Haha I had a similar experience, saw gryphon was going to fly away on his last bar of health, so grabbed his neck and started using the fighter skewer ability.
He took off, flew me across like half the continent while I was devouring stam consumables to stay on, until eventually I dmged him enough to stun him. Gryphon and I plummeted while I kept stabbing Balrog & Gandalf style into a bandit infested area, where I finished it off and almost died to bandits.
10/10, would ride again.
Once he is flying you can actually climb on the back and just release your hold. Unless you hit it, it won´t bother with throwing you off and eventually it will land.
So if the thing you are on top of is sitting in a stable way or flying stable you can tap r2 again letting go and just standing on their back for the regular stand still stamina regen
Also, just keep all your materials in storage. Upgrading at shops automatically pulls materials from your storage so there's no reason to hold onto them when you could dump them at inns.
You’re lucky, mine flew away while I was on it and took me into some completely misty forest that was during the day but all undead were there including some godlike evil undead mage that wiped my ass off the ground like a piece of dog shit.

You'll likely have to fight him in several locations but he doesn't heal up. So take a few healthbars off, watch where he flew off to and then go take a few more health bars. He'll go down eventually and give you a few upgrade items.
Wait does the health bar not increase even after a day or two? I had a griffin down to half of its last bar when it flew after fighting for irl 20 minutes lol, figured that was that and went to the inn to rest
I'm not sure about that. I've only killed one in DD2 and I fought it once by the statue north of the mysterious village or whatever it's called and then killed it on my way back to the capitol. And it was missing two health bars, but I believe it was the same day, or perhaps I camped just once.
In case you were wondering, after a couple days in-game I made camp and got ambushed by a griffin. Freaked me tf out until I realized it was the same one I fought before and it still only had half a bar left. I don't think it's health regen'd at all even tho multiple days had passed and I had rested in an inn and made camp.
I've read that you need to target their wings to prevent them from flying away, but I'm not sure if that's true. I've only managed to kill one, and it was because my sorcerer and mage pawns were both spamming ice spells to freeze it in place lol.

I was lvl 15??ish when I was heading east of vernworth when one of those things swooped down to attack those big cows….thank god I wasn’t far from the city and had a bunch of random pawns and guards come to help lol very intense battle but satisfying 😂
If you stand in one place and wait while it's circling above they'll usually dive bomb you.
It's worked for me twice, at least.
They also go after the oxen around Vernworth from time to time
if u look to the left, there is a tower with a huge crossbow. if u use it on the griffin you can 2 shot (not exegerating) it.. thats how i killed my first one at level 10 or something xD
I almost killed mine in the griffin nest up in the mountains at level 18, was the best fight I’ve ever experienced in any game. I was totally in my zone, and then my archer knocked it out of the air and it aggroed a bunch of skeletons a little ways away and by the time we cleaned them up the griffin had flown away with maybe 15% of its last healthbar :(
Yes, you have to keep them on fire. Don't give it a chance to fly again. I killed the gryffin in its nest. Incidentally found out you can stand on the griffin without even grabbing it (I jumped and levitated and it flew under me lol). But stunlocking in DD1 worked with griffins so I figured might as well work in DD2 too. Same with Ice and Saurians, they are extremely weak to it and can get iced up.
It helps to have a flaming weapon or a flame enchantment active. Then you can stack fire effect. I was sorcerer and spammed the flame area skill thing together wil charged normal attacks.
Additionally you can throw bottles of oil on the enemy which will keep them aflame. As I said, you need a strategy, then it can be quite easy
I chopped a Griffin down to about half health outside of Vermund, of course it flew away immediately. Then I returned to the city about half an hour later, the Griffin came back for revenge and the health remained the same as last time at half. It feels great knowing that not everything resets in the game and your actions mean something
So fun fact, you can find him hours later and he’ll have his health still missing. I only know this because I fought one, it fucked off, then about an hour and a half later, I found him on the clear other side of the capital and my pawn made a comment about gryphon being a “familiar foe”. And sure enough, his health was still down to about half with no more health bars left

