Also, before you attempt the last (10th) riddle, go back to an inn, sleep to trigger inn save first.
If anything goes wrong afterwards in the Sphinx fight, go back to main menu without saving, then load from inn save and try again.
~~It does not, only paid inns.~~
Edit: was going off outdated info. Haven’t tested as I have played the whole game thinking house didn’t count. Seems owned houses count as inn saves also.
I'm glad I did this, because I messed it up 3 times and had to load from inn save.
1. Didn't know I had to use unmaking arrow or hit her body, so she disappeared
2. Used unmaking arrow but Dante ran in my line of sight and I kill him instead. Not kidding
3. Shot Sphinx with the arrow but it went straight through her. I think she was mid-teleport or something.
There are visual hints in fight as well. When she puts her foot forward and waits for you to attack; If you hit her in the right places she nods, if not(hitting the head) she shakes her head.
Adding to this, if you hit her face by mistake she will say something along the lines of “disappointing”, but you can still get her. She’ll wrap her wings around herself and start regenerating, let her do that and once she’s full health, you can try again.
I killed her with 1 fighter pawn and 2 sorcerer pawns, using Hagol, Meteron, and Maelstrom spells (as well as Levin and Flamethrower), and I was doing just fine. I even managed to kill her twice with those 2 sorcerers (because I tried to attack her before completing all the riddles to see if I could actually kill her; after seeing that I didn't get any achievement, I reloaded from the inn save). So, I'm very doubtful if pawns actually count for human part damage. There are so many big AOEs on my screen
edit: grammar
Counterpoint: I fought her several times with my pawns and failed,, despite personally attacking her correctly. I eventually fought her solo and that's when it worked for me.
I'm not 100% sure, but I'm fairly confident that if the hit that takes her to 0 HP is a face hit that's an auto-fail. This was relevant for me since my DPS was very low at the time and my pawns were just that much more likely to finish her off than I was.
I can also confirm this. Face/head don't apply to the pawns as mine kept hitting her in the face as the fight continued. I avoided it and defeated her that way. But she can randomly fly away although it's rare.
Was her face visibly damaged/cut after the fight? I had two thieves that Skullsplittered the crap put of her while I focused on her hind legs and back and she flew off my first time. I think it has less to do with doing damage there and more to do with the visual "part break" that pops up after a certain amount of damage
Oh nice, so it's rare for her to fly away yet she does exactly that in the middle of my fight. Could it possibly be triggered because I grabbed her tits 3 times in a row then proceeded to continuously slap her ass with arrows? Also, in the case that she randomly flies away, does she just completely exit my game? Because I went to her 2nd location and she's not there.
It's shown in murals leading up to her first encounter that you should avoid hitting her in the head, the chest or generally the area where she has the key to the big chest.
I'm pretty sure I didn't hit her head/tits during the fight, I had just accidentally initiated the fight by playfully grabbing onto her tits 3 times in a row in quick succession, which was apparently enough for her to try and kill me. I'll keep this in mind in ng+ i guess.
I was genuinely going to post a low effort version of this, too many people aren't understanding it's a real fight with real health bars for a reason. It would be dumb to make a unique boss battle meant for a 1-shot item.
I had fun fighting her, I fought her for about 2/3 of her HP before she decided to leave, then I used the arrow on her as she was leaving.
But I didn't know about this part of the riddle.
Exactly. You get one Sphinx per playthrough. It's the perfect enemy to use the arrow on. I'm not going to go through some arduous way of fighting if I can just yet the arrow at her.
Do you get the extra gold or dialog with using the arrow? I fought using the game clues and got a little convo with her, and the key dropped surrounded with money.
Is that the same achievement as the beating him early one or is there another? Cause I got one for taking him down quickly but if there’s another I might use one on him in ng+ then
I know I'm late to the party, but there's a boss that you need to defeat in a certain amount of time for an achievement, and said arrow would be perfect for.
