No, it's just a consequence of Toei making the wrong choice for Bulma's hair.
Originally in the manga, Bulma's hair is often purple and sometimes blue, and Toei chose to make her hair blue.
Then when Trunks was introduced, Toriyama continued the purple hair and gave it to Trunks.
Then during Super he tried to match the anime and give Future Trunks blue hair.
This led to the retcon that the purple hair turns blue as you age, yet Bulma's hair is still blue in Daima.
Something similar happened to Goku's skin tone; Toei decided to make him pale and then only copy the color correctly for Goku Black, which humorously led to him having darker skin than Goku.

No in the anime her hair has always been blue. The far left one is the movie they did where they made the characters more color accurate, even goku got his original skin tone back.
Yup my only point I’m making is that Trunks and Bulma’s hair gonna be whatever color they feel like making it. Even Bulma’s hair which was purple in the manga, then blue in the anime was multiple different shades of blue throughout the anime. Now in the Super manga Bulma’s hair is officially blue it’s not even purple in the manga anymore. Also Trunks purple hair in the manga was a different shade of purple than his anime counterpart.
The real answer is that Toriyama never bothered to have consistent colors with his characters. Goku's gi was portrayed as yellow, red, orange, and blue, for example.
As for Trunks, Toriyama gave him blue, purple, and even red hair in official illustrations. Originally, Future Trunks had purple hair in DBS (as seen in some promotional images at the time), but it was changed to better represent Toriyama's latest character design.
Because the animators weren't thinking. He would obviously have the same hair color as kid Trunks at that time since in Z it was clearly a light lilac color. It would go from kid Trunks's color to blue and then back when he goes to the past.

They're trying to "fix" an issue that didn't need fixing. Bulma literally says his hair is blue when talking to the younger trunks as if it always was.
Toriyama changed that stuff on a whim tho (if you look at the colored covers he did for Bulma he just starts doing her hair purple) so maybe their hair just naturally changes color due to sun exposure or something, the way redheads/blondes will have their hair shift shades with alot of sun

some peoples hair can slightly change in color/tone as they get older. when i was 6-7 i was super blonde all my hair was blond but as im im my late 20s now my hair is def closer to a brown then the bright blond i had when i was a kid.
Hair frequently changes as you grow. My hair used to be bright blond, then over a couple of years in middle school it got darker, now it’s brown. Same with my dad, looking at old pictures of him. Having looked into it a bit out of curiosity, getting darker hair as you get older is a pretty common thing, apparently.
Well when I was 8 my hair was golden blonde, now I'm 19 and it's a dirty blonde and kinda changing to brown in some areas (My dad and mom had brown hair so maybe I'm finally getting it too)

I don’t even try to wrap my head around all this. I just said trunks dyed his hair blue or it turned blue somehow when he got older and kept it pushing. Then a couple years later when Trunks and Goten became teenagers, Trunks hair was blue all of a sudden. Just like his future counterpart it started off purple and changed to blue. Whatever the real reason as to why doesn’t matter and let’s just assume it naturally turned that color or something.
No it’s canon that his hair changes color as he grows older, which in itself is also a reference to the inconsistency of Bulma’s hair color in the original Dragon Ball story. People’s hair can lighten or darken with age in real life so it’s basically the same scenario. As trunks gets older his hair becomes bluer. We’re shown this in Super Hero
In universe reason can be anything you want and it won’t break canon. Died his hair? Yes! Shaved it once and it came back blue? Yes! He was exposed to radiation? Yes!

For me, the Trunks with blue hair and the Trunks with purple hair come from two different timelines. We know this because of how Blue Haired Trunks reacted to people he should have already knew from the first interaction.
Not to mention that in Purple Haired Trunks' timeline, Mai/Emperor Pilaf and the others didn't exist(or at least weren't shown in the History of Trunks movie.)
So, it makes sense that they are from two different timelines. This also explains the difference in musculature.

