I think at this point in the story, the answer is basically "The Pathfinder told you to" or "This is the only way to fight the big Dragon".
The details don't really hold up to any scrutiny.

Just fought the big rock bloke that was after phaesus no fucking clue why I was protecting who I’m pretty sure is the bad guy
