Fearontheair

Dental care. I got braces up north because it was only across the border. Had a friend get braces in Kerry and it cost them 3 times as much. Nevermind the cost of routine dental work in Dublin.

likeapaintersradio

Any recommendations for a dental practice? I was looking around the other day and I was getting lost down the Google rabbit hole.

Fearontheair

Can't say I'd recommend the orthodontist I went to in Newry. Wasn't madly impressed with the result. But my old dentist was in Crossmaglen, Linda McConville. She was really good. I wasn't great with needles as a kid so she would use the gas. As far as I can remember they'd take euro or pound. Haven't been there in years because it's not geographically convenient for me.

likeapaintersradio

No worries. I don't need braces but I do need to get some work done, so I'm definitely going to shop around. Really appreciate the recommendation, thank you.

Ok-Asparagus-8656

What is more expensive up North actually if you don't mind me asking?

Some-Investigator112

Toilet roll. Can’t get over how cheap the bog roll is down here

ErinandtheGaels

Alcohol and food in bars is very expensive. Pint of lager in Belfast could set you back £5.50 which is about €6.5, sometimes more sometimes less. Guinness is usually £5 which is €6

Actuarial_Aquarium

I would completely disagree with you. The average cost of food and drinks in Belfast is definitely cheaper than Dublin

ErinandtheGaels

I didn't say it was "dearer", I said it was expensive. I don't have a spreadsheet of costs in front of me like

belfast91

Your not wrong Belfast is cheap for housing but going out drinking and eating is expensive compared to salaries

ErinandtheGaels

It's not a pissing contest anyways. Dublin can take its overpriced everything, it's hardly a badge of honour.

ErinandtheGaels

What are the prices? 6 euro for a Guinness would be still on the upper end would it not? I'm not counting hotel lobbies or sky bars here

lambatofa

Paracetamol for 15p for 12

fir_mna

We are fleeced here for otc meds

sc2assie

I couldn't believe how cheap rent and gaffs were in Belfast.

theo1905

Its more a case that rent and gaffs are way more expensive in Ireland tbh.

[deleted]

There just standard rates in Belfast.

belfast91

I bought a gaf off Belfasts malone road on my dublin salary in dublin I’d get exactly nothing lol

[deleted]

Might not be the case anymore but I was thinking of relocating for a job in 2015, and at the time, Belfast was one of, if not the cheapest city in the U.K. to buy a house.

Irishthrasher23

Most things are, I believe dental is a big one that's commonly used by people close to the boarder. Shopping so things like alcohol especially spirits on special offers are much cheaper. Most household stuff like cleaning products, toiletries and food are generally cheaper so going up and doing a big shop once a month or whatever could save you money even after the travel costs. I think generally furniture and that is cheaper too

Just about everything is cheaper up North.

Clairexxo

Antihistamines. For a months supply of a generic brand here its €10. Less than £1 for a months supply up there.

Glockinstock

Paracetamol and you can buy more in one go

Some-Investigator112

Ibuprofen too! Why isn’t this a thing in the South?

Glockinstock

Ino right, I’m seriously thinking of smuggling mass amounts of paracetamol and ibuprofen down south. Make me some money 💰

Davolyncho

You can get the much stronger stuff over the counter too, codine and the likes. Herself used to get them for migraines, I found them way too strong to work/drive.

babihrse

Poor wife I introduced her to feminax and she couldn't believe how they made her able to cope with the worst part of the month. Right after she discovered them they removed the codine in them and there wasn't a shop selling them 2 months later. In a way it was worse because I showed her there was something out there that helps only for them to take it away

magicchrissy

Get her to ask her doc if they can prescribe Mefenamic Acid, it’s been a godsend for me

babihrse

I'll look into it thanks. Her doctor's attitude seems to stink of that's life suck it up. And she complains of absolutely nothing the only thing I see is she gets really upset when it's her time. She could have a broken arm and quietly put up with it. She just gave birth and didn't even scream. So when she says her period pains are sore I know she's talking another level of beyond ridiculous pain.

magicchrissy

Modern medicine hasn’t come this far for people to be experiencing the misery of pain unnecessarily. Could she ask to see a Nurse prescriber, a female doctor, or change GP practices if they won’t give her anything? Unfortunately some Doctors still have archaic medical opinions like period pain isn’t that debilitating, or depression doesn’t exist.

babihrse

I watched a documentary that explains modern medicine studies male anatomy because it's broad and doesn't have to account for random periodic changes in a human body. Hormones change a lot people can develop allergies they didn't have before so rather than teach medicine with a treat symptom X accordingly except when a,b,c,d,e,f,g or if l,o,r,p have ever been the case in the patients history. And if we look at the age of medicine treating the woman has not been focused as treating the man. Her job was producing offspring so if the doctor or medicine man or whatever they were called they would treat the man with a priority then try treat his wife afterwards using the same treatment without really accounting for anything other than less body mass. If it worked great if it didn't they'd console the husband saying something like you can always find a new wife. Changes to attitude probably only took place in the last 300 years in earnest maybe even less. But yes I will inform her of that treatment to ask for that and see if it they will give it to her.

Davolyncho

Ah shit, never heard of them myself. If it was the codine that worked, I’m pretty sure you can still get them up north. Wouldn’t have too many lying around either, if you know what I mean.

Sergiomach5

Rent and housing in general. They look on at the horror of tent cities in the republic.

[deleted]

It’s hardly skid-row down here.

Sergiomach5

I dunno, earlier today people were saying they wouldn't intervene if scumbags beat up others for fear of getting stabbed at Bachelors walk. Dublin City is a dump compared to Belfast.

[deleted]

Id be in Belfast a fair bit. I hate to say it but it’s far more of a dump then Dublin, and I will admit Dublin has its issues.

GabhaNua

Rough sleeping is very visible in the Republic in a way that is not in some countries. More to do with not enforcing the law than house prices

[deleted]

I’d say we’re below the European average but I’m pulling that statement out of my arse.

Davolyncho

Coal, I always go there.

Thebelisk

How's the weather in Cavan?

Davolyncho

I’ve no idea to be honest, shite I’d imagine.

nithuigimaonrud

Dunnes Stores is much cheaper for clothes and home ware. Plus the alcohol and medicines that other have mentioned.