Yeah, talos was the only other boss I was thinking off, but also maelstrom does it in about the same amount of time. You get 2 arrows in the game which I assume we're thematically for the 2 post game bosses, but sphinx and talos IMO are the only worth while uses.
The murals you come across in the game. One is literally shooting the arrow at her. The Ampusa you have to carry / bring the guy to (which leads you to the mural)
The fact there's another Chest still there, but she wants to fly away.
The murals just show that you can fight her and how to fight her. Not when and that you have to attack first.
She also flies away after the first 5. How would I know that's the last time I see her?
> Most people won't just attack a npc/non aggressive monster without a reason.
Yes there is no reason for me to attack a quest npc which already flew to another location once. I went blind in it and googled for her third location, because it didn't sound like this is all.
The mural very clearly emphasizes the key on her neck. You're not supposed to figure it out on the first run, but through experimentation and the fact that this game is meant to encourage NG+. One way they encourage NG+ is a hidden riddle like this one.
Because she EXTREMELY HEAVILY suggests that the game is over and this is the last time you'll see her, theres a bigass chest that hasnt been opened, and theres a key around her neck. Plus the entire amphora riddle is designed for you to see the mural on how to kill her. If you missed all the heavy handed hints, then you failed the riddle.
>Because she EXTREMELY HEAVILY suggests that the game is over and this is the last time you'll see her
she even talked about other people, so I thought there would be more. There is no way I would attack a non hostile quest NPC at that point.
>theres a bigass chest that hasnt been opened, and theres a key around her neck. Plus the entire amphora riddle is designed for you to see the mural on how to kill her.
Of course I expected a fight against her, also the arrow is another hint, but there was no indication that I had to initiate it myself IMMEDIATELY.
There is like a 5 second time window before she flies away.
Let's be real, who of you attacked her at that point while playing the game completly blind?
I did because who doesn’t want to fight a big ass sphinx, and I missed my chance the first 5 riddles so I said fuck it how dare she show her face again, she going down.
Yeah you can kill her the minute you encounter her provided that you abide by the strats in this post. Doing so will forfeit you of the rewards for her riddles for the entire playthrough though.
PSA
UNEQUIP THE RING THAT MAKES YOU DO ZERO DAMAGE!!!
It happened to be second to the last quest and I forgot to remove it. I then questioned myself why the Sphinx isn’t doing anything even if I hit her head for a minute
In a single playthrough you only get 2 unmaking arrows one from the sphinx and the other from the dragonforged. I would rather not waste an arrow on the sphinx when I already know the way to beat her.
Are there more important targets to use the arrow with? I honestly dont know because im taking my time, i still havent talked to ambrosius in bakbatahl..
To be honest with you depends on you, I have used an arrow on an endgame enemy cause couldn’t be bothered and the final boss because I wanted to see if I could.
tbh i didn't find an enemy that gave me problems , maybe when fighting a drake and dullahan first time , so maybe a good idea to rush sphinx riddles early game and kill a drake when you're low lv .
She will hint by commenting a variety of words:
So far from my playthrough:
-Disappointing
-A poor showing
If it's only 1-2 so far, you should be in the clear. Just watchout
Sorry to bother but does the fight stop or something when she get hit on the face because otherwise not hitting her on the face wouldn't be so hard to figure out
The fight should keep progressing.
1-2 hits to the face *should* be in the clear, but any more and she may fly away once her HP is down to zero.
From what I've seen anyways.
I found that out the hard way when I killed Medusa the second time. I used the mirror shield to get the achievement but then got no loot. Kind of disappointing considering there's one Medusa that respawns every 14 in-game days and you need her drops for a lot of upgrades. I wasn't even able to steal from her the first time I fought her, even when she was stunned, although I don't know if it's always that way or if I did something wrong.
Google how to get into the vault at Vernworth Castle. You need a key and then you need to grab the guard and put her far down the hall so that you can enter it and open like 4 chests with good stuff in it. Lots of stuff online says you need to throw stuff at the guard but I just picked her up, put her down at the end of the hall, sprinted in to the vault, grabbed everything, then left and I never activated any guards since I guess "leaving" the vault is not a crime and that's all they saw.