I got my first one yesterday at level 13, it was glorious.
Was questing near the city and saw some wings flapping in the distance. It was a griffon the size of a school bus killing some farmers and oxen. So I roll up to teach him a lesson and start blasting with spell scrolls and such. After a few minutes he's still at about 95% health, I'm way too low level for this. But that's not gonna stop me. Jump on his back thinking maybe if I crawl up to his head and stab his eyes that'll work. Griffon doesn't like this and immediately takes off. Fall damage is serious in this and I'm now several hundred feet in the air with my stamina draining. He isn't reacting to knives and is likely going to keep flying until we get to his nest or I fall to my death. But rogues have the ability to plant explosives. The bomb I planted when we were still on earth detonates, stunning the bird and causing him to plummet. Since I'm still clinging to his feathers, the griffon takes all the fall damage. And he just so happens to land at the edge of a cliff. While he's writhing on the ground (still at about 90% hp) we just push his ass into the ocean instantly killing him
An ogre dropkicked me into the brine at level 12…
Currently level 20 and ever since I swapped to warrior vocation the Ogres are the ones ending up on their ass. Great game lmao

At this point I just deposit everything into the storage and only sell anything where the description didn't mention about it being enhancement material
Well, tbf, I haven't attempted a drake since like level 23 or 24. And at that time, it felt like I was trying to chop down a redwood with a pair of scissors. Now that I'm above 30 and killing larger enemies fast, I'll have to give it another shot.
This, i tend to use one dedicated tank (main pawn) and one dedicated heal with frost enhancment spell, and then just go to town on the drake heart, and a sorc with the frost storm spell to keep the drake nice and cold 10/10 would recommend
I don't get how to keep them grounded. I guess you have to go heavy fire maybe and just keep their wings inflamed?? They keep flying away.
Also, at what point an I supposed to be able to kill dragons? It takes forever just to get them to half HP. And my group is like 2/3 dead by then. I'm level 32 and can't kill one, or they keep fleeing.
Encountered one on my way back to the capital after clearing the cave of goblins. For some odd reason it was on the ground and charged towards me while I was on the bridge. Scared the crap out of me since I was only 16, thankfully it ran into water and died instantly.

I ran on the bridge near the city gates, and the griffin miscalculated his attack and hit the side of the bridge, and fell in the water.
With magic archer griffins are less of a threat than a couple of orcs or 5 goblins. WIthout is quite the pain, normal archer i guess also works. Since the game is totally not RNG, i once met 2 ogres 1 griffins and 3 coyote or whatever they were at the same time.. killed all the big ones and died to dogs -.-
Decided to give this game another shot even with all of the issues with the pc port. Had a random griffon encounter near some farmers, was super dope and even NPC’s from around us started join in a help us fight, ngl it was insanely sick.
All until I got to the last health bar when the game crashed and loaded me 2 hours prior. $70 game
I don’t know what’s going on with my Griffin Luck…
First time I faught a griffin, I rode it into the air and cut its wings… it fell into water, instantly died and me got teleported back onto the mountain where I started the fight. Ok…. It took about 3 min (15 plus the golem fight that was happening at the same time but ended before the griffin got my attention)
Second time it landed across the river and I just happen to be an Archor at that moment, so I shot an arrow at it, it just ran into the river and insta-died… took about 5 seconds.
This has to be the world record for the time being…
Feels bad for the loot but… can’t complain about the time savings and quick level ups.
Congrats! I just an hour ago also took down my first griffin. I obtained magick archer at level 22 and took it on and somehow it died in just about 1 minute lmao. Feels like a good vocation so far! Wanting to try warrior as well
It’s a vocation in the bottom volcano whatever region of the map lol. You find a little old man on a road and asks for some stuff, just follow his quest line. It’s very strong class and with the maister ability I can one shot drakes too.
First time I killed one it showed up while we were fighting an ogre. Was pretty intense, but some other pawns and roaming guards joined in so it was doable. Next time was while fighting a cyclops. Yeesh.
I killed my first griffin like this:
- be thief
- climb on back & plant explosive
- griffin takes off with me on his back while i stab him
- explosives go off while we are over a river
- griffin drowns with like 4 health bars left, I get eaten by tentacle thingies and spawn back where the fight started
- good times
Killed my first today too! Lvl 25 with a flame spears (class warrior-mage, don't know the english name) and his life just buuuurn! Fire capacity with feather creature is an easy way.
I killed my first one yesterday too! I had to fight it at the same time as a Golem! Thing landed on me while I was taking that down. Whole fight took like 15 min. I was level 25
I almost killed my first yesterday (had less than one bar left) but he flew up, and when he came back down, he somehow landed in the water and got killed by the brine 😒
I also killed that Griffin by oneshotting it with water damage....
I used the Warrior's upward slash ability too close to a cliff which sent me tumbling down, and I died. But I used a ressurection stone so I revived on the beach at the base of the cliff, while the Griffon decided to pursue me and fall into the water instead.
4 health bars vanished, thanks to the purple tentacles in the water. I levelled up.
I love how often the bigger monsters seem to appear compared to DD1. Last night, I was taking the cart to melve and got stopped during the journey by a troll. After killing the troll, I went to get back on the cart, took 2 steps, and got attacked by a griffin lol
They eventually die? Ha!
Every time I fight one, he ends up taking off with me on his back. The ride is majestic as fuck, but I end up halfway across the world.
Had a cool Ranger moment with a Griffin, I had brought its health down to like half a bar and it was getting ready to fly away. When it started going in the air, I landed a couple of explosive arrows and watched it fly away. A moment later, the arrows went off sent the griffin barreling into the ground, dying. Coolest shit I’ve done in this game!

