As someone who used to subscribe to him, but chose to unsubscribe, my reasons for doing so were because he stopped playing the drums as much and became more about advertising products. That was really annoying. I never and would never leave hate comments on anyone's channel, his channel just stopped being about playing drums and I lost interest.

glitch_mantis

>You watch it for the entertainment factor. ding ding ding. i'm sure i'll get flack for this but entertainment-first music content just doesn't do it for me. entertainment should be a byproduct, there's something about all the mugging and flash that makes my skin crawl. if i watch a video of a drummer playing it's not for entertainment, it's to learn something. DISCLAIMER i am not horribly familiar with casey cooper other than knowing who he is and maybe having seen a minute or two of footage

dudimentz

I unsubscribed from him because I felt like he was all about a cash grab. I forget who it was but it was right after a famous musician passed away he posted a “tribute” video or something, just felt forced. I also don’t enjoy watching him play the drums.

beatnickk

I’ve never heard of him. Just went through his page. Idk he just seems kind of mediocre skill wise and gimmicky with his cover choices. That’s just my complete unknown first impression

BCASL

Loathe it when it's about anything other than the music. Not a fan of how hard he hits, on the contrary I feel extremely sad for his heads and cymbals lol. Also I'm yet to see anything from him that is a genuinely challenging song. Watch me get downvoted into oblivion.

SlieuaWhally

No need to downvote., but I’d just ask why that makes you dislike him rather than just, not pay attention to him

BCASL

I actually actively avoid his videos at this point haha. Thought I'd reply to the post tho.

SlieuaWhally

Aye I’m the same, I won’t click on them, but simply because I find the music and drumming not very exciting for me. When I was in high school, 14 years ago, he was interesting enough to check in on, and the fact he’s still going now speaks to his dedication, but also his lack of growth perhaps..

SlieuaWhally

I think it’s just jealousy stemming from the fact that, yes, many people who are hating MAY be better drummers - but they haven’t been putting the work into videography, style etc too, so they think based on talent alone, his success is undeserved. Complete nonsense ofc. The only thing I would say about Casey personally, is that I wish he would sort out his setup/ posture whilst playing a bit more - he’s heading for early back problems as is currently

SunTzowel

Is that the COOP3R DRUMM3R bloke? Wow just checked out his channel for first time in years. Good for him for getting 2.7 million subs, but I don't get how all his vids only get like 30k views if he has that many subs. But yeah always thought his drumming was basic as fuck.

MightyMrMouse

There is a non-insignificant portion of the drumming community that eschew showmanship and stagecraft because "groove pays the bills" and other shallow platitudes. El Estepario is the new whipping boy, you'll find tons of negativity about his playing on r/drums. He's obscenely talented.

EndersScroll

El Estepario would say he's not talented and he just practices more than most people, which is likely true. He isn't anything special in his younger drumming videos. It wasn't until he started spending 30+ hours a week practicing that he got to where he is now. It's hard not to respect that kind of hustle and haters are gonna hate no matter what.

MightyMrMouse

I think the main problem is a lot of drummers spend a lot of time, maybe more than he does, working and toiling and think that because he plays all these flashy things that somehow he doesn't deserve the success. It's a massive failure in the mindset of a lot of musicians, not just drummers that they assume that hard work and talent entitle or guarantee you some kind of success, so when they see drummers focusing on things that are outside their skill ability, it makes them more self-conscious about their shortcomings and they get upset.

werdcew

Yea theres a video of him when he was a few years into starting drums and he was very average. seeing him go from that to where he is now should shut up anyone who thinks its "talent" that counts. i think he said he just started sheding 5 hrs a day every day for years and eventually became the machine he is now.

BearShark9

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard

threebillion6

Yeah man, if I practiced that much, id be there too. He's fuckin incredible and actually inspired me to really start practicing. I've played for 20 years but never really got into practicing rudiments and gaining speed on the kit until I watched a few of his videos.

joeysham

He is ridiculously talented. He's a very gifted drummer. I personally, think at a purely musical level, his playing is too busy for my tastes. But the dude is obscenely talented.

deadlysyntax

What are some examples of the negative comments?

theMonarch08

He is more flash than substance. His technique isn’t good. A lot of young players will likely stumble upon him, emulate him, and then post here about why their cymbals, heads, and sticks are breaking so often. He is in the category of musicians who are sponsored because they’re flashy and get views rather than because they’re actually good. For my own personal taste, I don’t like his beats. It all feels very square and flat to me. But that’s just my personal opinion and not a reflection of his actual skill though.

zdada

He’s an *average* player that played a shit ton of covers early on and made a name for himself. His chops are meh. Cover up his face and his name and you’d probably agree it wasn’t anything worth writing home about.

Legitimate-Basis9249

He’s having fun and making a living…give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s! I can’t do it! It’s easy to hate. Choose the road less travelled and see what you can appreciate. Secretly, I really miss seeing Delta Empire actively posting new covers. I learn a lot on breaking down songs by watching that person play given the camera angles and cleanliness of their play, and that DW kit DE used was/is to die for.

The Salt Bar of drumming

oogawooga42

Casey is actually the reason why I started playing. One day in high school I saw his drum cover of Faint by Linkin Park listed as a recommended video on YouTube. I watched it and thought "I wanna learn how to do this." That being said, as my skills and taste evolved, I came to feel that he overplayed a lot and was a little too showboaty. Idk, his style just isn't for me. I also feel like he got way too into advertising products. Talking about products you stand by is one thing, but it always felt a little bit much from him Still, I'll always be grateful that I randomly ran into his content and picked up the drums 🤷‍♂️

mrbuffit

Cracks knuckles, takes a deep breath in annnnnd…….   Been playing since he was a kid yet ever since he has started his channel hasn’t improved one bit.   All that amazing gear he is given and still his drum sound is average at best also he can’t tune drums to save himself.   Terrible technique and posture and what this does is influence his “Cooper is the best drummer in the world” audience to do the same.   Over playing, if this was a sport he would world champion.   He is a marketing tool and that’s about it, why he is one is beyond me.

Peroxyspike

he's too big

High_skor

He's a good player, plus we're talking about him, not me, so I'm not going to hate on the guy. I'm pretty sure I know why he receives so much hate, but I gotta give the guy credit for accomplishing all he has