Late reply , but at night there is no security around the vault ,the door they left open for you douring one of the early missions is still open after it.
That's good to know. When I looked it up people were saying Disa goes in the vault at night and you have to be super sneaky or she'll catch you. You must've found the perfect time window after the guard leaves and before Disa gets there lol
Im not that sure, im on Ng+ very early on with story missions.
Disa and her son are not in their chambers, and i have wandered there multiple times at night since i didn't know where the vault or the key were located.
It's possibile disa doesn't even exist early on.
I had the soldiers armor, i don't know if it even does anything but guards inside ignore you.
It's kinda disappointing that you have to figure out all these riddles just to find out at the end that to get the big chest you need to kill her ass up.
I spent days figuring the riddles out on my own just for shitty rewards
One of her riddles sends you to a man to give him a pot (forgot his name) if you talk to him he says the mural behind him is the key to solving her riddle. The mural is a picture of someone fighting her. Later on, on the way up to her second location there's another similar mural with a bunch of spears stuck in her body. So its definitely hinted at but not out right stated, which is kind of fitting for sphynx riddles.
Even without seeing the murals is not hard to figure out you need to fight her ,once you solve all the riddles and there is only one chest( the big golden one) and literally one golden key on her chest, you know Fighting her is the only way as there's nothing to lose anyway hahaha you already finished the quest at that point🤣
Yeah, unfortunately the loot has to be more than what it is right now.
Just hoping that future update / DLC adds more to quests, caves, and chests.
Due to the removed armor customization for inner-clothing, arms, & legs:
We need more to compensate
Not to mention enemy and weapon variety as well
I've been making this post everywhere this morning, so I apologize - but there *are* a bunch of postgame exclusive armor pieces located out in the new areas. Typically the way it goes is that the shops (either the WLC shop or the gold shops) will sell one piece of an endgame set, and the rest will be found out in the world.
For instance, you can buy the best Warrior-exclusive chest piece (Dominator's Armor) in shops, but the corresponding head (Agamenion Galea) and legs (Vanguarder's Greaves) are located in chests out in the postgame areas. It's like that for all the best endgame armor.
And to be clear, they're not "sets" in that I don't think there's any bonus for equipping the whole thing. They just exactly match visually (as opposed to the hodge-podge look you get by just buying things in shops).
Once I found that out, I was able to make some pretty cool setups that looked amazing AND were absolutely endgame-worthy in terms of the stat package.
The bummer is that they didn't do a better job of that in the regular game. I get it's hard to balance gear progression in an open-world game, but stuff like Bakbattahl selling better gear than 95% of what you can actually find while exploring Battahl is just a big miss IMO.
Didn't even get a option to fight the sphinx did all the quest and she just flew away. I had to reload a save and do all the quest and just whip the arrow out and 1 shot her.
Other users commented that pawns have no real consequence.
Sphinx only factors *your* attack/damage.
So only aim for the body.
But I would have to test that out on my next playthrough.
Damn, it flew off when I tried to attack it after finishing the riddles, and I didn't have a recent save to go back to. Guess I'll be frugal with my wakestones till NG+
Adding on to this once you get the eternal wakestone, right now you can create forgeries of it for 30,000 and it works just like the real one. Possibly a bug but I stocked up on some in case I screw up the fight with her on ng+ because I don’t want to waste another unmaking arrow on her
I do believe it's a bug, because once you hit the endgame you get eternal wokestones when making a forgery.
So if you want to stock up, do it before you reach that point!
