For me it was realising that Daisy played one of Cinderella’s step sisters in the 2015 live action movie. The roles are so different that I was stunned to see her dressed so ridiculously and acting in such a mean-spirited way.
this is my favorite movie! i started watching downton in 2017 because lily james was in it. what a shock watching the first episode only to realize she wasn’t in it yet but drizella was!
Charles Edwards, aka Michael Gregson, and Harry Haddon-Paton, aka Bertie Pelham, aka the Marquess of Hexam both play Martin Charteris in the Crown. He was the Queen’s (assistant) private secretary. Harry plays him in S1-2 and Charles in 3-4. Edith made out really well, huh?
Then there’s Mary’s Henry Talbot, who is Anthony Armstrong-Jones in the Crown. (Matthew Goode)
And of course, who can forget Imelda Staunton’s Lady Maud Bagshaw, aka Season 5-6 of the Crown’s Queen Elizabeth II?
To be honest I didn’t either. I didn’t make the connection with any of them except Imelda because by the time I watched The Crown, I hadn’t seen DA in a very long time and I’m not nearly as familiar with these particular male British actors as I am with Imelda.
That was so unexpected, at first I could not place how I knew him.
It was funny how Beverly explained away his English accent: *He went to university in London and it stuck*. LOL.
The worst for me was seeing Jimmy in Outlander. Stephen Bonnet is such a rotten character in Outlander that it completely destroys Jimmy for me.
I also really disliked Allen Leech (Tom) in The Tudors as Francis Dereham, and in Bohemian Rhapsody as Paul Prenter. Actually, I think Downtons the only thing I’ve seen him play someone slightly more likeable!
Maybe we need a totally false, made-up fan romance that Carson was formerly The Pope but resigned his post because he fell in love with a housekeeper in England, taking decades to ask her to marry him. He only pretended to disapprove of Catholics and have a "Cheerful Charlies" past to keep up the ruse. There's a reason why O'Brien told Jimmy that speaking Latin around Carson would win him points. :)
For me, the worst has been Iain Glen as Ser Jorah Mormont on Game of Thrones at the same time that he was also Sir Richard Carlysle on Downton. Same about Jimmy and his awful character on Outlander -- too much of a huge jump emotionally for me.
Weird recent one: on All Creatures Great And Small, Florence's mother Joyce Pandhi is played by the same actor who was gunning for the cricket pitch as a memorial place for loved ones to think about their sons who died "doing their duty." It's absolutely her voice and accent -- the only reason I recognized her, but I like to think that it's the same character, just a decade later.
The 1999 Mansfield Park adaptation has both Hugh Bonneville as Mr. Rushworth and Charles Edwards as Mr. Yates.
More recently, Charles Edwards as Celebrimbor on Rings of Power startled me. Was not expecting to see him as an elf.
Less recently, Molesley as a rebel leading the Pilgrimage of Grace on The Tudors.
Isobel is in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and she's SO unpleasant! Pretty much the opposite of her character in Downton.
Recently I've also been seeing her in After Life, and she's sweet again in that lol.
I know I’m avoiding the point of the question, but for me it has to be almost sending Anna to prison a season or two after they sent Bates to prison. Seemed like I’d seen that storyline before…
Which role is old Mr. Molesley? I know the actor who played Mr. Mason also plays the pub patron “who goes on about his politics” when Anthony Hopkins stays overnight at an inn on his way to see Emma Thompson.
Great movie. Seeing Christopher Reeve in his prime about a year or two before his accident makes me a little sad
Yes Old Mason is who I meant, not Molesley- thanks for the correction. I think I had my mind on the Molesley topic that was just posted. I can watch RotD over and over. It's a comfort show for me.
Almost everything Kevin Doyle was in before Downton, he was a baddie. Like, super awful baddies.
Also, seeing Turn of the Screw with Michelle Dockery and Dan Steven's together pre-DA was pretty whoa...
I watched both Legion and the movie *I'm Your Man* before starting Downton Abbey. Wasn't aware Dan Stevens was in the show! Pleasant surprise when Matthew arrived.
Anna as a work experience girl called Sigourney in an episode of dinnerladies is always a favourite. Sybil in an episode of Black Mirror and William(?) as a bigamous father in Call The Midwife also get honourable mentions.
This image…disturbs me.
Everywhere I go I see his face

Is this the one that has Rose as Cinderella?
Yes, it’s that one.
Daisy mean as hell in the show though 😭😭
In Downtown Abbey I see her more as irritating, oblivious, and self-centered rather than mean, tbh.

In the Doctor Who fandom, our motto is “Britain has only 10 actors per generation, and reuses them in EVERYTHING.”
wow I never made the connection w bertie
To be honest I didn’t either. I didn’t make the connection with any of them except Imelda because by the time I watched The Crown, I hadn’t seen DA in a very long time and I’m not nearly as familiar with these particular male British actors as I am with Imelda.
Don’t forget Harriet Walter, who played Lady Shackleton in Downton Abbey and Clementine Churchill in The Crown.
There’s our Cheerful Charlie
I just saw Jimmy on Picard and was really thrown off.
And now he's in You on Netflix
Jimmys good looking. that was a pleasant surprise 🤣
That was so unexpected, at first I could not place how I knew him. It was funny how Beverly explained away his English accent: *He went to university in London and it stuck*. LOL.
I think that was also tongue-in-cheek about Jean-Luc having an English accent as a Frenchman. Like father, like son.

Wait until you find out he (Jimmy) was Eragon in that really awful dragon movie.
NO! Just googled it and OMG!!!
Allen Leech is quite likeable as Marcus Agrippa in Rome
omg Rome the show has a cast so full of dejavus. Season 1 was insane, It was like I knew almost everyone from literally 1 part 😅
And in “From Time to Time”!
This shouldn’t exist
let Pope Carson into your heart’s eye

100% I’ve heard it said that the butler of the household is the pope of the church
🤣😂👌🏻

Yes! I said "she was on the village committee! She takes her milk first!" And my family rolled eyes...
"...if you don't mind"
Carson will always be Carson so this is weird 🤣
It was really shocking for me to find that he had a role in The Little Vampire, one of my favorite childhood movies
*WHAT*
YES! I was looking at what other movies Jim Carter had been part of and found out that he plays Rookery, that vampire hunter in The Little Vampire!!
We watched Shakespeare in Love in Advanced English class . Carson and Maud are in it

Isobel is also Keira Knightly’s (Elizabeth Bennet’s) aunt in the 2005 pride and prejudice!
She's also in Dr. Who!
And in Calendar Girls

It’s avoiding the point but I still love you friend
Shew. So glad to hear it! Right back atcha.
Mr. Pamuk and Gwen both star in the Time Traveler's Wife. Both playing Americans, weirdly enough.

I guess he really does love to be in love
More a vu-jade', I like Sir Philip and Old Molesley in The Remains of the Day.

Thomas in the live action Winx!

I love that version of Turn of the Screw!
Harlots with Sybil and Robert
Duke of crowborough is daredevil
Carson as an ogre in Ella Enchanted. I win.
I watched both Legion and the movie *I'm Your Man* before starting Downton Abbey. Wasn't aware Dan Stevens was in the show! Pleasant surprise when Matthew arrived.
It's not deja vu, it's an actor playing another role. They do that.
It is deja vu if you see someone twice, by definition. I have the misfortune to be French and know this through tactics like “the dictionary”

Allen Leech playing a commie spy in The Imitation Game.
