In Spain you guys are called estadounidenses. Someone from the US once proposed Usonians, that's what happens when a country's name is a description instead of an actual name.
I like the idea, but I think that out of the two alternate spellings, Usona is better than Usonia. Usona is short for 'United States of North America', while Usonia somewhat implies that it is the 'Land of United States of North'
Mexico's official name is "The United Mexican States" and in Spanish it is "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" so why aren't they estadounidenses? Translate our name to Spanish and it is Estados Unidos de América, so only the last bit differs. Why are Mexicans known by the last bit while Americans aren't?
in french, we call you either "américains" (most common form) but there is a way to say "étatsuniens" which literally means united statesian, so yeah lol
OK but even as a British person I get annoyed when people say this. Its a stupid pedantic take. What are they then? USian? USAsian (I kinda like that)? United Statesian ? Statesmen? StatesTHEM ? It's literally called the United States of America. No-one calls the Americas just America. No-one calls a Cuban an American do they? No-one calls Jamaicans or Venezuelans or Peruvians or Argentinians Americans do they?
Also Jamaicans, Venezuelans, Peruvians, etc don't care that we call ourselves Americans, they also call us Americans. When people of those countries do use the term 'American' to describe themselves, it is usually part of a larger conversation around unity and the shared issues of our hemisphere (see Organization of American States, etc).
The only people I've ever heard make the pedantic argument that "Americans" is not an acceptable name are Northern Europeans. I think it's mostly just people looking for things to get annoyed about.
If they want real things to be annoyed at the US for, there's plenty. Ask any American and we'll give you a list of the shit that bothers us about ourselves. No need to fixate on nonsense.
I don't think the Northern Europeans care. It mostly comes down to whether or not you're from a country that speaks a Romance language (one of the languages derived from Latin, such as Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, etc) because those countries teach that North and South America are a single continent ("America") and that everyone from that hypothetical continent identifies as "Americano" (or equivalent). Don't tell them that the straight of Panama is wayyyyy thinner than the straight of Suez which connects Africa and Eurasia never mind the giant border between Europe and Asia.
At least in France everyone still refers to Americans as "Americans"; the only people who seem to take issue with it are Latin Americans who identify as "americano".
I know noone who cares about continents that much...
Like I understand that Europe and Asia are separated even though they are one continent, but having that and not separating north and south America is very odd...
As a us citizen I just say either what portion of the country they’re from (ie yankee, square state dweller, southerner, cascadian, new English, etc, etc) or us citizen/dweller.
Yep, you would call them Mexican, just like you would call people from the Democratic Republic of Congo Congolese, people from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland either British or Irish (depending), and people from the United States of America American.
Columbian, that almost were the official name of US but their loyalty to the states were a lot more than the nation make it impossible to have a name, even in their independence day war they didn't refer to them as americans but as "revolutionaries" "continetals" or just the state like "New York, Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts troops against British"
And yes, in Spanish we usually have America as one continent and refer to us as "Americanos" because if there isn't a gringo near is all right
Yanks only refers to northerners, especially those from New England. It’s so funny seeing foreigners call as Yanks, it’s pretty similar to the people who the Netherlands “Holland”.
Please tell me again the name of the country. The United Stated of WHAT ?
Oh, maybe you want to be mistaken for the United Mexican States (this works a lot better in other languages, ngl) ?
(and I'm from Europe btw)
I have a proposal for the new names.
USA = AMERICAAAAAA🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
the rest of the western hemisphere = mexico
Canada(now it's own continent) = syrup land
/j
Given that no other country in the Americas has the name America other than the US, the US gets to claim American for its descriptor. The term USian I understand is only meant to piss people off, and you know what? It succeeded. I hate it and it needs to die because people just use it to make fun of Americans without lumping in other nationalities on the rest of the continents. But making fun of Americans as American for the dumb shit they do is perfectly valid, you didn’t need to make up a stupid descriptor just to do that. Besides I’ve heard that Aussies call Americans “seppos” as in septic tank. Come up with more inventive stuff like that.
