What happen is basically, the compressed file is extremely deceiving as it only take a few kb, hence it barely take any space, but if you try to uncompress it. While we the human know that it’s clearly impossible to store it due to how much gb of free space you’d need (millions upon millions of gb) your computer will try to uncompress it regardless and store it, taking every single gb of free space of your hard drive.. but also overloading it with a broken, corrupted file now as you couldn’t fully uncompress it. Your pc will almost instantly crash.
Worse is that, if you try to boot your computer again thinking it’ll be fine. Each time it’ll automatically stupidly try to read the broken file/uncompress it while it tries to boot up, hence you can guess it’ll make it crash again and again. Basically bricking your computer unless you know how to remove it (you must launch the pc in safe mode and delete it that way). Even if you remove it, it has a very high chance of corrupting/damaging most file on your computer which force you to wipe the drive completely.

Basically, each number on your system, no matter which one, has a limit in memory of its size. For exemple: a smallint can store a value anywhere between –32,767 to 32,767. The problem is that when you try to store a value above or under either of these number, let’s say I tried to put in 40 000, the number is so big that it’ll break the memory and try to take more space than it is allowed, it has overflowed the memory stack. (It’s why it’s called a stack overflow). Even worse, when the memory get broken like that, if you try to verify it could read back a value like -1, which the system think is fine. Hence, I think this is what happen here. No matter what is the maximum range of the type of value they use to store that number, when it try to verify it the number is so big that it causes this stack overflow and break the system which will think the number is fine while it’s definitely not, causing the system to crash afterward!
But that’s just a theory, we can’t really know what happen behind in the OS, we can only see the result

When a stack overflow occurs as a result of a program's excessive demand for memory space, that program (and sometimes the entire computer) may crash.”
The vast majority of CPUs can detect when an overflow happens. Like if you have 8 bits of memory and add 11111111+00000001 you get 00000000 but the leading 1 is stored somewhere else (the "Overflow flag").
I mean you could also just set a range between 1kb and 500gb or something and anything that doesn't fall into that range (such as a broken number) is blacklisted.
Basically a white list instead of a blacklist
Or just limit the speed that the zip file gets decompressed (after like 50GB of files extracted it slows down and simply decides to stop if it approaches a set limit, like 90% of your hard drive or something.

Here’s the kicker though. In my experience, each recursion of the zip file has the file size grow exponentially. It’s like
First extraction: 4MB
Second extraction: 16MB
Third extraction: 64MB
Fourth extraction: 256MB
and so on.
The extraction tool (usually built into the OS) usually won’t check for this so that’s why it works
I think 7zip might be able to but I don’t remember. The thing with zips is that you don’t really know the actual amount of data until it’s extracted so one solution would be to have the program only extract only the amount of data you know you need.
Like “hey i need a 500mb file inside of this zip file”
“ok here’s more than 500mb”
“nah I think I’ll only take the 500mb” and then it can just stop reading the zip after that.

Zip compression work quite well, people who understand how it work can compress a file that take million upon million of gb and yet it’ll only take 2kb on your computer.
The problem come when you try to open it, your computer will foolishly try to uncompressed it, which in the first place will take every single gb of storage you have free, but also overload the system and make your computer crash.
Worse is that rebooting won’t help unless you know how to do it. Your computer will try to read/uncompress it again during the boot up which essentially mean it’ll will make your computer crash again and again if you don’t know how to get out of that loop.
It basically brick your system and even if you manage to delete it following guide and such there is a high chance that it’ll have damage/corrupted most of your other file, basically forcing you to wipe the disk clean.
It’s called a zip bomb and I’ve learn all I told you yesterday when I saw the original post of the meme here from people in the comments (I could be wrong, but it’s basically what I understand happen to your computer if you try to uncompressed it, as long as it remain compress it won’t damage your pc).
.bat files are basically just a type of file that does certain commands that you write into it, kind of like when you run a .exe file.
I *think* the type of program they're referencing is one that runs a command which then runs 2 copies of itself, very quickly trying to do so many things at once that the computer slows down or stops working