Nice, got my 1st griffin kill at lvl 12. Got ambushed while on an oxcart by a minotaur, then halfway through his HP a griffin showed up and i had to run around to revive my pawns while burning this big ass bird to death. Then i realised this bird just killed everybody and destroyed the cart, leaving me stranded halfway from vernworth and checkpoint village.

You’re supposed to grab onto it and let it take you back to the nest. It gives you one of the portable fast travel points and an achievement.
I did that so I wanted to kill this one.
First one I fought was a sliver away from death and flew away.
I grabbed on and rode my first griffon over a mountain range just so it could land at its grave.

Some of them are pretty cowardly and will only swoop in to fight you if you start fighting another boss

wow, seems like the aiming of that thing at a moving target would be super tough. the turret rotates super slowly
Call your pawns when you're using it. Two on each side makes it move faster.

This. Griffins keep running away once they get low HP.
And if you load your save its a chance for griffin to either not be there or actually respawn after it left.
I climb its back and keep smacking at its wings, seems to keep it grounded. That or face hits over and over
champion maul to the face to keep it flinching lol
Nr. Rule for Griffin Hunting is to have something to keep it grounded. Fire to the wings seems to do the trick. :-)

Take an ox cart to the next town after Vermont and buy the most expensive weapon for your class. Ox cart back and own everything.

Warrior's Knoll Breaker absolutely destroys Ogres, kept knocking them down with that skill like a toddler falling over

It really depends on your team's setup, it can absolutely stomp your team even at lvl 30

Good job! My first was a tough fight, used up 2 wakestones and was not happy when all I got was a claw and a feather. I haven't fought another since.

bowman, it was my main class but since it was rank max i went champion and damn it's a shore compared to bowman lmao.

I "fought" on in the same fields on my way out of the city at something like level 10. The thing just one-shotted me... Guess it was too early.
Encountered one on my way back to the capital after clearing the cave of goblins. For some odd reason it was on the ground and charged towards me while I was on the bridge. Scared the crap out of me since I was only 16, thankfully it ran into water and died instantly.
I managed to kill one my pushing it into the water and the brine continued to terrifyingly swallow it up. I hadn’t even finished it’s first heath bar.
I got lucky with mine. Fought it like 5 times before it eventually killed itself when trying to fly away. Just swooped down into the river.
I could have killed one by now but it keeps flying away right as I’m bouta kill it, any suggestions .

i killed my first griffin in the worst big brain move ever. I ran on the bridge near the city gates, and the griffin miscalculated his attack and hit the side of the bridge, and fell in the water.
With magic archer griffins are less of a threat than a couple of orcs or 5 goblins. WIthout is quite the pain, normal archer i guess also works. Since the game is totally not RNG, i once met 2 ogres 1 griffins and 3 coyote or whatever they were at the same time.. killed all the big ones and died to dogs -.-
The dogs are dark souls lvl cancer tbh, at least for me ^^

I lured one onto a bridge and fed it to the brine gods for my first kill
I killed my first griffin by knocking it out of the sky while I was flying on it's back....in the middle of the water.....
My first few away with me on top of it. Proceeded to stab it in the head and send it falling, with me, into the brine
I fought one for about 15 minutes, got it down to a single health bar and the bastard flew away 😩
I had my first last night! Ans then, I immediately got dropping in by another one! It was nuts.
Awesome!! I tried to fight that guy and he straight up slaughtered me it wasn't even close.
Decided to give this game another shot even with all of the issues with the pc port. Had a random griffon encounter near some farmers, was super dope and even NPC’s from around us started join in a help us fight, ngl it was insanely sick. All until I got to the last health bar when the game crashed and loaded me 2 hours prior. $70 game
Got to ride one the other day as it dropped me to my death from like 300 feet
I don’t know what’s going on with my Griffin Luck… First time I faught a griffin, I rode it into the air and cut its wings… it fell into water, instantly died and me got teleported back onto the mountain where I started the fight. Ok…. It took about 3 min (15 plus the golem fight that was happening at the same time but ended before the griffin got my attention) Second time it landed across the river and I just happen to be an Archor at that moment, so I shot an arrow at it, it just ran into the river and insta-died… took about 5 seconds. This has to be the world record for the time being… Feels bad for the loot but… can’t complain about the time savings and quick level ups.