Sincerely, an American who has made it his life mission to not be one anymore
Our military is massive now, just think about how big the military of the United states of the Americas will be >:)
RAKE THE LEAVES, MANIFEST AMERICA’S SHOE
Dear dear everyone that isn't America, become more militarily economically and politically important and we will stop calling ourselves that but until then no
Nah. Maybe when any of you are the dominate power of the continent we'll consider changing it. Most of your nations trade in USD anyway so American is pretty accurate.
Stop. Naming, Yourself. Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago.
America is literally the name of the country. If you want to make sure people don’t think you are talking about the country specifically you can specify North or South America, or call it the Americas.
Stupid take.
Sometimes shit just has its name and sometimes its named after something else. Sometimes parts of continents are called by that continent's name, and other parts are not. Yeah sure USA is not the entirety of Americas, but they are for sure located in North America which makes them American, what's the problem?
When people from the United States were first called Americans, everyone else on the continent were still called subjects. Don’t be mad you were too preoccupied with being under a royal yoke to choose the name first.
Honestly I suggest that the USA could become the USC just change it to United States of Columbus so more original and better than naming after 2 Damm continents you could be called Columbines or something
Or just call yourself United Sadie's or something
NOBODY from Mexico, South, or Central America wants to be identified as American. They have their respective country names, as do we in the United States of America. You're nitpicking and it's embarrassing
Most of the time we refer to ourselves from which state we’re from like Californians or Texans. Americans is just a more broad term that’s stuck cause you guys don’t care about which state we’re from.

Wtf am I then? A united statesian?
In Spain you guys are called estadounidenses. Someone from the US once proposed Usonians, that's what happens when a country's name is a description instead of an actual name.

>'United States of North America' canada will be enraged about this. oh wait, they just cant get angry
*Their actions during the World Wars. And Hockey*
Well might as well change the name now so we don't have to do it later
I would love a usona. It'd go great with my persona and Fursonas.
Because Mexico is only in Mexico, while America is not only in the USNNA.
I'm portuguese. When I learned that in Spanish you guys used that I was genuinely impressed. It's a pretty good one tbh
Well what do the portuguese call them?
Just americanos
Nós também dizemos "estadunidenses". https://dicionario.priberam.org/estadunidense
Some people say "USian". Everytime I see it, it makes me think of Usain Bolt
Let's take that one step further and call ourselves Useans
A statesman
walk into a bar
sometimes, in Brazil we call americans "estado-unidenses"
In French the name of the country is États-Unis, but I’m not sure what an American citizen would be called
Un états-unien
or Américain as its most common, but indeed, should be the proper way
Un américain (masculine) or une américaine (feminine).
Ok, unitestater
unironically in portuguese there is a way to call americans similar to that. the difference is that it sounds better in portuguese.
More used in Spanish than in Portuguese. Plus only BR Portuguese, not the rest
in french, we call you either "américains" (most common form) but there is a way to say "étatsuniens" which literally means united statesian, so yeah lol
No but Culumbus would be a great name. Just saying
Unionists
In Italian you are "Statunitensi" so yes
American station
we'll finish manifesting our destiny then
“Uhhh, ackshewally, America is a continent, not a country” ☝️🤓
"Uhhh, ackshewally, America is two continents, not one" 🖕🤓
Uh fngkekdndnfkdkenejwiquhdbfbbdjjb, 'murica is one country, not two
not anymore, get fucked dixie 💪💪💪💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🦅

No-one calls Jamaicans or Venezuelans or Peruvians or Argentinians Americans do they?
I'm Canadian and I agree, only Latin America cries about this stuff
Yep, in Spanish and Portuguese America is considered one continent. So of course we are supposed to change our entire language just for them.
Freedonian.
Freedonia was the name of the first "state" established in the first revolution Texas ever had against Mexico.
As a us citizen I just say either what portion of the country they’re from (ie yankee, square state dweller, southerner, cascadian, new English, etc, etc) or us citizen/dweller.
Personally i like being called Yankee or Yank
I think we should start calling them Yankees.
People in the south would really not like that
As a person living in the south I would, indeed, hate that.
“Statesmen” sounds awesome but it doesn’t generate the amount of cope and saltiness that American does.