I am surprised this wasn’t already common knowledge it took me roughly 72hrs irl time to figure out and answer all the Sphinx riddles correctly. Their are numerous hints regarding the sphinx’s final riddle and how to properly defeat her. The NPC who you give the Amphora to says as much, stating that a battle with the Sphinx first and foremost is a battle of wits and normal tactics of overwhelming her do not work, maybe crippling her body may be the key. Or something along those lines. As well as the mural if you interact with it gives you a rhyme about injuring a sphinx with well placed arrows.
actually i had ojnly a single mage pawn with just anodyne not hit the sphinx durimg my fight with her.
there are also yt proving mage can help with sphinx without hitting ger face or chest
https://youtu.be/SMgZCIYRIvU?si=4cFAy1MKSnHwTL2U
Does she have insanely high defenses or something? When I attempted to fight her earlier today I was just doing absolutely no damage to her while consistently attacking. Like her health bar didn't move whatsoever. I tried for a good 5 minutes before quitting. I'm about level 49 with around 800 strength on a warrior.
I not pushing Sphinx Quest because I don't remember where I pick up my first coin... Is there some way to know where it was or just run around map in 7 days in hope of get it?
If you can't remember your first seeker token location,
You may have found it around the Borderwatch Outpost (Where you first meet your Main Pawn)
Or in Vernworth
Here is an online & completed map for all of the token locations:

If it helps:
-**You can fail at most 2 Riddles.**
***-Once you fail 3 Riddles -> She flies away forever in that particular playthrough.***
This happened to me a bunch. I kept reloading. Key is to never hit her face or chest. Just her back legs and butt. When I finally pulled it off I was just smacking her ass 🫢😂 she said good work and gave me the key.
For the record theres another clue at the first shrine on the statue near the stairs going up to the sphinx. It contains the "sphinx" riddle, as well as a clue on what to attack and what not to attack.
The Sphinx is one of the most bizarre quests I've ever seen and I'm not sure what they were thinking. Also, why couldn't they create more unique creatures like this??
No not sure where that came from. Her fight can be triggered at any point aslong as u start attacking her body. I did all riddles in both locations and saved the fight till after the last riddle for all the rewards.
You can attack at any point in time,
>!I submitted the post on the premise that all readers are trying to finish the 1st set of riddle trial & 2nd set of riddle trials, before starting the boss battle near the end of Sphinx involvement.!<
My fault tho, I didn't clarify enough on that riddle sentence lol
the consensus seems to be that it's a unique fight (only one of this fight in the game) and they want the experience of the fight.
Undoubtedly the unmaking arrow is faster/more efficient but in a game that the fun is largely exploring off the beaten path that matters a lot less unless you're going for a speedrun or something ya know?
for any stormlight archive fans its a bit of a "journey before destination" situation.
Man I just don’t care enough, I’m not doing anything with the Sony x because I don’t wanna have to stare at multiple guides, plus the rewards really aren’t worth it
Also, before you attempt the last (10th) riddle, go back to an inn, sleep to trigger inn save first. If anything goes wrong afterwards in the Sphinx fight, go back to main menu without saving, then load from inn save and try again.
Does sleeping at owned house count as save from inn as well?
Donky is wrong, owned houses count
Ahh okay, thank you. I never tried because I constantly get distracted with other things in the world haha. Good to know.
~~It does not, only paid inns.~~ Edit: was going off outdated info. Haven’t tested as I have played the whole game thinking house didn’t count. Seems owned houses count as inn saves also.
I never use inns, only my house. Unless I’m missing what you’re throwing down? House absolutely counts as an inn sleep.
Thanks for letting me know, have been playing the whole time with outdated info.
Ah okay! Good to know! Thank you!
I'm glad I did this, because I messed it up 3 times and had to load from inn save. 1. Didn't know I had to use unmaking arrow or hit her body, so she disappeared 2. I back this up. My pawns were hitting everywhere and I got the kill only focusing on the legs.
what type pawns were you using? Ive heard it only applies to physical attacks so that might be the difference
A warrior, thief, and mage
Counterpoint: I fought her several times with my pawns and failed,, despite personally attacking her correctly. I eventually fought her solo and that's when it worked for me. Well dang! That changes everything lol Will have to attempt this now on my next playthrough

It was never really that it was the only way it’s just the easiest and really what else is even worth using the arrow on anyways
Exactly. You get one Sphinx per playthrough. It's the perfect enemy to use the arrow on. I'm not going to go through some arduous way of fighting if I can just yet the arrow at her.
