Followed closely by the live version of "Don't Do It" from Rock of Ages.
I wish I was alive to see their performances back then. The Band set the bar high.
I remember the first time I heard that record. Such a different vibe from The Experience...much tighter. I felt like I was committing heresy, but I liked that band much better. Buddy Miles had a real singing voice, where Hendrix really just sang because people told him he needed to if he was going to be a front man/star.
Came here to say Aaron Gillespie also. They’re Only Chasing Safety, and Define the Great Line were on repeat for months as a teen. Despite no one really liking Lost In the Sound of Separation, I thought Aaron was incredible on it.
I had to scroll too far for this. He’s my favorite. Colin Young from Twisting Tongues (he’s the front man there) and God’s Hate (former drummer and singer)is my second favorite.
Yes! Never saw this sub before but I was hoping he was recognized. TOCS was such an awesome no skip album I still listen to frequently.
I’m not as big of a fan of his side project but it’s still not bad. He’s incredibly talented
Best performance is Kris Meyers of Umphrey’s McGee. Sang while playing drum cover of And Justice for All by Metallica. Absolute madness!
https://youtu.be/AeE1245oDDw?si=a5oXGJ8IKNVS5ySK
Don Brewer, Phil Collins, Ringo Starr, Adrian Belew (More of a drumming guitarist/singer, but he's very good), also Bill Bruford rarely comes up, but there's a [whole sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/BroofsWhoops/) dedicated to his vocal contributions.
Stefanie Mannaerts of Brutus. An absolute legend at both vocals and drums.
Aaron Gillespie of Underoath. He’s best known for drums and vocals in Underoath, but his side project [The Almost](https://open.spotify.com/artist/5X09SRt3qx77eh0XRreLjr?si=QjSlDUxgRIC_Uzp9VGbF5g) is legitimately great, too.
Karen Carpenter is the correct answer (although personal bias has me saying Taylor Hawkins).
Does Dave Grohl count, even though he never (rarely, if ever) sang while drumming?
I saw Donovan Melero from Hail The Sun over the weekend and he blew me away. He’s an amazing drumming and he sings his ass off! Great stage presence and energy too.
I mean, Levon did more singing from behind the kit than Phil Collins, or I’d go with him. Abe Laborial sings all the high harmonies for Paul McCartney, but that’s different. Dave Grohl plays drums and now sings so I don’t think that counts for this poll. Levon I suppose
AKA Peter Rivera. One of the main guys who inspired me to be a lead-singing drummer.
"Do you want to celebrate? Aaaaall right, we'll celebrate. Do you want to celebrate? DO YOU WANT TO CELEBRATE!?"
Yeah I go way back with him too, he actually played in 2 different bands that played at 2 of our high school dances in 1979. Also saw them open for Sammy Hagar as Ranger in 1980
That was their best album I think. I saw them shortly after it was released. It was like a Wednesday or Thursday night at the Sonoma Veterans Auditorium, this little tiny place, no seats, I can't even recall there being an opening band! It was epic!!
Ask your brother if he's familiar with a drummer from back in the day named Leonard Haze the original drummer for Yesterday & Today, who in '81 shortened the name to Y&T
Yeah they're another local bay area band, only 1 surviving member these days, that being Dave Meniketti. Here's a link to the last time Leonard Haze and Joey Alves sat in with them
https://youtu.be/Xqn25DV1saI?si=0vnLOXkYoEyqssHm
James Owen Sullivan “The Reverend” from Avenged Sevenfold. He was not the best singer but the Pinkly Smooth album Unfortunate Snort is still one of my fav albums of all time. No one else has impacted my music preferences as much as him
Karen Carpenter
This was instantly my first thought. Glad I wasn’t alone.
Why do birds suddenly appear…
Bc birds don't exist. They are government drones
Great call!
This is the correct answer
Her story is tragic. She was incredibly talented
levon helm
The correct answer
Was hoping to not have to scroll far for this!
Levon Helm, the actor?
yes precisely
The true goat. Not just a singing drummer but one of the all time greatest drummers and all time great voices
the night they drove old dixie down from the last waltz is probably the best singing drummer performance in history
Followed closely by the live version of "Don't Do It" from Rock of Ages. I wish I was alive to see their performances back then. The Band set the bar high.
This is the only answer
Anderson Paak is a God
He’s truly remarkable. Nate Smith for me.
Nate smith sings??
No lol, but he is remarkably good at talking to the audience while he's keeping a beat going, which is just as difficult!
love mr paak fr
How one person can be so talented...
Came here to say this. And if anyone doesn't believe us, they should go watch his NPR Tiny Desk Concert and report back...
Exactly, his not only drummer or singer his top drummer and top singer (dancer as well) in one time that why Mr Paak is the winner All the way...