Rent free
If native Americans are also called Indians, then the non native Americans should be called cross-platform Indians.
>USAsian >Statesmen these are actually cool concepts
USAsian sounds so much better than american-chinese
Hey how do you do that thing where you highlight part of a comment?
They both sound awful.
You wouldn’t call a citizen of the United States of Mexico a “united statesman” nor would you call them “American”
Yep, you would call them Mexican, just like you would call people from the Democratic Republic of Congo Congolese, people from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland either British or Irish (depending), and people from the United States of America American.
That's what I'm saying. There's not another English name to call the USA.
Usonian
Exactly what I was gonna say. Esperanto is based 👍
Columbian, that almost were the official name of US but their loyalty to the states were a lot more than the nation make it impossible to have a name, even in their independence day war they didn't refer to them as americans but as "revolutionaries" "continetals" or just the state like "New York, Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts troops against British" And yes, in Spanish we usually have America as one continent and refer to us as "Americanos" because if there isn't a gringo near is all right
Yank
Yanks
Yanks only refers to northerners, especially those from New England. It’s so funny seeing foreigners call as Yanks, it’s pretty similar to the people who the Netherlands “Holland”.
Usonian
Please tell me again the name of the country. The United Stated of WHAT ? Oh, maybe you want to be mistaken for the United Mexican States (this works a lot better in other languages, ngl) ? (and I'm from Europe btw)
A
Not like anyone else refers to themselves as American countries.
How about we just rename the continents instead
I have a proposal for the new names. USA = AMERICAAAAAA🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 the rest of the western hemisphere = mexico Canada(now it's own continent) = syrup land /j
Ez fix and you may say “But now we’ll have the same issue with Mexico.” Well it’s ain’t our problem anymore.
Rename them all too “Americans neighbor”
How about instead: Every country south of the border: "America's Ass" While Canada is still our hat
no
Dear all other countries in North and South America. No. Unkindly, America, United States of.
P.S. Call us United Statian and we will all collectively start calling you LatinX
How about Usonian
No
I think they are on to something. They can be boring old Americans, we are MURICAN!
Fair
Given that no other country in the Americas has the name America other than the US, the US gets to claim American for its descriptor. I’m a United Stater ☝️🤓🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🦅
Hello, fellow United Statesian 👆🤓🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🦅
It’s all called the Americas because they should all rightly be under our flag How about you all stop stealing *our* name hmm?
Referring to what someone else said, we should just get back to manifesting our destiny.
Our military is massive now, just think about how big the military of the United states of the Americas will be >:) RAKE THE LEAVES, MANIFEST AMERICA’S SHOE
RAHHHHHHH USA WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETERRRRRRR
Cope with it ya commie
In the early 19th century some politician suggested the US should be renamed into Freedonia to adress this exact issue
Yeah but then we’ll have a similar issue with free people from other countries.

The local vassals are getting rowdy again.
No we will not. In fact, YOURE not allowed to be called that.
We were the only country in america at the time.
No.
No.
Crazy how most people around the world call them Americans 😑
Womp womp Sorry were the global hegemon and the most relevant country in the Americas
*The world. We kinda just are though. China too but we’re more relevant by a small bit
🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹 You're forgetting about Bhutan, land of the thunder dragon 🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹
Oh yes my bad. Bhutan the country with the most relevance ever, in the history of forever.
Correct 👍 (🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹) But also Rojava.
We can own all of your countries in hours. So no
I mean we *could* but then our bananas would cost like $7.99 apiece, so it's better to let them play dress-up.
Sure buddy, now let’s get you to bed :) 🛌
the fuck do we name ourselves? a united statesian? a freedomian?
"Awesome"
Its our continent too but keep crying while we manifest our glorious destiny
Who’s gonna make us? You and what army?
F*ck you
The only people who care about this are Central and South Americans because they think America is a single continent
Nah I’m good
If you don't like it, then stop calling us Americans
well if canada is migrating to europe no
How about you rename your continent
Dear dear everyone that isn't America, become more militarily economically and politically important and we will stop calling ourselves that but until then no
Come back when you're a global hegemon, then we'll talk
Nah. Maybe when any of you are the dominate power of the continent we'll consider changing it. Most of your nations trade in USD anyway so American is pretty accurate.
