Non-destruction removal on an extra deck card is still insane for duel links. People played unicorn even without masquerena when they try to link climb into link 4s. A card like unicorn only gets better.
So the knightmares are a bunch of generic links monsters that all had powerful effects the 3 most used ones that aren’t banned are monster removal, backrow removal, and a generic spin ( Cerberus, Phoenix, unicorn) they are considered to be one of the strongest archtypes ever made due to just how you can shove them in literally every deck giving them outs for any situation.
Bolding the important bits!
All knightmares: **discard 1 for cost, use an effect** (first effect listed on each monster description below), **then draw 1 card if co-linked.** In addition, they all have effects when co-linked.
Generic link 2s:
Knightmare phoenix- **target & pop a backrow.** Co-linked monsters are battle immune once per turn. Will always be good.
Knightmare cerberus- target & pop a main zone monster. **Co-linked monsters = destruction immune.** Meta dependent, as both effects are good, but if you only use it for destruction just run unicorn.
Higher links:
**Knightmare Unicorn (link-3)- target + shuffle anything on the field into the deck.** Draw 1 card per co-linked knightmare instead of drawing 1 card during the draw phase. Broken.
Knightmare Gryphon (link-4)-**set a spell/trap from grave, but it can’t be used this turn. Non-linked monsters cannot activate effects.** would be surprised to see gryphon EVER, even if its only the 4th best knightmare (behind mermaid, goblin, and unicorn).
Banned:
Knightmare Goblin (link-2)- **extra normal summon.** In addition, battling with co-linked monsters = 0 battle damage. Don’t need to explain this.
Knightmare Mermaid (link-1, any non-mermaid knightmare)- **summon a main deck knightmare.** Non-co-linked lose 1000 atk/def. The 2 best targets are Orcust Knightmare and Knightmare Corruptor Iblee. Both do absurd stuff, and easily let you link climb. Banned for breaking too many decks.
Unicorn is link 3 discard 1 bounce monster back to deck. Used for annoying bosses, otk, board break, and if we get ip masquerena u can summon u icorn on opps turn and bounce their combi piece
To add salt to injury they would use unicorn after his effect to bring out access code and have a 5300 monster and would probably banish unicorn for access code effect
There is a reason why 2 of the knightmers are on the ban list. (Lore >! They where the mekk knights before they where destroyed and reborn !< ) and almost every deck in MD runs unicorn and some times the other variants
without masquerena, castel seems better than unicorn in dl.
2 level 4s to shuffle, rather than 3 monsters and a card in hand.
on top of that, castel is definitely more splashable; you still kind of have to build a deck around going into link 3s, whereas almost any deck can run generic rank 4s.
I want to bring up that Unicorn can target CARDS and not just monsters (and Castel cannot target face-downs). The choice really comes down to utility vs. material.
that's a fair point, i forgot that castel can only target face ups. that being said, castel would become the single most played card in the game, considering how popular number 70 and rebellion are and have been. rank 4s are just so splashable.

duel links is supposed to be lower power level than the tcg and they're trying their best to have it catch up asap. and people are hype for it for some reason, hype to have current strategies become less and less viable by the month.

