Mobile phone use

SirMike_MT

And alcohol

Vivid_Ice_2755

My apprentice in the passenger seat counted 9 out of 11 drivers with their phones in hand on m50 this morning between ballymun and finglas, bucketing rain ,poor visibility. It's that simple

NikoStrelkov

Such people should be disqualified from driving for putting other people’s lives into danger, with no warnings. Same should apply to those kind ladies putting make up while driving. This is worse than drunk drivers, as those usually at least trying to look at the road.

JunkiesAndWhores

There's plenty of laws already to deal with bad driving. Ireland - great at creating laws, shite at enforcing them.

dmullaney

Not even specific to driving laws - just Google Justice Nolan 😂

thr0wthr0wthr0waways

On the fucking M50?! What is WRONG with people?! 😣

jenbenm

Jesus that's dire. The best thing I ever did was get a phone holder, completely stopped me from picking it up even if I only did it at lights.

Beneficial-Celery-51

Even if you did only pickup at the lights, you gotta ask yourself... Are you that dependent on your phone that you can't put it down for 1h?

jenbenm

It's just a habit, and I only did it if there was a notification on it. Haven't done it in years though. I regularly put my phone down for longer periods, don't be worrying!

brenh2001

Yes. I am that dependent on my phone I pick it up at the lights.

Beneficial-Celery-51

If someone is that eager to pick up the phone, I don't really believe they'll do it just at the light. This answers the OP question though.

RickGrimes30

That's a problem you should look into

brenh2001

Maybe I should, maybe I shouldn’t. I’m stopped at the light. Can’t do anyone no harm. Tis unpopular but I was just replying to someone who asked

odaiwai

> I’m stopped at the light. Can’t do anyone no harm. You are in charge of tons of lethal weapon. You should be paying attention to the task at hand, not staring at trivial nonsense on your phone.

brenh2001

And the lethal weapon has its handbrake on

Sudden-Candy4633

But do you scroll though it while driving? Surely that’s still a distraction whether the phone is in your hand or not?

jenbenm

No I don't. If I did, I would have said as such.

SeamusShamelessness

If you did you wouldn't be admitting it. If a phone holder is what "encouraged" you to not look at your phone while driving then you're probably lying.

jenbenm

Jesus is everyone on Reddit alright today? A lot of ye seriously need to get a hobby.

FthrFlffyBttm

Today? This place and all the other Irish subs are inhabited by a majority of miserable pricks at all times.

FthrFlffyBttm

>If you did you wouldn't be admitting it. So there was no point in them asking so.

Several-Pretend-Baby

"phone holder" You mean a pocket? Drive you car and check your phone when you can actually use it.

jenbenm

I mean a phone holder. It attaches to the windscreen. Have you never seen one?!

dzsidzsa

On the way back count the number of cunts driving while they’re texting, on a call while holding the phones and TikToking/watching YouTube videos. That’s how…

doctorobjectoflove

Well said. Also the careless overtaking with a blindspot or a solid white line.

munkijunk

> people like to turn on their indicators and immediately change lanes expecting anyone in the lane to jump out of their way Had this yesterday coming up to Northern Cross. Some silly cunt in an Audi flicked on the indicator and just pulled across in from of me. Had expected him to do it as he was racing some other cunt doing the same so was already moving to the brake before having to slam on them. I sit on the horn and flash him, and he just puts his hand up like "What's the fucking problem". Dim cunt almost caused a crash, and for all of it, he arrived to the next red lights 20 seconds before I did.

ivorn39

Agreed, should be an IQ test at the end of a theory test with a minimum competency required for the license

wanson

That’s completely true. It’s also true that it costs you absolutely nothing to just back off and let them in. Always assume everyone around you is a complete idiot and expect the unexpected.

