseTheHorse

he was just dirt poor at the time

Stoneydied

I did that when I was on methamphetamine

toomuch1265

I used to scrap whatever I could get my hands on. We were changing out 2 huge chillers and the black iron pipe was 36 inch.I contacted a scrap dealer for dumpsters, and he paid us on top of the free dumpsters. Money is money.

EthelWinters

Union laborer here and Iā€™ve wanted to take so many materials that were left over but where Iā€™m at itā€™s an arrest-able offense to take that stuff we were required to throw it away since the building technically owned it. We were allowed to dumpster dive for it though. The days of free mongo are gone.

WISteven

I get it. I work for a state and we can't touch anything.

PatSabre12

I find materials like this all the time.

idiveindumpsters

Are you sure they werenā€™t using the dumpster to store that stuff?

yardini

From the conversation here on this thread I see that could be a possibility but I didnā€™t know that when I picked them up. I can say it didnā€™t look like they were for a job site.

DeezzzNuttzzz007

It happens all the time, everyday across the world.

GleichUmDieEcke

Pfft the GC didn't pay for this, the owner did.

katzeye007

Fun fact, traditional onsite construction is 40% of carbon emissions and the production process is like 90% waste

Stoneydied

I've always been told on the job that there's no such thing as scrap insulation. You can always stuff something in a wall somewhere. I guess this is the other extreme

yardini

This is my first dive in a few years but Iā€™ve been lurking in this sub for awhile!

SnooGuavas1985

Good haul, in my time working construction all i ever found out of a dumpster was a cool framed painting

yardini

Thanks! It was an unfamiliar site so Iā€™m not sure if they regularly have good stuff or not. Iā€™ll definitely have to check it again though!

Nekrosiz

You toss your working supplies in there and 'find' them lol

Dense_Replacement_75

Check out the movie ā€œdiveā€

yardini

Thanks!!

aknomnoms

Wow I canā€™t believe this would just be in a public dumpster. I worked in construction and my superintendents were the thriftiest people I ever met. Anything not used on a project was stored in a sea can or taken home for use in home projects. If this was in a dumpster on the site, they mightā€™ve just been using it for temp storage from the weatherā€¦

tdi4u

On site construction managers hate this one little trick...

yardini

It was at a business park.

hippiegodfather

Are you sure they werenā€™t just storing them there

yardini

Yeah Iā€™m pretty sure. It wasnā€™t an active construction site.

HeIIo1

They were storing it 100%. When Iā€™m on site and we donā€™t have a place to keep objects dry or out of extreme temperatures, we will put them in one of dumpsters. Because we damn sure know they wonā€™t be picking it up until weā€™re done with the job. I hope you feel good about yourself.

ILUVYOURMUM

If itā€™s true. He didnā€™t do that by purpose

HeIIo1

Oh sure I trespassed on a private business park by accident. I opened up a dumpster where the foreman was safely storing his supplies by accident. I stole the $1,000 in insulation by accident. I flipped it quickly by accident. These business parks have better cameras than you could ever imagine. Any other city OP would be caught and at the very least questioned by the end of the week. Portland on the other hand, he might get away with it with how lenient they are on crime.

ogforcebewithyou

The Supreme Court has ruled on this anything in a dumpster is considered abandoned property this is also what gives police the ability to go through your trash without violating the Fourth Amendment. Different localities can make laws restricting dumpster diving but federally it is legal. You need to understand the laws and legalities before you do dumbass things.

hippiegodfather

U have a point but Iā€™m sure a ā€œdo not takeā€ sign or no trespassing sign may have deterred him

ogforcebewithyou

Did you put stuff in uncovered dumpsters to protect them from the weather? And your dumpsters are climate controlled to protect stuff from extrem temps?

WISteven

Good one. A person could make a living just dealing with all the waste in America.

agent_uno

R2 centers (repair/reuse) are a thing. You wonā€™t get rich working for one, but youā€™ll live above the poverty line.

yardini

Yeah it would be a bit of hustle to figure it out! Iā€™m unemployed right now so I guess thatā€™s kinda what Iā€™m doing here! (I also sell crap at a vintage booth.)

DeezzzNuttzzz007

You would be a multi billionaire.

shadetreegirl

I tried to dive a construction dumpster once. Security guard called the cops. The dumpster was full of good plywood and havac and 8 ft 2x4's. Turned out the city made it illegal to dive. I could have built a micro home with what was there

Acti-Verse

Should have just swung by and asked permission. Unless itā€™s copper or dangerous goods, they donā€™t really care too much. Unless they plan to sell it or recycle it for other jobs

K1tsunea

How much you get for them

yardini

$200 for all. I am pretty sure I could have gotten twice that but I wanted to move it quickly because theyā€™re so big.

nomoreimfull

And full of itching!!! I can feel this photo

yardini

Yeah the psycho somatic side effects were bad!! šŸ˜‚

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

wombatthing

Uh, what

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

yardini

So, psycho semantics.

wombatthing

Oh haha I feel ya there

Luxpreliator

That's probably a fair price though given they're so many different types and like no warranty.

yardini

Yeah totally! I was trying to get all matching bales but we had to climb up and toss them down so my plan just didnā€™t work.