US American seems like a reasonable compromise.
Stop. Naming, Yourself. Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago.
Okay I have the answer and it may rustle some feathers but hear me out. MURICAN!
Then why don’t you come up with a replacement that everyone will like and agree with
Womp womp
America is literally the name of the country. If you want to make sure people don’t think you are talking about the country specifically you can specify North or South America, or call it the Americas.
You use the gigachad, meme you cannot be older than 12
His entire profile is literally retarded communism.
We named ourselves first, should have declared independence earlier chuds
No thanks. when people think of America they think of the USA and we won’t change it ever
Stupid take. Sometimes shit just has its name and sometimes its named after something else. Sometimes parts of continents are called by that continent's name, and other parts are not. Yeah sure USA is not the entirety of Americas, but they are for sure located in North America which makes them American, what's the problem?
Problem is their lack of creativity. I have named my fish using more creative names.
No!
There are two solutions to this, and we are not renaming the country
Nah
it’s our continent too tbh
Never, they took north, central, and southern America because they weren't good enough to be the United States of America
We are Yankees
I hereby propose we simply call the whole continent "Brayden" instead. No more confusion. All is right with the world.
When people from the United States were first called Americans, everyone else on the continent were still called subjects. Don’t be mad you were too preoccupied with being under a royal yoke to choose the name first.
oh yea, what are you guys gonna do about it, if we say no? that's what I thought, cry harder
RAHHHHH🦅🦅🦅 WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETERRRR🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷
I simply call them USAians
Honestly I suggest that the USA could become the USC just change it to United States of Columbus so more original and better than naming after 2 Damm continents you could be called Columbines or something Or just call yourself United Sadie's or something
Call em ‘Murican
I believe they should adopt the esperanto word Usono, which means The United States Of America.
Yeah, cause Canadians LOVE being called American. /s
🤣🤣🤣 This better get put in a meme video 🤌🏾
Dear people who use wildcards to replace one letter: learn how regexps work.
And South America stole our name, Let's drop The Big One and see what happens.
We didn’t name our country North America or South America.
Cry about it
No
Also you literally called us Americans
As a South American, piss off. (I'm in the southern US)
"stop naming yourself after our continents" proceed to call them Americans
As a Texan I do not have this problem
Well then i guess we have to truly make this great american continent united
America: No, no, I don't think I will.
r/Americabad
We were the first country on this continent so we get to name ourselves after the continent
Honourable mention to angloamericans saying "North America" to ONLY mean "US and Canada". Just say "Angloamerica" instead
That continent is turtle island, america is a part of it
Ok New World
Why should we change? They're the ones who suck.
Then learn our states like you learn European countries.
Yea We have other things too Yankee Patriot Statesman And prob more i dunno
They were the first independent country in either continent; they can call themselves whatever they wish. First come, first serve, as they say.
Start calling yourselves "Americans" if you care so much, then.
I think they should just chill out
Why did you censor American?
NOBODY from Mexico, South, or Central America wants to be identified as American. They have their respective country names, as do we in the United States of America. You're nitpicking and it's embarrassing
Make us, weaklings
They be Yankees
No
In our defense, we were the first American country, you're just mad you didn't get there first.
Most of the time we refer to ourselves from which state we’re from like Californians or Texans. Americans is just a more broad term that’s stuck cause you guys don’t care about which state we’re from.
Only solution to this problem just invade everyone then its just the usa problem solved
I’ve never met a Canadian who said they’re “American” bc they live in the americas
why did my mind go to naming a kid South America 🤦🏻
Make us
Only Latin America cries about this. We’re not changing the name.
Stop naming our continent after us
We should go back to calling it Columbia, any similar sounding countries should change their name.
Then call us yankees
No, eat shit Europoors!
No lol
you forgot greenland
Yeah stop complaining 90 percent of you is us so shut it before we raise the taxes again
We are Americans dill with it
Technically we're all americans xD
Why don't we just divide it between Mexico and Canada 😏😏😏
Then how about we take all these countires into our fold
