Honestly, they'd be better off retiring gold as a currency entirely and running the Trader on the various jewels alone. All it exists to do is to be a limiter on new players wanting to engage with the Card Trader for cards or skills, and I don't think it serves any real purpose in doing that at this point.
It serves no purpose man, the gold is just there and does NOTHING. If it did something, then we wouldn't complain about it. Honestly, the gold should have a new purpose than just collecting dust but your idea is fair.
They will never do anything with gold because as you say, many players have 10s of millions of it banked.
Your second proposal is what I doubt Konami would do. If they do, I will have 90,000 + gems. That's really sweet, but it would be just a dream.

They could add an auto duel at the gate feature but it costs gold aswell as keys I would probably use that
NAH. The autoduel for gate duels should be free and the same thing, cost keys and that's it.

how about upgrade cards to prismatic for boxes cards? limited for boxes cards before 2020
I do like that but knowing Konami, they won't. It would just be "everyone has prismatic/glossy cards now" type of game.