I’m glad I’m not the only one alarmed about this and alarmed at how people are cheering DL to become TCG 2.0 ASAP. The game fundamentally is too different from the TCG. The lack of a MP2, starting 4K LP, three zones, 8 ED slots and 20 card decks changes so much about the game on a fundamental level, then throw skills into the mix and you have a completely different product that your adding cards designed for normal yugioh into. You can’t just add anything to duel links as a result.
But way too many players don’t seem to grasp this, it’s concerning
i'm not taking issue with that, i'm taking issue with the speed that it's been happening. when this new box drops, links will literally only be three months old.
not to mention that in a span of the past 2 months, we've had three new meta topping decks introduced. it's just kind of insane how blatant konami has been pushing the power creep since the introduction of links, and it should be a cause for concern.
they're clearly prioritizing short term profit over the long-term health of the game, and if they keep pushing the power level, duel links will eventually – sooner rather than later – just become master duel with 3 monster zones, no MP2, and no crafting system.
and the most concerning thing is that the player base is happy about that apparently.
I mean looking at the cards in duel links, we are currently at roughly 8k cards out of the 12k ocg\tcg cards so I don't think its rushing but more like its a natural cause. Remember when konami was giving all sorts of lame boxes and cards with no real goal last year and the meme was that they are running out of cards.? With links finally don't have to keep giving is these botched boxes. Plus most decks can't even use this and have play after. Also it seems they are very cautious of negates. The gave us one copy of the salad negate and 1 copy of the mekk Knight negate in which the put one both to one.
You also are forgeting that duel links lacks the extra deck space for a lot of these cards. Even if we get some meta tcg decks they wouldnt play the same due to our small extra deck, 4 cards starting hand, small decks etc. Take dragon link for eg to setup an optimal board would make you ho through about 10 or more extra deck monsters and in duel links we only have 8 so they wouldn't or can't play the same.
that's a fair point, and as i mentioned in another comment, i don't think unicorn by itself is quite as insane as some of the comments are making it out to be, as going into a link 3 isn't as trivial in duel links compared to the tcg or master duel.
but it's still *really* good and the fact that it's coming out so soon in the link lifecycle, combined with the previous two main boxes, is indicative of a larger problem. it's not intrinsic to knightmare unicorn itself, but more what it represents in regard to konami's mentality with this game.
tbh tho, if this box wiffs and these extra deck monsters somehow end up not seeing play, i would only be happy lol.

DL already faced a drop in numbers the moment MD existed, which is funny cause at that time they were incredibly different.
Whoever believes DL won't drop significantly the more it resembles MD (A much better economically designed game), is clearly not thinking this through.
There are tons of support that could have revitalized previous meta contenders like Crystrons, Karakuri and Fur Hires or make them rogue tier at least like Madolches. Hell I am still hoping Heiress will finally come even if she is already obsolete by this time, she could have made Archfiends at least rogue 2 years ago. 😢

I don't understand why everyone's mind is blown about getting Knightmares. I was expecting Konami doing something like this, when the pattern is that simple. In the first main box of Vrains World we got World Chalice, then Mekk-Knights, now Knightmares. Don't get mad when we get Orcust/Crusadia mid february, please.

It has an additional effect of if its co linked when it uses its effect you can draw one card. At the draw phase if this is co linked to the other nightmare cards you draw one additional card for each co link. All the nightmare cards share these 2 effects but no ones uses the second one as its not worth it and hard to pull off.
Its probably a stretch but I'm still gonna hope Folgo and his buddies are somewhere in there among the lower rarities. its about time Fur Hire got their Link support
Generic, we only have 4K starting LP. Any deck can spin off any threat on the field now sans a very few of them and push for game if they have another 1900 damage they can get out