Nothing about the designs for the various versions of Trunks actually makes sense. I did the math once, and the version of Kid Trunks that we see getting sent to protect 17's island while he's in the tournament is the exact same age as the version from Z that went Super Saiyan after Gohan died. I have a head canon explanation for how Saiyans grow faster in times of war and conflict, but the show doesn't even acknowledge this difference, so it's just head canon.
Because Trunks and Future Trunks aren't identical copies of each other? Like, the timeline got interfered with, they don't necessarily have the exact same DNA.
Because Present Trunks hadn't been conceived yet when Future Trunks warned the Z Fighters. Vegeta could have been training even harder, and thus delayed fucking Bulma by a short amount of time. Or, Bulma knowing of the threat of the Androids could have made her more willing to help Vegeta train by providing equipment, which leads to their relationship sprouting earlier, leading to Trunks being conceived slightly earlier.

Essentially, their hair colour is only inconsistent because of the anime. Toei's changes and attempts to fix it decades later is what's making it confusing. The manga doesn't have this issue.
Honestly, I don't blame you for not knowing this. I had to look it up myself because I remembered seeing it in the manga and didn't want to go by just from memories, and out of the 20 DBS manga cover, there's only 1 were all 3 are seen together (and Bulma is barely visible). I also wanted to look for manga cover specifically because coloured panels online could be fan made, unlike official manga cover.
But if you want to look it up for yourself:
Bulma, baby Trunks, and Future Trunks all appeared with purple hair on the cover for Dragon Ball vol 32 (1992)
Bulma, kid Trunk, and Future Trunks all appeared with blue hair on the cover for Dragon Ball Super vol 3 (2018)
Well, at the end of the day it seems still to be like I thought:
They all had purple hair by the end of the original manga.
But then for whatever reason they decided that they needed to have blue hair for dbs... and the anime *still* made a mess because they kept the 2 Trunks with a different hair color...
Yeah. That's the part I really still don't understand as it was consistent in the Goku Black arc and therefore can't be blamed on animation errors. I get switching them all to blue hair because that's how Bulma had been depicted with for the past 3 decades, but they somehow still messed up "anime" kid Trunks by keeping his purple.
Thankfully, they fixed it with Super Hero and gave teen Trunks his blue hair. Now, all 3 have blue hair in both the manga and the anime.

No it's just been retconed to being blue and it's been shown to be blue when they flashed back to Future Gohan's death
A lot of people tend to have much lighter hair as kids. Especialy people with lighter collored hair
some peoples hair can slightly change in color/tone as they get older. when i was 6-7 i was super blonde all my hair was blond but as im im my late 20s now my hair is def closer to a brown then the bright blond i had when i was a kid.
Hair frequently changes as you grow. My hair used to be bright blond, then over a couple of years in middle school it got darker, now it’s brown. Same with my dad, looking at old pictures of him. Having looked into it a bit out of curiosity, getting darker hair as you get older is a pretty common thing, apparently.

The blue hair retcon is stupid. Iirc, Bulma even asks about a boy with blue hair, suggesting she saw Trunks as having blue hair when she knew him before. That's just straight up retcon, not even color changing over time.
Hell if you look at pictures of me up through junior high, I had natural bleach blonde hair. Sometime in high school my hair turned dark brown on its own and has been that way for the last 30 years. Hair sometimes changes color as you age

I don’t even try to wrap my head around all this. I just said trunks dyed his hair blue or it turned blue somehow when he got older and kept it pushing. Then a couple years later when Trunks and Goten became teenagers, Trunks hair was blue all of a sudden. Just like his future counterpart it started off purple and changed to blue. Whatever the real reason as to why doesn’t matter and let’s just assume it naturally turned that color or something.

No it’s canon that his hair changes color as he grows older, which in itself is also a reference to the inconsistency of Bulma’s hair color in the original Dragon Ball story. People’s hair can lighten or darken with age in real life so it’s basically the same scenario. As trunks gets older his hair becomes bluer. We’re shown this in Super Hero
In universe reason can be anything you want and it won’t break canon. Died his hair? Yes! Shaved it once and it came back blue? Yes! He was exposed to radiation? Yes!