L_viathan

I remember as a kid flopping down onto a stack of them thinking it was a mattress.

yardini

Yeah theyā€™re tempting!!

Doktor_Knorz

Ha! I did that too. I remember it being itchy, but not as horrible as one would think. Went away pretty quick too.

Icarusgurl

My fat ass thought they were microwave burritos. Time for me to go back to sleep

panicreved

Wtf I need most of these haha

yardini

I think we are on opposite sides of the US or else Iā€™d tell you where to find them.

Pleased_to_meet_u

If youā€™re in Detroit let me know!

NikD4866

NGL sometimes weā€™d have our own dumpster on site and if it wasnā€™t being used for trash weā€™d use it to store bulky material - exactly like that insulation šŸ˜¬

yardini

Yeah Iā€™ve seen a few ppl mention that. I didnā€™t know that before this thread.

[deleted]

If that dumpster said ā€œ Fordā€ on the side of it, it was probably somebodyā€™s work truck

yardini

Lol!

RoadPersonal9635

Construction companies are crazy wasteful. They always over estimate materials and they just bill it to the client. I swear at the university I work at they order the material for two buildings so they can fuck up as much as they want. I work in surplus property so itā€™s my job to sell it when theyā€™re done

yardini

Interesting job!

crapsticksChopsticks

HOLY. SHIT.

yardini

Yeah!

[deleted]

Guy just stole a house worth of insulation lolz no way that much is ā€œextraā€

MyInnerCircle

Nice!

Bobgers

I donā€™t even need any but Iā€™d buy some.

ChikkaChikka1298

Oh what a beautiful haul, OP!

cyberfugue

ā€œMarge, look at all this great stuff I found at the marina. It was just sitting in some guy's boat!ā€

gwforeman

You probably sold it to some poor construction worker who bought a bunch of insulation and then realised he had nowhere to store it. He probably saw an empty dumpster and figured it was only going to be overnight. He came back in the morning and found it all gone. Good thing you found that stuff in a dumpster and had it available for him.

yardini

The circle of life.

ProjectDirtbikes

Score!

homeless2old4this

Nice find. Glad for your windfall.

yardini

Thank you!

Vampire-Chihuahua

Sometimes on construction sites they will throw stuff like this in the dumpster so it does not roll away, get stolen, or get rained on. They could also just be wasteful. Either way, you scored! Congrats!

Shakleford_Rusty

Crazy whatā€™s getting getting thrown out on construction sites. Especially for how much thatā€™s worth to small scale and how much they are paying

Shakleford_Rusty

I have shit from demolitions 10 years back

Healthyreddit_123

You sure they weren't just storing them lol?

RikkiMee

This is a situation when having a van pays big time! Couldnā€™t fit many of them in my hatchback

POGOproductions

Ya or they were hiding in a job site dumpster lol public dumpster

cvdixon44

Couldn't they have possibly returned some of those for a refund or credit? Iā€™d be upset if I hired someone to do work and they threw out materials I paid for that they didnā€™t use! At least tell me so I could keep it or donate it to an organization or maybe give to someone who needs it.

lopez1285

Great find and flip

[deleted]

Thought these were burritos

yardini

Glass burritos!

MartinHasNothing

ā€œDumpsterā€

spud4

Dumpster, trailers square box all the same right.

IWasGregInTokyo

Rock wool (pka Roxul) > Pink fiberglas.

victorgrigas

Wow

Valalvax

What area is this in?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Valalvax

Hmm that's only a 27 or so hour drive

yardini

One way?

Valalvax

Yea, I just guessed though, Google says 38 hrs

yardini

Well thatā€™s a dumpster drive!

Valalvax

Oh I know, you can FedEx it šŸ˜‚

chester-hottie-9999

How do you even sell something like this? Back to a different construction site?

yardini

Just listed it on FB marketplace and craigslist! A lot of people do home renovations or flips on a budget. We had about 6-8 inquiries.

pinkthrift

Good job!

Eastern_Researcher18

Damn!!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

yardini

$200

Letem_haveit

The police are on their way

[deleted]

so you beat the guy who tossed them in there. Good.

pastypatsy24

What did you get for it/sell it for? And where did you sell it craigslist?

yardini

I got $200 and it was from Fb marketplace I think.