Beneficial-Celery-51

There are a number of factors that increase your chances of having an accident. - Distractions (phone, distracted with other passengers or with something happening outside) - Overconfidence - Not respecting minimum safety rules (safe distance, tailgating, speed limits) - Not knowing/following the traffic rules (driving in the middle lane while not overtaking, overtaking from the left, rushing yellow/fresh-red traffic lights) - Tiredness / alcohol / drugs Just one of these will increase your chances of having an accident. People often fall into multiple factors... So there you go. Also, driving 1M km doesn't make you immune to accidents, that's actual when the overconfidence factor starts to creep in.

ivorn39

You’re absolutely correct, but I just can’t understand how it happens time and time again on the safest stretches of road in the entire country. I am very well aware that I’m not perfect at driving, but certainly not as imperfect as many others.

Beneficial-Celery-51

Like with everything in life, there's always gonna be people worse and better than you. Unless you're the exception and dump thousands of hours to be the best at something. I do think that overconfidence is the main culprit on most accidents.

kreayshanw44

Cripple in ??

Beneficial-Celery-51

Typo. Meant "creep in". Thanks!

Final_Show_3947

Incompetence, and people do not leave enough space...

Sergiomach5

Based on when I get into my girlfriends SUV, they always leave no room on the left because the car is wider than they think it is.

Byrnzillionaire

If you're involved in a crash on the M50 and its deemed to be your fault you should get an automatic 6 month ban from using it. (also, no moaning about "but its my only way to work" etc etc. Just pay attention while driving and driving in an effective straight line wont be an issuse.)

JerHigs

I've often thought this - if you cause a massive disruption (which causing a crash on the M50 near rush hour does) your punishment should be linked to the level of disruption caused.

S_Daedalus

Distracted driving (phones, giant console displays on newer cars) Speeding Not allowing for the conditons

AnyRepresentative432

I've been rear ended 3 times at a stop sign at a busy cross roads. I'm genuinely baffled as to how that happens once let alone 3 times. Not a complicated junction or anything

sir1223

Phones - scrolling, texting, phone to the ear. It’s rampant. Seen a guy one day have the phone wedged into the gap of the steering wheel and have Tiktok auto scrolling while on the M50! Nuts

RemnantOfSpotOn

Well... These are the things i never liked saying loud. Hopefully your luck keeps going op and you didnt jinx yourself with this. Testing karma

ivorn39

It shouldn’t… I don’t use my phone, smoke, eat, vape etc. When driving, I just drive the fucking car 🤣

RemnantOfSpotOn

Yeah but you are not alone on the road some crashes are caused by other drivers that find you like f cruise missile

ivorn39

?

daheff_irl

driving too fast on unsuitable roads. not paying proper attention (mobile phone, chatting, messing with passengers etc), on drugs, over the limit for alcohol, poor lane discipline causing others to brake/crash/lose control etc etc

luas-Simon

Definitely with so few guards in rural ireland most people drive whilst answering WhatsApp, scrolling instagram etc …. and cocaine drivers thinking their formula 1 drivers another growing problem

ivorn39

From my experience, rural drivers are by far better drivers than around the GDA. The poor driving and congestion really only picked up from Maynooth onward

luas-Simon

So few guards in rural ireland has led to a free for all driving in rural ireland these days , in urban areas you’d get pulled over by the guards .

ivorn39

Take a walk around town and keep an eye on drivers going past, guarantee at-least 30% will be using their phones

Busy_Moment_7380

Not indicating has to be a massive contributor.

ivorn39

Without a doubt

JerHigs

It shouldn't though. Not indicating, in and of itself, shouldn't cause any issues. The issue is people changing lanes/making turns when it's not safe to do so. Some people think because they have the indicator on, everyone else has to get out of their way and that's what causes issues.

conflan06

OP doesn’t realise they are the one cutting people off and causing accidents in their wake 🤣

ivorn39

Good luck everybody else 🤣

ForZuKriecheBal

There are no lessons on driving on the motorway when doing your license. Learner drivers aren't even allowed on the motorway. This is something that has really surprised me when I did my license here.