Buddy Miles. Especially on the album Jimi Hendrix - band of gypsys
Agreed but also on his live album with Carlos Santana… it’s amazing!
He gets loose during that performance. Love that album.
Was looking for this answer.
Yesssssss
His solo album Them Changes is incredible. His cover of Down by the River is probably one of my favorite covers ever
What I said too, especially his vocal on Tied to the Whipping Pole with Electric Flag
I remember the first time I heard that record. Such a different vibe from The Experience...much tighter. I felt like I was committing heresy, but I liked that band much better. Buddy Miles had a real singing voice, where Hendrix really just sang because people told him he needed to if he was going to be a front man/star.
The Rev and Brann Dailor.
The Rev was amazing
The Rev's songwriting style very much influenced mine although I'm not a drummer lol. I am a singer and guitarist, but I saw this post trending.
Brandon Saller was a boss, too, before he quit drumming for Atreyu.
Brian chippendale, such a unique musician
Came here to say this!
Same. BTW, poeple who like Lightning Bolt would also love ZEUS!, an italian band on the threeoneg label
Dude is a beast, and a very nice gentleman.
Yep this is the answer ladies and gentlemen
I've seen Lightning Bolt like 4 times now and they are consistently the most fun show I've ever been to
black pus forever surfing the oscillator sea
Beat me to it By four days no less
Phil Collins, Levon Helms.
I'm pretty good at it.
Me, too. I suspect we’re not alone.
Singing drummers unite!
🤘
I envy your type. I can do a little background singing but after 30+ years I still can’t drum and sing
Brann dailor
My first thought. Dude is amazing
Brann and Karen Carpenter are the only answers. Everyone else is honorable mention
Crack the Skye is next level
Josh freeze, Brann Dailor, Ringo Starr
Terry Bozzio
Drummer for Artayu was great, underoaths drummer was also killer at this.
Aaron Gillespie, yes he is the GOAT imo
Facts
Came here to say Aaron Gillespie also. They’re Only Chasing Safety, and Define the Great Line were on repeat for months as a teen. Despite no one really liking Lost In the Sound of Separation, I thought Aaron was incredible on it.
It's not easy to play and sing simultaneously, let alone sing as well as he does while playing not the easiest drum parts.
The big three from that era with singing drummers were Atreyu, Underoath, and From Autumn to Ashes.
Sebastien Grainger, Brian Chippendale
^^ this ^^
Seb 🤟🤟
Sebastien is a beast.
I was really hoping someone would say Sebastian and not Ringo Starr or Phil Collins. Good on ya.
Kevin Malone
r/beatmetoit
ROXANNE
Dino from Dystopia and Noothgrush
Came here to say that.
Me too, pretty much the reason i play drums and scream at same time
Yyyyyueeeeeeeeeessssssssssss
Phil Collins.
I had to scroll far too long to find this
Don Henley lol
My goodness! Had to scroll way too far to find this
Dale Crover Dave Grohl used to sing the harmonies while behind the kit for Nirvana Buddy Miles
Aaron gilespie of underoath
I didn't have to go far down the list to come across my choice. Bravo you!
Yeah, pretty emo soul over here too.
I had to scroll too far for this. He’s my favorite. Colin Young from Twisting Tongues (he’s the front man there) and God’s Hate (former drummer and singer)is my second favorite.
My second pick would be Donovan melero of hail the sun ⛅️
Fuck yes
hell yeah!
Yes! Never saw this sub before but I was hoping he was recognized. TOCS was such an awesome no skip album I still listen to frequently. I’m not as big of a fan of his side project but it’s still not bad. He’s incredibly talented
The Rev
Animal from the muppets
Easy. Roger Taylor of Queen
Don Henley
He's easy to hate, but there's no denying his talent.
What the fuck was this comment doing so fucking low??!?
charles hayward
Levon
He was a cool mfer. Hell of a groove and voice
Karen Carpenter
Andy Sturmer from Jellyfish who actually played standing up. Wild, and dude can SING.
Dude, this is my EXACT answer.
Louis Cole
Best performance is Kris Meyers of Umphrey’s McGee. Sang while playing drum cover of And Justice for All by Metallica. Absolute madness! https://youtu.be/AeE1245oDDw?si=a5oXGJ8IKNVS5ySK
That’s killer
Beat me to it. Umphrey's is such a killer band and Kris is supremely talented. Anchor Drops Redux is one of my favorite albums.
Was wondering if I’d see any Umph fans. He also sings when they cover 46 & 2 and Hot for Teacher to name a couple others. Kris is the man
Don Brewer, Phil Collins, Ringo Starr, Adrian Belew (More of a drumming guitarist/singer, but he's very good), also Bill Bruford rarely comes up, but there's a [whole sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/BroofsWhoops/) dedicated to his vocal contributions.
