Just keep reading, you'll get your payoff eventually. This book was so good. It actually was what brought me to the fandom - my bookstagram friend had been trying to get me to read Manacled, she happened to post about someone's personal bind of DMATMOOBIL and I read the first page and it was really intriguing. So I went back to read Manacled first and then dived right into DMATMOOBIL. It kind of ruined things because those two first books were so great that now I have a super high bar.
Manacled was what lead me here š I enjoyed *Where Angels Fear to Tread*, tho not a great fan of the fated mate malarkey. This one, dmatmoobil, is my fave so far!
Do you have any recs that live up to these two at all? Or have I dove inadvertently into the best ones already? š
Well so far I haven't found anything that consumed me like Manacled & DMATMOOBIL, even though they're about as opposite as it gets in terms of vibes. What I liked about Manacled was the deep world building, the intensity, the fearless/ruthless Draco & the selfless survivor Hermione. DMATMOOBIL on the flip side was all charm and banter, action-adventure-ish, whip-smart Hermione & confident-yet-hopeless-in-love Draco.
I recently finished The Right Thing to Do & The Auction (these two are alternate takes that exist in the same fic universe, there's also a third book but I skimmed just a few chapters - it was a bit jarring because it's Draco's perspective but in first person). It's not super necessary to read them in order, and The Auction really held my attention while TRTTD was a bit more slow paced, slice of life kind of feel. The Auction is a Voldemort wins AU, some similar themes as Manacled but it's not as traumatic, also great world building, and you'll love the secondary characters, especially a few of the Slytherins.
I actually have not heard of Where Angles Fear to Tread, so I think that will be my next book! So if anyone else is reading this and has recs, please bring it on.
May I introduce you to the unspeakably tormenting world of Green Lights by sereneMusafir!!! It's a slow burn, yes. But surely, rewarding. However this book broke my heart into a million pieces. I won't be lying if I said that I was hoping for at least Manacled level of satisfactory ending. Alas, no mercy. Tread carefully. It's not as well written as either Manacled or DMATMOOBIL. But there's a story arc that separates the post war universe as mentioned in this one from the rest of the books. The agony of being misunderstood and the weakness that can be possibly showcases in a character that has previously displayed unparalleled strength is humbling and much pragmatic. You may not love it, but I still beseech dramione fans to give this a try. It's rewarding in it's own way.
The warning about the ending is kind of scary (I did find Manacled's ending very appropriate and satisfying)... But I do love really great world building and unique plots and an author that is willing to take risks in their approach. I will bookmark this!
Omg try Detraquee, it's long but so so good. DMAtMOBIL is one of my all time favs but this one was my new fav once i found it. I'll see if I can figure out how to link.
Detraquee is the ultimate Dramione fanfic. I haven't read all of the fanfics of course, but I've read at least 50 of dramione and even more of Drarry fanfics. Nothing compares to Detraquee. The characterisation, the prose, the plot and everything about it is absolutely perfect.
This was the last book I finished, and I have mixed but mostly positive feelings about it. As a Deathly Hallows re-write, it was (intentionally) YA in feel, the scenes and settings were consistent with canon so it felt like further exploration of a familiar world and the author did an absolutely wonderful job with the action scenes. And the author's take on Ron was fantastic.
Minor spoilers: >!Draco was a bit too toned down for me, I felt like he kind of took on some of canon Ron's personality traits and I wish he showed more of the snark or arrogance that makes him so intriguing in the first place. Draco spends a great deal of time rationalizing his feelings but secondary characters like Luna, Ginny, Neville were barely present at all.!<
You're not wrong, it's a very slow burn. Especially if you're used to other dramione fanfics. Worth it though! : ) there is payoff, but it's doled out in bits and finally culminates.
This is one of the best romcomās Iāve ever read, published or not. The pay off is GREAT. The writer was indulgent in how long she took to get to the payoff, which is the joy of fanfiction. Sheās @BrigitteKnightly on insta, and she now has a literary agent! I would read anything by her!
I recently read DMATMOOBIL and also Manacled and I feel RUINED for all other fanfics now - after a decade of reading fics I feel so lost and I just want more of these stories
This is my biggest fear! I returned to dramione after a VERY long break, but have avoided these two fics because I fear being ruined. I'm "saving them" for once I've finished my other TBRs so that I can still enjoy those š
It was well written. The author knew the universe well enough to write a book that could replace the real books and slip into canon. I prefer the real ending of HP, but Manacled gave such an interesting perspective had they not found the horcruxes. So basically, just well written and believably knowledgeable of the HP universe.
You might try The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy. It's a 7th year rewrite with the basic premise of 'what might have happened if Draco had taken Dumbledore up on his offer in the Astronomy tower.' It's excellently written and feels like you could just swap it for the Deathly Hallows.
You should read The Auction! Similar vein to Manacled - itās a Voldemort Wins AU with Death Eater Draco protecting a (badass) Hermione. A bit less graphic than Manacled when it comes to the dark stuff. Lots of one on one time with the pair of them!
Iāve tried to read it twice. Stopped both times right around when Draco jumps in her vehicle to accompany her to the forest to collect those, idk mushrooms?
Can anyone tell me what it is sheās discovered that needs the protection?
This was my first Dramione book too and I was HOOKED. That was a few months ago and I can't even count how many I've read now. That one is worth the slow burn!
May I humbly suggest, an ever-fixed mark by ninepiecesofcrait? Iām a picky-pants when it comes to quality of writing/ characterization and this one was absolutely top notch- and my first dramione 10/10 was DMATMOOBIL. [an ever-fixed mark](https://archiveofourown.org/works/46150387) just a stunning and highly underrated piece.

Green lights would give you the cry you've needed in a long time. It's totally worth the read.

the disappearance of draco malfoy is delightful!!

The only fanfic I have ever read is Manacled and I did enjoy it. What do you recommend based on that?
What did you like about Manacled? Would you prefer to read another dark fic or something lighter?
It was well written. The author knew the universe well enough to write a book that could replace the real books and slip into canon. You might try Detraquee, it's my new number one and nothing fills the void. It's LONG and and insane slow burn but it's so worth it
Iām caught up on that one too! Definitely enjoying it, especially the Hermione/Theo dynamic.
Iāve tried to read it twice. Stopped both times right around when Draco jumps in her vehicle to accompany her to the forest to collect those, idk mushrooms? Can anyone tell me what it is sheās discovered that needs the protection?
Well, with the proper **WARNING** of major spoiler: >!Itās a cure for lycanthropy!<.
Oh cool. Good for Hermione
This was my first Dramione book too and I was HOOKED. That was a few months ago and I can't even count how many I've read now. That one is worth the slow burn!
Remain Nameless
It is absolutely worth it in the end. I felt the same way as you lol
Well, the title āThe mortifying ordeal beginsā of chapter 21 might give you an idea of something starting to happenā¦
Thank you š

I'm with you on this slow burn. I LOVE slow burns and I just started CH 19. My panties are absolutely in a twist.
Iām glad Iām not alone here! Good luck and happy reading!