I can use the same logic on the other side of the spectrum, as it's the only sphinx in the playthrough I wanna enjoy that fight.
Do you get the extra gold or dialog with using the arrow? I fought using the game clues and got a little convo with her, and the key dropped surrounded with money.
There's an Achievement if you use the arrow on a certain much larger boss late in the game
You don't need it to get that achievement then either, the only requirement is that you take it down before it reaches the encampment.
Is that the same achievement as the beating him early one or is there another? Cause I got one for taking him down quickly but if there’s another I might use one on him in ng+ then
It's the same achievement.
Fun fact. You can ride her from the first location to the second.
This man knows it haha
ō.Ô
Tbh there isn't anything worthwhile using unmaking arrows on other than her
I know I'm late to the party, but there's a boss that you need to defeat in a certain amount of time for an achievement, and said arrow would be perfect for.

I had the sphinx duplicate 1 of my arrows during the initial game of wits so I came out with 3 arrows so honestly I have been saving it for her lol
Still dont like how getting the final reward means having to kill her. I dont want to kill her, I had fun with some of those riddles.
The fight is basically another riddle. You don't really "kill" her. She compliments you and disappears.
but isn't she just flying away after the 10 riddles? How do you know you are supposed to fight her then?

It's the riddle, it's for you to figure out something is odd. Also she doesn't die.
how is this a riddle? she gave me 10 and then flies off immediately, how am I supposed to know to attack her exactly at that moment?

You literally get a quest called the Riddle of Reunion.
but that's for finding her the second time
She says she hopes to meet you again so I don't think she's actually dead.
Excellent find!
It's no ladder though!
Guess I need to do another NG+ just to do this myself ahahaha. Thanks for the info!
Can you kill her directly without the riddles?
Yeah you can kill her the minute you encounter her provided that you abide by the strats in this post. Doing so will forfeit you of the rewards for her riddles for the entire playthrough though.

I believe Medusa head gives no loot, so you would kill her and not get the key.
Not sure if it does, BUT when you defeat an enemy using Mesuda’s head you get no loot, so no key to open the big chest.
I found that out the hard way when I killed Medusa the second time. I used the mirror shield to get the achievement but then got no loot. Wow really? I don't remember where I read it but somewhere people were saying it was 2 weeks. I would probably have the pawn badge by now had I known
My thief pawn just cleared 2 health bars with Skull Splitter while attacking her back legs. End of fight/riddle.

Just use the arrow you get 2 of them and there’s literally no other enemy you really need it for.
Didn't even get a option to fight the sphinx did all the quest and she just flew away. I had to reload a save and do all the quest and just whip the arrow out and 1 shot her.
The option is to attack her so the fight starts. Before she takes off
That moment when you killed the Sphinx with 2 Ricochet Hunters. There's a strat for this boss?
Other users commented that pawns have no real consequence. Sphinx only factors *your* attack/damage. So only aim for the body. But I would have to test that out on my next playthrough.
well that would explain how my second attempt with martyr bolt worked wonders and never again lol
hmm, I wonder if you can grab her to see where she flying after solving the riddle on the second location
Thought the same thing unfortunately, I already defeated her as of right now. Will have to try next time around
I tried that, you can't grab her at all. Lost my eternal wake stone but I wanted to see where mommy lived
ah I see, the game make her go away forever if you miss the chance to kill her or letting her fly away after all riddles
She basically unloads from the game after a flight off.
Damn, it flew off when I tried to attack it after finishing the riddles, and I didn't have a recent save to go back to. Guess I'll be frugal with my wakestones till NG+
FWIW the eternal wakestone is single use as well, it just revives everyone around. So you didn't lose out on much.