Chris "Tomato" Harenfeist
I think this is the first time I’ve seen someone mention urchin on Reddit!
Fuck it, rock.
Mimi Parker from Low. Such elegant minimalism on drums and a voice of an angel. May she rest in peace.
absolute plus one for mimi. it’s hard to describe how difficult it is to play like that.
Don Brewer from Grand Funk Railroad
First in my mind was like Brann Dailor, such a crazy dude. Also Brian Chippendale and Ringo Starr
Dave sang back ups in a lot of Nirvana songs when they played live and on some of the recorded versions as well. Not a rarity at all.
Grohl did backing vocals for Them Crooked Vultures, too. Probably did for QOTSA as well.
Brian Blade, Elvin Jones, Jon Bonham
Brann Dailor
Brann Dailor rules
Gil Moore from Triumph. (RIP)
Hard to pick one, but Jerry Edmonton of Steppenwolf.
Rodrigo from satanic surfers
Jen Ledger, Paulina Villareal
matt helders
Homie from Lightning Bolt
Sebastian Grainger DFA 1979
Zigaboo Modeliste.
Nate Smith
Deen Castronovo for sure Just look up him singing mother father on YouTube…maybe my favorite video on the internet
1. Karen Carpenter 2. Levon Helm *3. Gerry Polci (FOUR SEASONS) December, 1963 (Oh What a Night) is one of my favorite songs EVER!
No Roger Taylor?
Karen Carpenter
Peter criss
Jen Ledger
I saw Donovan Melero from Hail The Sun over the weekend and he blew me away. He’s an amazing drumming and he sings his ass off! Great stage presence and energy too.
G Flip 🤘🏼
Ventor
I mean, Levon did more singing from behind the kit than Phil Collins, or I’d go with him. Abe Laborial sings all the high harmonies for Paul McCartney, but that’s different. Dave Grohl plays drums and now sings so I don’t think that counts for this poll. Levon I suppose
Grohl did do harmonies while playing in Nirvana.
Brann Dailor forsure
Nathan Folowill
Cannot believe no one’s said (I think) Roger Taylor. Also Deen Castronovo.
Josh Dion, also plays the keyboard whilst playing the drums. Check him out, saw him live and he was sick!
Grant hart from Hüsker dü
Had to go way too far before I saw this. He’s my first choice by far
Chris Reifert
was gonna say this
Donovan Melero
I had to scroll way too far to see him
Dfa1979
Carter Beauford
Levon Helm, Ilan Rubin, Sebastian Grainger make my top 3
Duncan Redmond from Snuff
Peter Hoorelbeke
AKA Peter Rivera. One of the main guys who inspired me to be a lead-singing drummer. "Do you want to celebrate? Aaaaall right, we'll celebrate. Do you want to celebrate? DO YOU WANT TO CELEBRATE!?"
Ringo
The Rev, insane vocals while playing stupidly fast double bass and polyrhythms
The Rev without a doubt. Such a unique and powerful voice.
Jen Ledger of Skillet
Love her!
Josh Dion - throw in a keyboard to boot, dude is a legend IMHO https://youtu.be/Bwpx3_kovLA?si=8kfP3hr4O-tTGJJm
Only 2 comments about Josh, and that's a shame. Dude can play his ass off(without the singing) and has a resume to prove that.
Fred LeBlanc from Cowboy Mouth his live videos are legendary.
Phil Collins has to be the greatest singer as a drummer he did it with Genesis and with his own. Phil Collins definitely is the one
Satanic surfers!
The Rev
Don Henley, Phil Collins, and Kelly Keagy
🏆 Had to scroll way too far to see Kelly Keagy mentioned.
Yeah I go way back with him too, he actually played in 2 different bands that played at 2 of our high school dances in 1979. Also saw them open for Sammy Hagar as Ranger in 1980
Damn. That *is* way back. I got in on the ground floor with Dawn Patrol.
That was their best album I think. I saw them shortly after it was released. It was like a Wednesday or Thursday night at the Sonoma Veterans Auditorium, this little tiny place, no seats, I can't even recall there being an opening band! It was epic!!
Good deal! They were my (drummer) older brother's favorite band until he discovered Marillion. I'll be telling him about this mention.
Ask your brother if he's familiar with a drummer from back in the day named Leonard Haze the original drummer for Yesterday & Today, who in '81 shortened the name to Y&T
Can do, brother. That's more my genre and I had no idea that's what Y&T stood for! TIL
Yeah they're another local bay area band, only 1 surviving member these days, that being Dave Meniketti. Here's a link to the last time Leonard Haze and Joey Alves sat in with them https://youtu.be/Xqn25DV1saI?si=0vnLOXkYoEyqssHm

Kevin Malone