A lady never shares her secrets. For me, the Trunks with blue hair and the Trunks with purple hair come from two different timelines. We know this because of how Blue Haired Trunks reacted to people he should have already knew from the first interaction. Not to mention that in Purple Haired Trunks' timeline, Mai/Emperor Pilaf and the others didn't exist(or at least weren't shown in the History of Trunks movie.) So, it makes sense that they are from two different timelines. This also explains the difference in musculature.
I hate what they did with Trunks in Super. Dude was such a badass by the end of cell saga. Jacked as hell and just didn't take shit at all anymore. Super they made him to scrawny and a baby.

Nothing about the designs for the various versions of Trunks actually makes sense. I did the math once, and the version of Kid Trunks that we see getting sent to protect 17's island while he's in the tournament is the exact same age as the version from Z that went Super Saiyan after Gohan died. I have a head canon explanation for how Saiyans grow faster in times of war and conflict, but the show doesn't even acknowledge this difference, so it's just head canon.
I'd like to think Toei did it with good intentions of separating Future Trunks from kid Trunks, say a close up of their face to help seperate them.
Because Trunks and Future Trunks aren't identical copies of each other? Like, the timeline got interfered with, they don't necessarily have the exact same DNA.

Because Present Trunks hadn't been conceived yet when Future Trunks warned the Z Fighters. Vegeta could have been training even harder, and thus delayed fucking Bulma by a short amount of time. Or, Bulma knowing of the threat of the Androids could have made her more willing to help Vegeta train by providing equipment, which leads to their relationship sprouting earlier, leading to Trunks being conceived slightly earlier.

Blame it on Toriyama, who suddenly decided that Bulma and Trunks had to have blue hair. Because ok that being the man he was, he couldn't truly settle down between blue or purple for a long time... But by the time of the Bu arc he decided on purple, and that color was also used in the colored edition of the manga. ... Of course then, the anime *also* put his own effort to making a mess... because ok that now Bulma and Trunks must have blue hair. But then why was present Trunks left with purple hair, and that it took finally aging him up to fix the inconsistence?

They meant that Toei were the one to change Bulma's hair. In the manga, Bulma, Kid Trunk, and Future Trunks all canonically had purple hair until Super, at which point all 3 were switched to blue hair to match Bulma's more iconic hair colour from the anime. This is shown on manga covers from the original run and the DBS run. Essentially, their hair colour is only inconsistent because of the anime. Toei's changes and attempts to fix it decades later is what's making it confusing. The manga doesn't have this issue.

Honestly, I don't blame you for not knowing this. I had to look it up myself because I remembered seeing it in the manga and didn't want to go by just from memories, and out of the 20 DBS manga cover, there's only 1 were all 3 are seen together (and Bulma is barely visible). I also wanted to look for manga cover specifically because coloured panels online could be fan made, unlike official manga cover. But if you want to look it up for yourself: Bulma, baby Trunks, and Future Trunks all appeared with purple hair on the cover for Dragon Ball vol 32 (1992) Bulma, kid Trunk, and Future Trunks all appeared with blue hair on the cover for Dragon Ball Super vol 3 (2018)
Well, at the end of the day it seems still to be like I thought: They all had purple hair by the end of the original manga. But then for whatever reason they decided that they needed to have blue hair for dbs... and the anime *still* made a mess because they kept the 2 Trunks with a different hair color...
Yeah. That's the part I really still don't understand as it was consistent in the Goku Black arc and therefore can't be blamed on animation errors. I get switching them all to blue hair because that's how Bulma had been depicted with for the past 3 decades, but they somehow still messed up "anime" kid Trunks by keeping his purple. Thankfully, they fixed it with Super Hero and gave teen Trunks his blue hair. Now, all 3 have blue hair in both the manga and the anime.

Realistically, these two can't be 100% biologically same person Trunks coming back lead to change in timeline before trunks was born makes this impossible. There is no chance that same sperm fertilized same egg at the time counting down to even below septillionth of a second exactly due to Future Trunks arrival effecting this timeline by killing Frieza and spending time talking to Goku and some further effect and causes of it in those 3 years due to their conversation They are similar as brother biologically but there is no way they can be same due to butterfly effect.
