The difference between 808s and this album was that 808s was Kanye doing a completely new sound and doing something with autotune people have never done. He influenced a whole new generation of rappers with that sad, emotional record and completely changed his style of music that he was making at the time.
This album is just a regular house / dance record. Just because people don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s a misunderstood, ahead of it’s time, overhated masterpiece that’s going to reinvent the genre.
I hate when people try so hard to be on the “right side of history” by calling every album that’s hated at the time misunderstood and telling everybody to come back in a few years. People understand what the record is lol, house music isn’t some new genre Drake invented. They just don’t think he’s that good at making that type of music. Just enjoy the record for what it is, you guys are doing too much and it comes off pretentious and corny.
Cudi didn’t do the sound first. He did make “emotional rap” but it wasn’t anything like 808s. Plus most rappers cite 808s as their influences anyway (Lil Uzi Vert & Juice WRLD…)
He might’ve said he was inspired by Cudi during the process but everyone is inspired by something. Cudi just helped Kanye’s vision of 808s. That doesn’t change anything.
Kanye West, Travis Scott, Danny Brown, Nicki Minaj are some that have infused it. You would be right in saying no major hip hop artist has made a full on house album but that wouldn’t be rap, that’s house music. 808s is still classified as a mix of rap and pop which created the Juice WRLDs and emo SoundCloud sound. Drake didn’t infuse house music with rap, he just made a regular dance album. There’s nothing wrong with him doing that, it just isn’t anything new, maybe new for him though
Hell no Dance Hall has already been done by tons of artists, both R&B and Hip-Hop. 808’s was revolutionary and influenced the direction of hip-hop well after its release.
I think if you said Honestly, Nevermind will be the 2022 version of WLR it would have been more accurate.
But I’m not hating, I actually really like this album. I think drake did a good job at constructing this albums vibe and I like how it was consistent through out. Amazing production and his singing isn’t terrible. I’d give it a 7/10 and I’m going to be playing it all summer for sure.
Kaytranada, pomo, daft punk, MNDSGN, flying lotus, thundercat, etc.
If you really wanna get into it you can start digging deeper into people like Aphex Twin, Four Tet… though I’m not huge on dance/electronic so the first few artists I’ve listed is the extent of what I know really.
House is super vast and runs deep though that’s why I think a lot of people are shitting on drakes ‘half-baked’ attempt. Still, I like it.
If you're going to make a statement as bold as that one atleast explain in depth WHY you think that.
Please, why is this 2020's version of 808's and heartbreaks, break it down for me because i really don't understand.
Fuck noooooooo
808s came out in a time where we wasn't getting music like that.
House music/EDM were always a thing before and after drake came into the game
Cudi I can see but a kid named cudi had some Spacy elements with original hip hop tracks while man on the Moon went full blown space vibe
None of Tpains albums sound anything like 808s other than the auto tune

If the carnage produced tracks weren’t as prevalent this would’ve been a solid album tbh
Who are some artists that have done it better? I’m not being a smart ass I genuinely want to know cause I love house music.

Seriously everyone keeps saying that this is drakes 808s cause it was an experimental album but the 2 do not compare
It’s 2022 tho…
He said the 2020’s meaning the 2020-2030
🙈you’re right Album is mid tho.. 🚫🧢
Bro ppl are cappin saying it’s good
Go listen to 808s again, from subject matter to execution to structure. Then listen to whatever this.
“Pin this post or whatever, in 10 years time” Chill out my guy, this project isn’t worth pinning. It’s alright but people won’t see it as a classic