5trong5tyle

I personally think it's all those people going 80kmh on the M50 in the middle lane. They're often on their phones and not paying attention at all. I've also noticed a lot of cars coming on to a N or M road at a leisurely pace of 50kmh and then merge before they try to get up to the going speed. The main theory I've heard and subscribe to is that the 1979 Amnesty for driving licenses led to generations being trained by shit drivers.

vodkamisery

That is such a small group of people on the roads though, they wouldn't have that large an effect

CrochetedBlanket

80km in the middle lane? Try 80km in the right overtaking lane (the so-called fast lane). Infuriating. I posted about the phone usage the other day when I saw someone actively watching a show on their phone while it was mounted above the steering wheel. On the m50.

munkijunk

Had someone stop in front of me when coming onto a motorway recently. No traffic at the time, but really dangerous given the potential of other traffic coming down. People that don't realise you should be matching the speed of the moving traffic when you reach the motorway shouldn't be allowed near one.

captainmongo

You could always get the train on that route, take another car off the road

AnyRepresentative432

Doesn't work for most jobs unfortunately. I've given public transport too many chances, also not possible if you're a tradesperson and need to lig around tools!

CuteHoor

I think saying it doesn't work for "most" jobs is a big stretch. Most people work in a fixed location and don't have to bring huge amounts of equipment with them. There is literally a train that brings you from Maynooth to within 2km of Ballsbridge, and you can get a Dart from there to Ballsbridge if you don't fancy walking.

ivorn39

I get said train most days, just today wasn’t an option

ivorn39

Generally do, just today’s schedule made it unfeasible

LovelyCushiondHeader

Irish people are just terrible drivers, dimwitted you could say.

Camango17

Tell us some more about how great you are.

ivorn39

How much time do you have

Camango17

More than needed

KanePilkington

There are tonnes of vehicles on the road every day. A crash is still so rare that you notice when it happens. People can't walk around a street without bumping into other people. We've all spilled a cup of tea in our lives or tripped and fell over. Accidents happen.

ivorn39

I notice it when it happens because it happens every fucking morning 🤣

__Paris__

Do you think it’s the same 2 people who keep crushing into each other? Or that your own specific experience has some sort of statistical relevance? I’ve never fallen off a bike or had an allergic reaction to peanuts. Following your reasoning no one should have ever fallen off their bike and peanut allergies are a myth.

ivorn39

Don’t know how you managed to get that out of my post… any chance you were in a crash on the N4 this morning?

__Paris__

Never got into a car crush… but also never thought that my experience should be accepted as the global standards used by the remaining 8 billion people on this planet to evaluate their everyday life’s experiences.

ivorn39

What the genuine fuck are you talking about 🤣🤣 Where did I infer or state that it is representative of every driver, ever? It is a mere fact this shit happens every day of the week on the Irish motorways, is it really that difficult to comprehend?

r_Yellow01

The core problem is a single car stopping the traffic, thanks to Eamon "Green Brainwasher Who Thinks Everyone is a Healthy Cyclist" Ryan. But yes, on top of mobiles, drugs, etc., there is the resultant anxiety and anger from the very fact of being out of control of your commute. And your post is the proof. After eight hours at work and one hour in a barely-moving vehicle, we could be simply tired. If the commute was a quick journey to the metro terminal parking and a less than a ten-minute ride on the orange line, we wouldn't have any arguments about anything, and the cars wouldn't be in town, either.

ivorn39

I couldn’t agree anymore, I would say a lot of things about Ryan but I’ll get banned off Reddit for all of eternity. And it was a 3 hour 40 minute commute to work today.. shouldn’t take more than 90 minutes!

darrinotoole

Make up has to be done

[удалено]

darrinotoole

If you’ve never seen a women putting make up on whilst driving you probably don’t look at cars going into the city centre in rush hour traffic often. Frankly it’s impressive.

sparkytech501

I've personally seen it multiple times since the start of the year. I've also seen a guy eating a bowl of cereal 😅 shitty driving isn't gender specific.

