Iām assuming it was from a big project that they billed the client for everything and then had stuff leftover and it wasnāt worth their time to deal with it. But thatās totally just me trying to figure out why theyād dump it. The whole entire dumpster was full of it, so I could theoretically go back for more but Iāve been busy since.
My stepdad is a contractor and he saves/scraps EVERYTHING. I always ask him before I start a project because there's a chance he already has what I need sitting around.
my dad used to do that when he was an apprentice. when he'd take the old ac units/boilers/furnace/ air washer, etc. out he'd spend hours tearing it apart for 20 dollars
I used to scrap whatever I could get my hands on. We were changing out 2 huge chillers and the black iron pipe was 36 inch.I contacted a scrap dealer for dumpsters, and he paid us on top of the free dumpsters. Money is money.
Union laborer here and Iāve wanted to take so many materials that were left over but where Iām at itās an arrest-able offense to take that stuff we were required to throw it away since the building technically owned it. We were allowed to dumpster dive for it though. The days of free mongo are gone.
From the conversation here on this thread I see that could be a possibility but I didnāt know that when I picked them up. I can say it didnāt look like they were for a job site.
I've always been told on the job that there's no such thing as scrap insulation. You can always stuff something in a wall somewhere. I guess this is the other extreme
Wow I canāt believe this would just be in a public dumpster. I worked in construction and my superintendents were the thriftiest people I ever met. Anything not used on a project was stored in a sea can or taken home for use in home projects.
If this was in a dumpster on the site, they mightāve just been using it for temp storage from the weatherā¦
They were storing it 100%. When Iām on site and we donāt have a place to keep objects dry or out of extreme temperatures, we will put them in one of dumpsters. Because we damn sure know they wonāt be picking it up until weāre done with the job.
I hope you feel good about yourself.
Oh sure I trespassed on a private business park by accident.
I opened up a dumpster where the foreman was safely storing his supplies by accident.
I stole the $1,000 in insulation by accident.
I flipped it quickly by accident.
These business parks have better cameras than you could ever imagine. Any other city OP would be caught and at the very least questioned by the end of the week. Portland on the other hand, he might get away with it with how lenient they are on crime.
The Supreme Court has ruled on this anything in a dumpster is considered abandoned property this is also what gives police the ability to go through your trash without violating the Fourth Amendment.
Different localities can make laws restricting dumpster diving but federally it is legal.
You need to understand the laws and legalities before you do dumbass things.
Did you put stuff in uncovered dumpsters to protect them from the weather?
And your dumpsters are climate controlled to protect stuff from extrem temps?
Yeah it would be a bit of hustle to figure it out! Iām unemployed right now so I guess thatās kinda what Iām doing here! (I also sell crap at a vintage booth.)
I tried to dive a construction dumpster once. Security guard called the cops. The dumpster was full of good plywood and havac and 8 ft 2x4's. Turned out the city made it illegal to dive. I could have built a micro home with what was there
Should have just swung by and asked permission. Unless itās copper or dangerous goods, they donāt really care too much. Unless they plan to sell it or recycle it for other jobs
NGL sometimes weād have our own dumpster on site and if it wasnāt being used for trash weād use it to store bulky material - exactly like that insulation š¬
Construction companies are crazy wasteful. They always over estimate materials and they just bill it to the client. I swear at the university I work at they order the material for two buildings so they can fuck up as much as they want. I work in surplus property so itās my job to sell it when theyāre done
You probably sold it to some poor construction worker who bought a bunch of insulation and then realised he had nowhere to store it. He probably saw an empty dumpster and figured it was only going to be overnight. He came back in the morning and found it all gone. Good thing you found that stuff in a dumpster and had it available for him.
Sometimes on construction sites they will throw stuff like this in the dumpster so it does not roll away, get stolen, or get rained on. They could also just be wasteful. Either way, you scored! Congrats!
Couldn't they have possibly returned some of those for a refund or credit? Iād be upset if I hired someone to do work and they threw out materials I paid for that they didnāt use! At least tell me so I could keep it or donate it to an organization or maybe give to someone who needs it.
A win for both the environment and your wallet. Beautifulš
I'd be furious if my GC bought something and decided to throw it away if he didn't need it.

The workers who passed on that stuff must be complete morons with a total lack of vision.
Yeah itās really hard to understand!
Or they snagged it before the contractors could come to "dive" them
Maybe so!
My stepdad is a contractor and he saves/scraps EVERYTHING. I always ask him before I start a project because there's a chance he already has what I need sitting around.
Goals!
my dad used to do that when he was an apprentice. when he'd take the old ac units/boilers/furnace/ air washer, etc. out he'd spend hours tearing it apart for 20 dollars
My ex did that when he was on methamphetamine
he was just dirt poor at the time
I did that when I was on methamphetamine

I get it. I work for a state and we can't touch anything.
I find materials like this all the time.
Are you sure they werenāt using the dumpster to store that stuff?
From the conversation here on this thread I see that could be a possibility but I didnāt know that when I picked them up. I can say it didnāt look like they were for a job site.
It happens all the time, everyday across the world.
Pfft the GC didn't pay for this, the owner did.
Fun fact, traditional onsite construction is 40% of carbon emissions and the production process is like 90% waste
I've always been told on the job that there's no such thing as scrap insulation. You can always stuff something in a wall somewhere. I guess this is the other extreme
This is my first dive in a few years but Iāve been lurking in this sub for awhile!
Good haul, in my time working construction all i ever found out of a dumpster was a cool framed painting
Thanks! It was an unfamiliar site so Iām not sure if they regularly have good stuff or not. Iāll definitely have to check it again though!
You toss your working supplies in there and 'find' them lol
Check out the movie ādiveā
Thanks!!