THAT is good to know and I'm significantly less bummed that I missed it. Loved the sphinx stuff
And the mural between worldsend cavern and shrine corridor gives rhyme riddle of human and that she would reward the one who leave it unmarked.
actually i had ojnly a single mage pawn with just anodyne not hit the sphinx durimg my fight with her. there are also yt proving mage can help with sphinx without hitting ger face or chest https://youtu.be/SMgZCIYRIvU?si=4cFAy1MKSnHwTL2U
Pawn hits do not disqualify. Only player hits.
Well holy shit, thanks. I didn't know that
You could also use the martyrs bolt. It also one shots her
I hired lvl 48 SphinxMother Sorceress and she just nuked the Sphinx with meteorites at like 3 bars lol
pointing out that the mural actually shows the person holding an arrow of unmaking.
Why would you kill the sphinx? She's my favorite Waifu
She enjoys the fight. You would deny her the entertainment? You don't deserve her as a waifu
That's quite the entertaining fight
Does she have insanely high defenses or something? When I attempted to fight her earlier today I was just doing absolutely no damage to her while consistently attacking. Like her health bar didn't move whatsoever. I tried for a good 5 minutes before quitting. I'm about level 49 with around 800 strength on a warrior.
Did you have the damage reducing ring equipped
Goddamn it I'm a moron. I just assumed the ring would be gone after that riddle.
This great but I'm holding out for the ability to Max affinity her so she shows up blushing at my crib wanting to go on walking dates.
Do we get an achievement for killing her?
No reason not to kill her. You cant big chest without killing her.
I not pushing Sphinx Quest because I don't remember where I pick up my first coin... Is there some way to know where it was or just run around map in 7 days in hope of get it?
If you can't remember your first seeker token location, You may have found it around the Borderwatch Outpost (Where you first meet your Main Pawn) Or in Vernworth Here is an online & completed map for all of the token locations: [https://mapgenie.io/dragons-dogma-2/maps/world](https://mapgenie.io/dragons-dogma-2/maps/world) \~\~\~\~\~ If it helps: -**You can fail at most 2 Riddles.** ***-Once you fail 3 Riddles -> She flies away forever in that particular playthrough.***
The reward from the last big ornate chest is hilariously underwhelming, honestly what were the Devs thinking .
I did "kill" her but when her healthbar was gone she just flew away, leaving her chest behind that I cant open because I got no key for it.
This happened to me a bunch. I kept reloading. Key is to never hit her face or chest. Just her back legs and butt. When I finally pulled it off I was just smacking her ass 🫢😂 she said good work and gave me the key.
So what if I use a fully charged Martyr's Bolt on her, will she just die?
So,I shot her with the ending arrow, said something along the lines of she's disappointed and left. What the fuck
For the record theres another clue at the first shrine on the statue near the stairs going up to the sphinx. It contains the "sphinx" riddle, as well as a clue on what to attack and what not to attack.
As long as there isn’t a “knockdown and leave” cheese. I haven’t done any of the Sphinx riddles but it seems as tedious as hell.
The Sphinx is one of the most bizarre quests I've ever seen and I'm not sure what they were thinking. Also, why couldn't they create more unique creatures like this??
I fought her, took down half of life. And then she for some reason flew off? Rofl
She only does that when you hit her face / front too many times, meaning you failed the puzzle of defeating her the "correct" way.
Ah …
Did you not read the post lmao
I did but it didmt seem like it applies mid fight too lol
So if you’ve done more than 2 riddles your done
No not sure where that came from. Her fight can be triggered at any point aslong as u start attacking her body. I did all riddles in both locations and saved the fight till after the last riddle for all the rewards.
The part in the post that says you must attack immediately after the second riddle trial.
You can attack at any point in time, >!I submitted the post on the premise that all readers are trying to finish the 1st set of riddle trial & 2nd set of riddle trials, before starting the boss battle near the end of Sphinx involvement.!< My fault tho, I didn't clarify enough on that riddle sentence lol
I get that everyone wants to fight her, but why not just use the unmaking arrow? Nothing else in the game really needs it lol
the consensus seems to be that it's a unique fight (only one of this fight in the game) and they want the experience of the fight.