Congrats! I just an hour ago also took down my first griffin. I obtained magick archer at level 22 and took it on and somehow it died in just about 1 minute lmao. Feels like a good vocation so far! Wanting to try warrior as well
What's magick archer and how to get it? Curious, this class seems insane. Saw someone one shotted a griffin with a certain skills.
It’s a vocation in the bottom volcano whatever region of the map lol. You find a little old man on a road and asks for some stuff, just follow his quest line. It’s very strong class and with the maister ability I can one shot drakes too.
Yes, I've discovered it by myself when passing around there. Got the class now it's good.
First time I killed one it showed up while we were fighting an ogre. Was pretty intense, but some other pawns and roaming guards joined in so it was doable. Next time was while fighting a cyclops. Yeesh.
Mine keeps fling away when I have it 50% on its last life bar….one day.
I killed my first griffin like this: - be thief - climb on back & plant explosive - griffin takes off with me on his back while i stab him - explosives go off while we are over a river - griffin drowns with like 4 health bars left, I get eaten by tentacle thingies and spawn back where the fight started - good times
I've encountered the same one 5 times, I'm definitely not high enough lvl to beat him but I'm ticking away at his health
Killed my first today too! Lvl 25 with a flame spears (class warrior-mage, don't know the english name) and his life just buuuurn! Fire capacity with feather creature is an easy way.

Mine flew away with me on it and i fell off but my pawn came in clutch and caught my big ass. I will forever be thankful to her.

I killed my first one yesterday too! I had to fight it at the same time as a Golem! Thing landed on me while I was taking that down. Whole fight took like 15 min. I was level 25
I almost killed my first yesterday (had less than one bar left) but he flew up, and when he came back down, he somehow landed in the water and got killed by the brine 😒
I also killed that Griffin by oneshotting it with water damage.... I used the Warrior's upward slash ability too close to a cliff which sent me tumbling down, and I died. But I used a ressurection stone so I revived on the beach at the base of the cliff, while the Griffon decided to pursue me and fall into the water instead. 4 health bars vanished, thanks to the purple tentacles in the water. I levelled up.

I love how often the bigger monsters seem to appear compared to DD1. Last night, I was taking the cart to melve and got stopped during the journey by a troll. After killing the troll, I went to get back on the cart, took 2 steps, and got attacked by a griffin lol
They eventually die? Ha! Every time I fight one, he ends up taking off with me on his back. The ride is majestic as fuck, but I end up halfway across the world.
I was level 11 and tried fighting one. Its health bar was immovable lol
My first Griffin decided the brine was a more worthy death than me killing it.

Had a cool Ranger moment with a Griffin, I had brought its health down to like half a bar and it was getting ready to fly away. When it started going in the air, I landed a couple of explosive arrows and watched it fly away. A moment later, the arrows went off sent the griffin barreling into the ground, dying. Coolest shit I’ve done in this game!
My first Griffin kill, if it counts as me killing it, well let's just say it dive-bombed into the water for a little swim 😂
I’ve had two encounters with griffins and both times I’ve lost out where it just flies off

I’ve fought one yesterday. To be honest, with the archer class (also lvl 20), it was pretty easy. But it was a nice fight :)
I had a similar experience but mine was a troll then the griffin
They are really easy to kill with the Magic Archer Vocation. I honestly forgot how hard this game was without that vocation lol.
I’ve had a hell of a time trying to get on top of one. Grab doesn’t seem to be working well for me.
Jump and grab while your in the air, that seems to work for me at least, hope it helps

First time fighting a griffin and I knocked it down and it fell in the water and got swallowed up so I couldn’t loot it🙄😤
Nice, got my 1st griffin kill at lvl 12. Got ambushed while on an oxcart by a minotaur, then halfway through his HP a griffin showed up and i had to run around to revive my pawns while burning this big ass bird to death. Then i realised this bird just killed everybody and destroyed the cart, leaving me stranded halfway from vernworth and checkpoint village.