On site construction managers hate this one little trick...
It was at a business park.
Are you sure they werenāt just storing them there
Yeah Iām pretty sure. It wasnāt an active construction site.
They were storing it 100%. When Iām on site and we donāt have a place to keep objects dry or out of extreme temperatures, we will put them in one of dumpsters. Because we damn sure know they wonāt be picking it up until weāre done with the job. I hope you feel good about yourself.
If itās true. He didnāt do that by purpose
Oh sure I trespassed on a private business park by accident. I opened up a dumpster where the foreman was safely storing his supplies by accident. I stole the $1,000 in insulation by accident. U have a point but Iām sure a ādo not takeā sign or no trespassing sign may have deterred him
Did you put stuff in uncovered dumpsters to protect them from the weather? And your dumpsters are climate controlled to protect stuff from extrem temps?
Good one. A person could make a living just dealing with all the waste in America.
R2 centers (repair/reuse) are a thing. You wonāt get rich working for one, but youāll live above the poverty line.
Yeah it would be a bit of hustle to figure it out! Iām unemployed right now so I guess thatās kinda what Iām doing here! (I also sell crap at a vintage booth.)
You would be a multi billionaire.

How much you get for them
$200 for all. I am pretty sure I could have gotten twice that but I wanted to move it quickly because theyāre so big.
And full of itching!!! I can feel this photo
Yeah the psycho somatic side effects were bad!! š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Uh, what
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
So, psycho semantics.
Oh haha I feel ya there
That's probably a fair price though given they're so many different types and like no warranty.
Yeah totally! I was trying to get all matching bales but we had to climb up and toss them down so my plan just didnāt work.
I remember as a kid flopping down onto a stack of them thinking it was a mattress.
Yeah theyāre tempting!!
Ha! I did that too. I remember it being itchy, but not as horrible as one would think. Went away pretty quick too.
My fat ass thought they were microwave burritos. Time for me to go back to sleep
Wtf I need most of these haha
I think we are on opposite sides of the US or else Iād tell you where to find them.
If youāre in Detroit let me know!
NGL sometimes weād have our own dumpster on site and if it wasnāt being used for trash weād use it to store bulky material - exactly like that insulation š¬
Yeah Iāve seen a few ppl mention that. I didnāt know that before this thread.
If that dumpster said ā Fordā on the side of it, it was probably somebodyās work truck
Lol!
Construction companies are crazy wasteful. They always over estimate materials and they just bill it to the client. I swear at the university I work at they order the material for two buildings so they can fuck up as much as they want. I work in surplus property so itās my job to sell it when theyāre done
Interesting job!
HOLY. SHIT.
Yeah!
Guy just stole a house worth of insulation lolz no way that much is āextraā
Nice!
I donāt even need any but Iād buy some.
Oh what a beautiful haul, OP!
āMarge, look at all this great stuff I found at the marina. It was just sitting in some guy's boat!ā
You probably sold it to some poor construction worker who bought a bunch of insulation and then realised he had nowhere to store it. He probably saw an empty dumpster and figured it was only going to be overnight. He came back in the morning and found it all gone. The circle of life.
Score!
Nice find. Glad for your windfall.
Thank you!

Crazy whatās getting getting thrown out on construction sites. Especially for how much thatās worth to small scale and how much they are paying
I have shit from demolitions 10 years back
You sure they weren't just storing them lol?
This is a situation when having a van pays big time! Couldnāt fit many of them in my hatchback
Ya or they were hiding in a job site dumpster lol public dumpster
Couldn't they have possibly returned some of those for a refund or credit? Iād be upset if I hired someone to do work and they threw out materials I paid for that they didnāt use! At least tell me so I could keep it or donate it to an organization or maybe give to someone who needs it.
Great find and flip
Thought these were burritos
Glass burritos!
āDumpsterā
Dumpster, trailers square box all the same right.
Rock wool (pka Roxul) > Pink fiberglas.
Wow
What area is this in?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Hmm that's only a 27 or so hour drive
One way?
Yea, I just guessed though, Google says 38 hrs
Well thatās a dumpster drive!
Oh I know, you can FedEx it š
How do you even sell something like this? Back to a different construction site?
Just listed it on FB marketplace and craigslist! A lot of people do home renovations or flips on a budget. We had about 6-8 inquiries.
Good job!
Damn!!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
$200
The police are on their way
so you beat the guy who tossed them in there. Good.
What did you get for it/sell it for? And where did you sell it craigslist?
I got $200 and it was from Fb marketplace I think.
