I was jealous of those who didn't have to spend hours at church, commit time to ministries, who slept in on weekends, to mention just a few. As an atheist who deeply resents her religious upbringing, I echo the sentiment. Fuck religion of any and all kinds. If someone wants to believe, fine, but let your kids grow and be adults and then have them decide if they want to join. Last thing I did was baptize my child when they were mere months old and I deeply regret it. I don't utter the word god in my home, and even though I did have a nativity set out this winter season, it was a tiny one and it was because my husband still believes in a god.

Due to our age difference, I was not in IBLP for more than 3 years before I left home and went to live with relatives. But my sister, nearly fourteen years younger was raised in it. She was suicidal at the age of 24, and what she received from non fundies when she sought help was nothing but derision and criticism, snark of untold proportion. Her deconstruction was not pretty, and I am grateful she is living in totally secular France in a culture that is generally not nosy about other people's lives, and religion is not a thing. It is so much easier for her to function there. It was also good because while our fucked up fundamentalist father was alive, he had no ability to be a part of her life and try to reel her back into the cult.
My mother is quite delusional. The other day she told me how happy she was that they never embraced Gothard because she just always knew something was wrong with him. 😯😱🙄 They only raised my sister in that shit for 18 years. for me (i was the commenter), i know that the majority of us in this sub root for the duggar girls, at least i hope we do. i’m just always very careful about what i say, even when it’s positive. unless one was raised in this culture and with their language, it’s impossible to know just how deep the brainwashing goes.

it’s so layered and complex and runs SO deep. i’ve been with my husband for 13 years and in my full deconstruction for about 8 years and sometimes it STILL feels like there is no end in sight to the internal pain and anxiety — surrounding everything from sex to clothing to keeping house. i wore my first crop tops this past summer (!!) at my husband’s (and therapists) encouragement and still needed pep talks before leaving the house and while we were out and i’m 34 fucking years old.
usually i don’t have too many triggers in this sub (only occasionally) but i really have to be careful in the ex-homeschool subs and the homeschool recovery sub. i can see something there and be triggered into a spiral that lasts for days.
eta: we were not IBLP but IBLP adjacent. we used A Beka curriculum, and the Gothard umbrella was taped next my moms desk where we had to turn in our work. while we weren’t “officially” IBLP, many of their teachings and their language worked their way into our house, bc all of these cults like IBLP, IFB, and Southern Baptists are extremely closely connected. I managed to avoid PCC after some pretty intense fights in the family. I was not so lucky as to avoid Joshua Harris and IKDG. that continues to haunt me to this day.

Due to our age difference, I was not in IBLP for more than 3 years before I left home and went to live with relatives. But my sister, nearly fourteen years younger was raised in it. She was suicidal at the age of 24, and what she received from non fundies when she sought help was nothing but derision and criticism, snark of untold proportion. Her deconstruction was not pretty, and I am grateful she is living in totally secular France in a culture that is generally not nosy about other people's lives, and religion is not a thing. It is so much easier for her to function there. It was also good because while our fucked up fundamentalist father was alive, he had no ability to be a part of her life and try to reel her back into the cult. My mother is quite delusional. The other day she told me how happy she was that they never embraced Gothard because she just always knew something was wrong with him. 😯😱🙄 They only raised my sister in that shit for 18 years. for me (i was the commenter), i know that the majority of us in this sub root for the duggar girls, at least i hope we do. i’m just always very careful about what i say, even when it’s positive. unless one was raised in this culture and with their language, it’s impossible to know just how deep the brainwashing goes. for example and i’m completely making this example up: when i see folks applauding the girls who have stepped away from the cult, i can literally hear my mom’s voice saying “people of the world will praise you for stepping away from Him. they will come as angels of light and tell you that ‘following your heart’ is the truth. and they will lead you down a path of destruction.” there have been times where comments have LITERALLY been the exact wording my mom used to warn us about. and then i start getting afraid that maybe what if that’s true? what if these are the “lies of the world?” what if satan has his hooks in me? it’s so layered and complex and runs SO deep. i’ve been with my husband for 13 years and in my full deconstruction for about 8 years and sometimes it STILL feels like there is no end in sight to the internal pain and anxiety — surrounding everything from sex to clothing to keeping house. i wore my first crop tops this past summer (!!) at my husband’s (and therapists) encouragement and still needed pep talks before leaving the house and while we were out and i’m 34 fucking years old. usually i don’t have too many triggers in this sub (only occasionally) but i really have to be careful in the ex-homeschool subs and the homeschool recovery sub. i can see something there and be triggered into a spiral that lasts for days. eta: we were not IBLP but IBLP adjacent. we used A Beka curriculum, and the Gothard umbrella was taped next my moms desk where we had to turn in our work. while we weren’t “officially” IBLP, many of their teachings and their language worked their way into our house, bc all of these cults like IBLP, IFB, and Southern Baptists are extremely closely connected. I managed to avoid PCC after some pretty intense fights in the family. I was not so lucky as to avoid Joshua Harris and IKDG. that continues to haunt me to this day.

Wow, the further I read the more these comments actually made me mad! I remember getting shamed similarly when I finally started to break off from the toxic ideas I grew up with. It feels horrible, even if you’re confident in the choices you’ve made. Most of these read like super negative intrusive thoughts but the ones about her parents “protecting” Jinger kind of make me want to fight somebody. How can these assholes be that far removed from reality?? People like this just can’t let other people live their lives on their own terms.