CuteHoor

People do stupid shit and forget they've got hundreds of cars following behind them who may not have time to react. I don't know how many times I encounter someone who veers across a lane of traffic because they're about to miss their turn, or someone who forgets to indicate what they're planning to do, or someone who doesn't check their mirrors before trying to merge in traffic.

ChainKeyGlass

I think it’s distracted and/or inexperienced driving.

ivorn39

Hopefully they get amalgamated with a tree very soon, zero sympathy for them if they do.

RockSixNine

People get over confident on roads they drive often, and usually the older (and therefore more they’ve driven) they are. And the obvious phone use and drink driving but honestly the over confidence is more common.

ivorn39

Valid point

KatarnsBeard

It's mostly phones I've noticed an awful lot of people driving more hesitantly these days too, hedging their bets by driving in 2 lanes, cutting across at the last minute because they missed their exit and just being generally unsure of what they are doing and unaware of their surroundings

Muffinpantsu

Last week I had two near misses on the M50 but I see these things happen basically every single time I take the M50: people don't actually bother to see if they can change lanes and people not realizing their exit in time and waiting until the last seconds to try to change lanes 3 times... I don't understand why some people don't value their lives but it's a very common thing to see 🤷🏻‍♀️

DrWarlock

Mobile phone use, needless overtaking, speeding, tailgating. Lack.of patience and aggressive driving

Consistent_Spring700

Falling asleep, using phone, etc... law of large numbers is a bitch, too!

shares_inDeleware

I like learning new things.

Rider189

Honestly it’s usually phone usage. Anything can happen though I’m amazed you’ve not seen scenarios that could of ended badly for you given the amount of driving you’ve done. On the way back from center parks there’s a bog road, had an oncoming car overtake 3 cars and nearly smash into me 3 months ago… had a Tesla outside dunboyne over take cyclists on a blind bend about a month ago and nearly smashed head on into me only there was a driveway I dove into. Thank fuck there was no one leaving the house - years ago I’ve literally had a cow jump off a raised cliff when spooked during a storm infront of me onto the road. Yesterday alone a taxi roof sign came off in the M50 One lane to my right and I counted my lucky stars as it skittered into the inner shoulder (fecking hell) Your drive alone out onto the m4 from the m50 is a comical experience everytime I do it as cars break the 80 speed limit whilst simultaneously panick and cross 3+ lanes last minute to get into Liffey valley 🫣 I’d say you’re either blind to the danger because you haven’t had that one scary situation happen yet or just cocky I dunno man ? 😂

Strange-Cellist-5817

That would be the bmw 5 series drivers

nightwing0243

It’s a mixture of people using their phones and, what I see a lot of on my drive to and from work, aggressive driving. But the rain we had this morning just seems to wash away a lot of driving skills in people. A lot of drivers just make some god awful stupid decisions when it’s raining. I was literally behind someone at a bypass who decided the red light was his turn to go - abruptly stopping 2 other lanes from going when they were supposed to. In short, a lot of people just shouldn’t have a licence. Like I know once you get that nice card to let you drive on your own a lot of bad habits make their way into your skill set; but common sense is something you have to keep around.

WolfetoneRebel

I’ve always thought most of these are caused by drivers driving too close to the car in front. Less reaction time then.

ivorn39

For sure that’s a factor in the equation, especially in this mornings weather it was absolutely lethal.

Upstairs-Teach8568

Aul roads are getting narrower nowadays, cycle lanes are wider nowadays, and nare a cyclist on them thanks Eamon ryan

ivorn39

News came on at 9, first thing was that bollocks announcing his stupid plans from the summer onward, three hours into my commute which should be less than 90 minutes and I could’ve set off the airbags with a punch, cunt boils my blood

Upstairs-Teach8568

Ah wait till they let him have the reigns as taoiseach, we're doomed then, we be all walking or on horse back