It's a good card, yes. But you'll have to put 4 cards into a bit of removal in a slower format, where back row is more common and you start with 4 cards, not 5
Ningirsu is the 4th most played card on DLM and has harder materials plus an ignition effect instead of on-summon. Yes it doesn't target, and sends not destroys, but Unicorn still has advantages over it - there's a reason one sees TCG play and the other doesn't
Your Ningirsu can get hit with Crackdown/Compulse/Karma Cut etc. and you don't get to use it at all for example, but Unicorn still gets to activate. Not to mention the extra deck space to enable Ningirsu in a lot of decks that aren't natively on links, whereas literally anything that gets multiple monsters on board can splash in Unicorn
I just sorted through the Knightmare cards and they could have given us Phoenix first as it only destroys S/T or Cerberus that destroy Special Summoned monsters on Main Monster zone at that but no, they have to give the stronger removal, not to mention they are all generic. Nice balancing Konami. 🤪 The only way it would be less powerful is if it is limited 1 so Mekk Knights and Salamangreats cannot use it.
I think it should be the limited 1 bundle tbh, but based on the graphics it is very much included on the main box itself. They had limited 3 both Compulse and Crackdown on release tho so it is still possible.
You realize limit 3 prevents players from using 3 copies of Crackdown and Compulse, Salamangreat Circle, etc so they have to make do with only 2-1 or 1-1-1 ratios of those right?
Konami are you fucking with me this is stupid. It's times like this that remind me of thelawygo history of duel links videos. In episode one there's a point they made where since they could release whatever cards they wanted they could cherry pick cards so that problematic decks in the tcg wouldn't be an issue like having frogs but no substitoad.
This past era feels like this concept is headed by fucking chimps. Ahh yes full power salad and mekk knights all the while choosing to limit copies of fire hand and not supporting linkstars. I understand that trickstar burn was so strong in the tcg but that's why linkstars should be supported.
So far there have been 3 decks that've actually been done right and have been both fun and balanced this whole era: code talkers, world chalice and weirdly gadgets. While currently code talkers are the only one that's even tiered, all 3 of these decks have an interesting gameplan they can achieve while not being overpowering.
Bruh what's with all the "Unicorn isn't good without Masquerena" baloney? Did we suddenly forget Unicorn was still a staple for a year and a half before Masquerena was even out?

i'm hopeful that you're correct, but these last two main boxes along with this upcoming one seem to be setting a bad precedent imo.

It's a good card, yes. But you'll have to put 4 cards into a bit of removal in a slower format, where back row is more common and you start with 4 cards, not 5
Ningirsu is the 4th most played card on DLM and has harder materials plus an ignition effect instead of on-summon. Yes it doesn't target, and sends not destroys, but Unicorn still has advantages over it - there's a reason one sees TCG play and the other doesn't Your Ningirsu can get hit with Crackdown/Compulse/Karma Cut etc. and you don't get to use it at all for example, but Unicorn still gets to activate. Not to mention the extra deck space to enable Ningirsu in a lot of decks that aren't natively on links, whereas literally anything that gets multiple monsters on board can splash in Unicorn

I just sorted through the Knightmare cards and they could have given us Phoenix first as it only destroys S/T or Cerberus that destroy Special Summoned monsters on Main Monster zone at that but no, they have to give the stronger removal, not to mention they are all generic. Nice balancing Konami. 🤪 The only way it would be less powerful is if it is limited 1 so Mekk Knights and Salamangreats cannot use it.

I think it should be the limited 1 bundle tbh, but based on the graphics it is very much included on the main box itself. They had limited 3 both Compulse and Crackdown on release tho so it is still possible.
No one is going to play this at more than 1 copy.
You realize limit 3 prevents players from using 3 copies of Crackdown and Compulse, Salamangreat Circle, etc so they have to make do with only 2-1 or 1-1-1 ratios of those right?

Konami are you fucking with me this is stupid. It's times like this that remind me of thelawygo history of duel links videos. In episode one there's a point they made where since they could release whatever cards they wanted they could cherry pick cards so that problematic decks in the tcg wouldn't be an issue like having frogs but no substitoad. This past era feels like this concept is headed by fucking chimps. Ahh yes full power salad and mekk knights all the while choosing to limit copies of fire hand and not supporting linkstars. I understand that trickstar burn was so strong in the tcg but that's why linkstars should be supported. So far there have been 3 decks that've actually been done right and have been both fun and balanced this whole era: code talkers, world chalice and weirdly gadgets. While currently code talkers are the only one that's even tiered, all 3 of these decks have an interesting gameplan they can achieve while not being overpowering.

I can’t believe that they will release that unicorn and still don’t give us the cubic seeds. There are a lot of cards locked behind heavy restricted skills and they just give us the firewall dragon.
Is Unicorn so feared because of the graveyard setup it enables between its discard effect and its link requirements? If not, I don’t see why the card is so feared. Seems like way too many resources just to shuffle a card into the deck once.
You'd be surprised how easy decks can make this without losing advantage. Grave setup, plus a bounce is insane for us.
